Bring Safari into 2006
macspecialist.org — Microsoft and the Mozilla team have come to an agreement for a standardized RSS feed icon. That's great, but what about us Safari users? Here is an installer to replace the default Safari icon with the new standard icon.

- Ninjamonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe it is just me but I like Safari's icon better.
- skanche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think the default Safari icon was probably born out of a lack of better ideas. An RSS button that says "RSS" on it is kinda weak. What if all icons were this way? How about folder icons that say "Folder" on them. The new icon, despite its shortcomings, is a pretty good alternative,
- crazymacuser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I just installed this - worked great! Big fan of the new icon, finally nice to seem some standardization... hopefully this comes standard with the new Safari.
- Ninjamonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I still think Safari's RSS icon is probably easier on new users. If I wasn't a geek I'd have no idea what the hell that new icon was.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are you crazy? I prefer Apple's RSS icon than something that looks like a satellite feed icon. No thanks.
- skanche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But if you were a new user would you know what RSS is?
- brabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's definitely nice to have the option
- sp4rky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like both but I lean towards the Safari RSS, but it is a great thing to hear about some standardization. Anyways being a mac and pc users I uses firefox and safari either one works for me, I will probably uses the new rss icon.
- sp4rky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw here is the permalink to the story incase the story no longer exists on the homepage of macspecialist.org
http://www.macspecialist.org/content/lets_hold_hands/ - duggthedigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It is nice to see some of these little apps/installers out there - This is the type of thing that makes people enjoy being a mac user.
- jkill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who needs standardization when the button says RSS. It's like replacing the word "stop" on a stop sign with the letter X! Well, it works in firefox I guess.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah I guess it nice to have it.
RSS 4EvR!!! /runs off like a little girl - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For people who can't read?
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like Safari's RSS icon much better and feel that it should be the standard, not something created by M$ or Firefox.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh, and they stole that icon from Apple anyway - since it looks just like Apple's Airport icon
- AndFrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The new icon is fairly similar to many other icons on the mac. It looks a lot like the AirPort status icon in the menu bar and the radio icon in iTunes. The whole "beacon" symbol makes sense for those kinds of thing, but RSS is different.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is a nice idea but personally I like the standard safari easier. Icons are supposed to convey their meaning more efficiently, but I think in this case 'RSS' conveys the meaning, well, pretty darn effectively :)
- GeneHACKman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+017 comments into this and no one has posted "Safari Sux" yet? Hurry, you could be the first!
- lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the idea of a standard icon, but this particular icon seems like it is saying "wireless" to me. I'd rather see something different.
- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like Safari's "RSS" much better! Why would I want a knock off of Apple's Airport icon as my RSS icon?
MS is just soooo lame, they can't do anything original. - KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and Safari KICKS ASS!!!!! So glad I.E. is dead on the Mac!!! Safari forever. :)
- dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0pointless!
- rafal_m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Safari's icon better.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with most of the comments. Why have that stupid orange thing, when you can have a button that reads 'RSS'. Next year, i see RSS becoming much more popular, but by changing the button to something totally unrelated to RSS Feeds, it's gonna confuse people.
Safari's RSS button is much better, simpler, and identifiable (if thats even a word)
And on the basis on Safari sucking. I think its an awsome browser, and Firefox is nice, but nothing special in my opinion. - colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy cow... it's an icon!!!
let's standardize the "back" and "refresh" buttons as well...
it has always annoyed me that people use different ones... - bradyjfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Safari is focusing it's resources where it should be, standards coding. Let's hear it for prioritizing!
If anything should be next for Safari, it's cleaning is Javascript issues out, not icon standardization. Focusing on this is sidetracking important issues that concern our industry. - mrsskanche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Regardless of whether or not the icon is wicked awesome, it's great that a standard icon now exists for something that so few people are currently aware of.
- bonchbonch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But if you were a new user would you know what RSS is?"
Would you know what the little radio waves icon was? Until recently I never knew what it was and ignored it. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 'official' icon is rather poor--as many have pointed out. But, if it's becoming the 'standard' then 'recognizability' trumps 'appropriate iconography'
We still use the floppy disk icon to save files to our hard drive... - firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg. What a total waste of time. The RSS button at least tells you what it is, this 'standard' one, what exactly is it meant to look like? How is anyone going to know what it's for unless they're told?
- firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@joeyjojo
By 'we' I assume you mean users of Microsoft products. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple users want to be different, so why not make your own RSS icon?
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Safari 4 life
- durandal2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the idea behind using a common icon is to represent all kinds of web feeds, like Atom, and not just RSS. So, a user can see this icon and think "I can subscribe to this", without having to know about the implementation details.
Although I do like Apple's "RSS" button, having separate buttons for "RSS" and "ATOM" and "insert acronym here" would be confusing for people who aren't familiar with this kind of stuff. - 4vector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only 4% of people use RSS because it is almost a useless function
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple's gives more info. in its symbol though. Who really cares anyways? What next, Safari needs to switch it's icon to the internet explorer "E" for the noobs to macs?
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"only 4% of people use RSS because it is almost a useless function"
Well... it's ok, just nothing revolutionary... It's just that bit faster than crunching web sites for information. Also it only works for news, no other content. - Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer Apple's, I don't care enough to install the new graphic.
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"We still use the floppy disk icon to save files to our hard drive..."
I don't.... - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As a Safari user, there are a lot bigger issues with Safari then not using the "standard" rss icon.
- stardustwd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe RSS is the future and will eventually replace e-mail, instead people will post on their blag's and upload there pictures on Flickr.
All of those people that are slagging of MS, firefox originally created that icon. MS were the ones who wanted to standardize it. I know you all hate Microsoft, but take a minute before slagging them off for every little thing.
The icon is universal, noobs wouldn't know what the safari button was anymore than they would know what the new icon is. - dr_benway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just what the hell does an ugly orange [transmitter] icon have anything to do with "bringing Safari into 2006?"
- firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I believe RSS is the future and will eventually replace e-mail"
I believe that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. - goldenratiophi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is this new button "standard?" The only browser that uses it so far is Firefox as far as I know. You may think that the blue RSS button looks stupid, but at least it's informative. Until the orange button becomes a well-know (ie. non Firefox users recognize it) standard, the blue RSS button should stay default.
Plus, everything else in Safari is blue; why complicate it with orange? ;) - goldenratiophi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoops, I didn't notice that Microsoft agreed on the orange button. I guess that makes it standard.
- Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An icon that says "RSS" at least gives a newbie a clue as to what it is, and provides enough info to allow them to look it up if they don't. A satellite dish conveys the thought of radio communications, which is anything but a web site headline service. Leave it to MS to be as counter-intuitive as possible.
- sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I prefer the Safari/Opera RSS icon. Let me know if you find a way to change Firefox's icon to that "standard".
- AtomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Well... it's ok, just nothing revolutionary... It's just that bit faster than crunching web sites for information. Also it only works for news, no other content"
NO OTHER CONTENT, what about torrent sites and pod casts just to name a couple. I agree with almost everyone else here when I say Safari rocks and there RSS icon is better. - Kiltak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That'S all pointless...
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to say i prefer the blue RSS logo better - it's more obvious.
