- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -45/+249I'm no where near an Apple fan, but that's damn clever.
- codered1322, on 01/19/2008, -7/+167I am pretty surprised that the NYT would allow a WSJ quote in an advertisement.
- geoken, on 01/19/2008, -57/+194Hasn't this gotten tired yet?
- D3koy, on 01/19/2008, -37/+171Is no one else getting sick of this stuff? We all know Microsoft could come out with their own set of commercials, and they'd have just as many half-truths and incorrect facts...can we move on?
- veoeluz2268, on 01/19/2008, -33/+155no kidding.. i'm not really an apple supporter, but I'm still waiting for an Apple ad that actually SAYS something about THEIR product, rather than making a clever joke about the competition..
- Konstantino, on 01/19/2008, -3/+120Here's the actual video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7DPWdgoyLI - RadiantBeing, on 01/19/2008, -15/+125Is that what the NYTimes looks like with adblock off? All of that is ad space? Holy *****.
- waspbr, on 01/19/2008, -7/+81well, so is windows xp
- twflint, on 01/19/2008, -23/+89Hmmm...I guess i just don't get whats so Brilliant about that?..
- claya, on 01/19/2008, -9/+72Your definition of brilliant must be different than mine.
- HenvY, on 01/19/2008, -7/+45I presume the original is animated given that pause sign bottom right?
- allaboutdatiki, on 01/19/2008, -12/+44the old grey lady ain't what she used to be ...
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -20/+49You mean they should say something like... "Leopard is better and faster than Vista"?
- Immune, on 01/19/2008, -2/+30"Here's the actual video.

- Konstantino - t3hg00se, on 01/19/2008, -14/+35I fail to see how this is brilliant.
- kanglayen, on 01/19/2008, -6/+26how is this brilliant??
- Tufriast, on 01/19/2008, -8/+28Here is the youtube movie of it!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=L7DPWdgoyLI - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -5/+23I wouldn't call it brilliant. These Mac vs PC ads always came off as fanboyish and thus immature to me.
- blowjustinup, on 01/19/2008, -10/+28I think he's saying.. Not making any remarks about a competitors product while advertising their own. All their ads have to say something about Microsoft. Something like "ZOMG LOLZ WE R BETTR DEN MIKEROWSAWFTZ", rather than actually advertising their product. Sure they slip in things like "LOL I CAN DO THAT WITH ILIFE N IMOVIE", but they still feel the need to trash everyone else.
"Leopard is better and faster than Vista".. Why? What makes it faster? What makes it better? It doesn't say anything about their product, other than that they want you to spend your money on an Apple.
I'm a mac fan by the way. - mrbutter, on 01/19/2008, -11/+28exactly.
These OSX ads are so ridiculous. - crobathias, on 01/19/2008, -6/+22I fail to see the connection to the article...or anything for that matter
- LincolnA, on 01/19/2008, -1/+15I am pretty surprised anyone cares what the WSJ has to say about operating systems.
- bowe, on 01/19/2008, -4/+18Depends on what you mean by "faster." Plus vista is a much bigger jump for Microsoft than from tiger to leopard so they deserve some points for that.
- elpohl, on 01/19/2008, -12/+26Done and done.
- FeargusMcDuff, on 01/19/2008, -3/+16But of a sleazy advert in my opinion. Why not praise your own strengths than point out your opponents weaknesses. A reason someone might choose not to be an Apple 'fan', is so they arn't stuck with the stigma of looking down on people that don't have Macs.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+14wonder how much they've made as the actors... i'm guessing over 5million each. i know for a fact that a small successful advertising in a small country would get something like 50.000 for a 10 second ad if it's the second or third in a series.... now this is like a tv-show, it's got millions of ads... at the very least a million.
for some reason the pc comes out as the cool one in every one of these... the smug apple users suck, this one included - chrisbarr, on 01/19/2008, -0/+12because it's not a threat to them in the least. I love linux too, but the market share is waaay to low for Apple to worry about.
- Smudded, on 01/19/2008, -12/+24This concept of ads is very old. Certainly not "brilliant". Other companies have been doing it for quite some time, just like Apple's "innovations"! ZING!
- DeathGod321, on 01/19/2008, -3/+15I think I just found the perfect advertisement for Microsoft:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Windows_game ... - andrewry, on 01/19/2008, -0/+11Nah, it was a complete video, so part of his actions was in the top half, the rest in the bottom half.
- jembree, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12there was another one on CNet's site: http://youtube.com/watch?v=rvpGACmQaoI&feature=rel ...
- Tanktunker, on 01/19/2008, -2/+12Specifically, 2 days ago.
Real old. - ligyron, on 01/19/2008, -0/+10Microsoft is such a big threat that they put 100% of their advertising budget towards bashing their competitor, rather than showcasing their product
- MadOtaku, on 01/19/2008, -1/+11NOT
- HenvY, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10Thanks for all the witty responses you geniuses, but i'm questioning the quality of the submission if this amazing ad we're supposed to be looking at is a still image version of an animation.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10it was a custom one-day sponsorship, those ad units aren't usually there
- Whence, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9He also said "Hi" to his wife this morning.
- MacHarborGuy, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10you really need to see the video to get it. When I loaded the image of it I was like "Okay, so whats the big deal". I looked in the comments to see if anyone else was as confused as I was, and found multiple links to the video of the same ad on YouTube. Very good use of the multiple flash banners. I have seen this used on many video game websites, but it always seemed, to me, like it was just overhype for games taking up a ton of space on a web page. While the Apple ad does the same thing, takes up a ton of space on the page, they do make fun use of the fact that there is 2 banners.
- bitspace, on 01/19/2008, -0/+7A young blonde lady?
- orp2000, on 01/19/2008, -0/+7Forgive them Henry, they're insecure dorks who have to put others down to make themselves feel smart.
- mgbdeftones, on 01/19/2008, -7/+14bril·liant
–adjective
1. distinguished; illustrious
2. having or showing great intelligence, talent, quality, etc
3. splendid or magnificent: a brilliant social event.
Adding a 'NOT' to the end of a phrase, truly bril·liant - cfulp, on 01/20/2008, -0/+7Lighten up man. If Bill Gates made adds that poked fun at apple i'd giggle at them too.
- TheWorm, on 01/19/2008, -4/+10If someone says something good about Apple they will beat that quote into the ground with a stick.
