- TobiasParker, on 07/16/2009, -13/+42Why does every tech bug have to be a "---Killer"? I don't really care for apples products, but ***** like this happens with every product released, every year. This ***** just inevitably turns into "PC fanboy makes BSOD/RROD defense comparison" and "Apple fanboy pretends the problem does not even exist". I swear, i would rather try to convince the pope to get an abortion than convince a PC/MAC fanboy to switch sides.
- KennMac, on 07/16/2009, -2/+25Another "killer" problem that 99% of users cannot replicate even if they tried.
- mysticalone, on 07/16/2009, -1/+24I think, because I read the article, that the submission title means that when bluetooth is enabled it "kills", as in it ***** yo ***** up holmes, your wifi connection.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+13I think they mean "battery killer"
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+13My 3Gs works fine. Maybe I should write an article.
- danwallace, on 07/16/2009, -5/+16Am I the only one with a 3Gs that just works?
- roebeet, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10And I hate the whole PC / Mac terminology. The last time I checked, a Mac IS a PC. Should be Windows / MacOS, not PC / Mac.
- avasol, on 07/16/2009, -4/+13Because he could've read the manual. Most non-quad Wi-Fi routers use the 2,4ghz frequency, which incidentally (and by very poor design) is the exact same as Bluetooth. Get a quad-band router, it's not the iphone it's the router interpolating the services and dropping one for priority of the other.
ooooh look at me I'm so technical! maybe I should start a blog! - mizike, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8At least the headline didn't have "Breaking!" as well...
- Coling2k2, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8One that redesigns your chipset?
- zynaps, on 07/16/2009, -1/+9Why would you keep your BT constantly on? Turn it off unless you need to pair with another device.
- xsecretfiles, on 07/16/2009, -2/+9I don't have any problems on my 3Gs, and I have bluetooth on 24/7
- mizike, on 07/16/2009, -6/+12So you're the one that bought a Pre! How do you like it?
- danwallace, on 07/16/2009, -2/+7Dude, the iPhone is a good product. So is the Pre. Nobody is drinking any Kool-Aid because they prefer one over the other.
- swicken, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5bluetooth is a battery killer on every phone though. My G1s battery life goes down the drain with bluetooth on.
- miguelandres, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Too bad the iPhone doesn't have 802.11a or n, so it doesn't have 5.0 GHz
- TobiasParker, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4I would say the same thing in a windows article.
- holesome, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4iPhone apps are pretty cool, a lot of my friends love their iPhones (I'm not a smart phone user, but I'm a huge google fan so if I had one it might be the T-Mobile/Google alternative) but while Apple and Palm have been getting lots of press coverage lately, blackberry is busy making deals in China.
Can you say market share? The reports are that the folks at RinM already have devices in-country being tested w/ Chinese networks. Now I know you're going to say that blackberries and iPhones are in different niches, attracting different folks, but if you sell a blackberry to even 1% of the Chinese population that's sales well over 10 million units. - cuervoman914, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4ive found out that if i shut off the phone, all my headaches go away.
- sLydE, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4Man, if you could convince the Pope to get an abortion, you would make headlines everywhere. We could start calling him "Junior", otherwise.
- dn11, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4the Palm Pre wouldn't exist without the iPhone. and many of the engineers that developed the Pre came over from Apple after developing the iPhone. Have a nice day, sucker.
- adorkable81, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3This is why I jailbreak my phone, use SBSettings (installed via Cydia) to toggle my BT when i need to use it. Battery life actually last longer than 2.x firmware.
Also toggle off the following when not in use to save battery (one swipe on the top to show the SBSettings panel, one touch to turn on/off):
- WiFi
- SSH
- Lower Brightness - xsecretfiles, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5I use it everyday while driving, at work, at the gym....and I don't want to have to turn it on/off every time, so that way it will just pair every time I need it.
- swicken, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I'd imagine so, wifi and bluetooth are both fairly heavy on the processing side. I'm sure it takes a least a little system resource to keep them both going.
I don't run either on my G1 unless I have it plugged into power, and I never run bluetooth (I don't really like the bluetooth headsets). - SteveMax, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Good for you, but that has nothing to do with the point. The point is that whatever hit that Bluetooth can make to the battery life of a phone has to be weighted against the benefits of having it on. For you it may not be worth it (since from the way you put it, BT on your phone "drain your battery at an insanely fast rate"), but for some people who use it more frequently it might be. My 24/16 hour values were from an old Palm Zire: that was a pretty big hit, but it was worth it if you kept the PDA always on and recharged it as it synced to the computer at night, not that your phone had those values.
- AndrewMoyer, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5Nope, I'm with you also.
- swicken, on 07/16/2009, -2/+4While I'm not an iPhone owner, nor would I want one, I don't think its a bad product.
The new release may have some bugs, but they're hard to recreate and I'm sure will be sorted out quickly enough.
Your comment is pretty useless really. - swicken, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3Maybe you should, I smell adense dollars! Even if you weren't right you sounded right enough that people would believe you!
- KennMac, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Ahh, refreshing. Sensibility and logic on digg. It's like the old days.
- SteveMax, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3@nicc
So? I'm pretty sure xsecretfiles is aware of that, and believes it to be a fair tradeoff. More people would think like that if the smartphones had bigger batteries, of course; but going from a 24-hours battery to one that lasts ~16 hours doesn't change much, you will have to charge it overnight anyway. - Zippo, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2At least our Kool-Aid is better-tasting than your crappy store-brand drink mix.
- pattyhax, on 07/16/2009, -0/+298% PC Usage in business = job security for PC guys
I'm a fan of job security - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3I've noticed that if I turn off wifi and bluetooth my phone operates faster. Not significantly, but faster.
- MWeather, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2If I had known iPhones came with an FPGA, I'd have bought one a long time ago!
- oilcan, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I think this 'Killer' is not the big explosive fanboy statement you're making it out to be. I think it's just saying, you know, hey, if you're having problems getting wifi on your iphone, try turning off bluetooth, because when bluetooth is on, it, you know, kills your wifi signal. not OMG IPHONE KILLER WIFITOOTH ROFLCOPTER APPLESUX etc.
- AndrewMoyer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Now that the new iPhone OS supports A2DP (finally), I love my stereo bluetooth headphones. Blue Ant makes a set that cost me $30... decent quality sound, comfortable once you figure out the best way to wear them, and they play for like a day straight on a quick charge. YMMV.
When I'm not listening to music though, I keep Bluetooth off on my phone, and for the most part I keep WiFi off -- both just for battery consumption purposes. I haven't noticed any slowdown related to either being on ever. - nicc, on 07/16/2009, -2/+3no problems with mine.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+3I agree.
- wxman, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1I discovered this playing Baseball Slugger 3D a while ago.....a weak signal with disconnect problems disappeared after turning off bluetooth.
- antoniuk, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2No, but that does not mean that it's not a serious flaw just becasue only 0.01% of the users have it 2% of the time. Every phone must work flawlessly or the whole thing is a failure. Didn't you know this?
- geoken, on 07/16/2009, -5/+6When you turn 16 and start realizing there is life outside of WOW and your moms basement you'll see that people actually purchase things on technical merits and not because they want to a) fit in to some arbitrary definition of coolness or b) be rebellious by actively avoiding things which are deemed 'popular'.
- MWeather, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1If that were the case, our economy would have gone in the crapper a long time ago. If people didn't want to keep up with the Joneses, we'd be (even more) doomed.
- counterplex, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Have faith TobiasParker. The sane amongst us embrace multiple vendors/brands/operating systems. We live among you, hiding in plain sight, but watching over you.
- xGORDOx, on 07/16/2009, -3/+4Sweet compass though!
/s - Zaeboes, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1I laugh at compasses in cars. Nearly every road in the USA runs North to South, or East to West. If you can't tell what direction you're going, you should probably not change your route to work. Ever.
- Zaeboes, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0Bluetooth isn't a battery killer, the iphone's usage is the problem. It constantly scans for new devices while it's on. My phone has bluetooth always on and it only scans when I tell it to. My phone lasts for days like this.
- nicc, on 07/16/2009, -3/+3and drain your battery at an insanely fast rate...
- KennMac, on 07/16/2009, -2/+2Do you laugh at compasses in cars? Why laugh at it in a phone? They both serve the same purpose... which is to compliment applications that provide navigation.
Of course, you can just ignore all that and focus on the compass app, and comment on blogs, and say 'OMGZ why do I need a compass in the mall?!' - Zaeboes, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0My phone (Sony Ericsson w580i) has bluetooth turned on all the time. I never shut it off, and my battery still lasts 3+ days with mild to moderate usage. Complain to HTC that they didn't provide a sufficient battery for your device.
