- tacksharp, on 10/11/2007, -10/+184Everyone knows Jobs is a genius and an *****.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -7/+123"He also has issues with the iPhone being free of AT&T’s logo"
I believe that's just jealousy. Besides, my computer doesn't have a Roadrunner logo on it and phones shouldn't have AT&T/TMobile/Verizon logos on them. - daGUY, on 10/11/2007, -10/+107This is laughable. Apple is screwing over AT&T? They just gave them 500,000 NEW customers in a matter of days. At $60/month (minimum!) with a 2-year contract, that gives AT&T an additional $720 MILLION - at least!
What he means is "we don't have any device that can get people nearly as excited, so we're just going to pretend AT&T is getting screwed over to make ourselves feel better." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+98I wish someone would screw me over and bring billions to my company.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -9/+98Why does AT&T deserve any credit? They didn't develop the phone hardware or software.
- fanboydcs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+93oh yeah because 1 million 2 year activation / contracts in 8 days is screwing AT&T so badly..
- JoeLeo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+82It’s really hard for me to be sympathetic when it comes to the oligopoly that the four US wireless carriers hold over their customers and the handset makers.
How many features are crippled on US handsets by the wireless carriers?
Why does the US lag behind most of the rest of the world when it comes to SMS? Why can’t the CTIA implement a long code solution for SMS instead of making short codes so expensive and difficult to implement on each carrier’s network?
No one in the US complains about the land line’s quality or security - all points that Ma’ Bell said would be an issue if they allowed third party products to attach to their network. Today, we hear the same arguments from the US wireless carriers regarding Skype's petition to open up the wireless carrier's networks. - Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -13/+64“It’s a dangerous strategy,” says Balsillie.
Yeah, it's dangerous for other phone makers. Some customers now may be convinced they could buy another brand phone without having to do activation in the store, and without the phone's carrier covering the whole phone with their LOGO. Very dangerous indeed. - Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -10/+57Who the hell cares? AT&T does nothing but get money from this phone-- RIM CEO's just pissed off cause noone like their fugly phones.
- epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41I think it is about time that at&t got screwed over, they have been screwing their customers over big-time. I think people should appreciate steve jobs because of how he has broken the tight control that the big phone companies have always had and turned it into innovation with things such as visual voice mail and activation from the home.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -8/+44Bury this crap. Who cares about RIM CEO's sour grapes?
- Tserk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+38As a very happy Blackberry owner, I've gotta say 'stfu' to this guy. Shut up and get back to work.
- kevinskok, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34what a whiny little bitch
- voidptr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30“It’s a tremendous amount of control. And the more control of the platform that goes out of the carrier, the more they shift into a commodity pipe.”
The quicker cell phone companies transition into a commodity pipe, the better. - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31AT&T getting screwed on something? Wait, I think I feel a tear coming on. I'm REALLY trying to feel bad about this.
Nope. I don't think I feel anything. - streak, on 10/11/2007, -10/+35Bzzt! AT&T has received a ton of press over the iPhone. Not all of it has been good, but it has been copious. This smacks of sour grapes by the "Dingleberry" producer. And Apple/Jobs should be applauded for making the purchase and activation process so painless for the vast majority of purchasers. Look out, Dingleberry, here comes Apple!
- wevegotthejazz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18personally I'm quite happy the iPhone isn't branded top to bottom w/ AT&T's logo
not that they should be upset about it anyway, because the AT&T logo is ALWAYS at the top left hand corner of the screen, while the Apple logo only appears on the screen during boot - jerrylin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Like it or not: That's business.
Steve Jobs is a known ***** and egomaniac, but he makes money, and he's able to make Apple work. - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I don't really see why anybody would care about this without trying to stir the pot. Nobody bought the iPhone or even cared about it because of AT & T - we all did because it was an Apple product. It could have been with any carrier and seen the same success.
- DaveClarkOne, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17RIM CEO should be worried...he's about to feel Jobs' wrath, meted out by a better product. I've used both; the iPhone is superior (it ain't close). Who on this board is qualified to say Jobs is a nice guy or not? Why do you care? You need a friend?
- Hipple, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28I guess you belong to that vocal minority that thinks that the iPhone represents some huge competition to the Blackberry, but I imagine that's because you probably don't have a job that would require a Blackberry. Let me break it down for you:
- The iPhone is GREAT for teenagers with too much money and adults who want a really trendy personal phone
- Blackberries are great for white collar workers and businesspeople who need their phones to actually do business - inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Wow, this guy is a whiner. This reminds me of the guy at Real who whined about the iPods.
Here's a reality check, dude. You had every opportunity to step up to the plate and beat Apple, to make the iPhone yourselves, but you didn't have the motivation or vision, just like Real lacked the vision to make the iPod/iTunes combo. Stop complaining and start working on an "iPhone killer." - epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Exactly, all apple did was to demand that at&t didn't interfere and everyone is saying that apple "bullied' or "forced" them to cooperate. Like I have always said, if the iPhone flops for any reason, you can bet that it will be because of at&t.
- cboj, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15You would think a Macintosh fan would know how to abbreviate Mac. MAC that is an abbreviation for Media Access Control address (MAC address) on a network card, Mac is for Macintosh.
- Brian48216, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14I'm all for screwing over ATT.
- undersky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Actually I am returning my iPhone today to go back to my BlackBerry 8800. iPhone couldn't do things that were critical for me, unlike BB, it can't:
1. Open certain email. Some emails in certain encoding will show up as no-content. Large attachment will also make the whole email (even the text part) forever to load. (I won't load the text first.)
2. Copy-paste. I cannot save a part of a webpage or email into my Notes.
3. No syncing of Notes with my Computer. Essentially no exchange of any information other than multimedia between iPhone and my computer.
4. No saving of email permanently. I can't save an important email for future viewing. It only keep the newest n emails. Older ones will be deleted. (I am speaking of gmail.)
5. It does not check for new mail every n minutes when the phone is idle. (At least that's what happened to me!)
6. Call-log won't differentiate between outgoing call and incoming calls. Only differentiate between missed call and non-missed calls.
7. I can't individually delete call log entry.
3, 4 and 5 are most important: If I can't copy paste or save the email, essentially there is no way for me to reference to important information without being online. For example, if I got an email from United airlines about my flight and rental information 3 month in advance. I want to be able to open that email quickly 3 month later during my travel to reference to it. What can I do? I can't save that email, there is no guarantee three months later that email will still be there. I can't copy and paste the content. Even if the email is there, I can't even search for it in my inbox...am I supposed to scroll three months worth of email back? Only thing I can do is log onto gmail.com, but if I am flying, oversea, or out of range, then I am screwed.
Also, alarm clock alarm is very weak, repeat alarms are very ridiculous (only can choose one day of a week to repeat, or to create additional alarm, no "daily" repeat.)
Phone ring tone, speaker phone volume and headset volume are all too soft to use. BB on the contrary is extremely loud and has better reception.
BB can do everything iPhone can't, sans iTune playback. So, definitely go back to BB. - virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Really, all AT&T did was sit back and enjoy the ride and got almost a million converts. Seriously, I would be salty too if I got a billion dollars for sitting on my ass! Really, it isn't even instore activation!
- djphatjive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Love how you copied that from the other article.
- 22justin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Jim Balsilie is a complete fool. He already shot himself in the foot trying to buy the Pitsburg Penguins, maybe he should just keep his mouth shut
- spectre_25gt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Blackberry and Apple aren't even competing. The iPhone isn't meant for business use and would be ***** for anyone that wants to use it that way. Blackberry still dominates there. The only thing I see possibly hurting them is some of the Windows Mobile phones.
- dippyskoodlez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Oh yeah apples screwing AT&T.
And people are buying iphones in droves because AT&T has such an amazing reputation. - macbookpromat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Have you ever seen an Apple product with anything else than an Apple logo on it?
- bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Every blackberry goes through a QA process, unlike most phones out there, where only 1 out of 400 or so go through extensive testing. One of my close friends did an internship up there in Canada. These devices work really well. This explains why my blackberry works, despite me dropping it at least 5 times. There's a reason why businessmen, corporate america, the military use blackberries. They are extremely durable and robust. They are built for mission critical systems. None of this, oh crap I dropped it, it's broken business.
It's the best phone I've ever used. - OmniMe, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Baldsilly is an *****. He knows a thing or two about screwing over a company or organization. Ask the NHL's Pens or Preds fans.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Many (most?) of the activation problems were due to customers trying to cancel business contracts over which they had no control. Estimates I've read were 2% of customers had difficulty. That's an incredible success in my book, and largely attributable to Apple's strong will to create a great customer experience. I wouldn't be surprised if the other carriers put their number portability systems into slow mode, or at least didn't beef them up for the onslaught of migrations brought about by the iPhone introduction.
- RickySan65, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9No worries, AT&T will, in turn, screw over their customers.. everyone wins, well, uh.. except Joe Blow the customer offcourse
- pixelsoup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7What are you talking about? The only time a carrier logo should appear is on a bill. AND you should be able to switch carriers if you're not happy with the service, product or price.
- AJay85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6One of the first things I did with my old T616 Sony Ericsson is scratch the AT&T logo off the face with my fingernail.
- Mofassa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Am I the only one here suspicious of this article in general?
There's only two quotes here - neither of which seem wrong by themselves....something about this doesn't seem right.... - dreamstorm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Visual voicemail--one of the iPhone's most highly-touted features--required AT&T to provide software support on their end. So it's not the case that they did no work.
- epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13"He also has issues with the iPhone being free of AT&T’s logo"
Funny because that one of the most annoying things about any phone I have had over the past 5 years. It is clear that this guy is all about the maximizing profits with little regard to consumers while apple is into maximizing profits by (gasp!) making better products.
If anything, at&t is the only real problem that the iPhone could have. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10How? iPhone is just a phone not a smart phone like Apple Claims it is. If the iPhone could do even half the thing that a Blackberry can do then apple stands a chance. Because as the iPhone stands now the only people who would be getting it are the ones who want to make a "Style Statement".
- Nielske, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Or if they started shipping with intel chips you'd see an intel inside logo
- Dominatus, on 10/11/2007, -12/+17Are you kidding? the iPhone is way more restricted than most other phones out there. You can get tons of unlocked phones and *gasp* put them on different networks! Don't act like Apple 'freed" the cell phone market.
The only people who have to suffer are the customers who could now be expected to now have their phones subsidized and thus be required to pay full price. - sjbdallas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Buried as innacurate for 2 reasons: first of all, there is only one actual quote in the whole article: “It’s a tremendous amount of control. And the more control of the platform that goes out of the carrier, the more they shift into a commodity pipe.” He isn't slamming anyone, he's just explaining a strategy. Second, I don't expect that any CEO in his right mind would talk to a lame site like CEOSMACK.com especially when they turn one quote into a statement like "Apple is screwing AT&T". He didn't say anything like that.
Call me a blackberry fanboy but i've carried one since it was a simple 2 line, monochrome, pager. RIM knows where the money is and their stock wouldn't be about to split for the second time in 4 years if they didn't know what they were doing. - shark615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not until they service business and enterprise level applications.
- adinb, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Sour Grapes. That's about it from RIM.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That's a laugh. I'll agree that the interface is better; my pearl pisses me off every time I try to change a setting. Saying the iPhone has better features, though, is ridiculous at best. It can't even do push email.
- ejdmoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Be suspicious of the whole site.
Their cover article:
http://www.ceosmack.com/2007/07/08/5-tips-learned-from-apple-ceo-steve-jobs-for-making-an-unforgetable-pitch/
Was ripped wholesale from here:
http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/content/jul2007/sb2007076_474371.htm - aupton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Sounds like Balsillie and Jobs couldn't come to an agreement on how to implement RIM/Blacbberry support on the iPhone so now Balsillie is throwing a tantrum. The real ***** here is AT&T because currently their "Unlimited" data plan "DOES NOT!" include unlimited e-mail with other devices such as a Blackberry / Treo, or anything that supports Good-Link... That's right kids, if you want to receive your email with your already purchased "UNLIMITED" data plan you must hand over an "ADDITIONAL" $20 per month on top of your already purchased "UNLIMITED" data plan...
Who's the real ***** here? -
