- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+59Incase people aren't understanding what this is... this is a Mac-only BitTorrent client with a simple built-in search engine.
It also kind of defeats the advantage of sites like The Pirate Bay, which frequently have very useful comments on the torrent page letting people know if the software within is broken, or other very helpful information. If you're computer-illiterate, I HIGHLY suggest you use these websites because the information within these comments if often invaluable. Much better than typing something into a program like this and getting just a list of filenames and number of seeders. - ceris, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46BitTorrent was "Done Right" when µTorrent came out.
I prefer downloading torrents, this program just seems to automate things.
I didn't realize BitTorrent was so complicated before. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Its nice of phillryu to download only ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu & legal stuff on his xtorrent.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20We're talking OS X here.
- Giever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Okay, but µTorrent is not for Mac OS X, as far as I'm aware. So more options are nice. On Windows I use µTorrent though.
- kendawg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20...but he makes it easy for the mac users that can't go to a website and click "Download this torrent"
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16What we need is a competitor to Azureus. I mean this looks nice and Transmission is another nice one but Azureus just has about everything beat in terms of features. The problem with Azureus is that it uses Java. I'd like something as good but with faster code. Cocoa would be great.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Yes, Watanabe's apps rock. And if he ever actually responded to potential customers' emails (mine, for instance) with questions about his products, I would actually buy them. :(
- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12http://www.xtorrentp2p.com/
- wedges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10does anyone know if this application will feature selective downloading? (i.e. i only want half the files)
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I wouldn't care except that the torrent clients for OSX mostly suck right now.
Tomato - doesn't have a UB
Transmission - Banned from most private trackers cuz devs won't fix it
Bits on Wheels - Old
Azureus - Currently use
Now, that being say I'm sure this will b great and all, but I WON'T be paying 10 dollars just to use a torrent client... - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17"Yes, Watanabe's apps rock. Actually, I was wondering which Open Source product he stole code from for this one... - maccam94, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well, if you like uTorrent good for you, but that is a Windows-only app. This thread is about an OSX client, so even if it is like uTorrent and you wouldn't switch, it's irrelevant because it's the first of its kind on OSX.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"it is good for people who only know how to use Kazaa and Limewire."
This is a ***** reason to use this program. Software like Kazaa and Limewire is flawed. Downloading torrents from websites that feature ways to contact other downloaders and ask them questions about a 4 GB file that'll take you a week to get is clearly the superior choice.
If you want to do newbies a favor, give them a BitTorrent client with a low memory footprint and a few torrent site links. - NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So far, it looks like he just took the Aquisition code & removed the Gnutella portion of it from being compiled.
Though, if enough advanced features are added - Azureus & µTorrent-compatible Encryption, Disc Cache, a µTorrent-esque way of viewing torrent status and data, and a few other things, it can be a very nice program. And the developer's certainly got enough ability to code a program with those features. - Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What I found with Watanabe's app Acquisition is that its demands for you to register the product go past 'reminder' and into 'chronic nagging' territory. And for me it was always ironic that David insisted we buy a product that was, at its core, all about theft.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What the ***** is so hard to understand about uTorrent not being an OS X app, and Xtorrent being an OS X app. Jesus.
- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Judging by Watanabe's past, I highly doubt it will be free.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wasn't aware bittorrent was being done wrong..
- paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love Dave's apps, but I'm not sure I can justify spending money for an application that, from the perspective of Acquisition users, searches for torrents. Unless there are some significant new features not detailed on Phill's blog I'll stick with Acquisition and Transmission for my torrent downloading needs.
- AmazingSyco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Finally. I've been waiting for Watanabe to do BitTorrent properly. :)
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Since Watanabe made it, it will be chokeware, I hate the constant reminders of how you haven't payed for it and would I like to pay for it now....what about now?.....now?.
I love his apps, but don't have a credit card to pay his ridiculous prices. - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6(wipes drool)...
Anyone found a link to the product page (if there is one yet)? - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Watanabe designs pretty apps, but he is notorious for using exploiting loopholes in the GPL to charge for programs based on GPL code. Acquisition, for example, is just Gnutella with a nice interface. This is probably just going to be another libtorrent client with a nice interface, which means that it will still be banned from most trackers.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree Kypt, Transmission is great, but banned. I hate using the original client, and Azureus is bloated. Can't wait to see if it's worth it.
- rparle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not to mention being based on GPLed code but not released under the GPL itself. I still payed for it, because I think his contributions merit it, but it pissed me off.
- zerodefect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone got uTorrent to run on Mac using Crossover or Darwine?
- Logan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What are you talking about! I think you're confusing Xtorrent and David Watanabe with that other guy, who "created" Xfactor with code from Poisoned, and BitRocket from Transmission.
David's apps (NewsFire, Acquisition, and Inquisitor) are all original code, and in fact, the base code for Acquisition is actually open source! - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long as it has a smaller footprint than Azureus and isn't banned everywhere like Transmission or BitRocket, I'll be pleased to use XTorrent.
NewsFire is the best RSS aggregator out there, so I'm hopeful. - nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At first I thought this was going to be a problem. Making it like limewire or kazaa and then having a bunch of adware/viruses get spread around. Then I realized it was for mac.
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pardon me but, if this makes torrent d/l'ing more automated...how will you know if the video if thats what ur d/l'ing is not nuked? or vid/voice badly out of sync
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does this mean its going to be taken out of Acquisition? I hope not. I don't see why he just didn't add to the BT implementation that was already there
- Steaminx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap that is slick.
- plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know if this supports auto downloading from torrent RSS feeds? I like democracy but its BT support is a bit shakey and it's a real resource hog. In my opinion Tranmission is the best client out there (tiny, quick and good looking). I just wish it supported RSS...
- onidraky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The whole tracker aspect is the best part of Bittorrent, in my opinion, and this program just seems to get rid of most of the benefits of it, at least on the searching and community aspect of it. With this searching option it's just another p2p program.
- Stri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I've been waiting for a torrent with effective search capabilities for some time. Only one problem, I'm not a Mac user. If anyone knows of such a cilent for Windows client which allows search multiple trackers then let me know please.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2NewsFire and Aquisition are great, but this dude loves charging an arm and a leg for relatively simple software. If NewsFire wasn't $20, everyone and their grandmother would be using it. Heck, I might even dole out $10 for a newsreader on a good day. I know the dude needs to eat and everything, but I find it hard to stomach his prices when free solutions abound left and right.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know, I know. I tell myself that, but I just can't bring myself to drop $20 for a newsreader. It's not just him, either. $30 for NetNewsWire? I just can't justify that large of a purchase for applications that are somewhat limited in their use.
He's a fantastic programmer, and his apps are always beautiful and stable and wonderful to use, but I just can't bring myself to pay $20 a pop for a P2P app, a torrent client and a newsreader. - joelmole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"You never heard of µTorrent (uTorrent)?"
This entire thread is for a mac based BitTorrent client. uTorrent is not.
The search functionality sounds slick, but unfortunately that's a path that leads immediately to lawsuit land by copyright holders, assuming links to illegal content are returned by the searches. The only way prior torrent clients have been able to skirt litigation is because they merely define a file transfer mechanism, such as FTP, HTTP, etc, and don't actually host the lists of illegal content.
The future of Torrent technology is in OS and web browser integration.
Whoops, beaten by pkulak. - MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nope, not chokeware. haven't seen a nag window yet
- LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7BitTorrent isnt hard anyway
- natenate19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Xtorrent is essentially Transmission with a nice GUI. Run the app. Look at the about box. It's based upon libtransmission. Speculatively, then, all of Transmission's implementation faults ("tracker poling bug" being the most serious and infamous) will be present in Xtorrent. That is, unless said bugs have been fixed by the author, which I've found no indication of.
Wake me when there's an OS X client that can do (good) peer exchange and outgoing encryption... that isn't Azureus. - cell-gfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't the whole idea of bittorrent that the more people who download something, the easier it is for the other users to download as well? Besides, bittorrent isn't rocket science... I know plenty of 'non tecs' (sic) that use it all the time!
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nothing new. But it is nice. Well these guys have nice coding guys for their other projects so it is nothing surprising.
They have no information about so it might be good or bad. - dearreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you know it doesn't support advanced features? There's a preference panel labeled "Advanced" in one of the screen shots. Granted, it's unlikely to have all of the bells and whistles available for Azureus, but that program is so damn slow that its extra features aren't worth the bother. My only question is whether or not the built-in search will be enough of a bonus for me to ditch the easy-to-use and FREE Transmission.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The guy has to make a living though... and his software is relatively well priced along side software by companies such as Panic! and other small independents. Plus he rolls out updates quite frequently keeping his software portfolio fresh although i wish he would attend to his customers questions.
- ignorantcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I asked Phill to forward this to David Watanabe, we'll see how this turns out..
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Far as I can tell the only advantage that this program has over
any other torrent client is.
1) It has some type very rudimentary search.
2) It looks like a mac application.
If you want to search for torrents use torrent harvester
http://torrentharvester.awardspace.com/
Its not a torrent client but what it does is search a large
group of torrent sites for the file your looking for.
I like a clean easy to use UI as much as the next person.
but... If its only claim to fame is that its got a cute UI and does not support any
of the feature sets that are available in other Torrent applications whats the point. - ericcivil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i feel that this program will make torrenting too easy and lead to a slump in seeding and creation of torrents. the difficulty in figuring out the torrent system is almost a right of passage to be a part of the system. it's a nice idea and a clean looking app, but it's opening the torrent door for the masses which shouldn't be looked at as such a good thing, atleast so quickly.
