- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+446I thought from reading the description that this was going to be a Garfield cartoon.
Disappointed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+213worst description ever!
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+171i dont get it, it says silence, but there was like literally .3 seconds after he asked for a goodbye, then he asked again.
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -72/+214I'm not amused by those Apple commercials either. They state false facts, in a cocky, incorrect way, that doesn't accurately portray the situation.
For example:
1. I do tons of creative stuff on my PC, with free software, maybe not OOTB, but I have a greater selection than the latest bloated iCrap.
2. Windows has more media support. Codecs on macs are a pain, but there's ALWAYS one for Windows, due to it's market share. (Except that MauiXStream Arben K. Crap, which wouldn't be worth it anyway. (Probably has stolen code from Xvid(CherryOS/PearPC))).
3. Restarting commercial? When's the last time your 2000/Xp/Vista has locked up solid? Probably the same amount of times a mac kernel panics. Rare to never.
I could go on...
I'm not against macs, I'm just tired of the false hatrid advertising, it makes Apple seem low. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -24/+1427of7 works for microsoft or something, seriously, he digg everything pro microsoft and anything anti-google, apple, linux, nintendo, sony......
you could replace him with a simple shell script, he brings nothing to the table here.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+125After listening to that entire interview, I can say that, without question, Garfield is an *****.
- mikelieman, on 10/12/2007, -21/+96How the hell do the shareholders permit him to do interviews? Every single time it's a trainwreck.
- nunbot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+79maybe i'm really really really slow.
but i never saw hodgeman's character as bill gates, i've always thought that was the 'pc' (since he always says 'Im a pc!').
btw, garfield is a flesh crank interviewer; he should seriously learn how to interview properly - bzzq, on 10/12/2007, -7/+76Listen to the last part of the interview with Gates: http://www.fscklog.com/2007/03/bill_gates_alle.html#more
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -43/+107"7of7 works for microsoft or something"
Or, he's like me. While he may not hate OSX, he's getting tired as ***** at people jumping on a trend and subsequently making baseless accusations at completely viable OS in the process. Loving Apple is trendy. Bashing MS has always been trendy due to their success. And it seems that people think that praising Apple while bashing MS at the same time somehow earns them extra cool points. I STILL haven't seen one reason OSX is any better than windows that hasn't been completely regurgitated marketing *****. They only thing I've ever been able to gripe at microsoft for is their licensing practices....and really, when compared to Apple, at least you can buy windows without buying a damn PC. Apple won't let you buy for PC because they don't want people to figure out that now that they've switched to X86, the Mac isn't even needed anymore. People can run OSX on their PCs if Apple allowed it, which they won't.
The truth of the matter is people simply wish to try something new and they feel they need to distance themselves from the established OS to do it, so they trashtalk MS up and down so they can justify to themselves spending too much money on a shiny white plastic trendy computer. It's just a damn computer choice and the cult following Apple is building up is getting to be over the top silly. People are starting to treat it like a religion almost. Rabid Coke vs Pepsi advocates look at the Apple camp and go, "God damn people, calm down" - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -44/+108How does that make him "not amused"? He just didn't want to comment.
- ihaveplans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67Better make that a batch file, actually.
- Clbck, on 10/12/2007, -9/+71I love Windows, and love OS X, but tolerate fan boys from both. =/
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -12/+73The interviewer was wrong in that Hodgman IS Gates. Hodgman is Gates' customers, not himself.
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -8/+60This guy gives billions to charity and you call him the devil.
- lookitsbeige, on 10/12/2007, -7/+57I agree! Gates is not so bad. People make it seem like he is responsible for Microsoft's problems. He's not. And despite what you think of Microsoft we still have to give it up for Bill. He revolutionized an entire generation in computing! And Yes! I am a PC/Mac owner, but i still respect the Gates.
- mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61"I'm not amused by those Apple commercials either."
Neither am I (not a big fan of Gates either). The one where the PC is in such bad shape because kids got a hold of it and the Mac is so much more kid-friendly. Absolute BS -- any computer can easily get screwed up with kids. It doesn't matter what OS you're running or even your hardware, for that matter. If there's a way to mess it up, kids will find it all too quickly. Kid-friendly? As much as I'm a Linux fan, there's no OS more kid-friendly than Windows when you count the games and educational programs available for all ages, many of them on them free as well.
Another one I just laugh at is the one with the PC guy holding up the ad banners and the Mac guy mocks him. Excuse me, Mac Guy, but isn't that exactly what you're doing in those commercials? And no, you're all that subtle either. Lol.
The board at Apple seems to be under the illusion that a low ad budget has been the only thing preventing widespread adoption. I'm sorry, but that's not just true. Very typical -- like it or not, Mac fans, but Apple is legendary for arrogance. - Actionjakson, on 10/12/2007, -42/+88So you're saying OSX is inferior to Vista and thats why Apples ad focus is on saying they are better than Microsoft? I may be alone here but I tolerate windows and love OSX.
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -8/+53i'm no fanboy.. but that interviewer is a douche

However, in regards to philanthropy:
Bill Gates > *
So hear what he has to say on the topic. - insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28@geekitechture
I'm fairly certain Gates intended to say that Windows is the most used piece of software in the world, not Vista. Which I think would actually have to be correct. - kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28A company says that their own products are great, and the competition sucks? No way! If we can't trust advertising, what can we trust?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Gates seems to have problems exiting TV & radio shows like a normal person.
- Venom339, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Garfield was being an ***** about it, it was clear bill didn't want to comment on the subject, why push it?
Honestly, it's easy to make fun of Microsoft as a whole, but I don't think anyone can actually stand there and basically insult Bill gates, this man has done more for humanity through his foundation then anyone one here.
And yes I do own a Mac, I'm using it right now, but that doesn't mean I'll just be an Apple sheep and claim Windows and Microsoft are evil and completely useless. In fact, this is exactly why I hate about 98% of Mac elitist, and Apple's ads.
Apple will lie to get you to buy their products, and make you feel like ***** three months later for not getting the new upgraded version that'll always be double in every way to your current product at the same price you paid, there by making yours seem like half the cost.
Macs are not as crash proof as Apple claims, I spent over 10 grand on an Apple workstation believing it was true, only to have it kernel panic after only 3 hours of use. Go ahead and digg me down, I honestly don't care, it's the blatant truth. - thehuskerfan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c356/zaroi/LOL/254024NSUR_w.jpg

Takes forever to load but the Coral Cache delivers.
The worst comment Bill made in that interview by far was calling Vista "the most-used piece of software in the world." It's a lie, he must *know* it's a lie....last I heard (about a week ago) MS couldn't get anyone to pirate Vista much less to buy a copy, and it's official release was/is considered an absolute disaster, the worst showing of any MS product since ME...someone correct me if I'm wrong?
As to him having to be coaxed into saying "Goodbye," he probably was a little ticked...but not at the Mac ad reference but the question before that about his charitable work. You could see his language slipping, becoming broken and almost incoherent (like George Bush's is). Just for what it's worth Bill Gates (and it's suspected George W. too) suffers from a mild form of autism that can produce that sort of behavior when he is "set off" by something. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21@geekitechture
I have heard people speculate that about Gates before but not Bush.
Let me just clear some things up-- rocking in your chair is not a sign of autism, neither is stutter. He is not known for any particular genius either except perhaps his strong competitive nature and his card playing skills-- he is a very social person, unlike someone suffering from even the most mild form of autism.
Next some doctors have speculated that Bush is in the early stages of pre-senile dementia, which is somewhat plausible ( http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2004/09/14/a_medical_cause_for_bushisms/ ) -- but unknown. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22> Why would you buy an OS without a Machine?
Perhaps you ** already own ** a machine which is technically capable of running the OS, and the only reason you can't run it is a marketing decision? Back in the PPC days, there was a technical reason preventing most PCs from running OS X. With the Intel chips however, they are the same as a vanilla PC (but usually in a nicer case). Yes you would still need to be careful about your hardware selection so you end up with drivers, but the only people advantaged by this artificial lockdown is Apple.
Perhaps you don't want a Mac, perhaps you want to run different operating systems using VMWare on your laptop? Your choices are to then buy a Macbook or to buy a second machine. Not to criticise the Macbook, but it is about choice.
> You CAN buy OS X with out buying a Mac.
Technically correct but a stupid point. I can buy a PS3 without buying a TV. Unless I have a TV, I can not use it. This is like if Sony turned around and made the PS3 only work with Sony TVs because they wanted to sell more hardware. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Because it's useless flaming and irrelevant to the story.
- sirber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Second Life?
best start with http://www.getafirstlife.com/ - nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@DolphinGL: It's nice that you are trying to express a middle-ground, rational position, but 7of7 is a troll, pure and simple. This has been more than evident in his comments about anything that isn't pro-Microsoft, especially Linux.
- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I found this comment from Bill Gates quite interesting... given the fact that Kevin Rose ridiculed this very same idea on Diggnation (it was pitched to him by some random stranger), calling it a stupid idea:
GATES: "The richness of the web experience has a long ways to go. For example, when you shop online today, it is just a two-dimensional list of products. That'll change to be that you'll see a three-dimensional store that you can walk around and serendipitously see different, say, book titles and merchandise that may be of interest to you. ... In fact, one of the ways you'll get that is you'll go into what Microsoft calls Virtual Earth, and you'll just be walking around the downtown on your screen, and you'll see a store, you'll say you want to go in, and there you are looking at all the offerings that they have, whether it's an art gallery, bookstore, restaurant -- and that's a new experience. ..." - Zera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14John Hodgeman isn't supposed to be Bill Gates in those commercials. He's portraying a caricature of an Apple idealog's view of a PC. Its an ANALOGY. Hodgeman is to a PC what the other guy is to an Apple. LOL He's not supposed to be Gates... That's just ridiculous. If he was supposed to be Bill Gates they'd have found an actor to make fun of Bill's voice no doubt.
And guys, the whole Apple/PC debate is old. Get over it. They're different computers with different uses. End of story.
No doubt this interviewer is a nobody who knew that if he could get a controversial sound byte out of Gates that he'd spark some interest in his contribution to that website. Guess what. It worked. - DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Most people like candy. And a nice ass can always be appreciated.
- uuhclem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Hilarious, Gates mentions that we will be shopping in 3-D malls, picking up 3d books, is this straight out of Chriton's Disclosure book from 95? I think these interfaces have failed.. move on...
- Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@mikelieman:
YDRC. You didn't even see the Daily Show tape, did you? There was no tension in the interview, BG was smiling and shook Jon Stewart's hand, but then was, as guests sometimes are, confused as to whether he should stay on the set until they went into commercial or get up and leave. He got up and left. On the Daily Show and many other interview shows I have seen guests do the same thing - either get up and leave, or rise to leave and the host catches them and tells them to stay. The Daily Show then chose to make a routine out of it the next night, which this *huge* fan of the show thought was a rare moment of meanness.
I'll be honest and say that I sometimes feel really sorry for the guy. The amount of jealousy and haters who go after him personally on everything from money, manners, or even personal hygiene has got to make life pretty hard. I'd be pretty short tempered with the the number of dicks who try to go after him every day. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19@DolphinGL: Don't assume that just because it's the internet (and Digg, for that matter) that every single person loves Apple and bashes Microsoft because it's trendy.
I used Microsoft products (my earliest recollection of using a computer is using DOS, can't remember the version number) up until about two years ago, when I made the leap to OS X (and Apple products, of course). I love it. I've grown to not like using Windows (mostly because I'm used to OS X by now), and it's no big deal.
I understand that people have preferences for different OSes, and that one single OS is NOT for everybody. If you love to use Windows, that's cool. Nobody should bash you because you like to use Windows.
Fanboy-ism is overrated, and (ideally) that crap attitude fades away as you get older. Thank god. - mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"You CAN buy OS X with out buying a Mac"
Sure, but you can't buy one and install it on your PC without a crack. With Windows you can buy a PC from *anybody* or build one yourself. With OSX you have to buy a Mac from Apple or you can't use it.
Way to go with the BS double-talk to defend Apple, fanboy. I'm pretty sure it was obvious that was what the original poster meant and you should realize that if you have an IQ over 60, but you ignored it to come up with an excuse for your god. - jeff303, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26@DolphinGL
There's just one problem with your argument. I bash Windows not because it's popular, but because I think Windows is inferior to its competition. - Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11...pot shots?
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using Macs since '86, and I can admit that Macs have flaws.
It does annoy me to no end that there's no balanced opinions anymore though, everything is a flamewar. Microsoft isn't evil, sure they've screwed up lots of times, but Apple is by no means flawless either.
Anyway, the bugs I have encountered so far (and I've been on OSX now for 5 years..) have been windows not retaining their view settings, and yes, the kernel panic 3 times. That was because I took the heatsink out of my G5, went to dinner, forgot about it and turned it on.. Now *that's* stupid.
I think sometimes you just get a crappy computer from Apple, it's rare, but it happens. Quality control isn't perfect. Apple's pretty good at it though, they do a good job of their hardware and software, that's why I like using them. If there's a bug, it's updated within a very short timespan, features are rolled out on a regular basis, and security is always being finetuned.
I've used Windows in a working environment, and it was by no means as problematic as people make out, but I prefer Macs because they fit in better with my production pipeline, and Apple has done a great job with application and OS integration. Simple.
Jimzip :D - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12As I'm getting auto-dugg-down anyway, I'll have another comment. I think what Gates is talking about there IS a stupid idea... although I can see a 3d 'virtual world' main menu and sub menus a bit easier to navigate on really over-stuffed sites like Amazon. The individual titles need to not be 3d... that's just stupid.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm sorry.. Candy-ass OSX?
http://www.jimzip.com/Random/OS_comp_01.jpg
Jimzip :D - NordicSkiing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Honestly I can only think this:
Garfield: I am Mac.
Gates: I hate you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ha John Hodgeman is funny
- HolisticIsland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The worse part to me is how they show the interviewer with a normal expression on his face and show Bill Gates with his mouth open in the most unflattering pose possible. I'm no Bill Gates fanboy but that is pretty low of the interviewer (or Advertising Age).
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I don't think it's interesting at all. Well, it may be interesting in that it shows how out of touch Bill Gates is with innovative technology. Technology does not emulate real life in all situations, nor should it. So talking about walking down the main street of a city is a pretty worthless application of technology or the internet -- if you want to do that, you could just go and ACTUALLY walk down main street. This isn't to say that we should eschew technology completely, but there's a reason why we keep looking at a "2-dimensional list of products" on the web -- it's easy to browse through, and it provides all the information in one page without forcing you to go elsewhere to answer your own questions. It's all right there, organized alphabetically, or by type, or by date created, or by whatever criterion you want to sort.
Imagine if I actually did visit a site online that allowed me to browse a store like I would in real life. I would hate it. Why would I want to browse shelves of products as they were presented to me by the shelving guy? If I wanted to find something alphabetically, I wouldn't be able to do so -- I would have to walk down each aisle, looking at the categories and making an educated guess as to whether the product lives in that aisle, until I find the product I wanted. (I actually really hate this in practice -- sometimes at the grocery store, there are items that don't clearly fit into the categories shown in the aisle labels, and sometimes you just want to quickly find it and in doing so you accidentally overlook one of the labels.) Or how about physical placement? If an online site emulated real life, I would have to move around the store like I do in a normal grocery store, instead of just quickly browsing through a long list of products.
As for "serendipitously" run into other stuff, you can do this on the web already. It's called linking. When I read a weblog I like, I follow the links on the page, whether they're directly from the text or from some random sidebar on the site. They might link to a video which then has a list of top rated videos on the page, which might then link to a different store or website, etc. That kind of serendipity is already present on the web.
If Kevin Rose ridiculed this idea, then he's right. Just because Bill Gates is the richest man in the world doesn't mean that he got there by having good ideas instead of by ripping off customers and making crappy products. - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So? Liberal media outlets do the same thing to Bush or whoever else will sell their crap... Though those conservative bastards do it too... Bah, I hate being marketed at :(
