- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did any of you actually listen to the piece? It says APPLE IS TO UNVEIL A NEW VIDEO iPOD AT THE BBC TELEVISION CENTER IN LONDON ON OCTOBER THE 12th, THE COMPANY IS EXPECTED TO REVEAL DETAILS OF THE NEW MP3 AND VIDEO PLAYER, AS WELL AS VIDEO BUNDLES TO BE AVAILABLE FROM THE COMPANY'S iTUNES STORES...
It doesn't say, they are EXPECTED TO UNVEIL. This is real, and it is gonna kick ass, and also, it will cost like 500 bucks, just like the stupid photo iPod did at first, that's why it won't compete with the Nano, not to mention it is not going to be anywhere near as small as the Nano.
I read somewhere in regard to the announcement on the 12th that they also are going to be releasing a set top box, which would explain where the content will come from. If that's true, then I would guess they will let you load your TV shows onto the thing, they could include DRM, and then when it get's hacked they can just tell Hollywood that they couldn't do anything about that, then the next thing you know it will push Hollywood to start selling movies on iTunes for like 10 bucks each. That is my prediction. I also predict that people who hate Apple will continue to not get laid much, and hence, will keep bitching. - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was only a few minutes behind you on submitting this one. Good find. +digg
- thehotchick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope if it IS a video iPod they announce, it is stapled to new 970 Dual core PowerMac, because THAT is what Apple needs.
There is such a small demand for video on mobile devices right now. Especially PAY content. - tfedullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/6music_aod.shtml?6music/6m_news
u can listen to it, but it says apple is expected, not apple will they could just be reporting on the hype about this also.... - ZeroLogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm Ullbay Itshay
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like the last line best DrMerle
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, they never said that it was going to be released. They just said that they expect apple to release it. Every site has been saying that they expect apple to release it, it doesnt mean anything guys. It's just another rumor.
- clharlem149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't understand why everyone is discussing watching movies on a video iPod. iPods have always been for music, they wouldn't suddenly turn to the movie industry. Plus, the iPod has always been about large amounts of storage space, which doesn't really matter when you're talking about movies because there's only so much movies (1-2) you can watch before your player dies. the video iPod, if it ever comes about, will serve the purpose of having a library of music videos in your pocket. Music videos are short and many can be watched before your player runs out of battery power. movies may be an aside, but music videos will be the sensible target product. A video iPod shouldn't be compared with a PSP, which is first and foremost a handheld GAMING system (no matter how bad the library). As it was built with a large screen, it is also optimal for portable movie viewing. This is why the movie industry distributes UMD versions of DVD releases. They know that you can only watch about two movies at a time before your PSP dies, and so a user will only have to carry around 2-3 small media in their pocket at one time, which is not a big hassle. no one really needs a library of movies in their pocket, but a library of music videos is optimal for the iPod market. this is why the PSP and the iPod are in two completely different lanes. If a video iPod is released, it most likely will not be marketed as just a video iPod, but rather a new generation of iPods with video playing capabilities. i will be surprised if the iPod sees a huge jump between the audio-only versions to the video-enabled ones.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why is an Apple video player such big news when there have been other video players out there for some time? I've had a Creative Zen PMC for over a year. Yawn."
Apple generally have a specific and refined way of doing things. They produce products which ordinary people can use and their stuff just works. I'm sure a device ,like the creative zen PMC you have, woud be fine for most digg users since you can work with limitations such as ease of use, due to your technical knowledge, but for the majority of consumers they need somethning fairly easy to use, but at the same time digital prosumers need to have a product which they can use for their needs so it needs to be scalable. Just look at all the accessories and software out there for the ipod, plus all the services around it like podcasting, godcasting etc. It is a huge industry in itself so any move apple make will affect them. Also you might not have heard of this but apple is an industry leader in content creation. I would personally love to see flash animations and iMovie/finalcut indie films more often. It would open up another world of information and entertainment, just look athe the diggnation vidcasts. DTV is a cool application, i can't wait to see more content. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm... it turns out state-controlled media is good for somthing afterall!
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if apple release a video ipod, it will have to be $400 minimum. no one is going to buy a vPod to hold 3 movies.
hopefully H.264...you know it will... - Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm getting hot and bothered just THINKING of a video iPod. Mmmm, ooo yeah baby, you like that resolution... mmmm....
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously, if it comes out I'll be mad. I bought my Nano no more than a week ago. Grr. It better be fake.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if a psp had an 80 gig hard drive it would sell like ipods sell. If you want to watch a movie on a psp you have to get the movie in .Avi and pay 150$ for the memory stick to watch it and you cant connect it to a TV. Thats why a video Ipod is so exciting! 75 full length movies in your pocket at all times that can be watched on the player itself or connected to a tv!!!
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why are the "sneak peaks" always shot in the dark on a low res camera?
- alexw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay, another gimmick to add to the iPod family. What's this? The EIGHTH one?! Yeesh.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not including the 30 or so UMD movies
- WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all this rumor and hype business is getting rather old. just unveil it for petes sake.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mad23dog, you'd probably want an iPod Video, it'll actually have some games on it. Breakout on the iPod video is still better than any of the disappointing PSP releases.
If Apple doesn't release the iPod Video, how pissed will people be? Personally I don't think they will release one this year, it would just compete with their popular iPod Nano. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*cpu power
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if they did make one, how many video formats will it support? with the extra cpu will it play more than just mp3s?
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stevie J. will be saddened.. lol he was sooo happy when nooone leaked info about the nano.
- mad23dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if they do come out with a ipod video i may have more trouble in decideing if I want a PSP or Ipod
- clharlem149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do they have that stupid picture with the article?
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if Ipod nano's have up to 14 hours of battery life(whether its really does or not) the video ipod should have at least up to 10 hours (even if it really only gets 7 or so ) of video playback. And if your using it with a tv you can charge at the same time. Im sure battery life was/is one of Apple's biggest problems, but to sell it to the public they must have overcome it.
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea i think its *****.
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll believe it when i see it. It seems to me to be a stupid move. They just released the nano, which still goes for around 200 dollars, and now theyre going to put out an iPod video? It will have to sell for atleast 300+ IMO. It seems to me that this is a mistake. Bad form!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the picture of the widescreen ipod has been out for a while now...i wonder if its actually true
- Gunnyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops I saw the picture and didn't read the story
the PICTURE is fake - purpanther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love all the controversy here! Why does everyone go insane about this? I don't want a video ipod until I can buy/rent movies on itunes ... then we'll have something going on. Goodbye Netflix and hello itunes movie subscription!
- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is an apple event scheduled on october 12th
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alaerus said "there is no way I would pay the + $400 some of you are speculating it would cost (and most likely correct). Heck I could just get a PSP and a big memory stick."
Your comparison is seriously flawed. a PSP costs $250 and a 1 gig memory stick costs around $75. That's $325 to play a movie and maybe 2 TV shows? And that's assuming that you don't have any music on the memory stick. Compare that to a player that will have AT LEAST 20 gigs and be a lot smaller and compact than a PSP. I'm not just talking about a video ipod but any decent portable video player out there. - Dingle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think that people in the market for a nano should be consider the same for a vpod. Its gonna cost about double the price. People who get the nano could care less about the hard drive size. I would never get a nano but am looking forward to a possible ipod. If its any news my friend works at an apple store and says in his opinion it looks like the stores are getting ready for something ipod related.
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rumors..
but a apple special event about powerbooks/powermacs is not worth it. I knew there would be something else. - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0direct link next time.
- dogggdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im sorry but are you kidding me? A video IPOD better than a PSP. hmmmm. A psp which can play UMD's, has WIFI internet, can play video, mp3, plays games which in the future can kick ass, displays pictures, and with hackers out there the thing can pretty much play anything out there in regards to games, programs, the like, plus there is talks of broadcasting TV on it. all a video IPOd will have is lots of Gigs, video, pics, music, and some stupid pixel games. dont talk about price cuz if you can afford one then you definitely can afford the other. they aint that split in prices. i'll stick with my psp on this one.
- dogggdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good point and i accept your argument. i especially agree with the fact that ipods and psp are two different alleyways in terms of that type entertainment you want. wanna watch lots and lots of movies and lots and lots of music get the ipods or other media players. want something with a little of everything but is built specifically to play all sorts of games? get the psp. what i usually do is put 3 episodes of the latest show im into, pack a few songs, and bring the game Lumines with me on a trip and to me thats practically overkill for a 2 hour plane ride or trip. i never understood why anyone would need 20 gigs to access, unless im going to be away from my comp for a long period of time,. i usually refill my psp memory stick whenever i get home with something new for the next trip i make. but thats just my style. i guess it all comes down to how you want things.
- dogggdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a psp would suck if you bought it solely for music... and by the way, a psp can last up to 12 hours if you just play music on it, i have the ipod nano for the music end of things. buts thats only if i feel like listening to 12 hours+ of music
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Until the PSP is hard drive based, they're not comparable products. That's really my main point here. If you're going to play games more than you're going to want to watch movies and listen to music, get a PSP. At this point in time it's just not economical AT ALL to buy sony's overpriced flash memory if you want to watch a lot of movies on your PSP. I currently own an Archos AV400 and it's one of the best purchases i've made because i wanted a SMALL portable device to watch video and listen to music on. If i cared more about playing games I definitely would have gone with a PSP. I'm not denying that it's a great product, i'm just making the point that they're different products.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We'll find out the truth on Tuesday... although I really hope it is a video iPod; not a PowerBook or PowerMac. Anyway, why would Apple hold a special event for a PowerBook/Mac? It just doesnt make sense. Usually they just change the specs and have a graphic on apple.com to announce it.
- Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd love to get a video iPod, but there is no way I would pay the + $400 some of you are speculating it would cost (and most likely correct). Heck I could just get a PSP and a big memory stick.
- daurkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My opinion is that the BBC reporter was basing it off the rumor mill and that old photo that we've seen before.
I'll wait until the official announcment. - brainache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DrMerle: "APPLE IS TO UNVEIL A NEW VIDEO iPOD AT THE BBC TELEVISION CENTER IN LONDON ON OCTOBER THE 12th, THE COMPANY IS EXPECTED TO REVEAL DETAILS OF THE NEW MP3 AND VIDEO PLAYER, AS WELL AS VIDEO BUNDLES TO BE AVAILABLE FROM THE COMPANY'S iTUNES STORES..."
Ok seriously, because if the BBC sais this, then this is happening. Seeing as its being unvailed in BBC television center, im guessing that the BBC will be putting content on it too? That would really rock.
Is it coincidence that i cant find the news buletin about this now? The link at the top of the pace just has the latest news, which doesnt include this story. - rjespo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I own a mac and have owned 3 iPods, but I have to say that Apple better release an amazing product if it dares to release a portable video player. The recently reviewed $400 Zen Vision on CNET has an excellent screen, iPod-like interface (albeit with harsh color scheme), 4.5 hours of battery life with optional double capacity battery, and support for most major formats. There is room for improvement -- in CONTENT. That is where Apple would be able to offer an advantage.
All of this said, I can't think of a good enough reason to pay $400-500 to watch video on a tiny screen. -- I don't commute on a train, and if I did, I'd probably rather just listen to music. It's hard to concentrate on a tiny screen when you're on a moving vehicle (except for on a plane), especially with people moving in and out and constant bumps and acceleration. Plus you'll look like an idiot holding a screen in your face.
On planes, it's easier to watch video on a laptop with its bigger screen. So besides novelty and coolness, the only selling factor I see is if the player allows connection to TV's. I could see loading up 5 or 6 movies onto a small player and bringing it to friends' places or on small trips. We'll see ... maybe we'll all eat our words. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god that picture is not the actual video iPod, because that looks really lame.
- mac-interactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brainache: s it coincidence that i cant find the news buletin about this now? The link at the top of the pace just has the latest news, which doesnt include this story.
I knew they wouldn't bother to delete it from the stream of Wednesday's programs:
http://homepage.mac.com/macinteractive/.Music/Beebleak.m4a - dogggdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and theres a remote for psp . but thats besides the point since the psp is too big to put in your pocket.
- mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I carry my PSP in my trouser pocket all the time. Also fits neatly into fanny pack.
Only one person above seems to understand this article links to a FAKE, but anyway...
If there is an iPod Video on the way, I'd buy it even though I have the PSP. They're different tools: you don't cut a steak with a spoon, and you don't eat ice cream with a knife, even though both are eating utensils. - puny_midget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0H.264? On a tiny, portable device with a massive harddrive and battery attatched? I think not. You need a decent processor to do H.264, and on an iPod, it'll just get really hot and drain power.
And in regards to the people who have doubts about a PSP. My 1GB memory stick has a movie (~500MB), like 4 episodes of family guy (~50mb each), around 30 songs (not much i know, but its enough), with room left over for pics. It's not like you're going to spend more than 7 hours straight away from a computer, holding an expensive brick up to your face anyway. I used to carry it everywhere in my pocket (i have deep pockets) but then it got old and i just went back to my 30GB Photo. - nifu3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww shiet
