- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -3/+37I had one of these! I was a youngin, and my mom was dating this really mac crazy guy. Guy kinda turned out to be a weirdo, but somehow I came into alot of his gadgets (IE, a G3 powerbook, the PowerCD, a home theatre system, narcotics, etc).
- BloodJunkie, on 10/19/2007, -10/+41worst. ipod. ever.
- odoodle100, on 10/19/2007, -3/+26the grandaddy of the ipod Hi-Fi??
- bjzq8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Dude, sick. That stuff must have totally ruined the electronics and gummed up the works...
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Here's mine. Got it new in box in 2002 (eBay):

it's current setup: http://www.blakespot.com/images/plasma/5060_sm64.jpg
...it's a pretty stylish addition to the setup, I think. Tied into the Yamaha / Energy Take surround system.
Linked from: http://www.blakespot.com/list/ - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Tha's a surprisingly sleek design (at least to me) for a product from 1993. I mean, it certainly outdoes the boomboxes that were around then...
- Lurk3r, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26"Now we know why the iPod is crap."
The PowerCD contains No DRM! Actually, this is probably the best portable music device that Apple ever came out with. - zaid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I actually had this at my highschool. I was part of this EE course, which really was a way for the CS teacher to get people to help him clear out the backlog of old computers from their closets. 3 people plus the CS teacher. Needless to say, everyone ended up with 95% in that "course". (DMThomson Represent!)
Found one of these in out old AV room. No remote, no speakers, but it worked like a charm. Great little peice of hardware. Sturdy too, as its been dropped quite a few times since its first purchase, and our eventual find sometime in early 2004. We connected it to some regular desktop speakers, and added in an old amp we found later on, and we had ourself a great little stereo for the eventual EE course (the real one, with actual theory and tests...).
Feel kind of sad seeing this up here like its just another anomaly. This thing really has some history to it... - Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16WARNING: That is an affiliate link cloaked with tinyurl. Mod this guy down.
- stickyboot, on 10/19/2007, -2/+12I remember playing The Journymen Project with with one of these on my mac. I used to think it was the coolest thing in the world untill one day it just stopped working. Aparently they had a tendancy to stop working after a while.
- drewcare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i still have one. we used it to add CD-ROM functionality to our LC II. It was awesome back in the day.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You know, its fairly easy to debunk your DRM comment... yes the iPod supports playing the iTunes store files that has DRM... but at the same time... you ready for this? It can play Mp3's and unprotected AAC files...
shocking I know... I hope I didn't shock you to the point where I caused phyiscal damage... - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9More pics: http://www1.kcn.ne.jp/~gx770/portaudio.html#PowerCD
- milerdiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I still have one of these devices. My aunt worked for Apple back in the 90s, and came over one day with an Apple PhotoCD and said "you need one of these!" It was cool back in the day because the Kodak PhotoCD craze was taking off and connecting it to your television was innovative -- in addition to having it connect to your SCSI-based Macintosh. I believe CD-ROMs were hitting 4x and this was a little slower, but people loved the added functionality.
I have my old device all packaged up, and was going to put it on eBay when I get a free moment. - trebe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This looks so much better than the ipod hifi.
I had no idea this existed - mercatfat, on 10/19/2007, -6/+13Yeah, don't come into people's electronics (or naracotics). No matter how sexy Macs may be, it's not worth it.
- codepoet80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow, I hate it when people use something like this to brag about their set-up, but... I gotta admit, I'm pretty impressed. Good looking kit, and I love the respect paid to the old-school hardware -- not only is there PowerCD in there, but a Dreamcast appropriately placed on top of a PS2.
Actually I have a lot of similar gear, but I doubt my wife would ever let me get a TV like that... - ziggr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Pretty. Unusable remote. Slow.
I won one of these free at Macworld San Francisco way back when it came out.
It sure was pretty. It was the best looking component in my hobbled-together college stereo system.
But the remote was annoyingly complex, I never could use it without looking at it to find the right button.
I couldn't stand using it as a CD-ROM drive. When 2x drives were selling for the same price and 4x drives were coming out, shipping a 1x CD-ROM drive was just sad.
So it worked best as a piece of sculpture, not as a functional piece of audio or computer equipment. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He's either Comic Book Guy, or William Shatner.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i think he's talking about the cost of a cd burner in 1993. to answer the question, you took your 35mm film to the developing shop and told them you wanted it on photo cd.
- jedeye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A nice pair of headphones on that page you linked to.
http://www1.kcn.ne.jp/~gx770/AVdev/001mk2_d100.jpg - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Scanners were NOT that expensive in 1993... Several hundred maybe, but not thousands.
- revidium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And to think, people complain about old news.
- lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You have to understand: this was back when most computers had no optical drive. Back in the old days of 80MB hard drives and 3½" floppies.
If they released an external drive using some funky new tech that most computers didn't have (and I didn't have room for in my enclosure), sure. - kenz0r, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4@ account, obviosly the man(or woman) is using diction to show long pauses in the wording.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I had one of these things. I loved mine. I kept it for years, jut simply because it was so compact.
Then I got my Blue & White G3 and out went SCSI!
Sad to see it go in the end... - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Forget the iPod, give me one of these!!!!!
It's good to see Apple's product designs have improved since this awful looking product - dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Front Row... is that yoU?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Maybe it made Digg because people like to look back on the product line of a company that seems to be reinventing itself every day. If you don't like moving forward with technology then be my guest, we always need new people to run boiler rooms.
- woodchucklove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought this for around $400 at the time for either my color classic or quadra. I believe it was 2x and could play cd-roms, audio cd's, and Kodak photo cds. It even hooked up to your tv so you could gather the family round and watch your photos. It came with Animals!, MacGlobe, and some really lame 3D game that I can't remember. I just remember the PowerCD being very intermittent, and eventually it stopped playing anything but audio cds.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i don't have the CD player, but do have the speakers... came with a performa 6400... that tower had a subwoofer built into it.
180mhz of screaming PPC603 action. Coudn't even use iTunes 1 on it. Gawd. Remember Apple CD player app? Ahh yeah.
Later scrubbed the drive and put Yellow Dog linux on it... worked like a charm.
The speakers are currently connnected to a Philips CD walkman in my spare bedroom. Still sound great. - green67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow,I totally forgot abut this product..but the mere images have unlocked a doorway to my past when I actually wanted to buy Apple but it was allways way out of my price reach...for '93 I still belive that was a pretty cool looking device, then again I wanted a Newton as well..had to settle for a "Wizard"...thanks for the trip down memory lane...dugg
- MRKisThatKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That bizarre remote control used to be Philips standard issue remote for a fair few years. We've got a Philips CD player with the same remote, except for different button assignments obviously. Hmm, looking at that PowerCD device, the whole thing looks quite like a Philips style of design, are you sure it wasn't rebranded by Apple?
- ctishman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, the speed was actually 1.5x, or 225kbps. Most computers saw it as a 2x drive, which allowed me to play Warcraft II on my Performa 460.
P.S.No Way Out Of This Maze was the best .pud evar. - TheShrike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I never had one, but I can remember thinking that it was a great idea for the time. Did you like it?
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10how the ***** is this "Awesome!"?
- dmsteg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh... I still have a pair of the Apple Power Speakers, and until recently still used them.
Really good sound... though I wouldn't replace every stereo in my house with them. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look for Paul Kunkel's book "Appledesign." It shows and tells the design story of most of Apple's products. Lots of photos of prototypes too.
Unfortunately it appears to have gone out of print, so you'l either have to check the library, or pony up the $130 some people are asking for it:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1888001259 - adb22791, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Heh, I definatly remember having one of those...
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still have a PowerCD. I don't use it. (Anyone wanna buy it?) I even wrote a letter to Macworld in 1994 (I think) about it that got printed. I was correcting several errors in their review.
Single speed...so slow, but it could still work well as a CD player...if my iPod's not handy. - PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it's the same remote. I programmed a universal remote with a Phillips code (10 years ago) and it worked perfectly with PowerCD.
- methodshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've had every apple product from the original Macintosh to the QuickTake. But i never even heard about the PowerCD until this Digg. The PowerCD and the Apple Pippin are probably the rarest Apple products ever released. Even finding one of them on eBay is extremely difficult.
how much would you sell the PowerCD for? email me here http://www.methodshop.com/about/contact.shtml - shumacher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wanted one of those and either a Duo + Duo Dock or MacTV. Those were some of the coolest Apple products of the mid-90's. Maybe I'll head on over to the eBay…
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have AppleDesign Powered Speakers and still use them to this day.
- powerbook86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually have one of these. Well most of it...I have the CD loading part, the little "base" or "stand" part is what gives power to the machine to let it operate. Unfortunately I don't have that part. Some more information about this little machine can be found here: http://guides.macrumors.com/PowerCD
- Kelvington, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have at least one of these, without the remote, if anyone is interested in buying one. Pretty sure it still works. I regret I had one of these on my desk in '94 hooked to my dockable mac portable. Let me know!
- blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, the PS2 was originally going to come with that blue horizontal base standard, but they decided it would add too much to the cost so they lost it. It was sold as an option. I'd seen pics of it for so long with that blue thing there that I jumped at the chance to get one when I saw it in a store - though it serves no purpose but to enhance the unit's looks. :-)
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2+ the start of the apple remote, hello.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hell, this is the start of the iPod, i mean pop in some old school headphones at the time & lug it around.
- SSharwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I own one of these beauties and it has survived numerous junk purges because the remote control is the most wonderfully phallic object! Get your hands on one and you will see what I mean.
Sucked as a CD-ROM, tho'. MYST was unplayable on this baby and a Mac LC II. Or maybe that was just MYST ... -
