- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hi Alej744 - you can put Awaken in the menubar. It's in the general preferences. You can also turn off the menubar icon if you like and have Awaken completely invisible. The menubar also shows the date/time of the next alarm. I'd give version 3.0 a try - it a big step up form the 2.x releases.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Right now, I'm using the Gorgy Clock widget in Konfabulator (Yahoo Widget Engine) on Windows. It's nice, free, but doesn't have as many cool features as Awaken does.
That said, I'll definitely be picking this up after I make my switch. :D - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12http://embraceware.com/software/awaken/Awaken3.0Beta1.dmg
direct download... - SpazMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Am I the only one who sees using a beta program to wake you up for something like school or work, potentially a very bad idea? :p
- noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Gotta say, i'm not impressed. I have tried at least 6 alarm programs on my powerbook, even payed for one called PowerController (kinda regret that)... but anywho, powercontroller is good, just not worth the money and I don't like that i have to go to system prefs to change stuff... I've tried the dashboard one mentioned above, its alright; theres one called iAlarm, which was my first, and pretty much sucks these days since it hasn't been updated (and is not free); iRooster is okay...
I've tried Awaken, and while its good, it offers me nothing beyond Alarm Clock, which is free, except for the full screen thing, which I could care less about. Go with Alarm Clock and save yourself some money... http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/index.html - embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The designer of the page is the designer of the app ;) Thanks for the kind feedback.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Kudos to the person who designed the page!
- Beaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've been using Awaken since version 2.something. I don't have a Mac in my room either - but I use airport express/airtunes. It works with Awaken because it plays iTunes music for the alarm.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Awaken rocks!
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8it's has menubar functionality built in now
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9not free, but you can try it for two weeks...and after that its still under 10 bucks, which is pretty good considering the work gone into this
- katanna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Talk to Jerry... I have a feeling that he could make a mail-order exception.
=: >
Matthew - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I personally prefer Aurora. Awaken might "rock", but $9 for an alarm clock is a bit too much. Especially when there's an excellent free alternative.
http://metaquark.de/en/software/aurora/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I could see how this could be useful if you have a laptop and you're in a hotel room with one of those crappy radio alarm clocks.
- katanna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7mmmm.... 3.0.... *drool*
Matthew - dyck15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For those of you who aren't too keen on paying for the program, this one is worth ever dollar. Just don't buy that starbucks for a couple of days ;) After I bought my iBook I spent a few nights looking for (and testing) good alarm clock programs and at the time, (May 05) all the free programs out there were either lacking features, didn't work, or the interface was too chaotic to deserve any more time on. Awaken was a godsend when I found it, and after my free trail was up I was more then happy to send the developers the $10 they deserve.
The only thing I wish they would add support for shared libraries... - extremer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4anything for windows users that are this cool?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yeah, I'm sick of people digging stories that link to stupid blog articles about software rather than to the author's own website.
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You could do that - but remember if you put your computer to sleep, iCal will not wake it up - the iCal event won't fire until after you wake the computer. You could go to the energy saver system preference and schedule a wake up time to solve this - but by this point you have a lot of steps to manage on a day to day basis. The purpose of Awaken is to take all of the work out of this and at the same time - add a lot of additional functionality.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol
not a bad point
but don't worry, all the bugs, as far as the basic, main pupose functioning of the app have probably been squashed for a long time now - zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hey guys
I don't think 10 bucks really is that expensive.. how much does a real alarm clock cost? And does that alarm clock get you free updates for the rest of your life?
Comparatively speaking, Awaken is a steal. And sure, there's free alternative out there... I've used some of them myself, but I keep coming back to awaken because of the great, easy to use interface, the features, the beautiful design of the app, and the fantastic support from the developer.
Oh, and dude? Get a PayPal account. It'd be a lot more convenient than running your disc drive with dollar bills - VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not that I have ever found.
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The thing I love about Awaken vs. the other freeware options is it's awesome interface, and the nice fullscreen alarm. Works great from across the room with the Apple remote for a snooze button.
The devs are very responsive and approachable as well. - Beaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Direct link to the application page:
http://embraceware.com/software/awaken/ - andrewguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no. www.apple.com/retail
- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Look's great, I might start using this more now.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The funny thing is that iPod already has this functionality (minus egg timer) already included – I sometimes hooked up my iPod to my speakers to achieve this effect. It's nice to be able to use my comptuer, though, which is connected to my speakers through AirTunes. I'm thinking this might be worth the $8.95 to keep it.
- VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because some people like being woken up gently instead of abruptly. iCal also only plays the sound/song once and "snoozing" requires eye/hand coordination that someone who just woke up may not be able to perform.
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've been using iRooster - but i might give this a shot.
- jeickholt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1time to get up and make the donuts....
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey James - our server is good - our domain's DNS is being updated.
http://www.embracewaresoftware.com works - embraceware.com will be back in a few hours. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I set my cell phone as a backup alarm. We'll see what happens...
- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1James Earl Jones: "and their server went down in flames of glory"
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very simple alarm clock dashboard widget I use every day. "It lets you pick an iTunes playlist and set a time, and will start playing the given playlist at the given time, by slowly turning up the volume."
http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/widgets/alarm.html - VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The program "Alarm Clock" by Digitallity is pretty good and it's free. It does everything Awaken does. It just doesn't have the really nice interface.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It worked without a hitch. The only thing I noticed was that the music didn't wake me up as well as my regular alarm, but I still woke up within a few minutes. The program slept the computer and woke up when it was supposed to. The only thing I'm still curious about is if it will work if I leave the computer lid shut.
- balmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome, thank you!
- DooDooFace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yep, looks like Alarm Clock has all of the important features. Thanks for the link.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Alarm Clock is the best.
- mikevickrocks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I personally use Awaken myself, but a good free alternative is Aurora. Check it out here. (http://metaquark.de/en/software/aurora/)
- znicket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't get it. Why not simply set up iCal to wake you up every morning with a prechosen song?
- Maniaca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why must people post and then ask to be dugg down? I think we all understand how this works - if you make a dumb post, it'll get dugg down, no request needed :P
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yeah really, WTF
All of my comments were dugg down; I'm not trying to be an *****, I just think Alarm Clock is almost as good and is free. - stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The last time I trusted this app' it crashed and I slept in.
Alarm Clock OTOH never fails, even when waking the computer from sleep... Awaken has a prettier icon tho ;)
http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/ - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Is it free?
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8If it isn't free, I'll stick with Alarm Clock - the best alarm application for OSX available. I tried Awaken a while ago and I couldn't put it in the menubar. An Alarm app should NOT take up space in my dock.
- dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2shameless inaccurate lame spam
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3But it's still not free :'(
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4It's about inconvenience, not money... I would pay for this If I could stick a 10 dollar bill into my CD drive and activate it instantly. And No I do not have a credit card or PayPal.
