- justrapidshare, on 06/06/2008, -0/+30How did this make it to front page - only 2 other earphones tested???
- yraffah, on 06/06/2008, -0/+15buried for lame comparison
- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -2/+13"The solid sound surprised our testers, who expected to write off the bundled buds. But while it lacked the crispness of the Shures and the bass of the Skullcandys, the Apple headset bested the competition in comfort. "
Who the ***** tested those? Apple headphones are by far one of the most uncomfortable headphones on the market. It would be punishment to buy a replacement pair of headphones that numb your ears easy in an hour or less. And personally they sound like crap; the low and band range frequencies adequate lack response for pleasurable listening. - phoomp, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6Burried for uselessness: any decent test would have at least 5 contenders.
- Ocelot13, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6i have a set of skullcandy fmj's for my ipod... theyre actually metal and not plastic like most ear buds, sound good, and all skullcandy products have a lifetime warranty.. which is always nice.
- MMaster23, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6"Crap crap .. the iPhone hype is just around the corner and we still don't have a catchy article to lure in more readers... Quick write a half page summery of useless headphones!"
: - aetherboy, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Duh, it has 3G iphone in the title. Which is completely irrelevant to the story at hand. Buried as spam.
- attercob, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4What a lame article. There are many other headphones that are ready to work with the iPhone. This terrible article only tested two of them. lame.
- magicjohnson, on 06/05/2008, -10/+14Apple headphones are HORRIBLE. If you wanna get some new headphones and still stay moderately cheap, go with Sony.
- solidus636, on 06/06/2008, -1/+5Yeah, those 10 dollar Sony headphones(earbuds..?) are really great.
- rsek, on 06/06/2008, -1/+5 ($120)
made me lol - mastazed, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3the Sennheiser CX300 are a great set of headphones, they are not the greatest but they last and have two years warranty. the short version they ***** all over the apple headphones.
- pyrates, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Trying to base it on the fact that you get it for free is not a good reason to say they are better.
- wolfboyZ, on 06/06/2008, -2/+5Wow, those ***** Apple earphones that come bundled with the iPods cost $30? Those sound-leaking things are terrible! Invest in some decent IEMs people.
- hrvat420, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Im on my 8th pair in 9 months...***** iPhone
and they are 40 bucks here in Canada - chrisxkelley, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3I was about to ask the same thing. When you have a zerg-load of people to Digg your article, you make it. If you have a quality article that you write but have little to no Digg friends, it's impossible to get it anywhere.
Oh... Unless it has "OMG iPhone" in the title. - Septimus, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3Shure's (2xx, or 3xx series) ftw. Think you can buy them with the adapter bundle now also, otherwise you can get the Shure adapter/mic set separately.
- prezzy, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2bore it out
- 2shae, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3Apple earbuds are good enough for most people.
And I ain't spending €50+ for a pair of headphones that look ridiculous. - tico24, on 06/06/2008, -3/+5Buried for saying that the apple headphones are comfortable. They simply aren't.
- Virgule, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2"Apple headphones are by far one of the most uncomfortable headphones on the market."
Well.. they just don't stay in my ears anyway. Can't call that comfortable. > - michaelzhao, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3the recessed jack pisses me off so much... none of my none-apple headphones even fit in the goddamn thing...
great phone, but quite a ***** headphone jack... - maxlightz, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Buried - 3 headsets? lame review ... they completely left out the V-Moda phones which has the mic and call call button and fit and sound spectacular. just picked mine up for $75 on ebay too NIB
- jazzboyrules, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Shure 310 rock! I got them when I had to use the $100 Apple coupon (early iPhone user tax return) and the $75 off during Thanksgiving. They are great while cycling. The same should apply for Shure 110 too. If you love bass, 310 are awesome; if not, 110 should work.
- KibibyteBrain, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2The article also neglects about half of the iPhone designed headphone market. A simple visit to even Apple's online store would have revealed that. Popular Mechanics might what to stick to what they are good at.
- Skunkhair, on 06/06/2008, -2/+4all i know is that the Shure 100 series completely sucks! Sound is *****! Go with the V-Moda, the cheaper sony, or even the Bose In-Ear headphones. Those sound much better.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2I understand you believe there are better phones out there than the iphone. However, the iphone is not "crappy" by any stretch.
- AtomB, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2I have had two sets of Shures, a 100 series and a 300 series and on both the wire that goes over the ear has cracked and fallen off and then the headphones are trash. I have also had one of the adapters for the iphone and that started crackling and wore out after only 3 months. These are great sounding headphones but they don't last.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2I'm glad to see other people who hate the apple headphones. I can't stand them for all the reasons you stated.
- noticarus, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1At that rate the Shure headphones would be a bargain for you in no time.
- donna1234, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Most headphone plugs don't fit the phone's recessed jack.

http://www.alobre.info - DaveOrZach, on 06/06/2008, -2/+3I'd recommend the Ultimate Ear super.fi 4vi. I'm very happy with mine but the play/pause button is a pain to use sometimes.
- pyrates, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1No headphones I find that are not able to be molded to your ear are comfortable. They always are painful after an hour. Hence why I would prefer 1 or 2. I've had my iphone since October and I've never used the apple ear buds. I like inner ear head phones that are cushionie (is that a word?). But my current head phones that were $20 with a bit of tooling of taking the plastic off of the head phone jack works just fine with my iPhone or my other main mp3 player sound great.
- Lewiji, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I have the Sennheiser MM-50 (I think that's the model) which are basically the CX300s with an inline mic/button. They're awesome although a little more pricey than the CX300s because of the mic.
They are really great quality for the price, although there is a slight problem in that they're in-ear earphones, meaning talking with them is a little strange. They sit nicely as regular earphone (without the awesome sound quality) though, so if you're planning to go hands free you can easily pull them out a little for calls. - KibibyteBrain, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2I would really love to hear the story behind how that came about exactly. I'm thinking last minute mechanical flaw resulting between a conflict in how the case was cast compared to the circuit board or something. The only other thing I could think is that Apple got carried away thinking people would actually want to use the bundled set and therefore then thought the recessed jack would help secure the headset. I bet its interesting whatever it was, and also would bet someone got a nice talking to from Steve.
- gonx32, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1www.ultimatebuds.com I have had the UB7 set which use the Etymotic ER 6i ($140) headset for about 4 months now and they are the best I have ever used and you get to keep the in-line clicker I think it's the all around best solution.
- Twinnie, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1N75. FM transmitter will be awesome.
- UnseenLlama, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1You're correct. You can tell by the newer boxes that come with the SE lineup. The newer packaging is box rather than plastic. If the headphones are still in the plastic blister wrap packaging, it will not have the newer headset jack for the iPhone.
- philberttheduck, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2iLounge.com is much better at giving reviews. That was pathetic.
- FearMEiDEA, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Cool! Personally, my favorite headphones are the JBuds J2 earbuds from http://www.JLabAudio.com . I just got an advanced pair, they don’t officially come out until the 28th of November on Amazon. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of the Onyx Black JBuds J2 and they sound GREAT! You can get the details on them at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GS8FZ2 . I’ve had them for a few weeks and they’re the best headphones I’ve ever owned. They are extremely comfortable and very durable.
- obendega, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I have these and they are really nice. I wasn't expecting much when I first tried them on but the sound really is waaay better. They also come with the iPhone answer/paus/play/skp button built in which is really nice.
The newest ones actually have a redesigned play/pause button and it is much easier to operate. - Radan, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1What I'm saying is that you need to compare Oranges to Oranges. Of course a couple of headphones that cost €300 will be better than a couple of standard iPod headphones than they simply throw in for the sake of it.
However, if you compare the iPod headphones with other headphones that come with other devices, they are far from the worst you can get.
I say the standard headphones are like a standard mouse the comes with the computer; they work for most average users, but if you actually want high quality sound, you would need to buy a pair of new ones no matter what was included in the first place. - 7Towers, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Here are the issues which cause me to be super frustrated with Apple and the accessory makers, as they have what seems like every single type of case but they barely have any headphones that work with the iPhone. I’m just looking for the following:
1) IN EAR BUDS! - The headphones that come with the iPhone will not stay in my ears without foam, and even then a light breeze will make them come out. I’m sure that people prefer this type of outer ear bud, but Apple should always make sure they have an option to purchase the others as they do with the iPod.
2) Play/Pause/FF/Answer button – It would be nice if they had more features, but I think that is more of a software issue. I just want to be able to use these features like the original headphones have.
3) Mic – I want to be able to talk… simple enough
4) Sub $50 Price – I think the Vibe Duo has all of my requirements but this one, and the rough way I treat headphones, I can’t justify $30 truly, but I’ll splurge on anything below $50 and the Vibe Duo is $100…. No thanks, I like great audio, but not this much
Please Apple can you help me and million others with non Apple conforming ears!! - macgasm, on 06/07/2008, -0/+1I hate the Apple headphones. Most earbuds don't work for me. My ears are too small and the buds don't really fit comfortably at all. I think I'll be check out the Skull Candy buds, though.
- Tenoq, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1?? Aren't the iPod re-badged CX300s? Does the iPhone use different ones to these?
- Visk, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Skullcandy Smokin' Buds are awesome. I bought them for $30 and the sound is amazing. I picked them over my "noise cancelling" Bose ear buds. If you're playing music, the noise is reduced to basically nothing. The base reproduction is amazing as well.
http://www.skullcandy.com/shop/smokinbuds-p-10.htm ... - TheWorm, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Back when I used Apple earbuds, they would actually bruise the insides of my ears if I left them in for a long time.
- ozziek, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I have no problem with 3rd pary headphones as long as they have a mic so you can take calls on the iphone
- brjndr, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1They didn't include these, which are made for the iPhone.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR138VC/A?fnode= ...
They are expensive. The sound quality is good, but what I also like is that they are not earbuds. I find earbuds very uncomfortable, especially after a few hours, and I use my iPhone 4 hours a day minimum (I have a 2 hour commute to work). -
