- matt247, on 07/30/2008, -5/+121It's a feature.
- thehardgoodbye, on 07/30/2008, -4/+101Those pictures are actually of the iPhone 3G Liberty Bell edition.
- Deist4Life, on 07/30/2008, -8/+71is it really a widespread problem, or are a few people experiencing this and engadget is exaggerating a non-problem to make a story out of it?
- snverhallen, on 07/30/2008, -4/+61Apple needs to realize that this a problem and quick, because some Apple stores aren't replacing cracked iPhones because it is not a "known issue".
- Trax91, on 07/30/2008, -4/+59iPhone 3G is being cracked in ways more than one.
Seriously, why is Apple so skimpish on the materials? Remember the first batch of iPod Nano? The screen didn't seem to last. - Hayes, on 07/30/2008, -2/+38Like ripped jeans. ***** is IN.
- tripm, on 07/30/2008, -1/+27actually they were trying to increase radio signals
- MrDo, on 07/30/2008, -1/+26So they are not all they are cracked up to be?
- pauldy, on 07/30/2008, -0/+25Foxconn: Ok, what about case.
Apple: We were thinking about maybe eggshell
Foxconn Ok, you want eggshell case, no problem. - dpowre, on 07/30/2008, -4/+28Mine has a spiral of cracks around the camera, for no reason.
- pyrates, on 07/30/2008, -0/+21Well sometimes my 2g iPhone would get quite hot and then cool again which the aluminum back would handle quite well. So I'm guessing this is being caused by the device heating and cooling which expands the plastic then when it cools it shrinks back down.
- mrgodai, on 07/30/2008, -4/+23it's the new iEgg, it's just hatching
- RadicalEdward, on 07/30/2008, -3/+22Actually they do. Apple has a reputation for not fixing/replacing products, especially with cosmetic issues, if it's not considered a "known" issue. So if no one talks about it, apple won't do anything
- billjimbob, on 07/30/2008, -1/+19I have a black one, so thankfully (?) I can't see any scratches on mine. But if it gets to be more than just a cosmetic problem, Apple is going to have a serious problem on their hands.
Also, judging by the engadget comments, it's odd that some people apparently have these cracks on Macbooks, too. How did Apple's QA miss this one? - Frozo, on 07/30/2008, -1/+18It's amazing how those "geniuses" will stare you cold in the face and robotically spew the words "not a known issue." I've heard it for so many reasons over the years. You can show them something doesnt work but if its not on Apples list (which I suspect is actually ON a list of things to specifically NOT acknowledge) then they will just take the next customer. I'd say over the past 10 years Apple's support has slipped down a long, dark path. They really did used to be the best, anyone who was a fan before the iPod's popularity will attest to this, I'm sure.
- Rainemaker, on 07/30/2008, -0/+16This is the cellphone equivalent of having your Ferrari's body kit manufactured by Fisher Price.
- kaisang, on 07/30/2008, -2/+18I throw my BlackBerry around like it's a "cheap $20 cell phone" and I don't get cracks...
- SillyRabbits, on 07/30/2008, -1/+17Yep, Apple used to have very high assembly/quality standards. However, as they've moved assembly offshore, the quality over the last few years seems to be pretty much crap (I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, or not). You'd think for the premium on their devices that they would be willing to spend a little more on better manufacturing. I've had more problems with defects on Apple products than I've had with even no-name cheapo electronic devices.
- jazzmann04, on 07/30/2008, -3/+18...and Microsoft's supposed to make software, Sony's supposed to make TV's, HP's supposed to make printers....
I could go on like this all day - h2200161813, on 07/30/2008, -0/+15My friend bought a white one, he was trying to show me how much better it was than my first gen; I pointed out A crack and he nearly cried.
- Pake, on 07/30/2008, -0/+14It's not a problem, it's a feature!
- LittleLORDevil, on 07/30/2008, -2/+14Don't put your phone in your back pocket, I can't tell you how many people I see doing this. People's asses + Phone = Cracking
- lolgamoff, on 07/30/2008, -1/+12No, it happened to mine.
***** pisses me off. my macbook pro was full of problems too. - ruffdeezy, on 07/30/2008, -3/+14Yeah, only 5 days and I got a crack. Actually mine is the bottom right picture.
http://www.ehphone.ca/2008/07/white-iphones-are-cr ... - GIScope, on 07/30/2008, -1/+11yeah... apparently if you use all the iPhone storage capacity it explodes... literally
- lolupissed, on 07/30/2008, -3/+12I carry my iphone in my pocket all times (no case) and bought it the day after it launched. No cracks here I have a 16GB black one.
- scd73, on 07/30/2008, -1/+10they replaced mine no problem but I'm sure mileage varies.
- j0hnk377y, on 07/30/2008, -4/+13Steve Jobs has embedded a hint of his mysterious illness into the iPhone....he's pregnant and these are stretch marks.
- 000dom000, on 07/30/2008, -6/+14iCrack
- whoreable, on 07/30/2008, -5/+13Where is you apple god now?
- Jenadae, on 07/30/2008, -2/+10Dont worry guys its just upgrading.
- dafragsta, on 07/30/2008, -0/+7No, but if you speculate that they might, you'll have a surefire front page submission.
- Gavin, on 07/30/2008, -0/+7I bet the metal backs are loving this..
- coolchu001, on 07/30/2008, -8/+14Apple tried to reduce production cost by using plastic backs, now they are going to spend more money replacing them and making future models with more durable plastic...
- krisple, on 07/30/2008, -3/+9I knew that plastic would be a bad idea. They should of stuck with metal.
- Septimus, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6No, he has done it right. But he seems to think it's new and has to explain it.
- Jrohan, on 07/30/2008, -0/+6Looks to me like the robot inside the iPhone is trying to break out of its shell and take over the world
- gdetore, on 07/30/2008, -5/+11I had a similar problem with the plastic type casing over the 'wood' of the gear shifter in my VW, which had 'upscale' inside touches. A large crack similar to that in the iphone picture just appeared. VW just replaced it. Didn't happen to the replacement. So stuff happens. Apple, just needs to replace, no questions asked. I doubt it's a world-ending all encompassing iphone recall item. What a bunch of blog babies desperate for a story. Take it in and ask for another one. The whole world doesn't need to know.
- RMoore08, on 07/30/2008, -5/+10Engadget doesn't need to make up stories... they have plenty of good articles.
- JoeVerrone, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6When will Apple fanboys learn they shouldn't buy the first of a new design or product? Serves you people right for not learning your lesson from getting screwed on the first iPhones.
- Trax91, on 07/30/2008, -3/+8You are obviously not RTFA.
- pixelsoup, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6Dude, Please.
Don't wear a holster for a phone.
You're not Pancho Villa. - inactive, on 07/30/2008, -2/+7HAHA!
- Wailord, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5Oh, that's fantastic. I'm leaving in about ten minutes to go get my DF'd White 16GB.
- SealandRes1, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5Use a bright white LED light and press it lightly against the case, you might be able to see some then.
- edwartica, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5Its the starbucks syndrome. Remember 15 years ago when they actually cared about quality control? Then they started getting bigger and bigger and bigger, and quality went downhill.
- HumanRecalled, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5This should not be happening under normal use MR.JOBS !!!!!!!! I mean hand to pocket or bag or purse !!
FIX THIS ***** !!!! Mine actually has the bottom piece where it connect to the face plate slivered off -almost looks like the enamel/coating has come off and the plastic can't hold up under normal use!! - bobolito, on 07/30/2008, -0/+5The iPhone is not a waterproof device which means it is not hermetically sealed. Therefore it is natural to have direct airflow inside the device without those cracks. Moisture can come in through MANY other openings the iPhone naturally has, such as the 3.5mm headphone jack, the microphone, the speaker, button edges, data connector, etc.
- scd73, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6Mine had 6 cracks in it straight out of the box. Thankfully switching it out only took 5 minutes at the Apple Store.
- nick2, on 07/30/2008, -1/+5I don't know about you people, but I bought a case for my iPhone...
