- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Personally, I think it all looks good except for a few key things:
1) The scrollbar is hideous. It reminds me of what linux scrollbars look like, and clashes with everything else on OS X looks like.
2) The bottem left buttons are really off center.
3) Podcasts are not organizable in any way but the old way.
4) The vizualizer and equalizer buttons were put in a very inconvinient place.
5) The whole interface looks terribly grey.
Either way, these things say absolute nothing about what Leopard will look like. I mean, hell, look at Garageband. Tiger didn't end up having wood finishing just because Apple tried that there. - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27look, man, I LOVE Apple...but do we really need to have all these seperate digg articles? All of it could have been condensed to iTunes 7.0, and new iPods. All these articles are common sense to anyone who looked on apple.com today, or downloaded the new iTunes.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22i don't like it. my $0.02.
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24Noooooo. Aqua was my favourite thing.
Why God Why ? - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18i really dont like the shift back to the blue music notes ect.
same in iTV, everything had this annoying vivid blue to it.
green and white was purtier - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18in some respects. I do like the glass effect, but overall the OS looks a little too cluttered.
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@andrebrown:
"I was under the impression we already knew what leopard was going to look like from screenshots of the developer copy."
We don't really, since:
1) the WWDC builds aren't supposed to represent the final UI.
2) the screenshot you linked to is a fake. You can tell since it has a copyright earlier than the WWDC build, and the WWDC build interface is closer to Tiger than that (or at least my copy is.) The only way that would be possible would be if Apple removed all those UI differences (read: not bloody likely).
Chances are, the interface will be different, but not drastically so. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yeah, definitely a step back, IMO. I recently switched to OSX so aqua to me is "new." I'm sure the guys that have been using OSX for years now probably could use the change.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I think we kinda noticed when we fired up version 7.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13hankyone
...maybe, but still a hell of a lot better than Windows Media, that's for sure. - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11shawns, you are a ***** idiot. Look up the word 'contradiction' in the dictionary, and tell me how it applies to me.
THERES WAYS OF MODIFYING THE OS BY THIRD PARTY PROGRAMS. How is that a contradiction? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12For "those people without macs" you can still download itunes. www.apple.com/itunes
- punterfpc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I hope you're right because the new iTunes is FUGLY (imo...)
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9animaniac,
Nobody stated "complete speculation as fact", at the end of the article he even asks
"What's your take on the new interface? Is it just a fluke, or a hint at things to come?"
The only thing he says is Aqua is dead in iTunes 7, and it is, because this theme isn't Aqua. You should read the article before complaining. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8iTunes got the new interface first, that was later put in all the iLife 06 apps.
- heresy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24If iTunes is a preview of what is to come, then Vista wins for aesthetics.
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I'm happy the everything-must-be-glossy look is on it's way out... But I can't say I like the new look much more. Seems bland.
- evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think people write about what is important to them. if the diggs count high enough then it's going to hit the front page. i don't think people are just going to change, because someone tells them to stop. people don't know how to simply regulate something like this -- it's too big to control. IMHO.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I went ahead and made a screenshot for you.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/mywhitenoise/iTunes002.jpg - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6andrebrown, some of those icons are custom made.
- NikZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"4) The vizualizer and equalizer buttons were put in a very inconvinient place."
Where exactly are they? I can't even find them! I find the new browse button's location (which I actually thought *was* the visualizer button redesigned) to be counter-intuitive too. The button is bottom right of the window, yet it invokes a feature at the top of the window. - paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I, personally, think that the user interface implemented in iTunes 7 is somewhat reflective of what to expect from Leopard but not the whole story.
My theory is that iTunes 7 in Tiger shows a lower quality version of what to expect in Leopard. The interface is using elements that automatically "scale up" when installed on a Leopard machine but are functional on previous versions of OS X. I can't imagine Apple making such a bland UI the only option especially now as it tries to woo Windows customers. I think Apple will allow the user much more control over the appearance of the UI in future versions of X. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not directly through the OS no you can't, but there are 3rd party apps out there that will do it for you. Search "mac themes" in google and you'll find em.
- Soulscribe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"does apple really expect people to have their music library on the local disk?"
Yes. - mikepx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's LINUX!!!! Why the hell would Apple want to look like an OS that only self important nerds use for bragging rights!? LINUX LOOKS HORRIBLE!
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Runs smooth as silk on my 1.67 GHz G4 in my powerbook with 1 GB

iTunes 7 on Windows - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was already in Quicktime Pro, but if we do see a fullscreen iPod, I bet you're right.
Look at the onscreen alphabet guide in the new iPod interface. - youngcable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4but if you don't have Mac OS X OR Windows... you'll need a screenshot. thanks for the screens
- fliped, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know if this is a stupid question, but can you change the theme in OSX like you can in windows, so if you liked the old style you could simply change the theme to suit your preference?
- paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The idea is the same as Quicktime 7 but the controls are slightly different in appearance.
- NicP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I modded you down because most people dont have their music library only on their ipod. Most people want their music on their ipod and on their computer, this is because the ipod is designed to be synced to an itunes library, this allows you to play all your music from your computer which many people do, but also gives you a backup of your library (who would trust a hard disk thats reading data while you are running not to fail!).
Having said that i do agree that the extra view options should be avaliable for ipods and also for shared libraries on other computers.
Out of interest how come you guys dont keep your libraries on your hard disk too? 3.5" disks are cheap as and 2.5" disks are coming down in price. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Itunes-700-mac.png
Wikipedia is a great resource. (yes, I am too lazy to take a screenshot). - computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are two main theme switches:
*ShapeShifter- this will apply themes to the whole OS, with a set theme file format
*UNO- one theme, independent of ShapeShifter - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Are you in marketing? Or did you just fall for the hype?
- philodox1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hehe, seems like shawnz is an anti-fanboy fanboy.
- tuxracer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you don't want to see these Apple stories on the front page than go into your digg preferences and uncheck a single box. It's a lot more effective than whining.
- CPops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Look at how beautifully the CoverFlow 3D effect is integrated into iTunes 7. This isn't mere eye candy, this is something that actually enhances the user experience. I've only been using it for a few hours and already I can't imagine not having the ability to quickly scroll through my albums to find what I want to play while I work.
iTunes 7 illustrates the general direction Apple is going in with Leopard:
* a more consistent look throughout, and dropping the brushed metal. You can see that iChat in the Leopard preview video has dropped the brushed metal.
* slightly more subdued colors. Vista tries to catch up with Tiger by making everything shiny and with lots of pointless resource hogging effects like transparent windows, but Leopard is going to avoid that temptation and go for a much classier look. It will be tweaked in the months ahead to look even sharper.
I believe that the final MEGATON Jobs will drop in January is a redesigned interface that uses lots of little 3D style effects throughout in a very tasteful way, similar to iTunes 7. - superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3as a system wide GUI interface guideline itunes 7 fails. bad bad bad idea. It seems to me to be apple trying to be apple but not being apple.
- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't like this at all. Aqua was better though not perfect.
- mrfunktastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Uh, guys... people will argue over UI choices until the end of time. Some people will like it, some people won't. No matter what it looks like. The day you all agree that an application/OS/whatever is completely unified and beautiful and perfect, I will be astounded.
I do agree this release is a 'shade' darker than previous releases. Usability studies, and my own personal preferences and observations, suggest that people tend to prefer 'bright, clean and well organized.' spaces to accomplish tasks and spend time. Notice the subtlies of colors on Digg here itself... lots of white, very muted shades, it's quite a nice place to spend time, very useable. I'm not a big fan of the blue color of the header bar, but that's my cup of tea.
iTunes will change again. Chill out. - paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The highlight in the left side menu reminds me of the Vista gloss, and doesn't go with the interface at all.
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If Leopard really is headed in this Web2.0/ProApps dark/gradient direction, Apple will have jumped the shark with OSX.
OSX is beautiful because of how clear and colourful everything is: this new iTunes is a muddy vague mess. Just because Microsoft is catching up w/ Vista doesn't mean OSX should start being different (read: worse) just for the sake of being different.
Lets just hope iTunes remains the odd-duck out on OSX (oweing to it's cross-platformedness), and doesn't become a trend-setter... - tonyarnold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What makes him think the UI will change? An informed guess I would assume. I completely agree, too - Apple needs to counter Aero - replacing or significantly updating it is (in my opinion) definitely on the cards.
- tomzer1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is this a hint of what Leopard will look like? Is this Apple pulling the aesthetic rug out from under Vista? Is this only in iTunes to get it to match well with A/V components in the living room as a media center interface?
Everything is gunmetal grey, black, and blue-grey. Even the Aqua water-drop slider bars are gone. The only color in the interface are the little icons in your library area, and the window controls in the upper corner.
I figured something was up for a change aesthetically when the "Leopard" code-name was chosen, but I didn't think it was dropping most of Aqua.
Aqua color interface elements are gone from iTunes. A leopard _can_ change it's spots after all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't mind the slightly modified interface, but there is more to iTunes 7 then what I see. I have a PC with a 1.8ghz P4 and 1 GB of ram (Kind of weak, but it has always got the job done.) When ever I'm doing anything more than browsing while listening to music, the songs start to skip. What is that???? That never happened before.
Also, is it just me or are the lists in iTunes slow. It is like they are rendered by the CPU and with with thousands of songs, scrolling is anything but smooth.
There, that's my 2 cents. - usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9But NOOOOO, you can't do away with the glossy gui's. Vista is all about a glossy GUI. They're going to make Vista look out of style.
Poor MS, by the time Apple makes a change from the feigning popular and MS copies some of Apple's looks/features, it's already out of style. - Lancer2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Overall I like the change, but I really had a thing for those Aqua scrollbars.
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree totally about the un-desireability of any one "unified" look. OSX, as it's evolved up to tiger, is great because applications can look distinct and unique, while not clashing with each other in the least.
Metal, etc. add needed variety
In car design, a "unified" UI would be called the one-sausage-different-lengths approach: while it's almost universally appreciated (in the car design realm) that what's optimum (and oh-so-difficult) is creating a "design language" that can be diverse in applications, while still still being unmistakably "X". - youngcable, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6for those people without Macs... are there any large screenshots, where we can actually see the new interface?
