- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36I am so incredibly sick of these freakin' rumors. and i love apple.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I love this. Apple hasn't even announced its first cell phone, and we're already digging rumors of a second.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Yeah, it's awesome in a bad way for people to be talking about a second-gen iPhone when the first one's still in rumor phase.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Yeah, no more inconvenient "talking." Just type in your long message on a tiny keyboard!
Forget that, here's what I want:
You can send a VOICE MESSAGE. Select a user, record a message and send it. They download it automatically and listen to it locally whenever. That way you don't have to type with the numeric keypad or a tiny qwerty, and you don't have to misspell swear words or futz around with punctuation. Imagine if you could click a name and say "Hey, I'm going to that bar at 9, call me later, bye." And it's not the same as voicemail because there is a big, ghetto system involved with that and you have to call your own phone and activate ***** on a central server. - StaplesGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Is Apple manufacturing a cell phone? I hadn't noticed the 500 front page stories about it in the last week!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10A second? Where is the first?
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Video chat support = epic.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not just silent communication or antisocial communication. I also regularly use text messages in instances where the communication isn't urgent. Sometimes I just need to send a note to someone that they can read and take note of at their own leisure, instead of interrupting whatever they're doing at the moment to demand their attention for a conversation. I tend to use actual voice calls only for urgent communiques... or when I'm really too lazy to type in a message :p
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5See, us Apple rumor diggers got bored with the first iPhone rumor, so we felt the need to make up another one. I mean, hey... We've been saying that the iPhone was coming for over a year now, but since it STILL hasn't been released yet, we really needed some new product rumors to talk about.
Personally, I can't wait for the 7th generation iPod rumors! The wide-screen iPod rumors are totally passe. I think that I should create a blog with some photoshopped "prototype" pictures of device with built in GPS and PDA functions. That will get me to the front page for sure! :) - matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pardon my french, but Wall Street Analysts don't know sh*t! They probably just stole this from macrumors.com!
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys,
NOBODY who knows what Apple is up to talks to Shaw Wu. He's sitting in an office in New York, and making guesses. This is not news.
-jcr - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah great, cos soooooo many peoiple use iChat!
iPod!
Hey, look if you turn iPod! upside down it still spells iPod!. Amazing! - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this is why i hate all things apple. their fanboys act like when apple introduces it, it's the first time anyone has ever even thought of such a great idea. it's mass amnesia inorder to fee justified that they are cool and cutting edge instead of just sheep being hooked along by slick marketing.
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want Apple fanboys to stop posting crap coments like that.
Is it going to happen? No. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Must Digg Apple stories, must eat brains, must Digg Apple stories
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5hey, there are sometimes when I dont want to talk to the person. I would rather just send a text based messege to them instead.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, isn't that stupid?
- mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2they already have that with sprint. it's exactly what you described. Also, braincast is another interesting solution that's somewhat related (for those of us that like to take notes on the go)
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's called 3g over here. Been around for a few years now. Hasn't really taken off that much.
- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4...And this phone would be different from other phones that you can IM from how?
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ flamingmb
I'm sure you'd still be able to do that, devindotcom is just saying he'd like it if it could ALSO do what he said... i think. - bossywalker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Its' made by Apple and therefore > anything else... at least according to all the fanboys.
- horanghee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Apple is pretty smart, letting the rumor community come up with ideas. For all we know, they just sit back and read the rumor sites until they see a good idea, then patent and produce it.
- reticulate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We've got video calling in Australia on the carrier '3' (UK and Europe have it too), but the quality isn't anything to write home about especially if you're on the move or in a dodgy 3G reception area.
We have the same problem as you yanks - huge distances that don't agree well with 3G's generally stunted 'high speed' coverage. Most of the time you'll end up at 2G GSM again, and you can't push voice+video down that narrow a pipe.
As a concept, awesome. In practice, I haven't seen it done well enough to replace talk yet. I've got a Samsung Z510 on Telstra 3G, and despite the fact it almost wants you video call people, I've never bothered. Call rates can be expensive too. - mkp2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@devindotcom
no no no no no, CLEARLY you don't get it - numeric keyboards are WAY better than what you're suggesting.
/sarcasm - davidestroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"On the other hand, Wu said it's his belief that Apple is fast approaching a resolution to its market strategy and the he remains high that the company's first cell phone will be released in 2007."
"the he remains high". I love it. - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They don't, really. I mean, Apple has done plenty of innovation, but it's never been so much about their innovation... it's been about their delivery.
- graizur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7These news articles are being put together by a PR firm hired by MS to encourage people to wait for a new ipod instead of buying the current one.
While they are waiting MS shows them the Zune and says "Hey this is better then a video ipod"
But it wont work. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Try reading the article; "
Umm.. Why?
Shaw Wu has no more information about Apple's plans than anyone else who doesn't work there. This is a rumor, from a person whose track record of guessing what Apple's up to is no better than chance.
-jcr - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTA:
"He said this newly uncovered handset is likely the company's 'smart phone' and could be branded as "iChat mobile.""
Wasn't there some rumor/leak/fake thing back during summer that had that name? - ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It means the first phone will probably have SMS capabilities, but not iChat compatibility. Try reading the article; it's amazing how *not* ignorant you can make yourself look if you do that before shooting your mouth off.
- stocktube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0regardless whether the rumour is true or not, market is gonna love it ... the related stocks to this rumour such as Broadcom (nasdaq : BRCM) was up by almost 6% yesterday because of this rumour ... hence this present an opportunity to make money from the stocks or options market ... isn't this nice ? to make some money ...
cheers
http://stocktube.blogspot.com - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2THE BILLION DOLLAR QUESTION IS THIS....
Apple has cornered the market on portable mp3 player. Does that mean they can leverage that to gain market shares in other consumer electronic categories? Think to yourself, is it o.k. to carry around an iPod and a motorola razr or do you ***** prefer to carry around everything apple? I just don't see anyone saying i want the iPhone so that i don't have to carry around my iPod. So you'll carry your iPhone to the gym and strap it to your arm? you'll carry your iPhone when you go walking in the woods?
I don't think so. the thinking that apple dominates the portable mp3 player market means they will gain traction in mobile phones is wrong. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1buried as spam
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@devindot
if you actually want to talk, TALK TO THE PERSON! The whole point of sending text messages is to be able to communicate to someone in a an environment where you must be silent, or if you simply do not feel like talking. if you want to send a voice message, JUST MAKE A CALL INSTEAD!! - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9i hope this is true.
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why are you all cheering?
This means the first phone will not have messaging capabilities. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Which ***** moron DIDN'T mark this INACCURATE?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7"These news articles are being put together by a PR firm hired by MS to encourage people to wait for a new ipod instead of buying the current one. While they are waiting MS shows them the Zune and says "Hey this is better then a video ipod"
Your theory is flawed cause the iPod in its current state is not only much better than the Zune, but it's the best interface of any player. - zerock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i want iChat, iPhoto, Safari, Mail.app and iTunes on my cell phone.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3They could revolutionize the cell phone industry like they have done with the music player industry.
- cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Can we at least wait for ONE oft-speculated iPhone to come to light before speculating on a second?
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What I mean is, as long as you are taking a full minute to send a one-way message, why not make it faster and easier by making it no longer a text message? Certainly you can always call, but sometimes that's not an option - you're going into a show, or a movie, who knows. So you send a message - and I'd like that message to be audio.
Also, why can't we set up "away messages" with voice? Like you press a button and record a message like "I'm in a movie right now," or "I'm taking a shower" and until you come back thats what people get when they call you, with the option of leaving a message of course. - arlocita, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I think that's the subtext here. With those tiny cameras in macbook pros, it is obvious that the next step would be creating the first video cell phone. At least one could hope.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2OMG. chatting on the phone? you mean i would be able to IM on a phone.
wake me up when the fanboys stop circle jerking. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This doesn't mean jack squat, it's purely speculation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1video chat over the cell would be a milestone
- geonlab, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1And the world needs another mobile phone
- Joeyp363, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow how gay can they get, an ipod phone?
