- ckohler, on 04/27/2008, -1/+49I want the opposite. I want to be able to stream music and video OFF my iPhone onto nearby TVs and computers. Now that we're carrying our media libraries around with us in our pockets, we should be able to temporarily share it with our friends when we visit them. You can already do this with iTunes on laptops so why not allow us to do it with our iPhones and iPod Touches?
- nace33, on 04/27/2008, -1/+30Finally, something that will make the universal dock make sense for the iPhone!
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+24It's news, when you're on a TECH NEWS WEBSITE. You're not watching the nightly news.
All you people who come here and bitch about the current story and whether or not it's news...We've had enough of you. - OSJunky, on 04/27/2008, -1/+11They've been finding all kinds of nuggets in the SDK. Some other guys found all of the 3G references
http://feeds.computerworld.com/~r/Computerworld/bl ... - shadowsurfr1, on 04/27/2008, -0/+10Two things about that:
1. Apple doesn't solicit the public for those kinds of ideas.
2. If you do submit one, they won't respond and could very well implement the feature you suggested without any acknowledgment whatsoever. - p0tent1al, on 04/27/2008, -1/+10It's news because
1. It's a Sunday, and this is likely to be one of the more interesting stories today believe it or not
2. It's a feature that many would probably use, including myself.
3. Digg is primarily a tech site (or used to be until people like you came around). - Grogtron, on 04/27/2008, -0/+9Forget the dock, I can't believe they hadn't done this simply to drive Air Tunes from the get go.
No more lousy HTML servers for iTunes, about damn time. - inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+9I don't get the appeal of wireless syncing. It's slower than a USB2 connection and it doesn't generate power. I mean, by all means it doesn't hurt to add more and more options, but still, who would really use it? I've got my iPod Touch a very nice dock that sits between my keyboard and display. Even if I didn't the included cable would suffice.
- flap, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5it's about damn time. Now let me wirelessly stream to Aiport Express
- Grogtron, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4Yes, but Remote Buddy sucks because it's basically a web server and is slow and changes states on the Mac. Not good if someone is using it.
Certainly better than some of the others, but not nearly as cool as a native application. - exomni, on 04/27/2008, -1/+5Now that would be awesome. I have my computer hooked up to my stereo system, and I like you run cover-flow as a juke-box system. Being able to control it wirelessly with an iPhone rather than the dinky little Apple remote would absolutely rock.
- Echomote, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4iPhone has bluetooth already.
iPod Touch isn't getting 3G, so no idea why you're asking for bluetooth to bridge internet from that... - chkdg8, on 04/27/2008, -2/+6Actually, this idea has been bouncing around a little longer before the SDK announcement. It takes nothing for them to program this feature into the iPhone. If this concept takes off, what will happen to our little Apple remote? I'll miss it.
- ChzPlz, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3I don't get what the ***** these things are trying to achieve. Can someone fill me in? Is this some stupid viewcount contest or something?
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5It actually has been done before, by a third party. This is the first time it has been hinted that Apple might be developing such an app.
- Protoss, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3I know you are probably being sarcastic, but Apple uses the Bonjour protocol extensively, so they will probably use that.
- HolyChimp, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3He should have said 'useful bluetooth'.
Yes the iPhone has bluetooth but it supports one thing and tha'ts wireless headsets. Why can't I use bluetooth headphones, or send pictures over bluetooth, or use it as a modem?
Pretty sure all of these things could be fixed in firmware, so I'm still hoping :D - scstraus, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2About time, this is such an obvious thing for them to do and it should have been done years ago. And I should be able to pipe my ipod through any apple tv or mac that I want too.
- ricodued, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Why can't it control my iTunes on my computer instead? I'd much rather be able to change song from across the room than stream from my computer, since all of my stuff is already on my iPod
- Atomic1fire, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3I think both ends would be great
Being able to control other products
and send content to them so that you can not only watch the videos on your iphone... But also control which ones you watch with pause, play ect - ocellnuri, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2You can do that with Remote Buddy right now.
http://www.iospirit.com/index.php?mode=view&obj_ty ... - Radan, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I was just about to write a comment about that. Not only would this be really convenient, it's also a great opportunity for Apple to sell additional Apple TVs and Airport Expresses.
- RubberBinder, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2What Planet do you live on? In June the iPhone will have only been out for a year.
- surferjoemaui, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2I also want an IR transmitter for my coffee table with bluetooth to my iphone to control the rest of my a/v gear!
- ChzPlz, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Ditto. I do it now using VNC and an old crappy laptop, but it's not ideal.
- iamanorange, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Simplify media has been able to do this for a while, and it works even if your not in the same network.
Plus, they have a native iphone app! - sdlvx, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3Is it just me, or has anyone failed to notice the irony of using a portable media player to control another media player?
- themacjedi, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2I hope this is true, I wrote an article last year asking for exactly this feature.
http://themacjedi.com/files/2007-09-12-apple-pleas ... - dharcha1, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1true that
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1^ what HolyChimp said
- dharcha1, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1its positively shameful that apple is charging for software updates for the ipod touch.
i like apple, but i dont like that. or the mighty mouse. that thing sucks. - punkcat, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1listening to a friend's excitement over a new song sucks. send them a link and let them hear it on their own time instead of us having to make false enthusiasm for your latest find.
- lump1, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2I'm not sure I understand this right, but the killer app for me would be a fully graphic iTV remote control. The screen on the ipod is big enough to where it could be used to select media to stream over the iTV (media that may reside elsewhere on network drives). This should be much bigger than iTunes. There should be some sort of a "remote desktop" protocol so that a mac with OSX and bluetooth could display its desktop on the iphone. This would be especially useful for the mac mini and the iTV, because if you just want to play music, you shouldn't have to turn on the TV to work the user interface. The iPhone would make the perfect user interface!
- danesis, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1even in free mode you can use it with some limitations.
- primehifi, on 04/27/2008, -2/+3You can do this already with Signal Software. Load it on to your PC or MAC and open Safari on ipod touch or iphone.
Shows album artwork, will play videos on your computer, very nice software. And free!
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/ ... - HolyChimp, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1The iPhone doesn't charge from a USB port without the computer turned on, even if it's a powered USB hub, so you either need to keep your computer on to charge your phone or keep switching the cable between your computer and the power adapter. Wireless syncing would mean I could keep the cable as a charger and let everything sync wirelessly, less messing involved.
- pgouy, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1They already had *ALL* the ideas you fool!
- briansalo, on 04/27/2008, -5/+6But still no wireless syncing? come on...
- ekmather, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1yeah, THATS WHAT IM SAYIN DUDE! furthermore, if a car is enabled with bluetooth, i want to wirelessly stream a song from the iphone to the car's stereo and then when i get a phone call, have it automatically transfer over.
- primehifi, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I consider downloading a program, using it whenever I want, not having an expiry date and not having to pay, ever....... free. If you feel obligated to pay money every time you see the dollar sign, then I have something to show you which you might just be interested in... step this way.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -2/+3cool !
if it is anywhere near as awesome as TouchPad Pro, then I'll totally use it - maxsunset, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2I think you're missing the point, this is saying you could stream content from your computer wirelessly to your iphone, and control it. Headline was misleading.
- Avian00, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2Because Digg users are complete comment snobs and feel that his comment "contributes nothing" to the article. On the other hand, they are quite willing to digg up ASCII pictures of people flipping you off or cartoon characters. Things that are OBVIOUSLY relevant to the article...
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1That would be all fine and good, but Apple tends to avoid redundancy in favor of getting things "right" the first time. I mean, really, the syncing system as it stands works pretty much perfectly. You HAVE to charge your iPod and all your music comes from you Mac/PC, so having one simple cable that fulfills the power needs and allows you to sync all at once is really the best possible way of doing it.
I mean, theoretically you CAN charge your iPod from an outlet with a power converter, but who still uses those? I don't. By extension I have nothing against wireless syncing as an option, but I just don't see the appeal/why it's necessary. I certainly wouldn't have them alter the design of the iPod Classic/similar models to ADD wifi for models just to enable a syncing option. - macslut, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1You can do this now with a jailbroken iPhone and FireFly media server. Hopefully an app will be available from Apple or someone using the SDK.
- digjam, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1OH CMON!! Its just a XML file...thats all .. I could have written something more "newsworthy"
(Now proceed to Digg me down) - herebejames, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1I couldn't say if I think there is weight for this but having any sort of iTunes controller makes a lot of sense, sooner or later Apple will expand on home turf. Sure they'd need to be careful, but anything that decreases the gaps between applications & hardware is in their favor. That whole Mac experience is about those kind of things. Why wouldn't they consider it when almost every major piece of Apple software is designed to dip in and out of each other's resources?
- Mizzike, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1You can figure out how to use it to control your house like they did in Sleuth (2007).
- digjam, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1That thing works! I've used it to control my windows media player numerous times.
- phinn, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Yea this looks cool.
