Apple to Consumers: "Buy now! Great deals on current products!"
What we all hear: "WAIT. DON'T BUY NOW. NEW PRODUCTS COMING REAL SOON" - stevealford, on 07/31/2008, -2/+11This means that Apple will mark down the MSRP of those models within the next month. Asking the retailers to pre-order such a large volume accomplishes two goals: 1) resellers don't have any shortages that the markdown can create due to increased demand and 2) Apple gets premium pre-order price from the retailers BEFORE the markdown.
This is very smart business by Apple, but hopefully any good retailer will see through the ruse and wait until the markdown is announced to make their mass orders so they pay less per device from Apple. They might miss out on a few sales IF there is indeed a shortage after the markdown, but it's worth it to get a better profit margin. There's no need to make a large pre-order right away just in case Apple isn't planning a markdown... otherwise you'll have lots of relatively useless inventory taking up space with no increased demand.
I'd love to play poker with Apple's marketing team... they're as transparent as saran wrap. - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10That's right reseller suckers, stock up on the ***** thats about to be phased out.
- lorductape, on 07/30/2008, -5/+14I work for an apple reseller, and this is the first time I've seen them sending us "advice" like this. That being said, they should send us this advice much, much more often, because we often get screwed when they release new products, being stuck with a bunch of old models.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -1/+8Never buy a new product then, because at some point it will be replaced.
- dizzy113, on 07/30/2008, -2/+9Yeah, the new macbooks and I guess iPods are probably coming out before the end of the year and we know how Apple tries to exhaust the current inventory before release a product refresh
- Giga, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7Why are you in the Apple section?
- Gee1004, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7Microsoft doesn't care. They sell software. As long as Windows run on the Macs, it's good for them. Only Balmer is jealous of the iPhone and iPod.
- inspecality, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6Yeah better for the customer to be screwed.
- doctordbx, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6Sounds like exploitation of the dealer network to me.
- stlcadet11, on 07/30/2008, -13/+18***** you! Two of my friends died waiting to spend their tax returns...
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4"Tax return" refers to a document which can be filed with a government body declaring liability for taxation.
You mean 'rebate' or 'refund'. - thecatcantalk, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5But the old 3rd-gen iPod I've been falling on, dropping, and skateboarding with for 5 years still hasn't died! The battery sucks (as it did when it was new) but that thing has taken a savage beating and still works fine.
- kevdotbadger, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Apart from bacon. Nothing can replace bacon.
- stevealford, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Apple wouldn't give a damn about RETAILER shortages if production rates fell. The only reason they would "advise" retailers like this is if they're trying to clear out their own inventory before the new line launches. Expect Apple to try to clear out their warehouses by shipping more to the retailers, then announce a decrease in MSRP within the next 2-4 weeks.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4Same here. I accidentally somehow threw it when packing up my things from my car the other day. It came down HARD on the cement and was somehow still okay. Those things are built like tanks.
- phoomp, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3This fall the Touch will be a year old. Apple usually updates iPods every 12-18 months, and often before Christmas. Also, the 2.1 iPhone/Touch firmware hints at a new Touch as well. Most likely, we'll see a new Touch in the next 4 months.
- stutimandal, on 07/31/2008, -4/+7Digg this up, we don't have anything better to read these days.
- 3amboo, on 07/31/2008, -2/+5The end is near...
- phoomp, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3This story is about Macs and iPods. It's one of the few that *isn't* about iPhones.
- kingfoot, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4i dont get it
- conchur, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Ugh, that was difficult to wade through. You might want to concentrate on making your sentences easy to read, rather than trying to squeeze in as many obscure words as you can. You're certainly not impressing any intelligent readers with this style of writing, and I would be very surprised if many people bother to read past the first paragraph.
Here are some long words for you: grandiloquent and pretentious. - kevdotbadger, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3I've got the cash ready for the new macbook, just waiting for apple to announce it.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2@nonsequitur668
subtlety goes a long way; also, you don't get laid by putting people to sleep IMHO.
ps - are you reading the Urantia book? hahahaha - AutoTom, on 07/30/2008, -4/+6I guess I'll have to hold off spending my tax return for a few more weeks...
- DeathJux, on 07/31/2008, -1/+3Get out of here with your voice of reason. There is no room for you on Digg!
- mynameistux, on 07/31/2008, -1/+3this is why I love linux, see I can do it too
- phoomp, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1*hopefully* that's what we all hear. Some people will simply hear "SHORTAGES!!1!1!!! Buy, buy, buy!!!"
This appears to be a new tactic by Apple to counter the typical Apple customer's tendency to hold off purchasing until the new model appears, even if that takes a year. - kingfoot, on 07/31/2008, -1/+2my thoughts exactly...
- donna1234, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1iPhone 3G launch in the rear view

- maeon3, on 07/30/2008, -9/+10Definition of "Self Fulfilling Prophecy":
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true.

Apple "strongly suggested" that resellers bring in -- or place immediate lump orders for -- approximately 4 weeks worth of their top selling iPod models. Supplies of the players would start to become extremely limited in the next seven days, the bulletin said. - mrBitch, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1RE: "Microsoft doesn't care. They sell software. As long as Windows run on the Macs, it's good for them."
Hmmm, if Microsoft doesn't care, then why (when MS was contracted by Apple to make an Office Suite for Mac) did MS decide that DOS could use a mouse driven UI interface? (windows 3.1 ran on top of DOS).
If MS doesn't care, why did their updated (and finally working) Windows 95 media player actually contain huge chunks of stolen QuickTime code?
If MS doesn't care, why did MS tell Apple to "Knife the baby"? (ie. kill QT player on Windows).
If MS doesn't care, why did they spend billions on developing the Zune (which has a total of 2.5 million players after over 2 years of selling 2 different gens of Zune... a poor market performer in anyone's books).
If MS doesn't care, why did MS rip off many OSX UI features when MS was developing Vista? - LeeSoong, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1sounds like channel pumping & inventory dumping to me...
If the public knows new macs and iPods are coming out in a few weeks, then they can take the 'wait and see' choice, and buy the new products once they come out...
Why pay top dollar for last year's model ? - Tabris, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1mmyess. Shallow AND pedantic.

- badmigraine, on 07/31/2008, -2/+2Dugg because the post correctly uses its/it's, there/they're/their, and doesn't include mistakes like "definately", "allot of ___", or mix up "affect" and "effect".
- BatmanStan, on 12/16/2008, -0/+0These items are so much in demand, I can't seem to find them on ebay

- AmusedToDeath, on 07/31/2008, -6/+3*****, as usual.
- Twee, on 07/31/2008, -6/+3I just got my iPod touch about a week ago so I certainly hope they aren't releasing a new iPod touch..
- jazzmann04, on 07/30/2008, -5/+1While it may be possible that this points to new products coming out, it could just as easily mean that they anticipate low production rates for awhile and are sending a heads up to retailers in the wake of the fall sales
- jdomins1, on 07/31/2008, -6/+1that makes absolutely no sense...
- tiggerdigger, on 07/31/2008, -7/+2honestly, what is the point of this submission?
- WhoDoneIt, on 07/31/2008, -11/+6Oh *****-off Apple.
- Stryder81, on 07/31/2008, -7/+1I ordered my iphone 3G about a week ago from the AT&T store, I'm still waiting for my call >:I
- Sabotage15, on 07/30/2008, -7/+0I wonder what Microsoft will make to rebuttal Apples new releases.
- nonsequitur668, on 07/31/2008, -9/+2In this post, I'm not going to argue that Apple always gives noncommittal answers to questions. Nor am I going to argue that there are certainly signs that it is becoming increasingly sinful. I'm not going to argue those factors because they're irrelevant. Instead, I will say only that it is devoid of all social conscience. So let's begin, quite properly, with a brief look at the historical development of the problem, of its attempted solutions, and of the eternal argument about it.
Everyone ought to read my award-winning essay, "The Naked Aggression of Apple". In it, I chronicle all of Apple's cop-outs from the censorious to the illiberal and conclude that if I were elected Ruler of the World, my first act of business would be to wake people out of their stupor and call on them to find the inner strength to hold out the prospect of societal peace, prosperity, and a return to sane values and certainties. I would further use my position to inform certain segments of the Earth's population that Apple likes to assuage the hungers of its stooges with servings of fresh scapegoats. Such activity can flourish only in the dark, however. If you drag it into the open, Apple and its provocateurs will run for cover, like cockroaches in a dirty kitchen when the light is turned on suddenly during the night. That's why we must give Apple a rhadamanthine warning not to put political correctness ahead of scientific rigor.
Because the foundation of simplism is terribly flawed, anything based on it will also be terribly flawed. That explains why Apple's disquisitions are so egocentric. In fact, not only are they egocentric but they fail to take into consideration the way that I allege that the best way to overcome misunderstanding, prejudice, and hate is by means of reason, common sense, clear thinking, and goodwill. Apple, in contrast, believes that it can change its grotesque ways. The conclusion to draw from this conflict of views should be obvious: Apple is like a magician who produces a dove in one hand while the other hand is busy trying to respond to this letter with hyperbolic and uncorroborated accusations and assaults on free speech.
If I understand Apple's stratagems correctly, then Apple contends that it does the things it does "for the children". Excuse me, but where exactly did this little factoid come from? It strikes me as amusing that Apple complains about people who do nothing but complain. Well, news flash! It does nothing but complain. Apple's brethren resist seeing that Apple makes a virtue of irremediable fault. They resist seeing such things because to see them, to examine them, to think about them and draw conclusions from them is to build a coalition of stouthearted people devoted to stopping Apple. There are three points I need to make here. First, Apple is up to no good. Second, vandalism, death threats, and slander are typical tactics used by Apple's secret police. And third, it's easy to tell if Apple's lying. If its lips are moving, it's lying.
Autism represents a devious, power-drunk form of divide-and-conquer, so to speak. Apple presents one face to the public, a face that tells people what they want to hear. Then, in private, it devises new schemes to impair the practice of democracy. I am quite certain that Apple's mentality reminds me of the stereotypical bureaucrat who cannot function unless he can "find it in the manual". That's pretty transparent. What's not so transparent is the answer to the following question: How does Apple benefit from defending shrewish incubi against the just expostulations of the public? A clue might be that if we look beyond Apple's delusions of grandeur, we see that it used to be a major proponent of onanism. Nowadays, Apple's putting all of its support behind interventionism. As they say, plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Apple is nothing if not morbid. That's all I have to say. Thank you for reading this comment.
