- teh_spazz, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17So I have to pay for a service to make a service I'm already paying for.....work properly!
Good on you AT&T! - Archaic1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcell
For everyone else who didn't have a clue what this article was about. - therippa, on 02/10/2009, -2/+13How about they find a plan to fix their network where I don't have to buy a microcell to keep in my house?
- therippa, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12How about they just fix their ***** network? I had 4 dropped calls tonight, one during a job interview :-/
- dalesmatrix, on 02/10/2009, -1/+7It seems weird to me that they're gonna charge you to extend their network with your own broadband (that you're paying for). Seems like paying twice for something to me, do I have it wrong? Maybe it's just cause here in Aus we have such crappy quotas for our broadband you have to consider such things?
- RMoore08, on 02/10/2009, -5/+11ITS A TRAP!
- smashingmonkey, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6MicroCell. AKA: Reverse Tethering.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -3/+7http://i39.tinypic.com/30w3zh4.png
- smashingmonkey, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4No, not literally, but it's close. One uses your cellular network to connect your computer to the internet, the other uses your internet connection to connect your cell phone to the cellular network.
- debtman7, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Given that my house is a dead zone, I approve of this. However, charging me for it is a stupid move. I wonder if they'd offer one for free if I threaten to cancel service. My contract is up in July, and given that my phone is completely unusable in my house I plan to switch networks unless they can do something about it without me having to shell out hundreds.
- migitalwarfare, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3if that were true, millions of people would have already died of starvation. that statement sounds like complete *****
- Drizzit, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Verizon is deploying them as well. There is no guarantee of signal inside structures and this is why there's a big push for these. It covers your house and yard pretty well, but will not be covering your block. The side benefit is that it relieves congestion on neighborhood cellular towers when everyone is at home using their cell phones.
It's never been about network planning, just ensuring that you can get your calls indoors a little bit better. - migitalwarfare, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Considering a microcell is already an industry term, I doubt they'll just co opt it for marketing purposes. This is, in reality, going to do nothing to improve your iPhone reception in an AT&T dead zone. All this allows for is the iPhone to recognize and connect to an AT&T microcell deployed at sporting events or other massive events where cell phone use is too much for the existing network. The only other use is to allow a connection to AT&T's terrible idea for a home use cell which they are going to be marketing to the public as a (poor) alternative to a landline in a deadzone.
- Resiroth, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2If you believe in the whole cellphone radiation how do you justify putting a cellphone directly on the side of your head. Even though it doesn't do anything in reality if you're paranoid about radiation it seems like you wouldn't want a cellphone period.
- Ellrick, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2What? The guy is cautiously optimistic about AIDS and Phones. Nothing to see here.
- directrix13, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3Microwaved food is chemically unrecognizable to your body? Right........
- TimeIsTissue, on 02/11/2009, -0/+22 diff people
- migitalwarfare, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1no, you are going to be charged minutes for use of your microcell. this is the problem.
- jakatak, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I held off twice on updating the carrier software. Dang it! I finally did it and am now having dropped call issues. I HAVE NEVER HAD DROPPED CALL ISSUES. FRICKIN' BRILLIANT AT&T.
I will not allow another carrier update. I promise that. - Archaic1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Not unless O2 implements their own Microcell system, or if it's already in place sends up individual icons like these to show when you're connected to one.
- incandescent, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I made a formal complaint to O2 about their appalling 3G coverage in the UK and they told me that they had absolutely no plans to improve it and gave me the option of cancelling my contract or taking a £5 a month discount.
- Zippo, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I've been pleased with Rogers' network so far. I've only had a couple dropped calls (mostly because I live in a basement apartment)... and they've recently deployed 3G in my city.
- Spure, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1I'd rather use it for ammo for my plasma rifle
- Archaic1, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2Read the article: This *is* part of fixing their network
- barkerja, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1wtf?
- Archaic1, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2er, not really...
- ohreilly, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1Sounds about right. o2 are only putting in enough coverage to prevent OFCOM from complaining (their 3G licence dictates that they must get x% coverage within so many years into the licence).
Despite that, my phone (not an overpriced iPhone) appears to pick up O2 3G at home. And I live in a pokey village in the middle of nowhere. - Archaic1, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1You're thinking of a Femtocell.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femtocell - MiDri, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1Emmmm sweet microwavable pizza pockets...
- videocrew, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1No quotas, plus I don't think you have to pay for the minutes while you're using the microcell. So you are getting something out of the deal.
- directrix13, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1Just use Skype or something.
- migitalwarfare, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1so really, it does nothing to patch the dead zones in AT&T's network. Instead, it allows the iPhone to work on their ***** personal cell box that they're going to try to convince people is a better alternative to a landline
- TonyCubed, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2Just wondering if this will help with my O2 iPhone in the UK.
- Metalcard, on 02/10/2009, -3/+3This is interesting news indeed, glad to see it on the front page.
/s - videocrew, on 02/10/2009, -2/+1Not unless O2 brings out a microcell of their own.
- therippa, on 02/10/2009, -2/+1I know what a femtocell is, they are just calling it microcell for marketing purposes I imagine
- frosted, on 02/10/2009, -1/+0Wow, ok so why did it upgrade my iPhone? I have the 1st generation iPhone. NO 3G.. WTF?
- crazysamz, on 02/10/2009, -4/+2I already have a cellphone network optimizer thing, it uses cell towers though, not your internet. If you get 1-3 bars, it raises it to 5 bars within your house. I turned the thing off though, since I heard they cause cancer in children, and it was in my little brothers room. Not taking the risk of cancer for better reception. And yes I realize I sound like a total whackjob but even if it's not true I'm not willin to take the risk, even though I wasted $350 on a cellphone repeater box.
- slyzxx, on 02/10/2009, -3/+1Whoa just ***** Whoa.
- Rustymetal, on 02/10/2009, -3/+1Your not a nut job. Microwaved food is chemically unreconizable to your body, yet millions of ppl eat frozen meals that have been microwaved for 3min+.
Remember the days when microwaves wernt shielded and you had to stand in the other room when it was on. - shoook, on 02/10/2009, -10/+7. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . _________

ATT can suck on a fat one... I suggest they go learn how to build a network from www.verizon.com. (On the reverse side of things - screw Verizon for turning down the iphone deal)
Lets have a moment of silence for the thought of having Verizon network on our iPhones.... - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -8/+1For more info see this page http://www.epiclosers.com/
