- vacuum2440, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Why is everyone complaining so much though? Apple offers a free download of imovie '06 for those people who are buying new macs with iLife '08. Its the best of both worlds...a speedy video editing program with many features and a "fully featured" movie editor for the rest of the jobs!
- skunkworker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Its a freaking nonlinear editor, which for scubbing video together fast is pretty nice.
- znicket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Because this is digg.com. You could shower diggers with freeware, gadgets and extra features... they would still complain about 1. lack of linux operability, 2. battery life, 3. memory capacity and 4. price.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Actually, more than that, I find that this format inspires the editor much better, which I find as more important than its speed. Basically, you can get ideas that wouldn't come to you with time line based editors and their need for pre-planning.
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11How interesting, but iMovie STILL doesn't have a timeline feature. I guess i'll have to buy Final Cut Express :(
420 AUD is a lot of money. - Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They completely rewrote the program from scratch, in order to make it easy for people to do quick editing. It took me the best part of four hours to put together a three-minute clip in the timeline-centric '06. It would have taken about twenty minutes in 08, where I can quickly trim down clips, toss them in the timeline (it doesn't have a scale on the top, but it's still definitely a timeline), and throw some music behind them.
I don't see what all the hate is about. Most people want to trim clips, put them in order, and add in some music behind them and some transitions or titles. iMovie 08 lets you do it really quickly, thanks to the video scrubbing. The timeline is just a different shape without a scale. Sure, if you're looking to do a feature of a specific length than it's not much good to you, but if all you want to do is put the clips in order (90% of people), it'll do that just as well as any traditional timeline. I'd argue easier, actually, since I can generally see more clips in the new metaphor. - pilot3033, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Someone mentioned to me that iLife '08 backups the old version of iMovie.
I'd still use that as the bridge between iMovie for Dummies and FCE. - lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The updates add or improve functionality. It's not like iLife was broken and these updates are patches.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You might want to keep an eye on this:
http://celluloid.sourceforge.net
;) - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The new iMovie is more what iMovie should be, and has very powerful features in it's own right - it's an iMovie from a parallel dimension. The new iMovie also provides an easier migration path from iMovie to FCE if people feel they have the need for more capablities...
I'm sure we'll see plugins return, probably around Leopard. The world will be a better place if all image filters are CoreImage filters, and all video filters are Core Video filters... then you could use them across a wide range of things and not just have plugins for iMovie. - mollerade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm a novice at video editing, but iMovie 08 is by a long shot the easiest application to get started with that i've tried, including Ulead Studio 11. The enhancements to iMovie 08 just announced are welcome, but i realize that Apple's focus for iMovie is beginners. I will outgrow its functionality, and Apple will continue to innovate the product, to make it simpler still to begin making great video. Those of you who are not beginners to the world of video, shouldn't expect Apple to keep your requirements in focus when developing iMovie, its time for you to move on the bigger and better things.
- rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iMovie works in Leopard. Period. Finally!
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree with znicket. Young, immature geeks are never satisfied. Apple can offer a device that solves world hunger and creates global peace, and people would still find things to bitch about. It's easy and fun to rant anonymously. It's also cowardly. In the real world, these nerds can't get laid to save their life, but online they talk big about how their computer is better, blah blah blah.
- zioxide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah you can download iMovie 06 from apple.com if you own iLife 08.. just do that until you can afford FCE. FCE is probably due for an update soon anyways
- planksconstant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it and iDVD also work properly with leopard now. so thats nice.
there were some issues with the apps crashing and not displaying anything in the actual window. so this update is very welcome. - lpmusix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not to mention, even if it was bugs, we can't possibly have a company that fixes software bugs...no...
- tracydanger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The real answer to your question: Because people complain about things. It seems to be innate (I don't know that it really is). If people didn't have complaints and negative things to say, then these threads would only have 2 or 3 comments in them. Who knows, maybe it makes people feel better about themselves. We as humans don't seem to be trained to share positive thoughts when we have them very often. Maybe people think it makes them cooler or smarter. I'm not saying criticism is bad, things would never improve otherwise and iMove needs improvement - I was just answering your question.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not free. It's 80 bucks for the whole iLIfe '08 upgrade. Still, they let you keep or download the old version (which people seemed to like).
- mepawl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple has always stood for the creative, and from what I'm seeing is that their creative suit is just evolving into a YouTube Generation 'thing'. I mean try to cut audio and at a specific time and then insert a sound effect. Try to get important effects like Slow Mo, or Backwards.
One of the most important features missing is the compability with iDVD. - MrDo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1By reading the site, I thought you had to update it manually, but I just ran the software updater and it has the updates.
Now if they only would make mac.com website speeds not suck for people outside the US. - Frost9999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pro skub - http://pbfcomics.com/?cid=0PBF10060BC-Skub.jpg#11
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hence "keep an eye on". The site's being redesigned and will be up this weekend.
- Frost9999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All I want from this version is to be able to import my 3gp videos from my phone. Why did they take that feature out?!?!
- sophiaperennis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The merging of Events in iPhoto seems smoother now, and without problems so far.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Or just use iMovie 06. Unless you're doing fairly high-end video work, it'll suffice. I've heard of TV commercials being done in iMovie (Mom and Pop stores I'd expect, but it's good for more than just throwing crap up on youtube)
- ploke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1imovie still does not work with the mpeg-4 files from my kodak camera.
- stillrealvicz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Try fixing permissions
- zachgc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Has anyone else noticed after this update that the UI in OS X is acting funny? It's hard to explain and maybe it has nothing to do with the update at all, but ever since the install, the Dock magnification doesn't work the way its supposed to (won't magnify until you actually click on an app), the zoom feature won't scroll with the mouse unless the button is held down. Might just be me, but it seemed to happen after rebooting.
- Avian00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Nothing to see here, move along
Stay tuned...

Lame. - JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3OH NOES!!! My ***** FREE video editor sucks!! How could i have known?! WWWAAAHHH!!!!!
/killself - TrevorBelmont, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Well, let's say one with "more features"...
- lochness, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Updates ALREADY... I thought this thing was just released. How could there be problems already. This is Apple not Microsoft ....
- alexology, on 10/10/2007, -12/+9www.thepiratebay.org
- HA5TY, on 10/10/2007, -13/+7Ok, now try updating the iphone to allow 3rd party apps
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1I love all the mac apologists. It's a feature! not a bug.
- mepawl, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Because, Apple promised an update to their iLife Software. What they did with iMovie was nothing short of an an update, it was seriously a disaster. I would've liked to see a fully improved version of iMovie, instead of that crippled piece of software. I mean IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A TIMELINE!
