- adfsj, on 11/15/2007, -1/+15Microsoft does the same thing with service packs. And as upsetting as it may sound, Microsoft releases security updates several years longer than apple is willing to.
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9If you don't mind me asking, what have you had problems with? I have yet to create a standards-compliant design it can't handle. Safari's got waaay better standards support than Firefox (ahem inline-block anyone?) and while I'm not a huge Opera fan, I haven't seen Opera's engine do anything WebKit can't.
- coolbru, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5Wow. Not only have you no regard for those that need consistent colour (Safari is the only browser that supports colour profiles aside from (shiver) Mac IE), your own monitor calibration must be way out.
- allenb, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5Apple are still pretty decent when it comes to supporting older operating systems. My Mac at work runs Panther - which is more than four years old and now superceded by two newer versions of OS X - and I've just downloaded a new security update for that this morning.
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/15/2007, -2/+6Actually, I use Safari multiple times daily. I've found its rendering engine to be _the_ best around -- so I use Safari when building standards-compliant sites, since it's usually quite good at getting everything right. (And it's damn fast.)
- chris9902, on 11/15/2007, -2/+6it also installs Safari so it's a sort of lose-lose.
- coolbru, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Quite. If you start out building a standards-compliant site, it will generally work pretty much flawlessly in FF and Safari, but fall to bits in IE. Safari's CSS3 support is way beyond FF, and basic rendering quality is absolutely unparalleled. What's more, if you report broken stuff to the WebKit bug reporter, it will get fixed pretty quickly, unlike IE. I find Safari is now around 3 times faster than FF, though I still use FF for the wonders of firebug.
You'd better get used to Safari - it's heading for dominance of the mobile world - it's already used by Nokia, Motorola, Apple, and soon Google. - shmatt, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3yeah, right as if anyone EVER made that claim. How lame and immature.
- mlostracco, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4Dugg down for pointing out that you got a reference.
- Bishop256, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4umm like who? is linux forcing you to upgrade?
- mlostracco, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2PSA: That joke is long-over.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3If you're not talking about Windows, then you're comparing apples with oranges.
Forcing users to upgrade one piece of software is bloody annoying, but it's not even on the same scale as forcing them to upgrade a whole OS. - bawpcwpn, on 11/15/2007, -4/+6Bloody Safari keeps crashing on me since the update. Grr.
- newbill123, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2As popular as IE is, good practices say to develop for standards first. Releases of IE aren't standards; if they break in the next release of IE, Microsoft is under no obligation to fix them and certainly may not fix them in a timely manner.
This became really clear with IE7's debut and suddenly there were weeks and weeks of scrambling to move html originally developed in IE6 to now support IE7. Now that there are three reasonably standards compliant browsers, it just makes sense to develop for a higher standard and fork a quirky branch for IE when it's updates require. - tvc15, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Point Safaris Style Sheet (under the Advanced preference pane) to Caminos ad_blocking.css in the app package. You will get the same ad blocking behavior.
- objc, on 11/15/2007, -2/+4Unless of course they build websites for a living... or just hate crappy ports.
http://webkit.org/blog/41/introducing-the-web-insp ... - superwick, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2If more sites aren't built to be "standards compliant", then IE will never comply with the standards fully.
- MacParrot, on 11/15/2007, -2/+4but, but, but, this comment shows you have no imagination. If you're going to be an idiot troll, at least try to do it with style.
- Billions, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2You may not see it on your screen, but your computer repeated the word 'but' three times and it's making you look stupid on the internet. FYI.
- shmatt, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1If the site loads in other browsers, it isn't Safari's fault. it's the lameasses who created the site
- Throlkim, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, Safari still doesn't have proper ad blocking. So I use Camino.
I actually didn't notice Digg had adverts for a good few months. >.> - blofeld9999, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1I'm glad Apple released this. Safari 3 is most welcome. Much better Find functionality, and ***** MySpace pages no longer beach ball my MacBook Pro. Other sites that didn't work on Safari 2 now work. Hopefully I can reach a day where I no longer need two browsers in my dock.
- bulkhater, on 11/15/2007, -2/+3So, once you have a standards compliant site, how much time do you spend tweaking it for IE and Firefox?
- shmatt, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1The PithHelmet plug-in works decently.
- doggi, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1Same here, updated a MBP 10.4.10 through the auto update and I couldn't start up anymore. After thinking a bit, I thought it should be possible to boot with the install disc and run the update again through the combo installer. It took me some time to figure out how to do it, but it worked. So I didn't have to install everything again. If you are interested in the exact procedure, drop me a line.
- harrybeave, on 11/16/2007, -0/+0I am wrong on all counts, damn! The installer asks if Bonjour be installed and Safari is still a beta, I will never comment again ...
- bulkhater, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1 Bishop256,
Well, if your distro has discontinued security updates for your version of that flavor, then yes.
Of course in Linux, this process frequently amounts to the command line:
apt-get update &&apt-get dist-upgrade
and hitting "y" and "n" for an hour or so.
Unless of course you're an Ubuntu user who has a Linksys Wireless card, in which case you then get to spend three hours trying to get your wireless card working again. - coolbru, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1Seems like the Flash plugin is completely screwed.
- JMan28, on 11/15/2007, -0/+0Darn it. I just did all my patches last night. One more...
- Hiedran, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1Digg has adverts?
- moltek, on 11/16/2007, -1/+1hmm.. to update or not to update that is the question...
- bulkhater, on 11/15/2007, -2/+1Wait, are you claiming you had to reinstall the OS in your Parallels images, or just that you had to reinstall Parallels?
- Topher06, on 11/15/2007, -2/+1If the security updates reaches 10.4.50, can we just round up to 10.5?
- valkyries, on 11/15/2007, -7/+5this was already on the front page...
- edebolt, on 11/15/2007, -5/+3heads up. I tried updating my 10.4.10 on my MBP and it hosed it up good and I had to reinstall 10.4.5. Lost hours of time. Ouch and had to reinstall all my Parallels stuff. Hopefully this does not happen to many other people.
- TheKrillr, on 11/15/2007, -6/+3It counts if I'm talking about companies who create OSes that != Apple/Microsoft.
Sheesh. - bulkhater, on 11/15/2007, -4/+1The problem is, being "standards complaint" is a pretty useless feature when the major browsers aren't. In the real world, site designs need to work in IE, possibly Firefox. IF the result HAPPENS to be standards compliant than Opera and Safari are covered as well, but most small shops don't do anything more than cursory testing in Safari and Opera, if that.
- harrybeave, on 11/15/2007, -7/+2Looks like windows version is also out of beta, but it will install Bonjour for some reason, which is very annoying.
- TheKrillr, on 11/15/2007, -10/+4It's a good thing I didn't mention Microsoft then isn't it :-)
- richthomas, on 11/15/2007, -7/+0dugg for Spinal Tap reference
- SSUK, on 11/15/2007, -10/+3Okay then, enjoy your dark grays coming out in pink. Moron.
- TheKrillr, on 11/15/2007, -11/+3and his mom's face. don't forget her's.
- gomvents, on 11/15/2007, -12/+4What is the most popular Mac browser now? As a web designer I HATE Safari - not much works on it flawlessly...
- Jonjonr6, on 11/15/2007, -9/+0All this "if you're building a standards-compliant site" BS doesn't help when I need to access a non-standards complaint site, and Safari won't work.
I hate Safari - AdonalFoyle, on 11/15/2007, -21/+10People still use Safari? Not even the hardcore Apple fans use Safari.
- hiro, on 11/15/2007, -20/+5Lol, as if anyone still uses Safari!
- TheKrillr, on 11/15/2007, -21/+5Interesting that they would continue to update 10.4, when instead they could force people who want improvements to upgrade to Leopard. Goes to show Apple really does care about their users, as opposed to some companies I know of who force users to upgrade.
Yay for Apple. - mjbradvica, on 11/15/2007, -23/+2But, but, but, i thought macs were perfect.

What is Digg?
