- allaboutdatiki, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37Why am I always stuck in the dreaded "buy now or wait" cycle? I needed that subnotebook a month ago ...
- greevar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28Osmosis?
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18so now speed bumps are "yawners"? do people really expect massive redesigns every year or so? is there anything wrong with the visual design of the current MacBook? we know the current iMacs have (mostly) the same outside look since it was powered with a G5, but the innards have changed dramatically.
the sub-notebook rumors have been bouncing around for years. either Apple is never quite ready to release it (due to hardware or market) or it's just tons of wishful thinking. give it a few weeks and people will say the tablet is coming again.
we know the iPhone was in the labs for a few years and that the individual parts were put in test beds to keep everything under wraps. that's probably been the source of the tablet-Mac rumors (touch screen OS X device etc). AppleInsider has had some good info in the past, but this seems like this is kind of filler. - thegreyfox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18No optical disc drive
So anyone want to tell how OS X 10.6 will be installed? - etandrib, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12No. That was ThinkSecret… hahah. That guy just makes up stuff now.
- adhamsomantrie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10still waiting for powerbook 12" successor...
- imnojezus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You pretty much just need to jump in at some point and be happy with what you get. Apple is an innovative company, so there is always going to be something new and better within the year (or rumors of something new). If you keep waiting for what's next, it's all you're ever going to do.
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Wasn't it also Appleinsider that also said Touch Screen iPod last Tuesday?!
- IslandSaint, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13I'm excited to see the new iMac design. Still waiting on the iPod touch screen... I just want an iPhone without the phone!
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Network installer? Pre-installs? USB-based storage devices?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -11/+18....but with an inferior OS
- phlogiston99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+613" ultrapotable? Back in my days 13" was full size laptop. And gas was a nickel a galon. And I had to go to school on foot, uphill, both ways, in the snow, without shoes, in 100 degrees heat.
I love my 12" iBook. I wish it was a convertible tablet 12" iBook. - slickricks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6If Sony "looked out" for anything, the PS3 wouldn't be eating ***** right now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8target disk mode, netboot, ARD or external drive
-- dont forget that firewire can carry power; the drive would be about the size (literally) of a CD case
-- also, the Intels can now boot from a usb drive if the formatting is right - jonjon602, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12yay! cant wait too get my hands on it. When apple stopped production of the 12 inch power book line, it was only a matter of time before they came back.
- r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"You pretty much just need to jump in at some point and be happy with what you get."
The same goes for ANY technology company, if you go with an attitude of there'll be something better in a couple of months you will NEVER own anything. If you buy it now you will nearly ALWAYS be disappointed as technology has a tendancy to advance. - hiro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It doesn't sound much different from the existing Macbook, apart from the screen technology which, if it works, will move onto the rest of the range anyway.
Just make a Pro version of the existing 13" Macbook Apple, I just want a bit more speed and a decent graphics card - Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"I needed that subnotebook a month ago"
Time Machine! - mgajda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not a yawner!
The MagSafe latches seem great improvement for any highly mobile notebook user.
My IBM/Lenovo plastic latches were always the first thing to break.
And under 3lbs. system is more than a feature - it is pleasure to move with. - pcharles23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2man this ultra portable will be the cats meow.. and i don't miss the optical drive.. who needs one of those anyways... it may get something 7 or 8 hours of battery life....
i am thinking it will come with a usb external dvd .... or else how would you re-load the os? unless they will have like a back up hidden 5 gb partition with the os image on it... who knows.. - EmmEff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2External CD/DVD drive booted over USB 2.0. Same thing Sony, IBM and others do/have done with their subnotebooks.

I think what we'd be worried about is an archive-and-install or a clean install -- hard to do over a WAN unless you have aggregated ethernet and some mad skills - mos6507, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't consider 13" ultraportable anymore when you have things like the Fujitsu P-1610 convertible tablet with an 8.9" LCD.
- Kugo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Will it be as much of a yawner as this post? That's difficult, innit?
- Scaryclouds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@imnojezus
I would generally agree with you, but this is a major redesign, not just a spec increase. I'm glad I wasn't able to afford a Macbook Pro a couple months ago because I know I would be kicking myself when the new Macbook Pro's come out, it appears, next week (if not very soon). - supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The article is from Feb 2006. I have a macbook 13" with the magnetic power cord and magnetic latches to close it firmly and it easily prys open. This is my 3rd notebook, 1st Apple and I must say this is the best portable PC I've ever used. Well designed.
Old article though. Funny that a year plus old article still sounds like innovation when compared to the rest of the PC making world. Apple is doing a great job on their notebooks. Cant wait for the LED screens and multi-touch screens. - cranium, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm gonna have to pass. The 13" iBook has a class defect that causes it to go dark shortly after startup once the machine is roughly one year old. Yet, Apple has not done a single thing other than spin & deny. Being the proud owner of a $1500 paperweight doesn't appeal to me, and I've seen no indication that Apple has changed its ways. ***** 'em.
- hellotyler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Appleinsider doesn't know jack...
- SuitCase874, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Sure, speed bumps are "yawners". Apple's Macs have been stagnating in terms of industrial design in recent years, which is both unusual for them and somewhat upsetting when I'm sure they could pursue all sorts of innovative ideas. Speed bumps are par for the course, but what we should be seeing are bright new ideas like we used to - stuff like the keyboard backlight, or new manufacturing materials, or bleeding-edge technologies like 802.11b. They haven't done anything interesting like that in a while. I think only the proposed subMacBook has the opportunity to do something exciting, now - Apple seem fine using 2001 and 2003-era designs for their major lines of laptops.
The MacBook in particular is a "yawner" as the redesign was barely anything more than a slight reformulation of the iBook, and maintained some of its problems. It's pretty heavy and while they made it thinner, it's bulky around the edges and not particularly attractive (have you noticed how almost all the other manufacturers have a white iBook-alike laptop now?) - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4OSX86 isn't that bad actually. I've been able to run it on a tablet and a few laptops with few crashes.
- unique172, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Updated over the internet, like everything else these days.
- zman14321, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2I figured out where alot of digg posts come from. Someone like me has a bunch of linux/apple addons to their personal google page. They see a cool article and submit it to digg. This was on there about one hour ago :)
- ProtoZoa, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1This is going to be great for the college bound students!
- themacguy12, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3covering more of the market!
- damacman, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3Look out Sony! Here comes the MacBook ultra portable sub-notebook.
- EntropyFan, on 10/11/2007, -38/+11Your stuck because you have chosen Apple to be the one and only provider for your (computer) needs.
You, as a consequence, will do it the way Apple tells you to do it, or you simply won't do it at all.
Had you chosen another provider of technology, you would have been happily owning what you wanted a long time ago.
What is Digg?
