Apple: turn-by-turn GPS coming to iPhone; but copy/paste...
engadget.com — There's been a lot of random misinformation about the iPhone 3G floating around out there, like David Pogue's baffling comment that the device's GPS antenna is "too small" to support turn-by-turn directions, and Apple's iPod and iPhone marketing head Greg Joswiak recently sat down with AppScout to clear up some of the confusion.

- lradatz, on 07/15/2008, -6/+40Glad to see it will be able to do turn-by-turn GPS, but I wish copy/paste was a priority for Apple.
- ruddy, on 07/15/2008, -16/+90it took them 20 years to right click, i don't think you're getting copy/paste any time soon.
- rolf, on 07/15/2008, -10/+19They had right click since forever (remember using it in the mid 90s under OS 7.5.x), but it just wasn't standard for a Mac to come with a two button mouse.
Still, if you sprang for a 2 button mouse, you had the capability. Or hit a button while pressing the mouse button to simulate the right button click (CTRL? been a long time). - zeeky, on 07/15/2008, -2/+4I remember back when you had to hold down Control to right click.
- Tenoq, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2@ rolf -
I seem to remember it being the Option key, but that changed later (OS9).

- Diggyan, on 07/15/2008, -7/+11But copy/paste is soooo hard to implement in phones these days. Just like MMS, flash support, turning off auto-complete, and the other insanely challenging stuff that no has ever done before.
- blcarmadillo, on 07/16/2008, -6/+1No it's not: http://www.vimeo.com/266383
- illegalcortex, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7whoooooosh!
- elmetald00d, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1flash support? show me a good device with it.
please. a good device.
- johnpaul191, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3i find the copy+paste thing baffling. i use it constantly on my Treo, but i also use it on my computers. maybe some people don't? there is no possible financial/bandwidth incentive to Apple or AT&T to keep that out.
the only thing i can figure out is that there is some glitch to keep it from being universal. if you can not copy+paste to and from every app on the phone (safari, ical, address book, sms etc) then it's kind of useless. if that idea is right or wrong, it is obviously not a priority if they did not work it out in the last 18 months.- znicket, on 07/16/2008, -2/+8"A recent Nielsen survey said that people wanted the following in their phones: Bigger memory, bigger screens, longer batterylife and keyboards. You know what, it's called a laptop!" - John C. Dvorak.
I don´t usually agree with Dvorak but in this case I think he has a point.
- znicket, on 07/16/2008, -2/+8"A recent Nielsen survey said that people wanted the following in their phones: Bigger memory, bigger screens, longer batterylife and keyboards. You know what, it's called a laptop!" - John C. Dvorak.
- znicket, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3I humbly ask for some clarification. I have an iPod Touch and I simply cannot figure out why people seem so intent on having cut&paste. In what instance would you _actually_ use this feature so that it becomes so important?
I'm not being snarky here... genuinely want to know.- zeeky, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7you want to copy the contents of a text message to safari. or maybe you want to mail a snippet of a web page to someone. maybe you want to copy part of an email into your notes. with the SDK out, someone is bound to make an office clone. yeah, try using Word without copy and paste.
- znicket, on 07/15/2008, -6/+3zeeky - but these are hardly _necessary_ features. Maybe nice to have but not essential to the portable experience. Instead of emailing a snippet of a webpage, you simply send the link. As the notes are non-exportable there is no requirement to store anything in there that you can easily store in the email program. You are right though that if an office suite would be made for iPhone Cut and Paste would be essential. But we are simply not there yet.
It seems to me that people are trying to force this device to become more of a laptop in functionality instead of embracing the simplicity and portability. - zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6i love my iphone to pieces but how can you explain the lack of MMS? this is so basic and its been with us since the beginning of camera phones. just like copy/paste has been with us from the beginning and i want it till the end. so what if my gf sends me a naked pic? gotta go to viewmymessage.com. and i have to WRITE DOWN the code and entry password every time on a piece of freaking paper. copy/paste would be a bit better. there are times when you just need it. sure i could just send a link, and then say scroll down and click on the second tab because it uses AJAX and you can't link directly to the content in the second tab.
//my worst rant yet - znicket, on 07/16/2008, -4/+4The MMS is a case in point where Apple is deliberately pushing aside outdated technology. MMS sends small crappy pictures for a cost. Near all phones can now receive emails. Ergo, we send pictures via email now. Better quality and free. Just get your gf an iPhone and problem is solved.. :)
I get what you say about AJAX websites - perhaps you are right there that Cut/paste would be good there but it seems to be so insignificantly few times where you truly need this. There are cases where I do copy paste text into discussion groups for my friends but I do that on a laptop where I have full access and a speedy keyboard. Word Processing, editing and exchanging information on a large scale, is something I choose not to do on a portable small device.
Maybe we all need to get adjusted to different ways of operating - small portable devices are not laptops and we shouldn´t treat them as such. They are great for browsing, sending short emails or funny pictures - why try to force them to be anything else? - zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6because the technology is there and we need to take advantage of it. i don't want stupid limitations. im glad apple put that send as mail button in notes and safari, but it's NOT copy/paste.
and hey wait a minute, if i'm still using MMS, how can it possibly be outdated? i freaking hate MMS btw. i wish all phones did email. - znicket, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3People are still using VHS players. Are companies obliged to support VHS for infinity just because the technology is there? Even though something better is available?
- zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2touché
- danomagnum, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2It wouldn't make sense to stop supporting VHS when it was still what most people had though, now would it?
- incandescent, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Sounds to me like you're in denial znicket. Why not just acknowledge that Apple have arbitrarily decided not to provide some really basic functionality on the iPhone and move on instead of trying to justify the unjustifiable?
- zeeky, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7you want to copy the contents of a text message to safari. or maybe you want to mail a snippet of a web page to someone. maybe you want to copy part of an email into your notes. with the SDK out, someone is bound to make an office clone. yeah, try using Word without copy and paste.
- SolituSneiku, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1it's simple to do a copy paste technique....you glide your finger to select the text....then hold down on the text till it blinks...that would copy....then to paste you hold finger down on desired area till it pastes....can't be that hard
- ruddy, on 07/15/2008, -16/+90it took them 20 years to right click, i don't think you're getting copy/paste any time soon.
- nju0843, on 07/15/2008, -8/+129They must think copy/paste will eat up way too much battery life...
- subliminalurge, on 07/15/2008, -4/+14Then they better get rid of that damn phone app, too! I swear, I use that thing for a couple hours and I really notice a difference on the battery meter!
- clak, on 07/15/2008, -1/+21I love how the Anti-Apple people said Steve Jobs was lying about battery issues when he explained why Apple decided not to go with 3G. Now that the 3G phones are out, the first thing the Anti-Apple people complain about is... you guessed it, BATTERY LIFE!
I've been using a battery sleeve from Mophie for my first Gen iPhone. It gives me 8 extra hours of talk time, and up to 250 hours of standby time, and it's a lot more convenience than a regular battery because all I have to do is slip it on.
http://www.mophie.com/collections/batteries
I can't wait for Mophie to make a version for the 3G iPhone. Anyway, I think Apple will have copy & paste once iWork gets released on the iPhone, because then you will have a word processing app (Pages) that can utilize it to great affect. Yes, it would be nice to have copy & paste for Safari and E-mail, but it isn't so crippled that you want to break the phone and buy a Windows Mobile phone.- johnpaul191, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3well, people also said the AT&T 3G network was almost non-existent. It's possible the iPhone tries to find 3G (over EDGE) and that *really* kills the battery? I had an old cellphone that would lose a full charge in 3 or 4 hours when i was in one location working. it was basically a building's basement. Maybe that's part of the reason you can just kill the 3G option.
- Lancelot9201, on 07/15/2008, -6/+1They weren't worried about battery life, more like they were worried that cut & paste would use to any processor cycles & cause overall slow downs..
- zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3thats like the same thing since more processor cycles = more drain on battery
- krische, on 07/15/2008, -22/+78buried as inaccurate. There is absolutely no confirmation of turn-by-turn GPS coming to the iPhone. Just that there are complications surrounding the issue.
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7But nothing along the lines of Apple stifling it on purpose either.
- tidu, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6"Oscar Meyer announces new 7ft long hot dog product."
Hey, they never denied it. - zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2i believe that google's map data can not be used to provide turn by turn guidance. however, if someone were to make a dedicated program and access the map data somehow different, i think that would not go against the license agreement.
- tidu, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6"Oscar Meyer announces new 7ft long hot dog product."
- DooM, on 07/15/2008, -2/+11Telenav confirmed earlier:
http://gizmodo.com/5024018/telenav-confirms-iphone ... - Lancelot9201, on 07/15/2008, -4/+1I believe the reason that they didn't include turn by turn or other processor / memory intensive addons is because the processor can't handle it comfortably.. Apple turned a blind eye to some important software functions because they didn't want the word getting out that iPhone is under powered..
- Tenoq, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Or, because like every other cell phone that has tried to do this, it kills battery life. Combine a big screen with a GPS unit, speaker and turn-by-turn directions, and you've got *****-all battery life out of a tiny cell phone battery.
- zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7thats like.. the worst conspiracy theory ever
- colincornaby, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6It has been confirmed. Telenav has already shown off the software and said they are releasing it to the app store in the very near future.
Your comment = buried for not reading TFA.
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7But nothing along the lines of Apple stifling it on purpose either.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/15/2008, -9/+17Really, it would not be so hard. It could probably be done in two seconds. It's simple:
Just like when you need to move the little blinking cursor for typing, you hold down your finger and the little magnifying glass shows up so you can specifically select where you want it. But this time, you also put *another* finger on the other side, putting the text between your two fingers until you have properly selected the text you want to copy. After you get it right, the little menu pops up, giving you a few options, one including "copy". Then, to paste, simply hold down your finger on a blank space in a text box wherever you feel the need.- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -11/+4That all is harder than you think. And what if you want to copy backwards?
- samssf, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Fail
- 48snickers, on 07/16/2008, -1/+0That's a good solution for copying small snippets of text.
Now what if you want to copy a whole page of text? - djcraze, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3How the hell could that be implemented in "Two seconds"!?
- omarqaz7, on 07/16/2008, -1/+5That's just the user interface problems... There are technical issues as well.
For example, on the Mac copy and paste is implemented by having a pasteboard server running at all times. The iPhone only has about 64 MB of RAM so every byte is important. Not to mention that there needs to be a way to store data in multiple formats, which consumes a whole lot of memory especially when you're copying things like images or video. And solutions like lazy copying can't really be implemented since there are no background processes.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but considering all the technical and UI challenges it's ignorant to say that it could be implemented in "two seconds". Yes, systems like Windows Mobile have implemented copy and paste but Apple has always been known for having a great overall user experience instead of just adding every feature they can think of. This is why they never sold an iPhone 3G with 3 hours of battery life, and this is why they'll wait until they think it's necessary to implement copy and paste.- chongli, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2The original Mac had copy and paste working with only 128K of RAM. I highly doubt that this is a memory issue.
- omarqaz7, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1The iPhone is doing a lot more than the original mac.
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -11/+4That all is harder than you think. And what if you want to copy backwards?
- r55741, on 07/15/2008, -13/+7my att tilt has garmin mobile xt, it works great.
:)- cmgarcia, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2Yeah I ran that on my old Tilt, killed the battery so fast that it really wasn't worth it. My iPhone's GPS doesn't eat as much battery. So, suck it.
- EtherGnat, on 07/15/2008, -3/+2My car--the only place I ever need a GPS (your mileage may vary)--has a convenient power outlet, so no I will not suck it.
- Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2You must have had a very old Tilt indeed. Last trip I got slightly over five hours off a charge using GPS and audio turn-by-turn.
So yes I will suck it, but I'm only being courteous. - cmgarcia, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Haha, ok dugg for courtesy and maybe my Tilt just sucked. I mean, good phone, but using GPS on my Tilt destroyed the battery within 2 hours of driving. Too bad I couldn't plug it in like the douche above me, I only have one cig lighter and it's reserved for cigs.
- Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -7/+3Hey, my AT&T Tilt has Garmin Mobile on it and it works great too. _to here_ And I'm posting this from it right now, made easy because of its real keyboard. Plus, now watch this...I'm going to cut and paste from here:
Cool huh? And only $50 less than the iPhone!- d1a1s1, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4WOW! Im gonna sell my iPhone and get a Tilt...like right now!!

- skyshock1, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Have Tom Tom 6.02, Garmin mobile XT, Nokia Maps, and Google Maps on my Nokia N95.
They all rock.
- cmgarcia, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2Yeah I ran that on my old Tilt, killed the battery so fast that it really wasn't worth it. My iPhone's GPS doesn't eat as much battery. So, suck it.
- clak, on 07/15/2008, -6/+57I think Apple programmers and engineers had their hands full preparing the iPhone for third party software, what with the Cocoa Touch APIs, The App Store and integration with Xcode development tools. You also have to consider that they had to integrate 3G networking and GPS routing into the mix, to say nothing of MobileMe and getting the iPhone to a battery spec that outclassed all other 3G phones on the market.
I know people like to think software companies have a wand that they can wave and magically implement features, but it doesn't work that way. You also have to consider the monetary reasons why Apple would focus on The App Store, and MobileMe instead of cut & paste. The App Store and MobileMe will generate REVENUE. Yes, copy & paste will make a few people happy, but it's not going to immediately put money in Apple's pocket.
I'm not saying copy & paste isn't an important feature, but you ask any potential NON-GEEK customer about the features they want from the iPhone, and I'm pretty sure copy & paste will be low on their list too.- pmellyn, on 07/15/2008, -13/+7Are you serious? I have been a programmer for years, and I can tell you that integrating something as simple as copy and paste is so ***** easy that any decent programmer could do it in no time.
I have a feeling they aren't adding copy/paste just because it's being talked about so much. Free publicity ;)- clak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7They're doing this for publicity, like they aren't getting enough already?
Whatever, man, copy & paste is useful for transferring data from a web browser to say an url locator field and perhaps to transfer data in e-mails, but outside of that, what good is it, when Apple hasn't even officially released a word processing app yet for the iPhone?
Lest we forget that word processing is where copy & paste is primarily needed. And you're forgetting the problems copy & paste would make to Apple current UI. How do you implement it exactly on a multi-touch device? Does copy and paste work with swipes. Well, swipes are already implemented for scrolling. Does copy & paste work by holding down your finger in a browser page? Then how does OS X distinguish this from double-tap enlarging or someone with really heavy fingers?
There's a bunch of technical issues that could turn this into a mess.
- clak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7They're doing this for publicity, like they aren't getting enough already?
- subliminalurge, on 07/15/2008, -4/+13Um, dude, you do know that this is Digg, right? Around here the idea of a company actually wanting to make money is considered evil. (Although I'm still trying to figure out what exactly everyone thinks companies actually exist for....)
- Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -8/+3Why does Apple make phone development look so hard?
HTC and LG make lovely phones, without the need for all the histrionics and impassioned defenses as to why the most basic of features were left off.- EtherGnat, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11You mean like HTC refusing to provide 3D accelerated drivers for phones which were advertised as having 3D acceleration?
There are plenty of issues with the iPhone (I know because I like to point them out) but don't make it like other developers are so totally on top of things. - Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2It's AT&T that did not provide the video drivers in their versions of the phones, not HTC. Call 888-617-1113 and ask them.
- EtherGnat, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11You mean like HTC refusing to provide 3D accelerated drivers for phones which were advertised as having 3D acceleration?
- anshuman, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1I cant agree with you more. bravo . I am now going to forward this comment to all iphone haters in my contact and let them think about it... so let me cut & paste this........

- Ryan2845, on 07/15/2008, -6/+29Couldn't they have put some intern in charge of copy and paste or something?
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -16/+11If you want a mobile OS that has interns in charge of some of the most important features, then it sounds like Windows Mobile is for you.
- Ryan2845, on 07/15/2008, -5/+8so you'd rather just not have it, ok... it's copy and paste for god sakes, it's not rocket science
- Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -6/+13Windows Mobile cuts and pastes just fine, so interns 1...
- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Shouldn't that be if you want a mature OS that is proven in business land that doesn't have stupid restrictions on what you can and can't do with it then get Windows Mobile?
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -16/+11If you want a mobile OS that has interns in charge of some of the most important features, then it sounds like Windows Mobile is for you.
- jabberwolf, on 07/15/2008, -12/+4More propaganda...
No turn by turn offered or sign that anyone is planning for it!
And cut and paste didnt make the cut? Is it a difficult application? REALLY???
And that it's not important even though every ***** person has been clamoring for it?
There is a reason, and it's simply for control. Why can't Apple be up fron an honest about anything?!
BTW - Digg supporting Apple propaganda "22 hr 35 min ago" with only 100 diggs.- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2"No turn by turn offered or sign that anyone is planning for it!"
Except for TomTom, specifically mentioned in the article.
"And cut and paste didnt make the cut? Is it a difficult application? REALLY???"
Write an app yourself that does it well and perhaps Apple will copy you. Good luck.- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1So you are saying writing copy and paste is 'too hard' for Apple?
I thought they were supposed to be good?
- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1So you are saying writing copy and paste is 'too hard' for Apple?
- clak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Why would this be about control? Apple is afraid you're going to copy & paste? Why exactly? I'm not saying you are wrong, but it would be interesting to see you back up this tin hat claim with an actual argument that doesn't appear to be a Fanboy rant.
- kelly, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1*anti fanboy rant
- clak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Actually, I was assuming he's a Microsoft Fanboy, but since no one will admit they exist *cough*Xbox/Zune/Vista lovers*cough* then why should I risk getting dugg down because of it?
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2"No turn by turn offered or sign that anyone is planning for it!"
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -8/+8Nothing says developers cannot add cut and paste into their own applications.
The fact that none has done so speaks as to the ease of doing this.- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11Yeah why don't they write their own input handling routines while they are at it, or maybe their own complete OS for the iPhone hardware! FFS.
The OS libraries are supposed to handle things like that. When writing an app you shouldn't have to write your own copy and paste or text input or screen display routines - it's the point of the OS. Stop apologising for Apple.- corygreenwell, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1But isn't that the very point of Apple opening the iPhone up...to allow 3rd parties to do what it can't/hasn't done. Since Background apps still aren't possible, this does very little to solve the very real problem of no cut/paste, except within individual apps, but a developer could perhaps up the ante by creating it...particularly if it only takes 2 seconds...
- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1And how is a developer going to re-write reasonably low-level sections of the iPhone OS GUI to allow copy and paste between apps please? They can't even write something that stays resident - no background processes remember.
- blergle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11Yeah why don't they write their own input handling routines while they are at it, or maybe their own complete OS for the iPhone hardware! FFS.
- Tamant, on 07/15/2008, -9/+1Maybe the jailbreak will change all this!
- Laminarcissus, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2Gotta love a phone you have to break to make work. Reminds me of all those Windows jokes about having to press "Start" to shut down.
- et3isme, on 07/15/2008, -7/+1Right now, to me copy and paste is more of a tool on an iphone than anything else, if Apple would put that ability on the iphone it would explode in popularity
- bpapa, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13Yes, I can see the ads now touting "an iPod, a phone, a communications device... AND A COPIER AND PASTER"

- jun2san, on 07/15/2008, -7/+2I hope they don't sign a contract with Tom-Tom. IMHO I like Garmin's maps better.
- Hello1024, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4The maps are purchased from a third party mapping organization, and IMO, for the UK at least, all maps except full Ordnance Survey maps are utter rubbish. The Garmin POI's (gas stations etc.) are in some places more than 15 years out of date! I find it shocking that they can ship a product without contour lines on the map or other things that every paper map has had for hundreds of years!
As far as software is concerned, the Garmin software is pretty poor - it's still very sluggish and randomly says "Unable to calculate route to destination" when there is a clear and obvious route. TomTom is much faster and easier to understand the main screen of, although it's menus can be a bit lengthy sometimes.- zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1I haven't experienced any of that with my Garmin.. Don't know where you're coming from. Anyways, I kinda stopped using my Garmin when I got the iPhone 3G.
- Hello1024, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1zeeky: You have to have a tomtom to compare with to really feel the speed difference. It isn't that garmin is slow, it's that tomtom is a lot faster in comparison. One thing for example, with detailed maps and main roads avoided, it can take as long as 20 mins to calculate a route, and then a further 20 mins every time you miss a turning.

Excuse me?
I would have thought copy / paste support would have come just after "power button" and just before "email functionality" in terms of development priorities.
FFS.- et3isme, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3I totally agree
- ozziek, on 07/15/2008, -5/+17let's add some more predictions:-
- copy and paste coming soon to iPhone
- MMS coming soon to iPhone
- iChat coming soon to iPhone
- iPhone to be thinner at some point in the future
- New iPhone firmware coming
Keep them coming- xptical, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Add to that:
"Open in New Tab" support for Safari.
I would like to open 10~20 tabs in Safari and then browse through them during my ride to work. As it stands now, Safari seems to force a refresh when you switch tabs *after* you leave the original WiFi area.
Oh well, back to waiting for JailBreak and FireFox. - rubaaan, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2dont forget firefox! comming soon
- ajb2015, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3still waiting for a user-replaceable battery, but apple knows what i want better than myself i guess.
- ozziek, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Or a battery add on would be fine, I think someone is working on that as they did for the first version.
I tried my belkin battery pack with it and was told "This accessory is not compatible and will not charge your iPhone". Nice - I was looking forward to looking like a tool having it suckered on the back of the phone!
- ozziek, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Or a battery add on would be fine, I think someone is working on that as they did for the first version.
- xptical, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Add to that:
- mwrl, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8Now if they could just provide a battery that can handle all these new tools.
- spamcrusher, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3Copy and Paste is nice, but no big deal. Version 2.0 is buggy as hell, I've had multiple crashes and experience a lot of lag. At first I figured it might be apps, but I experience the same slugishness on a freshly restored phone with no apps installed. First priority for Apple before adding features is to push out a software fix, hopefully this comes soon.
- schlagzeuger, on 07/15/2008, -10/+3my 3G HTC Kaiser running TomTom has been able to do this for a year. And it has copy/paste and a keyboard. Now DIGG ME DOWN, Apple fanboys!
- jasmus, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5I think you'll learn that calling people apple fanboys won't deter them from granting your wish. Buried for yet another "my phone is better because i bought it" comment.
- Sparky9292, on 07/15/2008, -8/+2I have a 3G iPhone. (after waiting 5 hours in line)
Missing copy paste is probably the one most irritating missing feature in the iPhone. I'd love to copy something on a website and slap it into the notes app.
For me this takes precidence over missing MMS, low quality 1.3MP camera or any other common gripes about this phone.- PainToad, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6It's a 2MP camera, good to see you researched your purchase
- lazn, on 07/15/2008, -9/+5With no copy and paste I am not sure I want it.. Without it, it isn't a smart phone just a glorified MP3 player with a cell phone duct taped on.
- gearhead364, on 07/15/2008, -4/+5Really, still no copy and paste, this could be accomplished very easily and would stop people from bitching.
- c5kirk, on 07/15/2008, -4/+4This whole "didn't make the cut" thing is just weird. Something so basic that every other smartphone out there has had it for years and it doesn't make the cut? Something bemoaned by every iPhone review ever done... including reviews in those not-so-geeky publications like The NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and Time magazine? I guess we'll just have to wait until Steve Jobs comes across something he wants to copy/paste on his iPhone and I bet we'll get it really quick then.... or just buy a BB Bold instead :)
- pciulla, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4So when the law gonna pass about not using iphone apps in the car (texting still legal)
- pciulla, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6copy and paste app for iphone coming soon!
- Lancelot9201, on 07/15/2008, -6/+1Honestly, I believe the reason some additional features weren't included is due to the lack of processor abilities.
Take the 2MB camera, why didn't this get upgraded to 5MB.? I think it's because the processor can't handle the additional
load. Especially if they add other features that people are demanding..I think that's also why they didn't include turn by turn. To be able to constantly updates its location GPS needs to work harder than the processor can comfortably handle. Could it be that's why they avoided some things like "cut & paste". Apple needed to know that if they added any other features they wouldn't have to deal with complaints about latency or hanging. I could be wrong but I don't think so..- EmperorPsiblade, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1You're kidding, right?
It has a modern ARM processor that can handle rather complex 3D games, yet you think it can't handle a >2 megapixel camera? And what the ***** is a 2MB camera? ;P
The effect on performance would be insignificant. - uncwidiot, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure that cut and paste isn't that much of a drag on the processor...
- sonicbliss, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Moving around what...a few bytes/kb of text?
Look up the specs on the iphone then compare to existing 5mp phones like k850i by SE. And so you really think that 'copy and paste' will take up more cpu than surfing the web and playing music, or talking on the 3g network and surfing the net?
Very wrong Im afraid.
- EmperorPsiblade, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1You're kidding, right?
- ajb2015, on 07/15/2008, -3/+9apple is so stubborn about pointless ***** sometimes. how hard would it be to implement copy and paste? or MMS? or video recording? or a ***** replaceable battery? its like the customer says "great, this is an awesome device, but want this feature too, please." and apple says, "no, you don't."
- znicket, on 07/15/2008, -6/+4"If I had asked people what they truly wanted - they would have answered ´a faster horse´" - Henry Ford.
Sometimes companies need to lead the way - customers tend to be conservative and holding on to old fashioned ways.- zeeky, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6i wish i had a 60 mph horse right about now
- orph3us, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2or background apps. thats the biggy for me. and why i wont be upgrading to 2.0 until i can jailbreak it
- colincornaby, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Technically, easy to implement. From a UI perspective, not that easy...
http://daringfireball.net/2008/07/copy_and_paste- tnoy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nchuidJ_CYw
This is one rather well executed method.
- tnoy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nchuidJ_CYw
- znicket, on 07/15/2008, -6/+4"If I had asked people what they truly wanted - they would have answered ´a faster horse´" - Henry Ford.
- mleither, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2If so many people want copy/paste that there is a whole article written about it with over 350 diggs, it better be on apple's list! I don't have an iPhone yet, but I want one. And when I get one, I fully expect to be able to apple c and apple v at my leisure!
- awfulgrace, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0There's no apple key on the iPhone...
- awfulgrace, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1There's no apple key on the iPhone...
- leprix, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I have a Garmin. I DONT have copy/paste....
- Sithlrd, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3Been using my iPhone for nearly a year and I dont miss copy/paste. Neither does anyone else I've ever spoken too about it. Give it a rest.
- incandescent, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Ah, okay. I guess we must all be wrong then just because you don't want a BASIC FEATURE OF EVERY OTHER CELL PHONE.
- andreo, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I can't think of a time when I've needed cut and paste either since I've had the phone either. However that doesn't mean that there won't be a a moment or two when I will REALLY wish I had the function.
I do wish I had MMS though.
- e2superman, on 07/16/2008, -5/+3If some ***** rear-ends me while looking at his iPhone trying to get directions (without audio so he has to hold up the phone close to him -- not looking at the road) I am going to throw my ***** Blackberry at his iCrotch when he gets out of the car.
- znicket, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3"A recent Nielsen survey said that people wanted the following in their phones: Bigger memory, bigger screens, longer batterylife and keyboards. You know what, it's called a laptop!" - John C. Dvorak.
I don´t usually agree with Dvorak but in this case I think he has a point. - carlosrizo, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1I am no developer but wouldn't it be great that instead of stating the obvious we provided some ideas to implement cut and paste instead? Maybe the developers could get inspired.
Here is mine: On preferences allow additional functionality to the iPhone's 'home' button. You could keep the factory settings or apply new functionality for one, two, and three taps of the 'home' button.
For instance:
1. A short tap will always take you to your home screen.
2. One sustained tap to the 'home button' (plus your finger on the text) will allow you to highlight the text you want to copy or cut.
3. Two short taps of the 'home button' will cut the highlighted text
4. Three short taps will paste the text on the clipboard into any app or place wanted.
Does it sound too complicated?- reformation, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2yes it does
- prgmctan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1tap tap tippy tap
- deadbaby, on 07/16/2008, -2/+5My BlackBerry has cut and paste and I can't remember ever actually using it for anything. I'm sure there are some practical uses for some people but honestly those people are better off with a Windows Mobile or BlackBerry anyway. The iPhone is primarily an entertainment, web browsing, game platform. Apple doesn't seem to be having any problems finding customers to buy a phone without copy & paste so I'm guessing they have a pretty good idea what their target market really is right now.
For GPS I really think a stand alone unit is the way to go. I use my phone in my car primarily for music & voice calls. The way the iPhone handles that is great (fades out the music, takes the call, fades the music back in when Im done) I'm not sure how it would juggle voice, music and GPS gracefully. My BlackBerry also has GPS TeleNav /w Sprint. I used the free trial for a day and it was atrociously slow to locate me and the screen was too small to really see the maps easily while driving. Not something I'd use. The Garmin phone is probably a much better choice for people who really need GPS & Phone combined.
So my point is if the iPhone doesn't do what you want it to do, don't buy it. You're probably not the target market for it and you won't be very happy with it. Get something that works for your needs. - GarrettB, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1The problem for them must be the implementation of copy/paste, because it's just one big public variable for the whole phone to read. Only able to go into NSTextFields, etc.
- trodemaster, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Seriously diggers give apple the feedback they need!
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html - HumanRecalled, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3umm last i checked isn't it the" PRIORITY " a company t listen to not only it's fan base but it's buy customers ?
I mean really !
People were asking about and summarizing about cut and paste this before the launch of the 1st gen Iphone !@ - jun2san, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1So you haven't used your Garmin in 4 days?
- poponegra, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=cFBQwugCS94
It's only 3.8 GB lol! - PosedMagnet, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0How about they stop everything else they're doing and get some more shipments of phones out to AT&T stores, eh?
Kinda pointless to add ***** to a device no one can ***** find/buy. - hayseed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3'legal issues' holding up turn by turn makes sense. When you drive off a bridge, because your .99 cent turn by turn app told you to, who are you going to sue? Apple? the developer?
- insaneses, on 07/16/2008, -1/+0How is it pointless? Obviously they are in high demand, and have already sold over a million. I guess those million users don't need any updates.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/16/2008, -1/+0Oh, and if they add copy & paste now, they won't have anything to re-sell you next year.
Same thing why they haven't added video/picture MMS related stuff. - reformation, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1I don't give a ***** about copy and paste - do I win £5?
- sparkmonkeyz, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1My blackberry pearl handles copy/paste quite nicely, and integrates it into applications on the phone. I don't think it would be that hard for them to do it, I just think they're lazy. How I wish I had an iPhone though.
- smakusdod, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Buried as fake. Do you think we are that supid Apple? Nobody falls for your fake spokesperson "Greg Joswiak".
Like we wouldnt know that "Joswiak" is just a combination of Jobs and Wozniak. Clever, but not clever enough!!!!!
