- gunnerycox, on 10/12/2007, -7/+58This sort of device seems perfect. Instead of building a DVR type device that will become outdated within a few years, Apple will keep the majority of the grunt work on the Mac or PC and then offload only the essential pieces to the Airport Express. This will allow for greater adoption, since it will be easier to buy a $99-$129 Airport Express rather than a $500 set top box. I am quite excited to see what apple has up their sleeves with this one.
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Yes it has been done, just like the other hd mp3 players before the iPod. Also just because something has already been done doesn't mean its any good.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+48Yes, there already is the Media Center Extender... but now it'll be easier to use and look pretty. That's generally how Apple works.
- guymc, on 10/12/2007, -13/+43Oh, please don't talk to me about Media Center Extender...
I bought a Media Center PC -- first PC I've ever owned after years of being a Mac fan. I needed the PC for remote access to work applications -- they refuse to support Mac-based remote access, even though the software they use supports it. So I decided to get double-duty out of the machine to record video.
Only problem? Once the recorded on the Media Center PC in my office, how do I get it to the big TV in the living room? Moving it to my Video iPod works, but I'd prefer to have full resolution to the TV, so I bought a LinkSys Media Center Extender. Even with a wired Ethernet connection, I can't make the damn thing stream video. The folks on board at the biggest independent site for Media Center enthusiasts can't figure out why, either. $250 down the drain.
I'll bet an Apple solution would work first time, every time -- right out of the box. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Apple generally doesn't invent products. They take something and make it simple and easy to use. Media Center is nice, but I can only imagine Apple's spin on it.
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I don't know what Xbox 360 you've been using, me and my friend have been trying to get his to work for months. It is such a pain to set up streaming content between his PC and 360 that I wonder if it's even worth it.
- spookshowbaby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26Some of us don't feel like buying an XBox.
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -25/+39It has already been done. It is called Media Center Extender.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@flag564, If you dislike Apple so much then why not block the category? Or are you just some 10 year old troll looking for attention?
- pwnrOiNK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yea the long awaited Airport Express AV edition !
Hope this is going to be working with a new frontrow version and of course the standard remote apple is using now.. or maybe a new ipod revision that you can use as a media remote ! - quirk3k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@flag564
"Apple steals other people's ideas, but I give them a pass by saying it's more pretty."
1) Every company in the tech industry takes existing ideas and refines them. Picking out a single company and calling it theft when they do it is de ewe em be dumb.
2) Don't confuse pretty with usable. Apple learned in the '90 that releasing useless products that look pretty was a losing strategy. Yes, Apple products are pretty, but it's the usability of Apple products which sell them. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13So the movies are 10+gigs A PIECE? My god, what is the resolution?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Apple generally doesn't invent products"
So the personal computer doesn't count?
How about the PDA? - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -2/+11There is an issue of resolution. There is no way that a movie store is gonna have the same ***** resolution as the other movies on the ITMS... or something is horribly wrong.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Block the Apple category if you don't like it...it's not that hard.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I've set a new rule for myself - I just block anyone who uses the word "fanboy" seriously.
It's great, I've been able to avoid a huge number of comments from teenagers, and Digg reads so much better now! - extraspecial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@nofxjunkee, but that's the thing about Apple's (consumer) machines, they're nearly silent.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hmm...that's funny. I find that MPEG-4 at 1GB/movie is perfectly acceptable quality. Unless you're talking about an iPod Nano...
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ireland has a valid point. In a small place, or somewhere where your PC is close to the tv if you have a loud computer you turn it off. I rarely turn on the old P3 here because it's loud, and I've moved my loud Athlon XP box to my room because it's just too loud near the tv. My (idle) mini is quiet enough, and my other box is silent so they stay on all the time.
(I'm looking forward to getting a new Mac on Intel so I can run WinXP in Parallels and get rid of a stinkin' loud POS.) - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Hopefully Apple won't bugger things up again. I mean, the last time they came out with a bridge device, the AirTunes express, it was a sorry attempt at bridging the home computer to your home theater system. No remote control, no on-screen display or navigation, no real functionality except to wirelessly connect your computer/laptop to your stereo connection. I mean, honestly, in order to use it you needed to have direct access to your computer to do something as simple as change the song playing. I saved myself $150 by simply connecting my PowerBook directly to my stereo using such low tech as a phono jack.
If there is any truth to this streaming media device, I think I will be setup for another dissapointment because this WON'T be the set top box that people have been hoping for from Apple. I will probably be AirTunes II, now with the ability to stream both audio AND video to your home theater, but without a remote, on screen navigation, or otherwise, any useful control at all.
If you need proof that Apple doesn't know how to get into the living room, look what they did with their latest iPod Video and the A/V connection kit. I mean, you can't even browse the iPod's menus to switch from playing back songs to playing movies, even though it comes with a remote. What point is a remote if you have to get up and manually setup the iPod to playback movies or songs? - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@flag564
I think this kind of labelling does a great injustice to some of the Apple crowd. Some people are just genuinely enjoying their computer experience. Is that wrong?
On the other hand, maybe you are right that there is some give and take. Next time someone posts a link to their blog where they get all excited about some announced but not yet implemented feature of an upcoming release of Windows, I'll try not to rain on their parade.
Windows users who enjoy the windows experience, I salute you... - DoctorDuckey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"But as he reclines with his feet perched on the sprawling Apple boardroom conference table, Jobs is likely enjoying a chuckle or two -- he's been planning something bigger, something better, something everyone will want."-->Jobs is not some all-knowing God.
---
I love Apple stuff, but this article just plain sucked in terms of journalistic writing. *Jobs is likely enjoying a chuckle or two*--t3h suck writing, throwing in the writers own bias--AI and other Apple rumor sites just degrade the integrity of online journalists. - wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would someone pay 10$ to rent a movie from itunes when netflix is $20 a month. I can rip the dvd myself and put it on my ipod for $10. No thanks steve this seems like it will bomb
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because that's illegal?
- guitarmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6When I go on long road trips, I have no objection to watching movies on my ipod
- pouwerkerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Um...to be fair it wasn't really Apple's realization that the screens were too small on an iPod for watching full-length movies. People assumed Apple's intentions for iPod far too deeply, and fake Apple products assumed this quality. As much as I never believed Phil Schiller when he said something along the lines of "iPod is first and foremost a music-playing device" when the video-playing capability was added a little less than a year ago, Apple is probably trying to take as many baby steps before switching to a touch-screen iPod like Apple fanboys have depicted. It wouldn't make a lot of sense for Apple to release a full-fledged iPod for watching movies so quickly because then they would significantly reduce the need for frequent future product updates, and therefore a long-term loss of revenue.
Anyway, a media streaming device seems like a very probable entry for Apple into the living room. Will it support Front Row? This could be pretty exciting. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"So far the score is
True - 0
BS - 1929934990444330550 (and rising fast)" - flag564
Uh, dude, I think that's the score of your diggs... - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, you aren't renting, you've bought the movie.. just locked into itunes software. and you ripping the dvd is technically illegal. sure, you can argue as long as you keep paying for your netflix subscription, you can play the movie.. just speeding up the delivery process. But it's still not a viable legal means. and no where near for the general consumer.
Not that I'm saying $10/movie is a good deal. I believe that should be the max, and $5-7 be the normal price... and near high def. I won't say no DRM because honestly, I don't think that will ever go away soon. The current quality on the iTMS store is terrible. It's almost "ok" for tv, still blocky. But I don't always want to watch it on TV... I like to watch things to the side while I work - muaddib420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i for one am interested to see if this pans out and how it'll be implemented.
some questions:
1) will it have a remote control so that you can control your computer if it's in another room (i.e., will it have a bridge software on the host machine?) and if so, will there be a GUI on the television?
2) what kind of outputs (HDMI, component, coaxil)?
3) is wireless G fast enough to stream video reliably?
4) will it be DVD definition (480p) or high def (720p)?
5) will you be able to watch the content before it finishes downloading?
if the answers are 1) yes 2) HDMI 3) yes 4) 720p 5) yes ... and the price is less than $200, then i think apple may have a winner. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Or are you just some 10 year old troll looking for attention?"
Ding ding ding! Looks like we have a winner!
flag564's desperate whining on Apple diggs appears to be a cry for help. Could somebody PLEASE be his friend? (Unfortunately it can't be me this week - I have a scheduling conflict) - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tech-savvy users and people with time to rip DVDs probably won't use this service much, you're right. A lot of people want convenience, and it's much easier to just click a button and download than it is to queue up in Netflix, wait for the mail to arrive, rip the disc, convert the files and load them onto your media device.
The way I look at it, I break down my salary by the hour, and think about whether it's worth my time to do everything myself, or just pay a couple bucks and save my time for more valuable pursuits. That's why I will buy an album on iTunes rather than spend the time searching P2P apps or torrent sites and waiting for the download, which may or may not be decent quality once it arrives - or hauling my ass to a record store and trying to find it on the shelves.
I suspect the same model will work here. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think video streaming over G has been demonstrated to be problematic. And since N is taking so pathetically long to be ratified, perhaps Apple will follow the rest of the market for now and release a "Pre-N" or "Draft N" device.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ N3LDAN -
I'm sorry, but that's just a bad comparison. Its more like "don't buy a kia and expect a mercedies." Emachines aren't nearly good enough to be compared to Toyota. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Apple steals other people's ideas, but I give them a pass by saying it's more pretty."
Then tell that to EVERY PC MANUFACTURER that has even made a computer because according to you they took someone's idea and made it prettier. - bbrockchalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does anyone keep track of how many of these Apple rumors and predictions actually come true?
- DoctorDuckey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Plus, what's the angle? The 'one more thing' or the leak? This guy can't write a lead for crap.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Well, a new iSight is due as well. My work is totally out of them and that never happens. Both the SoHo and 5th Ave. stores are out of them too.
- thecharliefarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2people whinging about apple fanboys? sigh.
- MaxDrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This reminds me of all the speculation regarding the last Apple special event. Remember how disappointed everyone was after that debacle (I don't even remember what it was Steve announced).
When it comes to Apple, I'll get excited when the fat lady sings. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4XBOX Media Center. End of story. Works with any format, nothing further needed than just a few simple samba shares and a basic network. Oh, and did I mention it can all be done for under $100?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dude flag564 what is your deal, you say that you hate the arrogance and fanboyism of apple but in your defense I wanted to believe that you were at one point in time indifferent to apple stories along with the users that want to keep up with what was going on with the company. This could of easily been remedied by having the apple catagory turned off, but of course I gave you the benefit of doubt and realized that maybe you too were intrested in apple news but were sick of the extreme cult like following of Apple, Which I agree, to follow a company blindly, any company for that matter is retarded but upon looking at your digg history I realized that you had a personal vendetta agaisnt apple and that in itself made me wonder why you had to be so vocal about destroying just a another of those company that provides consumers with tools whether it be Apple, Microsoft, Linux or whoever. Thats all these are and to take them so seriously that you would absoultely blindely adour them or in your case blindly spread hate propoganda is just ***** retarded.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"but that's the thing about Apple's (consumer) machines, they're nearly silent."
You obviously have not played around with a PowerMac G5, when that sucker gets hot the fans blast at jet engine speed. I could of swore mine actully lifted up off the desk once. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"So you Apple folks will waste time downloading a HUGE movie file for HOURS on a device that can maybe hold 3 of these things just so you can hook it to your TV or play it on a computer?" - flag564
And yet again flag564 proves he has no idea what he's talking about. And still no one is surprised. - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Macs come with a remote, you fool.
- iJump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iGlasses = iSore
Simple as that. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@flag564,
"I dislike arrogant fanboys and the snobbish attitude when it comes to that company. You merely cannot stand the idea that someone offers a counter to the 24/7 "Apple is de God" BS that is the Apple category on Digg."
Because us Mac users like to use our computers. You know how when you see basketball fans they act the same way because they like basketball.
"Besides, when you see a MS story, do you resist the temptation to tell everyone how much they suck?"
Some do, I've been guilty of it but when I practically have to upgrade almost everything in my computer to run Vista pay an outrageous price and still put up with Spyware and viruses? You can kinda see why we bash it. I like many aspects of PC hardware, just Windows is shot OS and Linux isn't reeally practical. BTW who ever said quality is cheap anyways? - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@extraspecial: My point was just that not everyone has a new, silent Apple. Some of us have other machines, new or old, Apple or not, that are loud. We don't keep them on all the time so having to keep a computer on to stream to the TV might not be ideal. That's all.
(In a perfect world we'd all own a quiet new Mac in addition to whatever else we use, but yeah...) - jediorange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How does a DVR become outdated? I still use my original TiVO to this day. I have gotten others, including an HDTV DVR, but I don't find my TiVO outdated.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who said anything about renting the movies?
EDIT: Didn't refresh my screen and was beaten to the reply. - the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this new style that AppleInsider seems to be writing in. It's wittier, more laid-back - how a rumor site should be.
ThinkSecret tends to take things a little too seriously, and their articles end up sounding boring in comparison. -
