- Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -14/+80@themacthinker - lemme guess.... you have Steve Jobs bed-sheets and underwear covered in Apple logos?
- noctumfish, on 10/12/2007, -11/+74this is what I just don't get about the anti-apple people. they always attack costs. Apple's pro line is a premium product like the pro lines of alienware, voodoo, and the Dell XPS. Of course its more expensive than a gateway 699.99 costco special.. its a better product and people are willing to pay for luxury. A Kia is a car that will get you around this is true, but if you want a performance vehicle you tend to buy more expensive luxury cars like a Cadillac or a BMW.
I mean... duh! not all computer are created equal and neither are their price tags.
freakin' commies. - goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Just after I came to Japan in 1998, the last of the Apple products were removed from the primary retail space at the major electronics retailers, and Apple was given its own space (small secluded and crappy space) that shoppers would never go to unless they were specifically looking for Apple. So the likelihood of an average consumer buying an Apple product dropped off to near zero.
In 2003, Apple's first store in Japan opened. Japan still had a lot of diehard Apple lovers, as you can see if you watch this incredible film of the line up at the Apple's Ginza store on opening day: http://homepage.mac.com/hsk/applejapan.html
Now this is the point. About 4 months ago, the major electronics retailers in Japan moved Apple back out into the main retail areas. And many retailers have given Apple a very high profile space. This is clear evidence that Apple's momentum over the past few years, largely due to the success of the iPod, is hitting Japan too.
I mention all this because the article says "it'll be the MacBook mini that truly gets the ball rolling in Japan once again". I think that's not true at all. The comeback may be slightly lagging behind Apple's comeback in the US, but it's clearly here. The ball is truly rolling in Japan already. - mysticmcj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3010-20K max writes? What are you smoking?
While I agree it should be user-replaceable, you are severly underestimating the lifespan of flash memory. My nano would be toast by now if it only could withstand 20K writes.
Start here and read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory but I know tat flash write cycles are on the order of millions, not thousands. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39A 12'' Macbook Pro would be amazing. Too bad it would have some terrible thermal characteristics.
- bluering, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Howsabout a 12 inch macbook pro with a rotating screen tablet type interface and Multi-touch? That would make it kind of like a bigger iPhone but still give you the option of using it like a traditional laptop when you need it. I would buy one if it were under $2K. I think I am not alone.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yes, and it will come out on the same day as the touch screen iPod...
- Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28It's missing something.. oh here ya go. I fixed it up:
BREAKING AMAZING RUMOR: Apple to release awesome gadget we will all love!!!!!`````1``~1`11212 - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"too bad it's specs would be too close to the MacBook for anyone to give a damn, or to pay a premium for it" - ninjab3ar
People will pay extra for small. Look at the price premium per GB of the iPod nano over the iPod video - yet they're still flying off the shelves.
There's plenty of market for a subcompact MacBook. I know I'll buy one, if they offer a consumer-level model... - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I took the challenge, and assembled a comparable Mac Pro on NewEgg:
$1,379.98 - Dual Intel Xeon 5150 Woodcrest 2.66Ghz
$517.99 - Intel S5000XVNSATA Dual Socket 771 Intel 5000X Extended ATX Server Motherboard
$75.99 - CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB)
$88.99 - ASUS GeForce 7300GT 256MB
$79.99 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB HDD
$55.99 - Athena Power AP-U1ATX30A 300W Power Supply
$32.99 - Pioneer 16X DVD±R DVD Burner
$279.99 - Microsoft Windows XP Professional with SP2
---------------------
$2,511.91 - Total
Oh, except you don't have a case in that price, and it's got kind of a ***** PSU for pushing 2 Xeons, and there's about 20 bucks for shipping. Keep in mind that for 11 dollars less, you could have it shipped to you _free_ and already assembled. And with a year's worth of tech support. And software that I didn't bother to include in the price. And, yes, it's pretty.
So for the last time, can we drop this whole "Macs are expensive" *****. You get what you pay for, and that is that. - flickr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'd like to see someone build a "PC version" of the Mac Pro for less than one costs me with my Apple developer discount (I'm talking comparable components, not crap parts!). Those two Xeons and fully buffered RAM are going to be pretty darn expensive on NewEgg. Good luck.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12If the keyboard is standard size and the screen isn't too small, it would be a great tool for me in my work. I'm constantly toting and using a 12-inch iBook in the field. Anything bigger than the iBook in size and weight (about 5 pounds) would be too much. Something lighter would be great.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@ninjab3ar
You don't remember the 12" powerbook very well then do you. It was spec. for spec. nearly identical to the 12" iBook for a while. Just a little bit faster and thinner and that was one of there best selling machines. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@bluering
I think you are dreaming.... - arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yeah, and the Mac Tablet and Duke Nukem Forever.
I really get tired of all these Apple "rumors". It's that kinda crap that made me loose all respect for Engadget. "iPhone to be released Monday, it's not what I thought. I've said too much". I mean, really, what kind of ***** is that? Everyone knows that Apple never talks about an upcoming realease before a release date. So I just don't believe any kind of "rumor" or a new Apple product until I see it on Apple's website. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The comparison was between Apple's Pro line (meaning for professionals, not consumers) and other high end products. The consumer level Apple machines are very competitive on price.
- pxa270, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Two things:
* The 12" Powerbook G4 was smaller than the 2400 (which didn't even include an optical drive).
* Apple was never a "leader in the field of compact computing", not in the days of the 2400, which was less compact than the IBM 701C and later the Sony Vaio 505, nor in the the days of the PBG4, when Sony, Panasonic, Fujitsu all managed to churn out smaller and lighter laptops with built-in optical drives. - Hayl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Lame - there is no "proof" that this even exists.
- sesante2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That old Powerbook Duo has better design than most new pc laptops... WHY???
- noctumfish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12riiighhhht and no one will ever want a small hard to use qwerty keyboard on their cell phone and while watching videos and downloading music as well.
people HATE small laptops, what are those marketing people thinking. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13@ miles01110
A 12" Macbook pro would be amazing, too bad it's specs would be too close to the MacBook for anyone to give a damn, or to pay a premium for it
-Proud owner of a 15" MacBook Pro
Its just bad business.... - iDrinkKoolAid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6hey you ignorant troll, my boss, who is one of the cheapest people in the world, just bought a macbook to replace his failing $800 averatec. he bought it on his own, without any persuasion from a kool-aid drinking addict like myself. obviously, he thought the macbook was a good deal - he's also a happy owner and recent switcher. my boss is really happy that it was so easy to use iMovie and iDVD to create a DVD of his daughter playing the piano at a talent show. it was white too...
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The 12" PowerBook G4 was the best computer I've ever had. Reliable, fast (at the time), and the thing even took a hell of a drop and survived.
Then, during the switch to Intel I sold it for 300 dollars more than I should have.
I love that machine. - JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Something kind of funny. On digg, Apple and Rumor occur 25,900 when searching digg through google. Just doing a search for Rumor in and of itself you get 626,000. Interesting, huh? Oddly enough, the most rumored on digg? It would seem to be the Wii, coming in at 203,000. The PS3 comes in with 140,000. iPhone beats out Apple with 34,000. Very interesting statistics and if my attention span were longer I'd make a pie graph out of the whole thing.
- stickboy3k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Didn't this one come from Merlin Mann's butt? Much like the widescreen Beatles iPod?

(I dont own a mac) - Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15Roll on all the fake photoshop mockups of what this thing will look like! ;)
And crappy websites like engadget to post them ALL! - mos6507, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2I don't see why people are so hung up on optical drives. Rip your DVDs and CDs ahead of time, and install your software at home.
- gfair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is one factor that these speculative morons failed to note: 10 years ago Steve Jobs returned to Apple. He wasn't in charge during the development of the 2400, and one of his first moves when back at Apple was to kill off the sheer number of variations of Apple products that they were selling. Not surprisingly, in 1998, the Duo was killed off. That was very shortly after Jobs got back in.
The other thing this article doesn't mention is the source. But a scant few minutes before the publish date of the article, Bob Cringely broke an article about the Apple TV, and his article contains the following quote:
"It might, in fact, be the prototype for a whole family of Mac Sub-Minis."
I could make a claim that the AppleInsider article is a ripoff of this quote with a whole lot of useless filler and still be well within the realm of accuracy compared to the claims that Apple rumor sites regularly make. In fact, that's exactly what it is. What they did was backdate the article to make it seem like it came out approximately 1 hour prior to Cringely's article. Cringely's article came out at some time between 12 AM and 1AM today, the 16th, and the AppleInsider article is dated for precisely 12:00 AM, Midnight.
So yeah, I'm calling BS on this one. They cite no genuine source, and the timing and theme of the article is far too coincidental. - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am hoping that this thing is going to be under $1000.00 because I have a 15.4 Macbook Pro but I would like something a little smaller to cart around sometimes when I am not using photoshop or editing movies
- Oldschoolhack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have read a few comments on this thread about Sony Vaio. I own a Vaio, and I'd have to say its only as good as those exploding batteries that they came with. I had been a true Sony fan, until they try raping me in customer service and quality of their product. Being that I know two ... TWO other people with Vaios who had trouble, I'd have to say if you were ever considering one, please consider ANYTHING else. I'd rather dump tons of $$ into a alienware laptop (and I dont even game), than spend 2$ for a Vaio.
My 2 cents. Smaller/Thinner != Better/Quality
If apple makes quality it is a good buy, just don't fall for the name like I did with sony. - RexMaxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@poxonyou:
In Japan the phones are much larger than in the United States because of their transportation needs.
Because almost everyone takes public transportation they want their phone, mp3 player and PDA all in one slick little device.
Japan has phones far more advanced, and larger, than ours. It is just how they live. I think the iPhone will sell a bundle over there, provied that Apple doesn't do something stupid, like actually honor their Cingular contract. - pyrix86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Lol. I doubt very much this will happen. Surely Japan isn't a big enough market to make a whole new computer for? The macbook is selling incredibly well and remember SJ said that there will be an optical drive built in to every mac." - DegenerateGoat
That is such an american attitude. Japan currently has 127,463,611 people (wikipedia is great, wikipedia is good :p). Your telling me that if Apple could get similar adoption in Japan it wouldnt be a great ***** market? This notebook could help drive that market.
And a lot of tech companies build 'japan only' products. Cell phones companies for example, there are litterally hundreds of awesome models that simply dont work in the US or elsewhere. ASUS has an ultraportable with a TV tuner built into it that never hit australian stores. You can still by NEW Sony Clie's over there, Sony dropped the US, european and oceanic markets becuase there weren't enough sales, which is a shame becuase my (now broken) clie was the best PDA i ever used. - MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So this would be like an OQO (http://www.oqo.com/) that runs OSX?
I'll buy 7 of them. - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What on earth are you talking about?
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your PSP is not a computer.
And I don't really think it really matters who's first to come out with something. Apple was most definitely NOT the first to come out with a portable MP3 player, but the iPod is still the most popular device. - Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This would go over well in the Japanese market. There are quite a few Japanese students (yes Japanese not just Asian) and they have crazy small laptops.
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Comparisons have been on digg before. Macs do, in fact, cost less. But before Intel Macs, the comparison was not very useful. Now that all Macs are Intel-based, we can see that Macs cost less than comparable Windows PCs and can run Mac OS X too. Plus, they look better (though that's just me). In other words, you're paying less and getting more.
- cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with you there. I have a 14.1" Thinkpad T43 which I love. The size is just right. Not too big, not too small. However, just about everyone else I know who has a laptop has this huge monster Dell or HP. I know 14.1" isn't quite 12" but when is comes to a portable computer, smaller (while still very functional) is a major concern for me. Not too sure why it isn't for so many others. All I know is that my shoulders and back thank me for carrying a "thin and light" machine.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a great second computer.
- jeffeb3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope you weren't talking about the picture of the 2400...
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A laptop like this would no doubt command a premium price. I love my 12" powerbook, but I think i'm ready for something a little larger. For college the 12" was perfect, very light and portable. Now that I'm working and the pb mostly stays on the desk, some larger screen real-estate would be awesome ( I do have it hooked up to a 19" LCD, but the more the better).
- bendedavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those do seem pretty cool. I was also lookin at the Samsung Q1 but thinking about loading Ubuntu on it. No way do I want Vista on any system I own. But I'll definitely wait to see what happens with this before making any decisions.
- wowwowweewow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or eighth....
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wtf are you talking about.
- skinfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And they wear out after so many writes.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The iPhone seems a bit too big (small sells much better there) with so much competition with phones there."
The iPhone is a Smartphone, but in my opinion is more is a laptop replacement for commutes, the phone functionality which is good IMO is the bonus, that's why I think it will do well in Japan.
"I'm also going to say no to the iPhone idea. Japan actually has working 3G networks, so that factors into the iPhone's lack thereof."
The iPhone will be 3G in Japan just as it will be in the States, this can be achived through a software update, and I think the only reason it's not 3G out of the gate in the States in the simple fact that America doesn't have the 3G towers, less than 10% of the country is covered so it seems like your not ready for it yet. - jydesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't buy the idea of no optical drive. Seems like for a small home computer, this would be ideal for popping a in DVD, or importing all your CDs into iTunes in order to get it on your iPod and so-on. So, I can't see how this part of the rumor could be true - sure hope it's NOT. Home users could put up with a slower data rate on a Flash drive, but hooking up to an external optical drive or having to do it over a home network seems to defeat the purpose of a cheap portable device.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm also going to say no to the iPhone idea. Japan actually has working 3G networks, so that factors into the iPhone's lack thereof, and if you've seen some of the phones they already have in Japan, you'll understand that the iPhone is nothing special to them.
