- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+207Yes please! Now give me at least 720p and *real* discrete digital surround sound and I'll drop my Netflix subscription and toss my DVD player.
It's time to go big, Apple. - EPeters, on 10/10/2007, -9/+108Do we no longer use the word "speculation" when it comes to Apple stories?
- RadiantBeing, on 10/10/2007, -8/+96I would go for this. I'm sick and tired of going through the hassle of pirating. I'd rather just press a button and start watching. Getting old.
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -8/+79I wonder how many people you just caused to look at the title and then look at your comment about 5 times just to realize they're identical.
Oh, and single quotations always go on the inside of double quotations. - timusca, on 10/10/2007, -3/+56This would justify my purchase of AppleTV. I pretty much thought it was a useless device, but I will go buy one if this is true.
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -4/+48Nope, everything is factual until proven wrong.
- kodek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+45[/sarcasm]
You better close your sarcasm tags next time. Now the whole page is marked as sarcasm! - rwallen, on 10/10/2007, -22/+63So it's like the xbox 360, only no high def.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+44That's a step in the right direction. Now how about Apple lets us burn our movie PURCHASES to DVD-R in standard formats, then maybe I'd actually use their video store to buy video as well... Purchased content should not contain DRM. This rental offering seems pretty nice though, with competitive pricing, and a nice 30-day viewing window. Now, all we need is the ability to order them directly from the AppleTV, and I can kiss Comcast On-Demand movies buh-bye...
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -9/+46what?
- zaren, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Only, it's not identical. The "?" inside his title makes a world of difference. This is speculation, not statement of fact. It turns the title into a question, which is fine, since there's no proof that this is actually going to happen. I dugg him up, only to find three more people had dugg him down in the time it took me to do so.
- crackedplastic, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Xbox 360's movie and TV selection is pretty poor. The more the merrier though - the benefit is to the consumer.
- kylesherman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Quix I completely agree with you. 720p and surround is extremely important if Apple wants to stay ahead of the game. I too will drop my netflix subscription, no longer bittorrent 720p material and look forward to having HD content at the tip of my fingers. This could really be good...my media center is ready and waiting...
- hoppdawg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22This is what the Apple TV was made for.
- aixelsyD, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26I wonder how long it'll be before paying $2.99 will get old for you..
- Kyouto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Good call.
- deepdish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I am a Mac fan boy, but the same is true for Microsoft and Amazon and Hulu and ect.
It is the Studios and the RIAA that forces Apple and others to put in the DRM. Don't blame MS or Apple. Apple seems to be the only company that is not bending over backwards for the RIAA and the studios. - kodachrome22, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Perfect. 30 days is just enough time for someone to figure out how to crack the DRM on these things!
Seriously, though. I'm perfectly happy paying $17/month to get ~15 movies from Netflix. Why would I pay $3/each and want to have it for 30 days? I'd rarely watch a movie more than once and even if I did, it would be months or years later.
Now, give me an unlimited or close to unlimited plan for around what I pay for Netflix and then I'll jump aboard. Netflix's on-demand service can be seen as $1/hour per month IF you don't rent any physical DVDs and something like that from Apple would be killer (Netflix's on-demand selection leaves much to be desired). - dpknc84, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Have you learned nothing from the hacking community? Give it 24 hours and someone will circumvent any DRM thrown at them.
- rupprupp29, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Of course it's factual.. it's on the internet, silly
- krewenki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13That's all fine and good, but for the love of the spaghetti monster, bring it to Canada. I bought my AppleTV in anticipation of movies coming to Canada back in January, and i'm still limited to music videos and pixar shorts on my AppleTV. I'll pay $4.99 to rent a movie for 30 days, if I can just get it to happen all digitally on hardware I already own.
- cfizzo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14it's from cnn so it must be factual [sarcasm]
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Unless the content is at least DVD quality with 5.1 surround sound, I don't care.
- Disillusion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Proofread.
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I wonder if it will be truly "30 days" or one of these "you have 30 days to watch it through once" things.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13You honestly think you will be able to burn movies to DVD?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Wait, what are you saying?
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It doesn't matter. When quoting a quote, the double quotes change to single quotes.
- bkemper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They don't mention Apple TV, but hopefully that will be upgraded to match the Wifi iTunes features of the iPod Touch, and you will be able to rent or buy shows from that.
- bkemper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Quit your crying. Do you think we enjoy having dollars that are increasingly worthless compared to Pounds or other currencies?
- christor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Selection. Convenience. Gas. Time.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8No, there's just so much of it that since everyone is predicting everything that could possibly happen ever someone is bound to be right.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The ability to integrate my iTunes library to my home stereo in an ascetically pleasing manner was worth the price of admission to me. Everything else is gravy. The Apple TV is merely a kick-ass video iPod for the living room IMO.
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7But nobody does, because they refuse to sell their stuff online. Apple has a much larger collection than what is available on Xbox Live or any other online media store.
- DAllenJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7yeah, and no overheating either.
- bobdobolena, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Then again this gives you 30 days to get it from apple, and burn it to a DVD all for 2.99. Makes those DVD's at walmart for 4.99 look expensive.
- bkemper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Led Zeppelin and The Beatles are available on XBox 360?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Really??? Could you post a link to the hack that lets me run unsigned code on my xbox 360? I would love to make it into an xbmc 360 get get all the xbmc goodness in HD!
- SMcGeachy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Apple NEEDs HiDef!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7The xbox movie and tv selection seems themed to gamers...
- stubadub, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12You only have 24 hours to watch anything you rent from XBOX.
- bzooty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Wait, I just pretended that "The Secret" was full of crap. You're right, it's true.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8it's also common to spell it as comma
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6720p with true Surround Sound would be a GIGANTIC money maker for Apple.
Want to make even more money? Offer the rentals 3 weeks after the movie is released to theaters. Most movies only stick around 3 - 4 weeks anyway. Strike while the iron is hot. - thespace2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Nice, maybe they'll sell some AppleTVs now. Hell, maybe I'll finally buy one.
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Your speculation is completely ungrounded. Where the hell do you get off stating their pricing structure?
- bkemper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5So far you can't buy movies with Apple TV, so maybe they will be upgrading it at the same time to buy OR rent.
- umdigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No *****. Want to talk about ripped off. Try using a US credit card in London and buying beers for 13$ a pint. Who's the one getting ripped off now.
- KeepSwinging, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5most tv feeds are 480i, hd broadcasts are 1080i
- rwallen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6No you have 24 hours after you start watching it. Otherwise you have 2 weeks to watch it.
