"To be honest, I don't really care for the IMAC they look cheap. I think it boils down to me hating the all the white space on the monitor."
----------------------------------
You know it is fine if you don't like the design of the iMac, but if you think they look cheap, you've got your head up your ass. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -14/+49The Apple section of Digg is constantly under attack from trolls and yet the MS discussions get left mostly alone. Gee... wonder which group of users is the most insecure about their platform?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+44its not a monitor its a computer
- jm1234567890, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Perfect place for stickies
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -16/+40I am not sure if it would be smart to axe the 17" since some people do not need anything bigger.
Of course as the article says they might keep it around, but that could be strictly for educational markets which leaves out the low-end consumer or those who prefer the small form factor.
A touch-screen 24" iMac would be an entirely new way to interact with not only computers but also with media.
It will be interesting to see where Apple goes with this. - Tryke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23This pressure on poor, impressionable machines to be thin in order to be sexy is driving perfectly healthy computers into starving themselves!
- Drgn547, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@hoist0that0rag
I am in awe of your comment...
The 24" "shiny mac thingie" is a desktop... not a laptop... you wouldn't bring it on a plane... dumbass. - KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19It's "iMac" not "IMAC" for ***** sake
- cgomez, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Ahaha. I love wild conjecture about Apple product, but really. I don't see how it can get much thinner, plus, there isn't really any need since it's a desktop. Make it faster and have more innovative features.
But in the spirit of rumors...remember kids: 8-core Mac mini at or before WWDC 07. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Whenever they do though, they have a way of making me love my mac one day and then the next all of a sudden. Wanting SO MUCH to buy the new design they have brought out.....
I have come to terms with the fast that I am their bitch... *grin* - allenb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Wrong.
You clearly don't, but a lot of normal people do lust after Apple products... do you think they'd shift as many machines as they do if they looked like Dells?
Like it or not, industrial design can be sexy - to boys and girls. - huber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I really hate when people say this. What would you like apple to do? Not Make new products because you just bought one?!!? Why should I not be able to go get a brand new Mac just because forchilli just bought one last month so Apple should wait 3 years before releasing a new machine? Lame.
You know this happens in the WinTel World all the time too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21"I don't see how it can get much thinner"
Famous last words there :P People used to think laptops couldn't get any thinner, until Apple and Sony started making them. Yet still, most laptops by anybody who isn't Apple or Sony are 3" thick monsters. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Apple has traditionally shifted the current models down into the next lowest price slot and discontinued the lowest end model when updating a given line of machines. The only exception to this is when they unveil a whole new design or introduce minor tweaks.
- Turbosc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16did somebody say new macbookpro displays LED driven. time to dig deeper...
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17A multi-touch 24" iMac would seriously rock, but somehow I doubt that will happen soon.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The world crumbles because of a lack of a delete key?
Man, are your priorities screwed up.
( fn + backspace ) - sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ inkswap
Good point. The same folks that can't wait to scream "be like everybody else and use Windows - it's more popular because it is better" like to turn around and scream "don't be like the sheep and buy iPods - it's just popular because of marketing".
I think most of them made the decision to hate Apple - ignore merits, attack mistakes, and accuse anyone that likes Apple products of fanboyism. They desperately want to write-off anyone that disagrees with them. Textbook insecurity - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"who gives a ***** about an 8 core mac?"
You're about to find out. What's sad is that even when the one millionth 8-Core Mac Pro is sold, you will still be clueless about the professional career world.
BTW, have you met flag564....? - ReyX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@inkswamp
There's an MS section on Digg? - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@zblackeagle
If you've ever opened one up, you'd realize that the sole purpose of that white space is to contain the tightly-squeezed-in computer within a single enclosure. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Anyone who uses the adjective "sexy" for a ocmputer has no chance of ever HAVING sex."
You'll understand when you're older... - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No one at Apple has ever thought of that. You are a genius.
... - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Does this apply to cars?
- cave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9IMO iMac's most beautiful incarnation was the G4 model, the one that looked like a desk lamp.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I mostly just read the apple posts because I find them much more interesting. If someone likes MS issues, more power to them. I wish everyone could just use what fits their needs/desires and stop linking their identity so closely with an operating system or hardware. If you don't like a product, buy something else and leave it at that.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"A touch-screen 24" iMac would be an entirely new way to interact with not only computers but also with media. "
Yeah, cause it would be very tiring on the arms. The only two reason the iPhone is touchscreen, is because it's already in your hands. An iMac screen is positioned at about 85ยบ, so it wouldn't make sense to give it a touchscreen. Altough it would no doubt be cool, it would have zero real world practicality. Your arms like to rest on the desk and that's the way it will stay. A 24" iMac with a new enclosure and a touchscreen keyboard might be a different matter (only though if it was done right). - EXIDY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Not to worry ... you're gonna ENJOY many good years with your new iMac!!!! Right now, the iMac is IMHO the best computer on the market, and Apple products seem to just keep on working.
I have bought my family a Mac an average of 1 Mac a year since the Mac 512 (w/HyperDrive). Everything since the G3 (in 1999) is running OS X very well and still a pleasurable user experience.
Apple ... Bring-it-on!!! - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In all honestly, I like the iMac link (once they moved away from the bubble gum styles), but still, I yearn for an inexpensive Mac that is separate from a screen, AND NOT the Mac Mini.
Take the guts of the iMac with its Intel Core 2 Duo, put it into a smaller enclosure but similar to the Mac Pro, call is Mac, period!. And let me configure it with decent video cards, hard drives, etc. Put it in the price range between $1000 - $2500.
I don't understand why Apple is reluctant to actually compete head to head with PC's with an equivalent product. Both the Mac Mini and iMac are cute products, but they deter most PC users away because they are used to the level of flexibility and options found in the beige box PC's. Most PC users already have a nice LCD screen, buying an iMac with its integrated screen is redudant, and few average PC users need dual screen support. However, the Mac Pro ends up becoming obscenely expensive for the average user that wants just a little more power and flexibility then the iMac line can offer.
Ultimately this is where I think Apple is lame and generally dumb, they can easily sweep the market by making a hugely popular Mac model line, that offers a chance for PC users to configure a Mac that is powerful, but not as expensive as the Mac Pro, without the added expensive of integrating a display (and the added cost of the R&D to pack all that technology into a thin and sexy package).
However, notice that Apple never competes within their own product line. Each Mac model fills in a niche market, with generally no overlap in performance or features. Apple purposely puts a generic low end video chipset in the Mac Mini along with lower performing CPU's, they don't want people to buy a cheap Mac with good graphics and decent performance. This forces people to consider the iMac lineup, with better graphics and performance, but limited flexibility. People that want that flexibility or don't want the integrated screen are forced to consider the Mac Pro line. Apple pretty much corrals their customers into one of three market segments and generally forces customers to pay more if they want more. But the greatly need something to fill the void left between the iMac and Mac Pro model lines.
Apple doesn't seem to realize that a Mac model line will sell obscenely well, and may very well be the one product that will truely launch Apple into direct competition with Dell and the Wintel world. The loss of sales of the super well designed iMac to the super performing Mac Pro will be made up for with huge sales of a Mac computer that PC users actually want and are craving. - ketha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8>Apple is too slow to bring out new products.
I think this is certainly true in recent years but only because Apple has been really pushing itself techologically (with the ipods) or working on the intel transition... I think apples next revision of hardware is going to be a radical push forward in all areas and it will look like the leapfrogged about three generations...
although mac rumors are getting silly... anyone can work out that a) all of apple's lines will be revised... b) they will be sexier, c) they will be slimmer d) they will be faster
i can now reveal the Mac Mini is being revised.. it will be all those things!. and the macbook/powerbook/ipod/iphone/appletv - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What I find most telling about when new Apple products are going to be released is that the Bargains bin (the link with the big "Sale" image) is nearly empty. So predictions?
New iMac 20 and 24-inch. Yeah what the article said. What I would like to see Apple do is allow us to use that empty space below the monitor with what I call the "Pismo". Slotted removable cases for adding or upgrading hard drives with a lever to remove them. Kinda like the G3 Pismo laptops allowed you to do with their optical drives to put another battery or drive in. To replace the drives in the current crop (or any model that has the built-in iSight. I replaced my kids hard drive in their G5 iMac (pre-isight) without many problems, but the ones since have a lot that needs to be moved aside) requires some major surgery.
Seeing how they are desktops, I don't see much point in making them thinner. Maybe some new colors? Black/red/blue. Some here have said they liked the lampshade G4 iMacs. I didn't and have no desire to see that particular model again.
Laptops. The MacBook Pros need a design update. They kept them looking like the G4s when they switched to Intel to keep some consistancy, but we're now almost a year and a half since their introduction. I think most Mac people would accept a slightly thicker design if it would improve performance and cool it down a bit. Again swappable drives would be a nice touch.
Towers. Nothing really wrong with the way the towers look. Just keep packing them with whatever the next gen Intel chip is and most people would be happy. I would like to see Apple come out with a mid-range tower for less than $1.5K. Doesn't need to be the same processor, the Core 2s are plenty fast and this would give some expandabilty for those who want it...like with hard drives, or using the monitors of our choice instead of what Apple decides with the iMac.
Mini: What doesn't the mini need? How about room for 1 or 2 full height 3.5-inch drives (cheaper and faster than the 2.5 drives they currently use) or a graphics card instead of the crappy integrated Intel. It might make the price a little higher, but could still be easily kept under $1K.
Anyway, it won't matter too much since I just bought a 24-inch iMac for myself last Christmas and won't be buying another for some time. Though my kids could use a new computer..hmmm, if I gave them MY iMac, maybe I could talk talk the wife into getting a new tower...nah, I'm dreaming. - IslandSaint, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15I hope they will drop the 20" iMac down to the $999 price tag the current 17" occupies. This would blow away competition, and help continue the switch to Mac and only help the Apple TV gain a larger user base.
- BillDoor, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Everyones is being dugg down. I smell trolls.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i have to agree with starmanta. if i spend hours on my computer, i like that my arms rests on the desk and i make small movements with my wrist and hand every now and then rather than having to point and drag across a vertical screen. a vertical touchscreen may be cool for some applications but the mouse isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
- binarymelon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Computer hardware is a moving target. If everyone was going to be upset every time something new hit the market, no one would ever buy anything.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree. I have an imac g4. It'll be nice if I could buy a better mini and a separate monitor, so next time I buy a new one I could keep the monitor and earn some cash.
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After constantly cleaning my kids grimy fingerprints off of my current LCD display, multi touch sounds like more of a pain than it's worth. Will it really add something to the user experience?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why comment on something you know nothing about? At least google "iMac" before you comment; this will, hopefully, make you sound somewhat intelligent.
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think K-Mart exists outside the US...
- BlueDjinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What else is there to "minimize"?
--they might be able to get rid of the "Leno Jaw" at the bottom, or at least reduce it
--they might be able to make the bezel even thinner (currently about 1" thick)
--they might be able to make it even thinner (it's currently about 2" thick)
--they might be able to tweak the center of gravity so that the stand is less deep (currently about 7.5" deep on the 20" model)
--they could add a built-in iPod dock, multi-card reader, and/or more USB/FW ports (including a couple on the side or front)
I suppose they could go with touch-screen and/or a portrait swivel option for the display.
Beyond that, I can't think of much else they could do to streamline the current model anymore. Thoughts? - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I expect we'll see some of the iPhone design (black front and steel look on the back) work its way into all the Apple computer product lines. How sweet would the iMac look if it took the scheme from the iPhone and launched with Leopard? I've been waiting for Leopard before getting a new mac so that would be icing on the cake to get the updated iMac at the same time.

- sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** A I have a thought on this: Decent speakers.
I don't know how they could do it, given the limited space, but I would like a set of speakers loud & clear enough to avoid using external speakers. Mostly to hear voice in movies and iChat.
To be fair, I've only used the flat imacs in noisy environments, so it may not be as bad as I think, but I KNOW the G3 iMac had the best speakers ever in an iMac. - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOLZ!1 You guys reeallly did get the joke, didn't you. Man, you guys and your senses of humour. Because I thought he was referring to some OTHER kind of eating disorder...
- isbhod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think you are right about that. The iPods at the UW's DOIT store (http://techstore.doit.wisc.edu/group.asp?cat=HARD&subcat=MP3Players&group=PLAYERS&login=P) have all gone on sale. They only sell stuff at "sale" prices if they are getting something new to replace it. Although this sale might be in anticipation of the iPhone, but then again all of their apple products are cheaper than normal (and not just the education discount).
- lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This probably isn't too far off.
The current line of iMacs are on sale at Future Shop here, and Apple stuff usually only goes on sale to clear out stock for product updates.
So, soon, I'd expect. - tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Other companies have touchscreen computers. I imagine they've thought about the possibility of dirty fingers and still decided to make it. They must think it's not that big of an issue. Same with handheld devices (like iPhone). I imagine you could maybe...clean the screen. That would be a lot easier than trying to clean the scroll ball on my mouse (curse that dirty scrollball).
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well for laptops, the thinking was that the sizes of HDDs were a major factor in how small they can get. the tiny iPod HDDs are not practical for laptop use, but now the rumors are that a few computer companies (Apple included) are looking into flash memory based systems. that will take everything to a potential new level of tiny.
the iMac also has the power supply inside, which adds bulk and heat. i don't think it is a big issue, but there will be room for reducing size down the road. even today i still have people ask me where the rest of my computer is (i have a current generation iMac). it's interesting that this form factor still has that "wow" factor today. -
