- redpoint73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank god. Put the Shuffle out of its misery. The Shuffle is a piece of crap. Lets take a small capacity MP3 player and TAKE OFF the interface. What a crap idea. You can buy a dozen other players from other manufacturers with more capacity, that actually have some controls and let you pick what music you play. And cheaper too.
I laugh my butt of whenever I see some college kid with a Shuffle. I know its because all his/her rich friends got better iPods, and they just HAD to get one too, but could not afford a
real MP3 player.
BMW should make a car that has no steering wheel, no pedals, and no windshield to look out of. It would also be less horse-power than a comparably priced car. But they could still have the BMW logo on it. And it would be the same color as other BMW's, so people would think it looked 'cool'. The same people that bought a Shuffle would buy this car.
The Shuffle is a perfect example of Apple's marketing genius. Lets take a piece of hardware, strip all the features off of it. Then we will market the lack of features as "cool" and "random" and overcharge for it. People will buy it anyway because it has an Apple logo on it.
Don't get me wrong, Apple makes beautiful products. Well designed, high quality, and easy to use. The Shuffle isn't one of them. - jedimasterdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is what I think. apple will release a 1 GB Nano for 99.99. It will sell like crazy. It will be for people who want a nano, but not not want to shell out 300.00. This is just my opinion, but If apple does do it they will sell like crazy.
- punkcoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have The 1GB Shuffle and think it's great. I just let iTunes randomly load music onto it and just listen to it. I don't need a screen since it's all my music and I know what groups I have in iTunes to get loaded on it. People always ask me, "since it plays randomly, what do you do when a song you don't like comes on?" Never understand that question, why would I have music I don't like? It's not like I just buy a CD with one good song and rip the whole CD to my computer; I just purchase songs I like.
- Webjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11GB? No. I would be perfectly happy with a 10GB Nano, bonus points if it plays videos.
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the 1GB nano replacing the shuffle I bet that the other nano sizes will be something like 4GB and 8GB or at least 6GB. They wouldn't do this change without uping the current nano.
So - shuffle replaced with a nano with color screen - other sizes 4GB-8GB. - ConEEE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1422
Link to the original article please. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I might think about getting one if the price waw right. But I doubt i'd pay what apple was asking for a 1gig mp3 player.
- J3bu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm this isn't a good idea. Feels like technology is moving backwards rather than forwards. No go apple, don't make this into another "shuffle" mistake.
- chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shuffle a piece of crap? I respectfully disagree. It meets the needs of some, but not all. I can afford any player I want, but have no need to look at a screen while I am jogging or driving(And besides, I know my own songs, thank you very much) and I appreciate the small form factor. For people listening to an iPod while riding the subway, for example, I can see the utility of the screen - but thats not how I use mine.
- heffer2k02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Making it SMALLER? I'm waiting on a 8gb+ before I get a nano. Stupid pokey suffle, who wants one?
- TheRealPod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no way they give up the shuffle form factor. I'd see enhancements to that first. The shuffle is too popular to give up on (with something that isn't superior like the nano was to the mini).
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is probably the reason of the 1GB shuffle being sold out until mid-January on Apples site.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not going to happen. No Digg.
The shuffle has its place in the iPod lineup and adding a screen wouldn't make it a shuffle.
There will be a smaller 1 GB shuffle (dropping the 512 MB shuffle) with a bookmarking capability that will go for $99.99. This can't be confirmed, but it is highly likely. - Esso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's a great idea. Not having a window has been a turn-off for some Shuffle shoppers. A lot of people who ask me about buying an MP3 player say they have no need for more than 1 GB, especially if they aren't into podcasts and audiobooks. The price should be more attractive also. A $120-130 price point would be much more appealing to those without tons of disposable income (meaning those with families ).
If some Shuffle die-hards are still offended by having a window, then they can just put a piece of tape over it (or scratch it out). - _HAM_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a 1GB Shuffle and it is perfect. I work/live at and around my house. I never leave for more than a few hours. I don't need to carry a month worth of music with me.
And as ChiefCrazyTalk noted it is tough. I could never treat the other iPods the way I treat the shuffle. They would be broken in a day and all scratched to hell. - mrblogadise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01 gig is plenty for a lot of people, what we need is a display screen to see WTF is on the device. I wanted a lightweight flash player for listening to Audible books while working or running around, I chose a Sandisk sansa over the Shuffle for the screen, and over the Nano for the price. I may not be a typical user, as I don't buy music from online shops, rather I convert music from cd's I own.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather increase storage space..
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wth are they doing? make it 6 or 8 gigs. not friggin 1...
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are going the wrong way. With the departure of the iPod mini (which was absolutely terrific in form and function), there leaves an obvious void in the 5-10gb range. Clearly, the technology to manufacture anything over 4gb in the nano form factor using flash memory does not yet exist. I will wait for this and use my trusty mini until then.
- M3Parker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WHY!? just get a Shuffle! Apple will lose money on this if they go through with it. 2gb and 4gb are perfect for the market. The only thing i could see them doing is upping the memory for the nano.
- chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my 1 GB shuffle - hope they keep it. Unlike the nano and its fragile screen, the shuffle is pretty much indestructable. And 1GB holds plenty of music for a workout or a long drive.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like it would be nice, a shuffle with a screen...pretty much. My sister would like it, but since i bought her a 4gb nano for xmas, i don't think she'll care about this much. But hey, i'm invested in apple....so any way they can raise the stock price, i'm game.
- CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01GB Nano I think would be a mistake. It would hurt sales on the Shuffle. Apple should just leave it as is. If anything they should just drop the price of the 2GB Nano to $150.
- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd buy one for $100.
- Ledwolf555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gotta say that I have the 1GB shuffle and it's great... But they need to start incorporating BLUE TOOTH into them before they start messing around with gimmicky marketing...
- prodigy311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CompUSA has discontinued the 1 gb shuffle.
- DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say drop the Shuffle, make the Nano in 1GB, 4GB and 8GB.
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why everyone's so down on the Shuffle. Most of the people I know who have them have regular iPods, but bought the shuffle to use for working out at the gym, etc. It's tiny, nothing to break, and you don't even have to take it out of your pocket to use it, since there's no screen you have to look at. Plus, you can use it as a flash drive. I wouldn't kill the shuffle if I were Apple.
But whatever, Jobs seems to have the Midas touch as of late. - gaiserrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the my shuffle. I put in the car, take on a plane, holds my real estate paperwork etc. I don't have a need for a fancy screen or the oouuuu&ahhhhhh factor of its big brothers. Besides, I am hard on my cell phone etc. Thats why I like the shuffle small and nothing to break.
BTW: redpoint73
Some people want simple and to the point mp3 players. Sure there are other players out there that are cheaper. They don't work with purchased itunes music. - mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought a 1Gb shuffle a year ago. I love it. I think a 1GB nano for the same price as the shuffle is a great idea. It would certainly be one way to increase the already dominant market share with it's reduced price tag.
And honestly, 1GB is more than enough music for a day. 60GB might be good for your entire library, but on a daily basis, 1GB is plenty. - bking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of people don't understand the Shuffle. It's true that some people get them just to have some form of an iPod, but a lot of people who have shuffles use them as a secondary mp3 player. I have a 30gig photo and a 512mb shuffle, and they both get a lot of use.
30Gbyte: Car, airplanes, subways, walking around on campus, home stereo.
Shuffle: Gym, skatepark, jogging etc.
The shuffle can get absolutely beat to hell, and still be 100% functional. The iPods with screens require bulky protective cases, or extra care when used in any kind of volatile environment. - iwillhackyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would buy a 1GB nano if just for working out, my 4 gen is a little big for jogging
- EarthBoundX5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GAY
- SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know what kind of people don't like a shuffle. The kind of people that buy/steal music just to have it. The kind of people that don't really like music, the kind of people that have 30 gigs of music but just have their 'favorites' playlist on repeat. The kind of people that have 15 different types of 'random' smart playlists but the first track out of them has never been played through. Come on, I know I'm not the only one out there with friends and 'colleagues' that spend more time choosing tracks than they do listening to them. The shuffle is designed with the polar opposite in mind. The kind of person that doesn't really mind listening to stuff that isn't there 'favorite' genre or tracks, or people who only collect music they actually like. I find it ironic people try to quantitize music, as it is purely qualitative in matter. The notion almost certainly comes from dull witted social circles which promote music for monetary gain. Most music is beautiful, enjoy it. I have a nano as well and they both have their functions.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I think the Shuffle is the biggest POS ever. I also think that it is a very good marketing scheme by Jobs. I hate the shuffle becuase it costs more than the compitiion, does less than the compition, yet people still buy it. Why? Because
1. It's an iPod, when sombody asks you "do you have an iPod?" most of the mainstream people think that having a iPod is a really cool thing and they want to say yes.
2. You can use music from iTunes. iTunes is the worst music store out there. The music sounds like crap to anybody that has heard any MP3 over 128 KBPS in their life, They are DRM'ed like a bitch, and they sound like crap (That deserves two mentions).
3. Its cheap. This holiday season, this thing is a real stocking stuffer. These things are flying off of the sheleves like tickle me elmo. These things are being bought for "starter" Mp3 players, like for Pre-Teens and the younger demographic. And why not, theve probably been beging for an iPod since the first rich kid in school broght it in.
But for a person who has any knowledge on this stuff, it makes no sence. Right know, a I river MP3 player, 512MB, is going for $99. That is the same price as a 512 Shuffle. Yet, it has a SCREEN, a voice recorder, SRS WOW effects, and it runs for 24 hours on one AAA battery. Also, it works with more music stores, such as Napster to Go and MSN music. - Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for in advertising for a certain company, and our advertising studio happens to be next to the company's commercial sales division.
I overheard the head of commercial sales discuss that he met with a few Apple guys who stated that only buy as many iPods as you would need until Feburary (because of Apple's lack of price protection). Sales asked why and Apple said that every iPod is going to drop $100 dollars then, with the shuffles starting at $49.99.
I was thinking of sending this over to thinksecret or a like site. - VelvetNightmare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was told at CompUSA by the manager that he had information that the 1GB was not sold out, but no longer being produced. Sounds like this is realistic, dugg.
- soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01 gig? why?
http://soccerob.com - scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think a great idea would be an 8 Megabit iPod, the size of a fake fingernail that I could glue to my hand.
Apple idiots. It might have been a good idea to think this whole iPod thing through before they released the shuffle, let alone Nano. - boicraig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0God I love the apple links! So tasty! Yumm.
++digg - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Even if I was thinking about getting a nano i'd rather see a 6gig version. I have a 5 gig mp3 player now, why would I want to downgrade?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No thanks, no nano for me..

What is Digg?
