Since when have computers not been electric? - mikephimikephi, on 05/24/2008, -3/+27It is absolutely amazing - the lengths at which we will go to satisfy our consumerist culture.
*Side Note: i can't wait to replace my current iPhone with this new version, and then go out on Saturday night mocking people who own iPhone's without GPS - ripple123, on 05/24/2008, -9/+33my computer runs on pie. so there.
- diggcommentguy, on 05/24/2008, -13/+34Who knows what them hipsters and their new-fangled electric computers could be up to!
- dn11, on 05/24/2008, -3/+23the description is meant to set the products apart from Apples new Difference Engine based iPods
- bosox3125, on 05/24/2008, -5/+23define: computers - the term "computer", in use from the mid 17th century, literally meant "one who computes": a person performing mathematical calculations.
source: wikipedia - thetron, on 05/24/2008, -3/+17Let me know when Apple gets Pizza delivered to it's office. So I can make a digg post!
- netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -0/+11it would make sense if you wanted a laptop that could burn your legs off faster than any other laptop...err notebook
- paulishuku, on 05/24/2008, -2/+13Lol. Nicely placed.
- zydeco, on 05/24/2008, -4/+14Apple's stock is up 1800% in the last 5 years. I'd say that's worth something.
- foofightrs777, on 05/24/2008, -0/+10Well, I'll throw a wiki link in here too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient mechanical calculator (also described as the first "mechanical computer"[1][2]) designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was discovered in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, in 1900. Subsequent investigation, particularly in 2006, dated it to about 150-100 BC, and hypothesised that it was on board a ship that sank en route from the Greek island of Rhodes to Rome, perhaps as part of an official loot. Technological artifacts of similar complexity did not reappear until a thousand years later.[3] - tama00, on 05/24/2008, -1/+11electric computer is the new hip name for illegal drugs smuggling
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -10/+20WHO CARES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This shouldn't even be news. - eliot2000, on 05/24/2008, -1/+11it's their new iOcean Containers.
- lispy, on 05/24/2008, -1/+10You know, noone is forcing you. It's all in your mind, don't obey the ads and the hype, it just won't make your life better. Not this time and not in the future. Just relax.
- opiniastrous, on 05/24/2008, -3/+11I'd agree that the amount of speculation about Apple products is ridiculous, but I actually think this is pretty interesting. Not only does the evidence seem to point to the release of the iPhone 2, but it's interesting just to know that there are companies that do things like scour port shipments for 'competitive intelligence'.
- cthellis, on 05/24/2008, -5/+13They're all rebranded Zunes!
- hollowex, on 05/24/2008, -8/+16They're to hold Steve Jobs' ego.
- foofightrs777, on 05/24/2008, -0/+7Or perhaps he actually knew the info, hence knew what to look up. And then he posted wiki as a source to back up his claim. That would be too logical though, right? I'm sure he just read all of wikipedia until he found something useful.
- neumero4te, on 05/24/2008, -1/+8a slide rule is a computer and battleships had big mechanical computers used to compute firing solutions way before these fancy 'electric computers'.
- meeek76, on 05/24/2008, -2/+9Turing machines are mechanical computers.
- fallenidol, on 05/24/2008, -20/+26who gives a *****?
- BingoPower, on 05/24/2008, -1/+7The scary thing is that you were able to reproduce.
- HonoredMule, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Even if I were an Apple fan, I don't see how I could get worked up over a shipping manifest for unknown contents near the time we already know (or have high confidence that) a 3G iPhone will be released. So the shipment is probably the new iPhone--so what? Unless I were planning a REAL act of piracy, I can't see myself caring.
- dext3r, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6You're not *forced* into anything...
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6The good thing about this is that the iPhone 1.0 will (more than likely) receive a price cut, making it more affordable for people in other countries where 3G is just in our dreams.
- joemofo214, on 05/24/2008, -6/+11could just be a whole bunch of slaves from china and india to work at the apple store. outsourcing, within the country
- cappa1983, on 05/24/2008, -12/+17Seriously folks, NO company is worth this much attention by its customer base.
- Startemus, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6Wait a sec... Are you guys serious? ...cause I wasn't.
- LaweranceOak, on 05/24/2008, -3/+7This has something to do with the conclusion of Lost.
- furto, on 05/24/2008, -7/+11I hope that all the fan boy hype is over Apple re-stocking packing foam and bubble wrap.
- newbill123, on 05/24/2008, -5/+9Jeez, can't people spell "eclectic" right anymore?
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -1/+5Everyone else is just lazy. That's why posting a duggmirror link can get dugg up.
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4Another type of non-electric computer:
The E6B Flight Computer, also known as the "whiz wheel", is a form of circular slide rule used in aviation. They are mostly used in flight training, but many professional and even airline pilots will still carry and use their E6Bs. E6Bs are used during flight planning (on the ground before takeoff) to aid in calculating fuel burn, wind correction, time en route, and other items. In the air, the E6B can be used to calculate ground speed as well. The back is designed for wind correction calculations, i.e., determining how much the wind is affecting your speed and course.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E6B - cappa1983, on 05/24/2008, -2/+6Zydeco, that IS something to watch for, again, my comment referred to the "mysterious ocean containers" not the overall growth of the company! I hope that clears up things a bit.
- netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -1/+5at least there is SOMETHING new on the front page...we already get like half the stories we used to...
- kenij, on 05/24/2008, -1/+5Mine runs with Wine.
- johnpaul191, on 05/25/2008, -1/+4Well, it implies some new product will be "available today" as opposed to "order today". For example, have you ever heard when something like a new iMac is announced at some Apple event and they say it will be available in two weeks? That means the machines are really not ready yet, and those first waves of customers that pre-order are really going to be getting their computer sent from the assembly plat overseas via FedEx. About the same time Apple will start loading shipping containers, but it takes a little while for those to make it to the US. That comes up in quarterly earnings because Apple pays for that shipping, and it costs them a heck of a lot more to FedEx you an iMac from some other country that one of their many US distro points. It's a big win if Apple can have the products already here, and spread out in stores, on the day they announce it.
188 shipping containers would be a decent amount of anything Apple makes.... but if it's iPhones or iPods, then that's a whole lot. It's also possible those containers are just a normal restock of existing Apple products. The most recent quarterly results were pretty impressive. Apple laptops are selling REALLY well. -
