Apple takes delivery of 188 mysterious ocean containers
apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com — “The fact that they are importing millions of units, combined with dwindling stocks of the first generation of iPhones, ” persuades Peterson that these “electric computers” are, in fact, the 3G iPhones Apple is expected to release in a matter of weeks.

- rpgmaker, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6The good thing about this is that the iPhone 1.0 will (more than likely) receive a price cut, making it more affordable for people in other countries where 3G is just in our dreams.

- LegalizeGanja, on 05/24/2008, -15/+11Dude quit whining about what you think the site should be and look at one of the many sites that are actually dedicated to that kind of stuff. That's what I do. It's not that hard to look at Digg AND a tech site.
- Lyph5, on 05/24/2008, -7/+6The problem is that when it started, Digg was supposed to be a tech site. That'd be like if slashdot decided to just cover celebrity gossip all of a sudden.
- migitalwarfare, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1regardless of what digg started as, thats not what it currently is. it's one thing if there are a few people controlling content, but when you make it a user driven site, the site bends to its users' will. instead of bitching about change, you might want to go out and yell at those damn kids to get off your lawn.
- streak, on 05/24/2008, -3/+4Actually, it is very hard to look at digg, when this kind of cr@p speculation is plastered all over it.

- LightSpeed4, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Nothing says these are full of iPhones and nothing else... or *any* iPhones for that matter. Actually, if iPhones are really out of stock everywhere, it could just be more of the current models. The article fails to mention how the current iPhone had been labelled when it was coming in, and the site tracking shipping containers has been doing it for two years. "electric computer" could be a generic Apple name now that they realized people are tracking their containers and can see how many are "desktop computers" as opposed to something else.
Why would Ingram Micro get iPhones? Apple only sells iPhones through AT&T and its own Apple Stores? Why would they ship to a "big box distributor" such as Ingram Micro?
Do we really think that 3G iPhones have been landing since mid-March? Apple regularly has to airfreight its first shipments of product to the US (and has described the procedure). Why would Apple be so ahead of the curve this time?

- meeek76, on 05/24/2008, -2/+9Turing machines are mechanical computers.
- lostarchitect, on 05/24/2008, -1/+1not necessarily.
- cypherz, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3If by mechanical, you mean "electric but without modern solid state circuitry" then yes. (IIRC) In the original thought experiment, Alan Turing, proposed an (electric) device composed of 4 components,
1) a tape,
2) a tape head,
3) a table of instructions,
4) a state register to store the state of operations in the machine.
It would be able to simulate any type of computing device. Sort of, computing reduced to it's least requirements.
- neumero4te, on 05/24/2008, -1/+8a slide rule is a computer and battleships had big mechanical computers used to compute firing solutions way before these fancy 'electric computers'.
- foofightrs777, on 05/24/2008, -0/+10Well, I'll throw a wiki link in here too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient mechanical calculator (also described as the first "mechanical computer"[1][2]) designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was discovered in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, in 1900. Subsequent investigation, particularly in 2006, dated it to about 150-100 BC, and hypothesised that it was on board a ship that sank en route from the Greek island of Rhodes to Rome, perhaps as part of an official loot. Technological artifacts of similar complexity did not reappear until a thousand years later.[3]- drizzlelicious, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Ok, I was just about to link to the exact same article when I clicked reply
- goliathlyricist, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4Another type of non-electric computer:
The E6B Flight Computer, also known as the "whiz wheel", is a form of circular slide rule used in aviation. They are mostly used in flight training, but many professional and even airline pilots will still carry and use their E6Bs. E6Bs are used during flight planning (on the ground before takeoff) to aid in calculating fuel burn, wind correction, time en route, and other items. In the air, the E6B can be used to calculate ground speed as well. The back is designed for wind correction calculations, i.e., determining how much the wind is affecting your speed and course.

Jesus, you Mac worshipers sure aren't doing anything to prevent the negative stereotypes. Stalking shipment containers, and when some Chinese guy who barely knows English describes the item as 'electric computer', you bust a nut in your pants because that hasn't been used before. - mikephimikephi, on 05/24/2008, -3/+27It is absolutely amazing - the lengths at which we will go to satisfy our consumerist culture.
*Side Note: i can't wait to replace my current iPhone with this new version, and then go out on Saturday night mocking people who own iPhone's without GPS - TrickyTree, on 05/24/2008, -4/+58Apple takes delivery of 188 containers of obvious.

- opiniastrous, on 05/24/2008, -3/+11I'd agree that the amount of speculation about Apple products is ridiculous, but I actually think this is pretty interesting. Not only does the evidence seem to point to the release of the iPhone 2, but it's interesting just to know that there are companies that do things like scour port shipments for 'competitive intelligence'.
- DaveClarkOne, on 05/25/2008, -1/+3Given that the Apple stock sank on Thursday amidst speculation there was a delay re: iPhone shipments, this write-up IS news dude. If you don't find the story relevant, why are you taking the time to reply --is what YOU find relevant more important?
- OSuX, on 05/24/2008, -16/+6You mean Apple computers come from Asia???? They really aren't forged in a top secret lava pit underneath Apple headquarters??? PCs come from Asia!!! OMG APPLES COME FROM THE SAME COMPANIES THAT PCs COME FROM????? OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!

- cappa1983, on 05/24/2008, -2/+6Zydeco, that IS something to watch for, again, my comment referred to the "mysterious ocean containers" not the overall growth of the company! I hope that clears up things a bit.

- itsthebrod, on 05/24/2008, -15/+10Just the fact that stories like this get promoted to the front page proves that Apple fans on Digg are some of the moronic, gullible, and idiotically brand-loyal people around. Acting like a corporation, whom has the single goal of getting as much of your money as possible, is your best friend is mind boggling. Anyone who dugg this seriously needs to reevaluate their life.

- kreatre2007, on 05/24/2008, -2/+5The most interesting thing about this is how we watch Apple so closely that when the slightest thing happens that is out of the ordinary, we all get worked up. I love reading about the rumors but, I also love being surprised. I don't think we should read too much into this. Just let Steve surprise you what that "one more thing...".

funny note, a guy asked me to buy him an iphone at the store he had cash and I had a credit card. They would not take cash for the phone. I was in line getting ipods for my grandaughters for christmas. What do you think I did?
I did it.- BingoPower, on 05/24/2008, -1/+7The scary thing is that you were able to reproduce.
- KenYN, on 05/24/2008, -1/+4Assuming the numbers in the article are correct (although it sounds awfully like a press release for the ImportGenius company) that would be 7.5 million units, or around three billion dollars-worth of kit. Whatever happened to Just-In-Time shipping? I call *****.
- LaweranceOak, on 05/24/2008, -3/+7This has something to do with the conclusion of Lost.
- HonoredMule, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Even if I were an Apple fan, I don't see how I could get worked up over a shipping manifest for unknown contents near the time we already know (or have high confidence that) a 3G iPhone will be released. So the shipment is probably the new iPhone--so what? Unless I were planning a REAL act of piracy, I can't see myself caring.
- johnpaul191, on 05/25/2008, -1/+4Well, it implies some new product will be "available today" as opposed to "order today". For example, have you ever heard when something like a new iMac is announced at some Apple event and they say it will be available in two weeks? That means the machines are really not ready yet, and those first waves of customers that pre-order are really going to be getting their computer sent from the assembly plat overseas via FedEx. About the same time Apple will start loading shipping containers, but it takes a little while for those to make it to the US. That comes up in quarterly earnings because Apple pays for that shipping, and it costs them a heck of a lot more to FedEx you an iMac from some other country that one of their many US distro points. It's a big win if Apple can have the products already here, and spread out in stores, on the day they announce it.
188 shipping containers would be a decent amount of anything Apple makes.... but if it's iPhones or iPods, then that's a whole lot. It's also possible those containers are just a normal restock of existing Apple products. The most recent quarterly results were pretty impressive. Apple laptops are selling REALLY well.

- aserer511, on 05/24/2008, -3/+2hn, why is apple receiving them, and not end-retailers? Well does Apple do domestic assembly? I heard they do.
- stasis88, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3dumbass, like they are going to send a huge ship container to a retailer? how many do you think are in one of those? im guessing more then one retailer would receive, moron.
- Drizzit, on 05/24/2008, -3/+2If they're shipping in 7.5 million units then it can make some sense only if they intended to allow the phone on other carriers. Not every customer will dump their 1g phone and pony up another 500 for the 2g phone.
I have my suspicions, but it could get me fired so I'll just stay quiet. (If they were true. I'd kinda like to be making money to buy the 2g phone so I'll just keep them to myself)- johnpaul191, on 05/25/2008, -0/+3Nothing says these are full of iPhones and nothing else... or *any* iPhones for that matter.
