- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A busines is a success if it makes money.
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Synd, you can't go to the store and buy a yahoo product either, but it's on the list.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2"Can you goto a store and buy a Google product?"
yes: http://googlestore.com/ - Jord4n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh boy, Microsoft is still ranking 34th? I hope that they made it to that position because of the 360...
Where is Google? I don't mean to sound like another Google-drone, but "...have scored big by using technology, design, or clever marketing to build intense customer loyalty" sounds like some of the ways I would describe Google - tanveer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4what's up with BusinessWeek's non-stop Jobs & Apple promoting acticles...don't they ever get tired of it?
- astaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"with Apple taking the lead in first place."
As opposed to it taking the lead in second? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6i'd say apple has been the top performing tech company for 4 years now.. (just an opinion)
i find it a bit strange that yahoo! is listed at #14, while google isnt listed at all.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wrong. BusinessWeek's forumla is much more complex than "Stock trend." Google isn't there because they aren't performing as well as Apple on a variety of metrics. You can read more about the formula on bw.com.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This isn't just technology, otherwise I'm sure Google would be on it (& Apple still be number one). Seems a little broad to me. They're comparing Home Depot to Microsoft...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure 85% market share is a "nitch" [sic]. Furthermore, the Mac's market share has been growing dramatically faster than the overall PC industry.
- FatHed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is based on stock performance, and I'm pretty sure no one really understands why a stock goes up when it should go down, or vice-versa. If someone new that much about the stock market, they could be richer than gates. Even that article will affect the stock prices. They explain their methodology, so at least you can look at how the top 50 are generated.
- clldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally people are recognising Apple's lead. Although the number of Mac users still pale in comparison to Microsoft users, the number of Mac users has been increasing. Hope more people will see the benefits in Mac. Haha.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2last year apple was listed at #14..
- synd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does this actually surprise anyone?
- dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Personally, Apple deserves to be at the top. What other company has been consistently running on all cylinders for the past four years?
- bjtitus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple's stock has been going down recently, I mean they did have a major increase this year, but it's been dropping in the last few months.
- Jord4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Synd: "Can you goto a store and buy a Google product?"
Google is a business as much as any of these companies, whether it is virtual or not. It still makes ( a large amount) of money.
By the way, http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=GOOG buy all the "Google Product" you want Synd. - skylog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i am confused as how they came up with these rankings. i, like you, suspect stock performance plays some role in this list, but if so, how can intel be there? microsoft? they have been in the same trading range for years. i suppose i am blind, but do they actually state what these rankings mean and how they devised the list?
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best Buy, Yahoo, Apple, hmm makes you wonder who's filling who's pockets eh?
- WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yes, every place has a lead, I for one am the lead 24th employee of my company.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1obviously the guy who wrote this doesn't read digg...but then again, would it even matter? the settlement will be put off for years now that apple has the money to tie it up in legal limbo. Not to mention it would be wise to settle out of court in a very non-public manner. So it should have no effect on their ranking either way.
- lmlloyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, Bob Iger is in charge of Pixar now. Even before that it was John Lasseter who was really in charge of Pixar. He told Jobs long ago to keep his nose out of Pixar, or he would quit and take his people with him.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good sign, thats alot of high tech companies in there. Tech turnaround is happening!
- Jord4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if it is comparing ALL businesses, I think Google should have made it in the top 50.
They score on "...have scored big by using technology, design, or clever marketing to build intense customer loyalty"
I think AdSense is a pretty "clever marketing" AdSense has even found its way to Digg. -->
Not to mention that Google has plenty of "intense customer loyalty" to go around, speaking of which, Best Buy (Ranked 19th) might consider taking out a Customer Loyalty loan from Google... - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Within the last 3 months, Google went through a little bit of a stock drop for the first time in a while. It appears like the trend died down and they'll be going up soon, but thats likely the reason why they aren't included. It isn't really "business" unless you're making money.
Heres a graph: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=GOOG&t=3m&l=on&z=l&q=l&c= - Goya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Probably an off-topic thought here;
I find it somewhat ironic that a company can get tore up over legal issues about breaking a contract, and then within (im guessing) 24 hours take 1st in a businessweek poll.
Obviously the poll and who runs it could be questioned. But I wonder if this speaks to a larger message of what the public is willing to take. There are strong arguements all around supporting what apple does and against it. but I wonder if the lines of business ethics being blurred on both ends? Basically I ask will it become more 'acceptable' for companies to stretch laws if the public is happy?
Just a question for us all... - goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google isn't on the list because Business Week only looked at stocks on the S&P 500, and Google isn't one of them. S&P recently announced it will add Google to the index, but that won't happen until March 31.
This is all from the Business Week article. You can read the methodology here: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_14/b3978474.htm - kunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2apple is freakin awesome and steve jobs is in charge of pixar too, i want to work with this guy
- blindmonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ philgross,
Google has been public since 2004. - philgross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My guess is that Google hasn't been a public company long enough to be included (less than a year).
- DtectiveGFriday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hell yeah.
Stick it to the Microsoft. - YankInOz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I find it interesting that people need to denigrate success. Tell me how wonderful it is to own a computer that is constantly giving you problems and to trust a company that consistantly breaks its promises and calls that a slip date.
Apple is a company that owes its success to its computers, software and ancillary hardware, such as the iPod. Just because it doesn't work for you, as in - you don't like it because it is successful and you can't play, doesn't mean it is "bad" - it just means that they have figured out something you missed. I think what many don't get it that the iPod's primary purpose it to introduce mainstream computer users to the ease of use of Apple products. And it is working.
Am I an Apple user? Of course. As Tom Clancy said, "Why ask someone what computer they have? If they have a Mac, they will brag for hours. If they don't, they will be too embarassed to discuss it."
Been using Macs - good or bad - since 1984 and Apple Computers prior to that. Worked with a team in Hawaii on a portion of the Windoze 95 fiasco that wouldn't run on a DOS box - we worked on the code on Macs and then ported it over. Yep, Windoze is the way to go.
Oh, right V.I.S.T.A. - I almost forgot - and so has Microsoft. 60% re-write. How embarassing. - synd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4iPod*
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The reason? The iPod. Not the computer. Apple found a nitch with consumer electronic devices.
- synd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Can you goto a store and buy a Google product?
- WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Haven't we all had our fill of all the Apple masturbation?
- meehawl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Halliburton is #7 on the list. Apple is in good company.
- stisev, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Lame. Google isn't even on there
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Yeah, because of the Ipod not because of the Mac.

What is Digg?
