- therippa, on 02/04/2009, -2/+39The AT&T 3G coverage in SF is so ***** that the only difference between my first-gen and second-gen iPhone is at least the first-gen stayed on the edge network and make calls somewhat reliably, while the second-gen stays on 3G at one bar and drops calls left and right
- bombula, on 02/04/2009, -4/+36The iPhone is nifty, but it really doesn't run as claimed. Not a surprise, but not cool to mislead with false advertising either. It's one of those things that would be just incredibly cool if it really lived up to your expectations...but it doesn't, and so it stings all the more.
It's almost certainly AT&T's problem more than the phone itself though. The US is 10 - 15 years behind other developed countries in terms of its wireless phone performance. - inactive, on 02/04/2009, -2/+30I have intermittent problems with 3G on my Blackberry Bold as well. I tend to believe its AT&T's not quite ready for prime time 3G network that is to blame.
- djruden, on 02/04/2009, -1/+27Next thing you know companies will get away with advertising "unlimited bandwidth" when there is actually cap on it.
- supersteve, on 02/04/2009, -1/+25someone needs to sue ROGERS in canada
- bigdoof, on 02/04/2009, -1/+22Stop being an apologist. They advertise a certain throughput with a certain coverage area, and when they can't deliver, it's a problem. Just because *you* could care less about how fast you get your ESPN feeds doesn't mean a thing.
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -3/+20I for one am shocked that two huge corporations would lie to consumers. This is pretty much unprecedented in American history.
- therippa, on 02/04/2009, -0/+17That defeats the purpose of buying a 3G
- thetanman, on 02/04/2009, -0/+14I don't even use the phone function that often and I've noticed several dropped calls lately, and I live in Dallas, not too many miles from AT&T's new headquarters. WTF.
- peznex, on 02/04/2009, -2/+14It is AT&T, not Apple. My 3G is slow during the day, but around 2am, it speeds up ten times. It's much faster in other cities I travel to. It is also faster depending on what part of the city I am in.
- dublea2, on 02/04/2009, -0/+12Finally! I've always complained about so called 3G coverage and speeds on AT&T network. I've tested similar devices, coverage, download and upload speed, and have always found that CDMA 3G always had more coverage and better speed.

"i have to turn 3G off in order to even get a wireless signal, even if I'm outside standing in the middle of the street. almost everywhere, 3G coverage is spotty, and if you leave 3G turned on in an area with no 3G service, the iphone will just burn through the battery searching for a 3G signal and say "No Service" even though there is edge."

at least google slaps the beta tag on something that isn't ready for primetime. - teh_spazz, on 02/04/2009, -0/+10I dont know about you, but the second I switched from the iPhone 3G to my Bold, I never experienced any problems.
I get better reception than my roommates (who both own iPhone 3Gs) anywhere in our apartment! - grbruner, on 02/04/2009, -1/+10Just in case the article made you weary of AT&T and the iPhone... Verizon is right there for you.

Perfect ad. placement. - jftitan, on 02/04/2009, -3/+12you win the stupid dumbass award. Now please, sit in the corner.
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -3/+12you could always sue for a companiy misleading customers to get them to buy an item under false pretenses.
Truth in advertising has been around for quite some time. - haydesigner, on 02/04/2009, -1/+9"payed"
Sigh. - Myztry, on 02/04/2009, -1/+9Australia doesn't have those issues. But then we have at least 5 3G providers that the iPhone can utilize.
(Telstra, Optus, Virgin, vodaphone, hutchinson (3 mobile))
Perhaps the USA should outlaw specified providers to provide a competitive incentive to make the network work. - daywalker2676, on 02/04/2009, -1/+8I live in south san francisco. my problem is that although my home is within AT&T's 3G service map, i have to turn 3G off in order to even get a wireless signal, even if I'm outside standing in the middle of the street. almost everywhere, 3G coverage is spotty, and if you leave 3G turned on in an area with no 3G service, the iphone will just burn through the battery searching for a 3G signal and say "No Service" even though there is edge. granted it's not like that everywhere, but quite a few areas have this problem. this happens with all four iphone 3Gs in my family.
As for the misleading commercials, web browsing isn't even one third as fast as it appears to be in the commercials. those commercials show 3G browsing to be faster than a real iphone over wifi with my 16mb comcast connection. i've learned to live with these problems and just seek out a wifi hot spot whenever i want to surf, but the real life experience is nothing like the commercials. every time i see an iphone or AT&T commercial that shows how fast the download speed is or how there are more bars in more places, i always think to myself, "I can't believe these companies getting away with such lies." - iChopPryde, on 02/04/2009, -0/+7I 2nd that!
- phoomp, on 02/04/2009, -2/+9It may be AT&T that's slow, but it was Apple who suggested in it's ads that 3G would be much faster than it really is.
- dolbinau, on 02/04/2009, -0/+6Have you used the Optus 3G Network with an iPhone lately? It's horrible.
- pentiumii, on 02/04/2009, -2/+8first off your just stupid
now on to my real point
First off the iphone has had 3g problem in past with 3g and before u say it at&t fault
then y did apple release 2 updates to fix the problem a few months back
now here a good question
if some 1 a blackberry or htc on at&t network buy an iphone but has trouble getting 3g but has no trouble with there older blackberry or htc
then how can this be just at&t fault and y would apple need to releases firmware updates just for issues with connecting to 3g
this is a combination of both at&t network and apple hardware
at&t 3g networks sucks that there is no doubt but apple poor choice and chipset it used for the iphone is probable just as much to blame
so can the ati american ***** this is a real issues when apple is trying to get corporate people who actually use there phone to do thing other then getting there email and texting this is a real issues for them to have poor service and constant lost of connection
hell 2 people i know with iphone had to go back to there older blackberry just for this very reason
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -1/+7This description is so damn annoying... Now I have to visit the presumably ad filled website just to read the story... I won't do it god dammit.
- Chadatron, on 02/04/2009, -0/+6I have done untechnical speed tests between BB Bold and 3G iphone here in the uk and the Bold loads quicker 9/10 times. Both on the same network so no differences there.
- Myztry, on 02/04/2009, -0/+5Mines 70Gig over adsl2 raw (no telco phone - just voip @ $1 month), and keeps going up automatically (Exetel)
EDIT: 96Gig. Hard to keep track. Signed up at 40Gig I think. - t0ny, on 02/04/2009, -1/+6Well he is right. Just put your iPhone into airplane mode and no more dropped calls! Simple as that.
- manicleek, on 02/04/2009, -0/+5She didn't win, they settled out of court because McDonalds didn't want the publicity that would go with court, and appeals etc...
- lancedice, on 02/04/2009, -1/+6I'd rather sue GE for me stubbing my toe when my lightbulb burnt out.
- imronburgundy83, on 02/04/2009, -0/+4Well timed Verizon, well timed.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/04/2009, -3/+7AT&T is the worst network and service of any cell provider i've ever used (and i've used every major one) Its not Apple thats at fault, its the ***** network their products have to run on.
AT&T is the #1 and ONLY reason why i haven't bought an iphone yet. My buddy ditched his Verizon smart phone for an iPhone and his dropped calls, and unexplainable network screw ups increased exponentially once he got on AT&T. - electrifried, on 02/04/2009, -0/+4Yeah australian mobile broadband sucks. Actually, compared to other developed countries, Australia's entire internet system sucks.
- darkecho, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4As someone stated before. Apple has released a few updates related to 3g connectivity. So it could easily be a combination of the network and the phone.
- t0ny, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4I think the problem is that its not as fast as it looks on tv.
- nofx1510, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4Damn it feels good to be on Verizon with my storm....CDMA *****
- houndeyex, on 02/04/2009, -3/+6lol, Australia... don't you guys accept a 25 gigs a month bandwidth cap? That's ridiculous.
- Cander, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Yes lets do forget that lawsuit as it was a totally valid lawsuit. McDonalds had been previously warned about their coffee which was always too hot.
- newwatch51, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4Apple said that it would be faster. It isn't. That's why it's false advertising.
- ShArKSe7eN, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4So, if AT&T's network is to blame, why are they all suing Apple?
- NsXLA, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Haaaaaa HA! Please, you iPhone fanboys dont even ***** think of switching to Sprint!
No need to over crowd the elite sprint 3g network! What good is iphone really without 3g coverage? - suckers! - DevilInPgh, on 02/04/2009, -3/+6So, speed difference in 3G with iPhone vs. Blackberry?
- electrifried, on 02/04/2009, -0/+3Yep my friend is on Optus and took us 10 mins to load google maps on her iphone
- mlerner, on 02/04/2009, -1/+3What's with the double standard? All of these cell phone manufactures claim even faster speed when they come out with a 'cool' new phone.
- imronburgundy83, on 02/04/2009, -0/+22am? Was this a scientific experiment you conducted?
- fandyboy, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2In London at the moment on the O2 3G network, all I'm having is constant dropouts (safari has lost network connection), dropped calls and generally lots of frustration.
Tried calling the service department and they hung up on me...twice....or it could have been the call being dropped.
Pfft. - newwatch51, on 02/04/2009, -1/+3That's different. Apple didn't tell you that the Macbook would have fast browsing.
- TrancePhreak, on 02/04/2009, -1/+3Tell that to the EU.
- HisShadow, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2God, what a pathetic collection of whiners live in the USA.
- Dubbsacc, on 02/04/2009, -0/+2@daywalker2676
So the iPhone 3G doesn't switch to Edge when the 3G signal drops? That's pretty messed up. -
