- Chewie67, on 03/18/2008, -12/+9314% of the US market share is nice.
What really shocked me, however, was 25% of the dollars spent in February.
That means one out of every four dollars spent on computers in February went to Apple, Inc.. That's HUGE. - mentor972, on 03/18/2008, -9/+61Let the PC vs. Mac Fanboy comment bashing begin...
- borez, on 03/18/2008, -19/+55Yeah and, from a Mac engineers perspective, the bigger they become the worse the build quality, support and failure rate becomes. I've a client who's had to have his macbook pro repaired 6 times in as many months, unheard of with a Mac 6 years ago.
- shark72, on 03/18/2008, -22/+57Just for point of comparison: whether you like it, hate it, or simply don't care, the Zune is approaching 14% of MP3 player sales. Yet the popular consensus among Apple fans on Digg is that it's a sales failure.
- kelly, on 03/18/2008, -3/+34If they hit 5% worldwide share... that is HUGE! They were nearly 1.2% worldwide only a couple years ago.
- dchaosdx, on 03/18/2008, -6/+35maybe it has something to do with the fact that 6 weeks ago they put apple stores inside 40% of the best buy's in the country?
- vacax, on 03/18/2008, -23/+50Hey everyone, let's bring our Macbooks to Starbucks and read our eNovels!
- inactive, on 03/18/2008, -21/+45My favorite quote: "Apple saw particular strength in notebook systems, which rose 64 percent in units and 67 percent in revenues, suggesting strong sell-through of the company's new MacBook Air, noted Hargreaves. Macbook Air sales appear to be additive to total sales, rather than replacing Macbook Pro sales," he said. "We believe a new set of corporate customers make up a meaningful portion of MacBook Air buyers."
And every Windows geek in the universe said it would fail. - m1ss1ontomars, on 03/18/2008, -4/+20Look, we Mac fan(boy)s just have to admit that our preferred hardware and/or software is sometimes more expensive, and for people who love Windows there's not much reason to switch, seeing as they don't need Mac OS X. The last time I checked only the Mac Pro was cheaper than a comparable PC.
- m1ss1ontomars, on 03/18/2008, -0/+16As well as plenty of Mac geeks and market analysts. So everyone was wrong, except Apple, apparently.
- Kolenka, on 03/18/2008, -0/+16That is from March 2007. Old and irrelevant at this point with the Zune 2.0
I would love to see some more recent numbers, and if the 14% is in the HDD-region of the market, or the MP3 market in general. - gcnaddict, on 03/18/2008, -8/+23"Ya, I can't run OS X on a PC."
Because APPLE limited the OS! That's *Apple's* fault. Hack OSX and install it onto a PC (or install *nix or Windows). PCs aren't OS-limited. Apple is hardware-limited. - blate, on 03/18/2008, -21/+36They'd probably make more if their advertising wasn't so smug and annoying
- MidnightRealism, on 03/18/2008, -9/+23You're getting swindled if you pay more for a PC--even a pre-built--than a comparable Apple. Where are you shopping?
- kenplaysviola, on 03/18/2008, -1/+14I work in a hybrid Windows/Mac/Linux environment. I still can't get my Mac with Leopard 10.5.2 to work properly in a Windows Active Directory environment, specifically with something as simple as file sharing. However, my Linux computers work fine. My problem is escalated to the highest tech support at Apple and this has been going on since November 2007. They still don't know what is going on with my problem.
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -5/+18I'm a mac geek, and I still said it would fail. I'm willing to admit when I was wrong.
- MidnightRealism, on 03/18/2008, -2/+14Congratulations on defeating yourself by attaching a pointless political rider, moron.
- FlyinWhee, on 03/18/2008, -7/+19From what I understand, this doesn't include "clones" and the sale of computer parts - So basically anybody not buying a HP, Compaq, Dell, Acer, etc. machine, doesn't count?
That's what I understand, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. - stix213, on 03/18/2008, -6/+18As usual, retail PC sales figures never include custom built machines, like the thousands and thousands of smaller computer stores. Anyone who cares about what is inside their machine and has any skill either assembles it themselves or has a smaller shop build it from parts they choose.
- JasonCox, on 03/18/2008, -5/+16Well congrats to Apple. This is great news for Microsoft too because the #1 purchaser of the boxed versions of Windows Vista are, get this, Mac users.
- spitsnaugle, on 03/18/2008, -2/+13I am not any sort of a fanboy, but I am a multiple apple computer (and a pc) owner. I thought this would fail undoubtedly, but once I started seeing a large number of professors carrying it around, my perspective quickly changed.
- gcnaddict, on 03/18/2008, -5/+15Very true. The build quality of the software will also go down partly because engineers will be stretched thin in order to design a broader spectrum of software, and partly because of the increase in attacks on Apple's software. 14% market share means a hybrid Win/Mac worm is now a viable modus impetus.
- jemka, on 03/18/2008, -3/+13Research? Technical terms such as "probably" avoid the need for research.
- kipmartin, on 03/18/2008, -4/+14hey everyone, lets bring our Dell Notebooks to ChucE Cheese's and work on spreadsheets and that PowerPoint presentation Im giving on Monday morning.
- kipmartin, on 03/18/2008, -4/+13dont you have a virus to deal with?
- spitsnaugle, on 03/18/2008, -4/+13Do not look at it as Apple vs PC, but Apple vs every other brand individually. 14% is quite large from that perspective.
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 03/18/2008, -68/+77They don't have 14% market share, its 14% of sales within the month of February. And they have such a high percentage of dollars because they overcharge on all their hardware compared to other vendors.
/waits for the bury - stellarceltic, on 03/18/2008, -1/+9buried for "dugged down"
- borez, on 03/18/2008, -1/+9Firstly... he's a client, not a friend. Second I repair hundreds of macs so I'm in kind of in a better position to comment and third: I didn't mention PC's in my comment , you just presumed I was running the old Mac vs PC argument...I wasn't and wasn't even thinking about it to be honest.
- Urkel, on 03/18/2008, -2/+10It's always weird to see so many people take pride in things like marketshare or profits like it was a personal accomplishment. I bought a turkey sub at Quizno's yesterday. If I'd go high-fiving my coworkers because I'm contributing to help Quiznos defeat Subway then they'd call me a putz. But if I start screaming "the profits that we will never see are up, baby!" then somehow it's considered acceptable?
We're consumers and we're supposed to be looking out for ourselves, not corporate marketshare. The idea that there is such a high profit margin should make us demand either higher quality machines (like we got a decade ago) or lower prices. But instead we slap each other on the butts and smile as we tell people that AppleCare is mandatory because something is bound to happen to that Mac in 3 years. - dlowder, on 03/18/2008, -2/+10It's a free market -- Apple will know they are charging too much when people stop buying. If people are still buying, then the price is right for THEM (even if it's too much for you....)
- caerwyn, on 03/18/2008, -0/+8Some people take themselves seriously as people get stuff done, rather than simply "computer users". The computer is just another tool for the job, and the MacBook Air is the appropriate tool for some situations. You may think it's a gimmick, fine, but that's because it's not the appropriate tool for your use- which doesn't have any bearing on anyone else.
- Kurto2021, on 03/18/2008, -1/+9that isn't true either. There are prebuilt computers that you can't build for the same price they sell them. Sure you can do it if you pirate the software but some people would prefer to not pirate.
- stix213, on 03/18/2008, -0/+8Ahh the classic arrogant Mac fanboy.... Reminds me why I ditched my Crapintosh LCIII back in the day and never looked back.
- rodrigo74, on 03/18/2008, -0/+7'kay. But if you forget the clipart CD again, I'll kill you.
- inactive, on 03/18/2008, -9/+16The Mac Fanboys seem to think this is a good thing. Wait until everyone has a mac. You're going to hate all the noobs, and you and your mac won't feel special anymore.
I just got a macbook pro myself, but I still hate the mac fanboys. - NeoCortex, on 03/18/2008, -5/+12There are three or so *large* computer platforms. Mac, Windows, and Linux. It just so happens that Apple is the only one that makes Macs. So they are hardly on an even playing field as the "dozens of computer manufacturers" who are all competing for the group that decided to go with Windows or Linux.
- gazzaDJ, on 03/18/2008, -2/+9Lol, no. Lets take, just for arguements sake the basic iMac, which retails for £799. that gets you a 2GHz C2D, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD and a 20inch monitor. Head over to scan.co.uk, and you can build yourself an equivilent system cheaper.
I cant / havent bothered to find out exactly what processor is in the Mac, as the customisation page just says 2.0GHz C2D. At scan, i just threw together a build for £680 including shipping, which has the following: C2D E8300 (better than the one in the iMac), 2GB Corsair DDR2 800MHz RAM (twice as much as the iMac, and faster), Gigabyte DS3R motherboard, 250GB Western Digital HDD, Antec Sonata 3 and 500W PSU, 20inch LG Monitor, Vista Home Premium, Logitech MX3200 wireless keyboard and mouse combo (wired with the iMac), Belkin Wireless PCI card, 512MB ATI HD3650 PCIe graphics (better than the iMacs).
So, you are left with over £100 ($200) to make it even better. you could go for one or two larger HDD's, a bigger monitor, a better graphics card, faster CPU, theres a hell of a lot you could buy.
You can save yourself an extra £60 by going for a free OS instead of paying for a legit OEM of Vista.
Macs always cheaper, eh? - BossKey, on 03/18/2008, -3/+10WHEN are the basement geeks of the world going to realize that most people on Earth are about as interested in building their own computer as they are in building their own house or car or refrigerator? You could lay out all the parts needed for any product at a 50% discount and most people are still going to say "Look, just sell me a fully assembled, integrated, and tested unit, please so I can do something far, far more interesting with my time."
- brufleth, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6@theutopian
They're often the same panels with different plastic around them. - KSUdesigner, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6Apple has always been heavy on product placement in tv and movies. You just happen to be noticing it more often.
- wellyuk, on 03/18/2008, -0/+6'Real' work? How is writing reports, calculating tax returns, creating presentations etc., all well within the capabilities of the Air, not 'real' work? How many people actually get paid for your definition of real work? Not as many people as who calculate tax returns, write reports, do presentations, I would wager. The Asus EEE is NOT a suitable desktop replacement, the Air is.
- gcnaddict, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7That's what I'm seeing as well.
- d4nie1, on 03/18/2008, -2/+8I think it's more likely that the reason they are now in Best Buys is because their market share has been increasing rather than the other way around.
- Mohonri, on 03/18/2008, -2/+8Also note that this is "retail" sales. That means none of the big businesses count, and online purchases don't count. These numbers are B&M ONLY. How many people on Digg do you think bought a PC or notebook in a B&M store?
- dpchi, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7Actually, my tiBook from 5 years ago had to be repaired 5 times... 3 displays and 2 logic boards.
- MoofTheStoof, on 03/18/2008, -1/+7You're right. I'll never hear anybody say "check out my beast Apple!" ...but not for the reason you're thinking.
- goldpress, on 03/18/2008, -0/+5People that usually use the word "fanboy" are usually just the fanboys of another product. Don't get me wrong, I own nothing but PCs. But as I'm dong a lot of video editing and DVD publishing - and I've used the top of the line software for both PCs and Macs - I'm going to likely be buying a Mac soon. Now go back and consider what you are saying. Your primary other option to being an Apple fanboy is a Microsoft Fanboy. Of the two, I would gladly choose Apple.
- barnacle999, on 03/18/2008, -0/+5Well at least you're all admitting it. Hearing the armchair geeks call it another cube was laughable at the time. Bottom line: if you were as smart as Apple you'd be as successful as Apple ... second-guess them at risk of embarrassment.
- bradleyland, on 03/18/2008, -1/+6Obvious by what basis? You don't own one?
