- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Welcome to Apple, that's the way it is there. Believe it or not it was his obsessive attention to detail that made the iPod what it is. He's no engineer, but he knows what he does and doesn't want, and that's the key to Apple's roll right now.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Apple is regarded as one of the best spenders of R&D, so we'll see what happens on Jan the 9th. This phone is a long time coming, and the proof will be in the quality, or lack of quality in the product. If their recent product history is anything to go by, the iPhone should be cool, and a hit. So I'm holding off on my long awaited new phone (or iPod) purchase until after the event.
- flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Do you guys REALLY think that Apple engineers report directly to the CEO? Do you really think that this is viable in a huge multinational corporation?"
Son, you have no idea. None. - bradspry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10A plan by Apple to keep people from buying a Zune? You must be trolling.
Apple's plan is to do what Apple does best: create great products. They also create a hell of a lot of buzz being very secretive, providing zero guidance on new products. - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Of course, this is a new product in a new market for Apple. It would be silly of Jobs to not be personally involved in the project.
- loriencfau, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yes?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7that's how jobs is. he always does that.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4An Apple Phone, if such a thing exists, could be an entire new field for the company... You bet the CEO is involved. And that's not even taking into account Job's known penchant for micromanaging.
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know one of the reasons I bought a cheap iPod shuffle the other day instead of a higher model to replace my stolen 30GB was to wait for next months announcements.
- firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you speak from your bum.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not a nice phone that works well as a phone but ALSO gives you iPod functionality? Sounds like a nice bonus to me.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EVDO is SLOW !
I its hope not ...
Korea is testing 4G connectivity with 1Gb per/sec !
thats what I want! - flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We have Christmas covered. That's when the leaks start about the phaser.
- dan90251, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well if it's true I hope it's supports Java... I'm currently addicted to Sudoku on my Blackberry
I'm truly hope they market like an ipod and so that I don't need to wait for my contract to expire (may07) so I can upgrade to it with my mobile provider.
Kinda of a bugger really though, I'm hoping to get a Nano for xmas. - plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1File this under "no *****" because everyone (i hope) knows that the key to good mobile software is how it works with computer operating systems. The nicer the phone plays with OSX the more that OSX users will want to buy the phone... if it happens. I stills subscribe that this is just a rumor. Honestly I don't think that Apple needs to be in the handset making business considering how well the iPod is doing as a stand alone product.
- eteyemd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would love an Apple "smartphone". I know several people (me included) who are sick of dealing with MissingSync and PocketMac to try and get the current smartphones to sync well. This would be exactly what I'm looking for. It would be interesting to see if you would be able to download Palm software to it.
- lasvegas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pretty much most of the rumors I have read in the past year or so have come true.
- mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't really care or want this phone to have a ipod built into it. If they could just make a nice phone that works well as a phone then I would buy it.
- Nicolay77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm waiting for a replacement for my P900. I just want a smaller and better looking phone, with more memory (several GB) and almost the same software. The P990 was ***** up with the blackberry-style keyboard, that's just too ugly to me.
The killer feature is this: it doesn't matter how much software it has. The possibility of 3dr parties to develop and release software for it is what made my P900 a killer phone in its time. I use 3rd party software in my phone much much more than any of the default apps. A HP48GX emulator, a gameboy emulator, ebook reader, dictionary, and a super international clock app are the ones I use most.
If Apple provides this in the high end smartphone, they will own the market the same as with the iPods. - DPimp1262, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2it's more fun when you do. Honestly about the phone I hope i'm proven wrong but I really do think it's getting way too much attention for it's own good. Sorry for all the hate though. Apple rumors make me grumpy.

"But how many, like myself will also put off an ipod upgrade to see what the iphone will be."
... which is precisely why Apple has never fed the rumor mills, and has notoriously fought to keep all R&D a secret right up until the official product launch. Preannouncing products keeps existing products unsold in the channel, and that just seems to drive Apple batty.
On a side note, it does seem odd that Apple rarely announces a new product in September/October, in time for the holidays. I guess they figure they can't ramp up new tech fast enough, and everything has to be Just In Time with them. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Apple rumors make me grumpy."
Um, so don't read them? - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What if it is EVDO?
That would be smashing (and expensive) - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1for the smartphone, yeah, video would be very important, although video conferencing may be limited to being in a wifi hotspot at first. ichat integration should be easy. ichat already runs off of the aim protocol. creating a mobile protocol for bonjour isn't beyond apple's capabilities.
i'm personally more interested in the regular phone/ipod mixed phone. i don't need a smartphone, and i'm sure the simpler model will also provide enough MacOS integration to keep me happy.
to be honest, though, anything would be better than this damned razr. - Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A lot of hate for cell phones and Diggnation on Appleinsider forums. What is the average age there 40?
- DPimp1262, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Apple is regarded as one of the best spenders of R&D, so we'll see what happens on Jan the 9th. That is taking into the assumption that apple is even working on the phone in the first place. For how many years has the idea of the iphone been in circulation around the internet? I mean really every day I swear that the speculation of this thing comes rising up and up leading up to some date, usually a keynote, only for steve to come up on that day and talk about something completely different with no mention of an iphone or whatever the internet was circulating. Then for the next 3 weeks afterwards apple just gets ripped on for not releasing that product that they were "obviously" working on and the internet and digg suffers for it.
I mean really with how crazy secretive apple is known to be do you really think this much info about the damn thing would come out? I think I have only seen these sites come out with info that turned out to be correct like one or twice, out of the thousands of articles they pump out about this stuff yearly. Just think about that. - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the killer app for this apple smart phone is the iChat. It needs to be video..not sms. The sidekick and treo and yada yada yada already has sms. If they can create an iChat video feature, then that would be huge....but they need it to be compatible with PCs.
They cannot expect us to buy Macs inorder to take advantage of their cool phone. That would be like keeping the iPod on Mac OS only. It would never have taken off.
So how the hell can iChat work on a PC....if it's intergrated into frontpage? make frontpage a free PC application?
there's a lot of moving parts for this to be successful. at this point, people are happy with their crackberries and treos. - ramcosca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1New market or not, it's still Apple. Apple owes it's life to Jobs, and I don't mean that because he was a co-founder. It's thanks to Jobs' innovation and "Think Different" ideas that helped boost Apple and revive it. Of course... now it's "Think the same but with a few Different things"... oh well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1buried. spam. ***** fanboys are out in full force again.
- DPimp1262, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Oh and to solidify my point let me just throw something at you. See if you can see the difference between what I am going to type and their "source". (ps i'm making this up as I type)
A reliable source has recently come to this news agency with more information about the iphone. From our reliable source the iphone will use trans-flash and come in two sizes of 4 gigs and 8 gigs priced at 249.99 and 399.99 respectively. Both models will use either bluetooth 2.0 or the new 802.11n format that apple has been secretly putting in their most recent lines of intel macs.
The key to the iphone will be it's integration with apple software created specifically for the phone that will sync semelessly with mail, itunes, isync, and iphoto. The sofware will also come with a windows equivilent of each of these software tools.
The phone will have no buttons on the outside opting instead for a full touchscreen display on the front of the device. The phone will also slide sideways or downwards to reveal a second touchscreen display that can either function as the numeric keypad or a keyboard depending on how the phone slides. The software of the phone is a completely custom built solution made to work as a sort of mac os x lite.
The software is designed to allow software developers to have little to no dificulty with creating software for the phone.
The phone will be releaced some time in january and will be available for GSM and CDMA networks at launch. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1eh, maybe. if a new ipod comes out, i'd prolly the new ipod and wait till rev2 of the iphones, seeing as the phone is a new product and may be buggy at launch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0A "smartphone" (a trademark, btw) is a device running Windows Mobile. And it already plays MP3s.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2you're all going to be severly disappointed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Why is everyone obsessed with mentioning Steve Jobs in every article posted about every new product?
Do you guys REALLY think that Apple engineers report directly to the CEO? Do you really think that this is viable in a huge multinational corporation? - SeanClarity, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5All of the hype is reaching a fever pitch. It's got to be a plan by Apple to keep people from purchasing a zune. But how many, like myself will also put off an ipod upgrade to see what the iphone will be.
What is Digg?
Check out the new & improved
