- Audacitor, on 11/07/2007, -1/+34Meh, I have folders here that I'd like to be stacks and folders that I'd like to just open up when I hit them. More like make stacks an optional thing, you know?
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -5/+30If you want to fix stacks create an alias of the folder in question and rename to start with "000." That way, the alias of your folder shows first despite what you have in the folder. For a look at how this work you can go to my flickr page and see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18388816@N06/?donelay ...
As you might have noticed. I brought back the black triangle indicator too. - nato64, on 11/07/2007, -2/+27I like Stacks. They are intuitive and useful, especially to new users. I think everyone was just used to the old way and this simpler way feels wrong. But to someone new, Stacks is very cool and much better than just throwing a folder in the dock and telling the user to Right Click it. It would be great if they had the ability to show nested folders, but it's not like it's inconvenient to just click on the folder and navigate the finder. So I'd give Stacks a break and realize it's one more small intuitive feature that helps users with the switch.
- Jibberwalk, on 11/07/2007, -3/+25Or, you know, he does... and you're just being a prick.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/07/2007, -1/+21My wife hates change too.
- Audacitor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+19I don't get it. You have one OS (Vista) whose updates fix a lot of stuff, but it takes over a year to get those updates. On the other hand, you have an OS (Leopard) whose updates don't fix much, but get pumped out pretty fast. So I'd have to live with fewer problems to deal with in the long run if I went with Leopard.
- Nossie, on 11/07/2007, -1/+18errr since when? if you drag a folder or drive to the dock its suddenly a stack
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/07/2007, -2/+19Excuse me if I'm wrong (don't have Leopard yet), but can't you just remove all Stacks from the Dock?
- antoniojvr, on 11/07/2007, -0/+15What the hell is wrong with your keyboard?
- meatmcguffin, on 11/07/2007, -1/+16I found a great bug - Right click on a dock item, hit the shortcut key to move to a space (something + arrow) several times and then left click on the dock item.
Watch it go nuts :) - schoate09, on 11/07/2007, -3/+15Your wife should learn better communication skills, or you're gonna be in for a nasty marriage with the "do this, DO THAT!"
- crackah, on 11/06/2007, -12/+24Just means less things in vista to fix!! OH SNAP!
lol, but really, stupid comment. - ChromaVita, on 11/06/2007, -0/+12I don't hate the stacks feature, I just automatically turn off the Fan option. Trust me, it's a lot more useable
- blackwhale88, on 11/06/2007, -1/+11don't really have any gripes with anything new in leopard...
stacks, spaces, coverflow, menubar, dock, its all gravy...
just hope they fix the minor bugs and coverflows lag.
but for those idiots that hate the features then why don't you jus go back to tiger? so simple. - skinfitz, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8Perhaps you could describe the procedure to us?
- mathmanjeffy, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7You found a bug with software and you ...might... submit a bug report?
- Audacitor, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7My sentiments exactly. Stacks could be such a powerful tool, but they're just so isolated from the rest of the OS.
- Nossie, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8and always wrong....
each 10.x.X is the equivalent of a Windows service pack (although in smaller more frequent amounts)
each 10.X.x release is an upgrade like what 98 was to 95 or XP to Vista.
You could then suggest that OS 9 is to OS X what Windows 98 was to Windows XP (2k doesnt count since it was never aimed at consumers) ..... except Windows 9X shipped with crippled NT code and Windows XP became real NT code.
The 'X' in OSX has acquired quite a bit of good branding in the same way the 'windows flag' has. - Bhima, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Yes you can. I find that my document folder is too large for stacks to work as envisioned so I moved it. But having the downloads there is pretty handy and at least now my GF doesn't download stuff and lose it.
- aspec, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Eh, I'm getting used to stacks, but I think Apple has done a damned good job with their new OS if that's all you have to complain about (I did turn off my 3d dock, though). Even if there were other things that bothered me, network performance and compatability introduced in leopard is impossible to leave behind. I'm so happy when finder doesn't crash when I disconnect from a windows network.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7my updates bring all the boys to the yard...
- Tippis, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7....except that a large part of Vista SP1 has already been released through Windows Update, making SP1 in large part (but, admittedly, far from completely) a collection of hotfixes.
- timusca, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6That may be a problem with the apps themselves...
- thesledman, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6I agree. As a new Mac user I find stacks great. Having the download folder in a stack makes life easier when downloading multiple .pdfs, .sql docs etc. Fast easy access to launch or trash the files saves me time. I don't feel its broke or cluttered. Sure if you have a ton of stuff in a folder, like a large website, stacks is not a good idea, but really it would defeat the point to have to scroll through a huge stack. Perhaps if I had used osx prior to 10.5 I would be upset like some others are, but for me its a welcome and helpful feature that truly saves me time. But as with any feature, you should be able to tweak and modify it easily. Turning it on or off should be a given.
- tortfeasor, on 11/07/2007, -2/+8No, you're making ***** up.
- Altotus, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6I installed Leopard on my late-model white iMac (but not my work MBP). So far it fixed two issues I had with Tiger and introduced nothing adverse. I use the dock on the left, so it's still 2D and I prefer that. I've not experienced any of the bugs some seem to have had, but I don't have much sympathy for those that got bit by the APE problem.
If you're using Unsanity software, you ought to know what it does really mucks up your machine and can easily render it inoperable. It's always been that way and it will always be that way. It attempts to modify the code of applications when they start -- and when has that ever been a good idea?
I presume that 10.5.1 will update a few device drivers, probably allow you to at least scale objects in a stack and maybe permit you to use non-stack folders. I imagine there will be a couple of enhancements to Time Machine to make it behave properly with shares. However, Apple tends to add functionality in updates too, thought fewer than a service pack (Microsoft prepares 2-4 service packs while Apple issues up to 12 updates during a product's like-cycle) - kashem, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5Everyone talking about stacks, but I doubt this is ever going away. If anything. the update will be aimed to fix priority bug fixes, like install or compatibility problems, not enhancements.
I got rid of the documents stack -- but kept the download stack as grid. Don't use it but it's there. - dyranios2, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5esp that " if you browse the mac forums, people have actually switched from Leopard to Vista because of all the bugs in Leopard." part that was just over the top, other wise keep up the good work.
- DROWE859, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Here you go: http://www.silvermac.com/2007/leopard-dock-with-bl ...
- dyranios2, on 11/06/2007, -2/+7holy ***** your trolling is weak old man, maybe if you were more subtle?
- chillypacman, on 11/07/2007, -5/+10Service Pack updates are HUGE, the last one for XP added features upon features, had a completely reworked networking system amongst other things. But for other things like small patches and hot fixes unlike Apple Microsoft releases smaller ones more often between bigger SP updates.
Regardless of that there are some major bugs in leopard that need fixing, if Vista came out like OS X it would have been criticized to hell and back. Theres no doubt that apple rushed leopard into stores and now is playing the 'finish making the product' game. An update this early after release is a poor showing on apples part, this update should have been there from day one. - adamkmccarthy, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6at least they've noticed that quite a few of their users are having issues with leopard...i like the idea of stacks but ive gotten rid of the ones in the dock, for the volume of stuff i have its rubbish, no quicklook in them, no way to even control their viewable size, im sure loads of people have shrunk the dock to a smaller size but the stacks dont. horrible....but there are other issues that need looking at too.
- dominic2, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Anyone having Front Row issues? On my PowerBook G4 Front Row occasionally blacks out and then comes back when I press an arrow...
- TannerLD, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5You can choose how it is sorted.
- dancallahan, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Stacks are pretty useful, I just wish that I had the ability to manipulate the files that are in them without having to go to finder. If I could right-click in stacks, all my problems with them would go away.
- Radan, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4I think the Fanned stacks are great when you sort them by date added or date edited, when you only need the latest items in the stack (For example the download folder).
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+5i think the point is that stacks replaced a feature that many people were used to, it's like from tomorrow on you'll have to pee sitting down for the rest of your life. it's easier, try it! but i just don't ***** want to. gimme back my piss control!
- rodrigo74, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Did you submit the bug to Apple?
- MacParrot, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4@serpico,
He's not wrong really. Leopard in many ways DOES feel rushed. Much like with Microsoft's Vista, Apple took things out of 10.5 to get it out when they said they would. Most of what was promised was completed, but only half-way. Time Machine has some issues with certain other back-up software (Retrospect for example) and almost every Adobe Video/Audio app in CS3 isn't working very well. Naturally Apple can't account for every third-party application to make sure they work, but major vendors like Adobe software really needs to work out of the gate without major issues. As it is most of the Adobe apps won't be usable until Adobe updates them Dec/Jan.
Also, Back to my Mac currently isn't working with third-party routers and (this part is completely wrong) the first-gen Apple Airport Routers (the spaceship models).
I never made jokes about Vista being delayed. It happens to everyone. Apple has made some misteps lately with what used to be their core business. With all the hoopla surrounding the iPhone and new iPod releases, I think they've forgotten (or just put on the back burner) their mantra of "it just works".
Just because we enjoy our experiences with Apple products doesn't mean we should automatically give them a pass when something is wrong. - tortfeasor, on 11/06/2007, -1/+5Bad press? That's statement is not just a stretch, but objectively wrong. http://news.google.com/news?rls=en-us&q=review+leo ...
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/06/2007, -1/+5OK, Try waaaaay more stable.
- mufasa, on 11/06/2007, -1/+4I hope they fix whatever is causing firefox and azureus to quit unexpectedly all the time.. never had that problem with 10.4
- yabos, on 11/06/2007, -1/+4Explain why just about every major tech journalist says Vista is a pile of garbage and Leopard is what Vista should have been like.
- mdesjardins, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3I hope they bring back wireless disk interop w/ time machine. Time machine is kinda useless to me until I can plug a drive into my airport extreme.
- unit101, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3All of CS3 is working fine here.
