Apple sells 1 million iPhone 3Gs in first weekend
appleinsider.com — Apple said Monday that it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on Friday, July 11. "iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."

- paulot, on 07/14/2008, -9/+5Who? Why don't you buy from an Apple or AT&T store like a normal person?
- incandescent, on 07/14/2008, -1/+12Because he lives in the UK I would imagine. There are places other than the USA ;)
- paulot, on 07/14/2008, -3/+10I wouldn't know. Bush is protecting me from external exposure to terrorist propaganda that originates in foreign countries like Iran, Iraq, and the UK.
- hiro, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2Because noone in the UK has heard of AT&T?
- r3zonance, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Well, buy one at Apple Store, or O2 store then for the UK.
- HolyChimp, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Don't try and buy from O2. My iPhone is still sat in the O2 store because they ***** up and broke their system and now head office won't let them sell upgrades until they find out why it ***** up (Hint: a load of people tried to buy an iPhone at the same time.)
Apple can't do upgrades (apparently O2 haven't told them how) so Carphone Warehouse would seem to be the best best (never thought i'd say that!)
How much do I like brackets!
- HorseloverFat8, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I only know of the Carphone Warehouse from Darren Lamb in Extras.
- timusca, on 07/14/2008, -16/+1Honestly, I kind of expected more... the first iPhone launch was US only, so proportionally, the original iPhone sold more. These stats are worldwide.
Still a boatload of phones though... congratulations to Apple.- pustudent, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8The worldwide comparison caveat would be true with an unlimited supply of iPhones. I don't know the particular figures, but the correct question to ask is given the total supply of iPhones presented by Apple over that three day period, what percentage of those phones were actually purchased. Demand was likely close to meeting supply. Moreover, unlike last year, an iPhone 3G could not be purchased without a contract, which may have deterred some customers.
- PabloMac, on 07/14/2008, -4/+1I'll be deterred until T-Mobile has the iPhone and 3G later this year.

You have an apple logo as your avatar and you don't know that AT&T has a 5-year contract on the iPhone? Shame on you, wanna-be-fanboy... shame on you.

- Swift2, on 07/14/2008, -13/+3An interesting thing. The press is now out of love with the iPhone, as much as it was in love with it a year ago. The 3-G was ho-hum, the whole thing was hype. Look at the coverage of the two events, if you don't believe me. So there weren't lines the day before or the night before. But the lines showed up at 6 or 7 in the morning. But the lines continued in many places over the weekend. A million phones worldwide, and I'd be interested in how many in the U.S.
- wellyuk, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6That's the press for you. They change their stance like I change my underwear - weekly.
- Phisolo, on 07/14/2008, -10/+39I bet that gets doubled quickly as the "early adopters" bring their iPhones into corporate environments. Once the blackberry crowd sees their cube mate successfully using the iPhone. Then they see how easy it is to use the phone with their Exchange server, the ball will really start rolling.
- crussell96, on 07/14/2008, -3/+2What if they get into work and discover that they cant use a touch screen keyboard? Just sayin.
- Tenoq, on 07/15/2008, -2/+8They'll shoot themselves in the face for being a moron?
- shank2001, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5I type faster on my iPhone than on my chicklet smartphone. Just learn to trust the autocorrect.
- etherspy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+0eh...what about people who use Domino? No love? BES server sync anyone?
- ThaDRD, on 07/15/2008, -3/+1No user of ours will be connecting their personal iPhone to our Exchange network. No way, never.
- bovox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1The iPhone's the BEST consumer electronics/phone gadget out there, however, it most definitely will not be suitable for a corporate environment. I've had mine for about a year and I have yet to be able to type a couple of sentences in an e-mail in less than a minute. The thing just isn't designed to type on like the Blackberry.
- crussell96, on 07/14/2008, -3/+2What if they get into work and discover that they cant use a touch screen keyboard? Just sayin.
- AaronH, on 07/14/2008, -8/+15Can we get a jump in the stock now for God's sake!
- Wailord, on 07/14/2008, -0/+33The most interesting part is that the original iPhone only sold 270,000 in the first three days and took two and a half months to hit a million. Obviously, a worldwide launch and $400-less price contributed, but still interesting nonetheless...
- kipmarlowe, on 07/14/2008, -12/+82But wait. According to Apple haters the iPhone selling out was just a marketing ploy. Surely it must because places like, uh, Denmark had so few to begin with. I knew it would sell more than the projected 500,000 because I get what the iPhone is all about. It's about the OS, and now the apps, and not the camera's megapixels. I heard every single thing I'm hearing now about the iPod, too.
As far as marketing is concerned, if they didn't market as they have, and if there hadn't been free marketing from buzz, the iPhone would be a flop. Sure, I get that, too. I also get the iPhone is not for everyone. I'm a techie, and I'm not one of those who couldn't figure out a smartphone; though surfing the web really sucked, and the OS wasn't all that fun.
You've almost got to wonder how many of the really over-the-top nay-sayers are sitting in a competitors cubicle, telling me, a well-adjusted and well-educated adult male that if I buy the iPhone it's only because I'm drinking marketing cool-aid. Funny how, having worked in IT, none of the Windows-only croud have ever told me that in person.
I think Apple haters think they're much larger in number than they are. The popular, but finite, Apple bashing on Digg doesn't gel with the real world. "I frucking hate the iPhone!" Haven't heard it. Most people I know realize that any product I buy is based upon reason and taste, not just marketing alone.
By the way, if you're an Apple hater, don't say the "iPhone sucks." That betrays your bias, and that should, should be embarrassing because you are literally prejudiced — against a group who doesn't use what the majority uses, i.e. Microsoft Windows, Blackberry, etc. That's the definition of bigotry. Perhaps some of you just need to hate something. That's totally understanding. The younger you are the less I blame you. Just please try to direct it at the object, not the user.- zombiecarlin, on 07/14/2008, -25/+4Apple haters? You mean people who haven't been brainwashed by slick marketing into worshiping a corporation? Look in the mirror and really ask yourself if the cause you are championing is really worth it?
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -2/+17They appear to be worth a great deal, based on the amount of energy you and people like you expend on Apple Hatred. You are the one who places value on Apple through your own actions!
- zombiecarlin, on 07/14/2008, -15/+2What actions where? I spend most of my free time helping kids in poor inner city schools, not preaching the virtues of a large corporation. Get the ***** outside and do something for somebody who really needs it instead of sitting around doing a companies marketing work without getting paid.
- clak, on 07/14/2008, -3/+12It's obvious you have a small penis.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/14/2008, -0/+14Yes it's about the apps and the OS. It's why I'm waiting for the Android phones, but I wasn't going to wait an entire year, hence I got an iPhone this weekend. That said, a better camera with image stabilization wouldn't hurt. The iPhone is not perfect, far from it, but it offered me the best value proposition.
- krische, on 07/14/2008, -3/+3I don't hate the iPhone. I'm glad it gave the much needed kick in the cell phone market. I just get sick of all the hype surrounding it and the 10-15 front page stories praising it. We get it, the iPhone came out on friday and sold well over the weekend (did anyone really expect it not to?).
I just get sick of all the hype of people praising it like it is the second coming of Jesus. At the end of the day, its just a phone that lets you easily do simple tasks like email and web surfing.- Taiyoryu, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4True enough. The fact is Nokia, Sony Ericsson, or even HTC or Samsung are in a position to replicate what Apple has done. It's certainly within their grasp. Android on one of their phones could certainly give Apple a run for its money. The HTC Touch Diamond is one pretty phone and Nokia and Sony are well-known for their feature-packed and well-performing phones.
- krische, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5So far, Samsung seems like the only one close to competing with Apple (Sprint can't keep Instinct in stock even with daily shipments). And if I am not mistaken, the HTC Touch Diamond still runs Windows Mobile. I feel like that will be a hindrance for competing with the iPhone. (Windows Mobile definitely not user friendly)
- sithie, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1you had that pre-typed up before the article existed, didn't you
- ThinkBox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2If Jesus came to earth today, we would crucify him twice as fast while getting him to sign away his merchandising rights.
It isnt just about the product, the marketing is where the phones get sold. But dont assume that just because the marketing is very good that then the product is total crap.
I HATED apple, but I got a G5 a few years ago to work on film editing, i hated it at first. I am about to buy my 3rd Powermac set up, I have a 17in MBP and a mac mini media server. Design and quality applications are what keep me coming back for more. Say anything you want about them, but until you own the product - its really hard to hate on them.

- clak, on 07/14/2008, -5/+80Apple's success proves a very important lesson. Geeks CAN'T predict *****, because they don't understand the needs or interests of ordinary people.
For example, there are thousands of geeks on the web who complain about the lack of features on the iPhone. These geeks actually use all those features they refer to on their Windows Mobile phones or Blackberries, even if the features are implemented poorly. A regular person will probably use 10 percent of those features on the same smartphones. If they have to go to the user manual for more than five minutes, they do without.
With geeks, on the other hand, learning to use those poorly implemented features is half the challenge. They're like a jock rebuilding the intake valve on a Camaro. Regular people just want to pick up a phone and use it. So, no matter what features the iPhone doesn't have, regular people will still want it. That's something most geeks will never understand.
I talk with geeks all the time who just can't understand why anyone would want to pay more for an Apple computer, when you can build your own PC for "half the price!" Whenever I tell them that my sister and grandma have no desire to build a computer and would rather buy it off the shelf, they just look at me with a blank stare. And even though I have the ability to build my own computer, I just don't have the desire anymore, but then again, I've burnt out enough motherboards in my day to kill the mystique.- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -2/+40You're right except for one thing - most geeks actually DON'T use all the features. They just want them there.
It's us geeks who have realized what the featureset we actually need and use is, that have embraced things like the iPhone.- clak, on 07/14/2008, -1/+16True, very true.
- kungfoolou, on 07/14/2008, -12/+1"have the ability to build my own computer" and "burnt out enough motherboards" ? I haven't fried a mobo in 15 yrs and built every machine (except laptops) that I own. That does not sound like you know how to build your own PC, beyond the theoretical realm.
- clak, on 07/14/2008, -4/+15Are you on crack? All you have to do is buy a case, motherboard, RAM, processor, cables, power supply, a hard drive, CD or DVD drive, keyboard, monitor and mouse and get a Windows CD. You adjust the jumper settings according to the manual that came with the motherboard, more than likely an Asus, and you boot the computer, which flashes the BIOS, which will start the CD drive, which starts Windows. I could teach a four year old to build a computer.
Of course, no one tells you about electro static damage when you start to build your own computers. Even with an anti-static mat and wrist strap, I've managed to burn out about 3 motherboards in my day. Of course this happened over extended periods of "tweaking" my hardware for gaming purposes. Now that I have a Mac Pro, I'm fairly protected from contact with the Logic Board (that's by design, unless you're installing RAM).
I have a G5 which is five years old and I haven't had one hardware problem. NOT ONE. It's the oldest PC I've ever had. - wellyuk, on 07/14/2008, -3/+1I think it's a while since you last built a PC from components. Most (all?) motherboards these days come with jumperless configurations. You plug in the CPU, the drives, the RAM, video cards, fans and you're good to go. Flashing the BIOS? I don't recall ever having to do that, but it's 3 years since I last built a PC. Certainly, I haven't had to touch any jumper settings since about 1998. Also, I've never burnt out a motherboard in my life and I've never used an anti-static wrist strap either.

- SeenByMany, on 07/14/2008, -5/+13I wonder if Ballmer is still feeling as smug as he was the day the iPhone was announced...suspect not.
Here's the video for those that missed it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oGaZIKYvo- krische, on 07/14/2008, -3/+2Well, until I hear about major corporations ordering iPhones to replace all of their Windows Mobile or Blackberry phones, I think he can rest easy.
- digggggggggg, on 07/14/2008, -3/+4Almost a year later, Windows Mobile is still clunky and annoying to use.
- inkswamp, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11Oh for god's sake. Give it a rest. I'm no fan of Steve Ballmer, but the man was actually right *at the time he made the comments.* It's not like those comments applied to the iPhone 3G. He was talking about the iPhone and its price as unveiled at Macworld 2007. He said it was too expensive and gee, Apple went ahead and lowered the price a mere month after it was introduced. And look here, they went and further reduced the price for the 3G model.
Seriously, I've used Macs for 15+ years so I'm no defender of Microsoft, but be honest and admit that Steve Ballmer was right. Don't discount the message because of the messenger.- bovox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1He's also right about the lack of a keyboard. Corporate users will not adopt the iPhone as long as it is awkward to type more than a few abbreviated text messages.
- shiberving, on 07/14/2008, -3/+8Clearly it's all about the price point. Waiting was difficult, but I'm glad that I did.
- drmcninja, on 07/14/2008, -9/+2I love my iphone, but why does anybody care that Apple sold a lot of them this weekend?
- markpeck, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4If you were an investor in Apple you would care a lot...
- DownkeyKowng, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7I doubt any investors look for stock tips around here.
- inkswamp, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4Because, even if you're not an Apple fan/customer, the iPhone may be the start of a big shift in public interest from cheap cell phones to smart phones--something that has been predicted (with talk of "convergence devices") but has so far failed to happen. There was a ChangeWave survey posted here recently that showed an increase in interest of 3% in the buying public in smartphones, not a huge shift, but it happened in the space of 3 months... and that after years of consumer interest stagnating at around 5-7% of the phone market. Could be the start of something big.
So, did you want an answer to that or were you just trying to take a swipe at iPhone users? - drmcninja, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1I was genuinely curious, thank you. Did you miss the part where I said I love my iPhone?
- inkswamp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I did actually miss that part. My apologies. Seems that this topic brings out a lot of anti-Apple jackasses, and I mistook your post for one.

...and most have full QWERTY keyboards!- clak, on 07/14/2008, -4/+11Uh, Microsoft doesn't make the hardware, they just license the OS.
And what, they make about 5 dollars on the license? That's about 100 million dollars. Apple has sold 7 million phones and get about 200 dollars per phone. That's almost 1.4 BILLION dollars. Yeah, I would rather have Apple's hardware sales.- Me1000, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1you haven't factored in the subsidy either, the carriers are probably giving Apple another $200-$400 for each phone.

- Tuto, on 07/14/2008, -10/+3I have to ask why do people buy iphones? I mean I can agree that they look good and the touch screen is probably pretty fun to navigate, but to me that sounds like the novelty will wear off in a week. It just seems to be an overpriced gimmick

- lorductape, on 07/14/2008, -4/+15bought it, love it, am using it currently. I don't know what all the apple haters are talking about, but the only MINOR isuses i've had are issues with the 3rd party apps themselves. hardly apples fault. the thing is next to flawless.
- LilBoyLuver, on 07/14/2008, -2/+3I wonder if this includes the AT&T Store direct fulfillment orders for the people who couldn't get phones because they were out.
- utahnkid, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Inside joke? Pedophile?
Can you please explain your username??
- utahnkid, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Inside joke? Pedophile?
- magneteye, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3Well stated, Kip.
- vdogg89, on 07/14/2008, -6/+2well, due to the fact that they sold the iPhone in a crap ton of country's, this doesnt seem so significant
- Barackalypse, on 07/14/2008, -5/+4Great, but how many of those were actually able to get activated on AT&T's network?
- CAisBacK, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Take that Lil Wayne...
- SWATJester, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Best digg comment ever.
- lobstermobster, on 07/15/2008, -5/+4I love the people that beach about the iphone being a phad because it is purely a toy and corporations will never implement it...
One major thing that these people are forgetting is that if enough employees request the iphone and omg...C level managers want the iphone too...IT departments will be forced to support the iphone...and ZOMG it's f'ng compatible with Microsoft exchange server and has tons of apps that will make people more productive
Another ranting...the iphone is the future of smartphones. Apple has created a concept and a great OS that will let them dominate the smartphone market just like they dominate the personal music player market. Surely Apple will not let another company steal their idea and create a better product like the let Microsoft do in the 80's/90's...if only my Canadian homies to the north could get a better deal :( - alexra, on 07/15/2008, -4/+2only 9 million more to go
- braineater2448, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1They said 10 million in 2008. So...We started counting in January, naturally. So less than 9 million. Probably closer to 6-7 million.

- mgill3, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3In other news, Windows mobile still sucks.
- Zippo, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1Now if only Rogers would get some more in so I can finally get one, dammit!
- wshwe, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1Apple should have shipped at least 10 million iPhones to stores worldwide for launch day and 10 million per week thereafter. Nokia sells 10 million phones per week.
- caseycoold, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1Um, they didn't really sell 1 million. They sold les than half, to the end user at least:
