For example, there are thousands of geeks on the web who complain about the lack of features on the iPhone. These geeks actually use all those features they refer to on their Windows Mobile phones or Blackberries, even if the features are implemented poorly. A regular person will probably use 10 percent of those features on the same smartphones. If they have to go to the user manual for more than five minutes, they do without.
With geeks, on the other hand, learning to use those poorly implemented features is half the challenge. They're like a jock rebuilding the intake valve on a Camaro. Regular people just want to pick up a phone and use it. So, no matter what features the iPhone doesn't have, regular people will still want it. That's something most geeks will never understand.
I talk with geeks all the time who just can't understand why anyone would want to pay more for an Apple computer, when you can build your own PC for "half the price!" Whenever I tell them that my sister and grandma have no desire to build a computer and would rather buy it off the shelf, they just look at me with a blank stare. And even though I have the ability to build my own computer, I just don't have the desire anymore, but then again, I've burnt out enough motherboards in my day to kill the mystique. - kipmarlowe, on 07/14/2008, -12/+82But wait. According to Apple haters the iPhone selling out was just a marketing ploy. Surely it must because places like, uh, Denmark had so few to begin with. I knew it would sell more than the projected 500,000 because I get what the iPhone is all about. It's about the OS, and now the apps, and not the camera's megapixels. I heard every single thing I'm hearing now about the iPod, too.
As far as marketing is concerned, if they didn't market as they have, and if there hadn't been free marketing from buzz, the iPhone would be a flop. Sure, I get that, too. I also get the iPhone is not for everyone. I'm a techie, and I'm not one of those who couldn't figure out a smartphone; though surfing the web really sucked, and the OS wasn't all that fun.
You've almost got to wonder how many of the really over-the-top nay-sayers are sitting in a competitors cubicle, telling me, a well-adjusted and well-educated adult male that if I buy the iPhone it's only because I'm drinking marketing cool-aid. Funny how, having worked in IT, none of the Windows-only croud have ever told me that in person.
I think Apple haters think they're much larger in number than they are. The popular, but finite, Apple bashing on Digg doesn't gel with the real world. "I frucking hate the iPhone!" Haven't heard it. Most people I know realize that any product I buy is based upon reason and taste, not just marketing alone.
By the way, if you're an Apple hater, don't say the "iPhone sucks." That betrays your bias, and that should, should be embarrassing because you are literally prejudiced — against a group who doesn't use what the majority uses, i.e. Microsoft Windows, Blackberry, etc. That's the definition of bigotry. Perhaps some of you just need to hate something. That's totally understanding. The younger you are the less I blame you. Just please try to direct it at the object, not the user. - superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -2/+40You're right except for one thing - most geeks actually DON'T use all the features. They just want them there.
It's us geeks who have realized what the featureset we actually need and use is, that have embraced things like the iPhone. - Wailord, on 07/14/2008, -0/+33The most interesting part is that the original iPhone only sold 270,000 in the first three days and took two and a half months to hit a million. Obviously, a worldwide launch and $400-less price contributed, but still interesting nonetheless...
- sooch, on 07/14/2008, -9/+41Say what you want about the iPhone as a phone, but jesus christ is that thing the future of mobile devices.
- Phisolo, on 07/14/2008, -10/+39I bet that gets doubled quickly as the "early adopters" bring their iPhones into corporate environments. Once the blackberry crowd sees their cube mate successfully using the iPhone. Then they see how easy it is to use the phone with their Exchange server, the ball will really start rolling.
- DownkeyKowng, on 07/14/2008, -4/+32Finally! Someone posted an iPhone article! I was tired of holding my breafth.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -2/+17They appear to be worth a great deal, based on the amount of energy you and people like you expend on Apple Hatred. You are the one who places value on Apple through your own actions!
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -1/+16True, very true.
- Britney90210, on 07/14/2008, -7/+21I'm actually going to buy it today cant wait!
- Diggnabbit, on 07/14/2008, -1/+15Who uses voice dialing? I never have.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/14/2008, -0/+14Yes it's about the apps and the OS. It's why I'm waiting for the Android phones, but I wasn't going to wait an entire year, hence I got an iPhone this weekend. That said, a better camera with image stabilization wouldn't hurt. The iPhone is not perfect, far from it, but it offered me the best value proposition.
- DiGiC, on 07/14/2008, -5/+181Million and still carphonewarehouse cant deliver my ONE!
- incandescent, on 07/14/2008, -1/+12Because he lives in the UK I would imagine. There are places other than the USA ;)
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+15Are you on crack? All you have to do is buy a case, motherboard, RAM, processor, cables, power supply, a hard drive, CD or DVD drive, keyboard, monitor and mouse and get a Windows CD. You adjust the jumper settings according to the manual that came with the motherboard, more than likely an Asus, and you boot the computer, which flashes the BIOS, which will start the CD drive, which starts Windows. I could teach a four year old to build a computer.
Of course, no one tells you about electro static damage when you start to build your own computers. Even with an anti-static mat and wrist strap, I've managed to burn out about 3 motherboards in my day. Of course this happened over extended periods of "tweaking" my hardware for gaming purposes. Now that I have a Mac Pro, I'm fairly protected from contact with the Logic Board (that's by design, unless you're installing RAM).
I have a G5 which is five years old and I haven't had one hardware problem. NOT ONE. It's the oldest PC I've ever had. - lorductape, on 07/14/2008, -4/+15bought it, love it, am using it currently. I don't know what all the apple haters are talking about, but the only MINOR isuses i've had are issues with the 3rd party apps themselves. hardly apples fault. the thing is next to flawless.
- inkswamp, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11Oh for god's sake. Give it a rest. I'm no fan of Steve Ballmer, but the man was actually right *at the time he made the comments.* It's not like those comments applied to the iPhone 3G. He was talking about the iPhone and its price as unveiled at Macworld 2007. He said it was too expensive and gee, Apple went ahead and lowered the price a mere month after it was introduced. And look here, they went and further reduced the price for the 3G model.
Seriously, I've used Macs for 15+ years so I'm no defender of Microsoft, but be honest and admit that Steve Ballmer was right. Don't discount the message because of the messenger. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -3/+12It's obvious you have a small penis.
- SeenByMany, on 07/14/2008, -5/+13I wonder if Ballmer is still feeling as smug as he was the day the iPhone was announced...suspect not.
Here's the video for those that missed it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oGaZIKYvo - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+11Uh, Microsoft doesn't make the hardware, they just license the OS.
And what, they make about 5 dollars on the license? That's about 100 million dollars. Apple has sold 7 million phones and get about 200 dollars per phone. That's almost 1.4 BILLION dollars. Yeah, I would rather have Apple's hardware sales. - wellyuk, on 07/14/2008, -1/+8Don't use voice dialing. Never have done in my 14 years of mobile phone use. Don't care to use it. Don't care my iPhone doesn't do voice dialing.
BREAKING! 20 iPhone haters grasp at straws to bring a downer on a successful (mostly) iPhone sales weekend! - AaronH, on 07/14/2008, -8/+15Can we get a jump in the stock now for God's sake!
- paulot, on 07/14/2008, -3/+10I wouldn't know. Bush is protecting me from external exposure to terrorist propaganda that originates in foreign countries like Iran, Iraq, and the UK.
- DownkeyKowng, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7I doubt any investors look for stock tips around here.
- cerejota, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6what you get for buying from CRAPhonewarehouse...
- SPECOPS, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6There is a free voice dialer already in the app store, obviously theNazz doesn't research before opening mouth and inserting foot. (its not the best I've used, actually it's kinda cheezy, but hey its there, it's free, and it works great).
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ ... - tehnico, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8digg him down if you want, but the next commenter DID prove to be exceedingly gay.
- wellyuk, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6That's the press for you. They change their stance like I change my underwear - weekly.
- ohpreis, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8Don't say so, windows has QWERTY, keyboards! really? Whoa, what a wonderful Windows world it is. Na really, QWERTY! I just can't get over that. What a progressive thing to have.
- pustudent, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8The worldwide comparison caveat would be true with an unlimited supply of iPhones. I don't know the particular figures, but the correct question to ask is given the total supply of iPhones presented by Apple over that three day period, what percentage of those phones were actually purchased. Demand was likely close to meeting supply. Moreover, unlike last year, an iPhone 3G could not be purchased without a contract, which may have deterred some customers.
- Tenoq, on 07/15/2008, -2/+8They'll shoot themselves in the face for being a moron?
- andrewpmk, on 07/14/2008, -4/+9I am not buying one until a competitor to Rogers starts offering them (I'm Canadian).
- iworkwithyou, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5In spain there are no iphones whatsoever
- shank2001, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5And how! I absolutely love this thing! Best phone/PDA etc. I have ever owned.
- shiberving, on 07/14/2008, -3/+8Clearly it's all about the price point. Waiting was difficult, but I'm glad that I did.
- krische, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5So far, Samsung seems like the only one close to competing with Apple (Sprint can't keep Instinct in stock even with daily shipments). And if I am not mistaken, the HTC Touch Diamond still runs Windows Mobile. I feel like that will be a hindrance for competing with the iPhone. (Windows Mobile definitely not user friendly)
- shank2001, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5I type faster on my iPhone than on my chicklet smartphone. Just learn to trust the autocorrect.
- markpeck, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4If you were an investor in Apple you would care a lot...
- wellyuk, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5Copy and paste I will give you. MMS? Never used it, no plans to use it, don't care my iPhone doesn't do MMS.
Now, if I cared that my mobile phone did MMS and voice dialing, I would have bought a different phone to the iPhone. However, I don't and so I didn't. - superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5Your loss.
- macchappy, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4When was the last time that you forwarded a text? Honestly, are there text chain letters or something?
- zombiecarlin, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6I expect your mother to lick my balls the way she used to but sadly the magic is gone and now my expectations are lowered.
- digggggggggg, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4Well, I can think of at least a few things that are good about it. It's an awesome media player with a great screen for watching videos, it has a mobile web browser that doesn't suck, and it now has applications and GPS.
Now, tell me that absolutely none of those features sound even remotely appealing. - inkswamp, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4Because, even if you're not an Apple fan/customer, the iPhone may be the start of a big shift in public interest from cheap cell phones to smart phones--something that has been predicted (with talk of "convergence devices") but has so far failed to happen. There was a ChangeWave survey posted here recently that showed an increase in interest of 3% in the buying public in smartphones, not a huge shift, but it happened in the space of 3 months... and that after years of consumer interest stagnating at around 5-7% of the phone market. Could be the start of something big.
So, did you want an answer to that or were you just trying to take a swipe at iPhone users? - mkberg, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Wow. I love you.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4True enough. The fact is Nokia, Sony Ericsson, or even HTC or Samsung are in a position to replicate what Apple has done. It's certainly within their grasp. Android on one of their phones could certainly give Apple a run for its money. The HTC Touch Diamond is one pretty phone and Nokia and Sony are well-known for their feature-packed and well-performing phones.
- shank2001, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Congrats, you are going to love it!
- sithie, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3lol, this guy is awesome
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Inside joke? Pedophile?
