- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Feck sake that's a nice start!! They'll have no bother getting the other studios on board now once they see those numbers. They'll be like what the hell? Did you see how many movies disney sold last week compared to us, how the? Then the penny drops.. Quick call Apple and apologize, tell them we're sorry and we want to join the party.
- gunnerycox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39Some perspective on the numbers
$1million/125k downloads= an average of $8.00 for Disney. Apple is taking about $2.00. Anyone know what the bandwidth cost would be per download? About $0.25-$0.45?
17,850 movies per day
744 movies per hour
12.4 movies per minute.
Cinema now has a run rate of only 75,000 downloads a month. And they have 20x as many movies to choose from.
This is a pretty amazing run rate considering this is the first week with only 75 titles. This is great news. - Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Ha! Take that all you people that said that movie downloads wouldn't take off, Ha I say! This is indeed a great start, congrats Apple on a great job!
- Andy.D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32How about on your computer. You know, the big box with a nice display attached to it? Some people listen to music on it too. CRAZY I KNOW!
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Wait, you mean there's a better approach than treating your customers like criminals and extorting them through shady legal practices? Someone tell Hollywood, quick!
- morgdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23And they haven't launched iTv yet, so presumably most people are watching these on iPods (cringe), their computers or some hacky Mac Mini PVR setup.
- s0ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Holy crap! Considering only Disney owned movie studios were available on iTunes at the launch I expect the other major studios to be calling Steve Jobs in 3...2...1...
Studio Exec: "Steve, Hey! so uhhh...weve been thinking about putting our movies on iTunes and have decided to do it! So how freakin fast can we get them up there? Like....now?"
Exact same thing happened when they added TV Shows. When will these studios learn? - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18People don't give a ***** about DRM I'm afraid.
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I would like to see rentals on iTunes for movies (not a subscription). I would pay 3.99 for a rental if it had the following terms:
- 3 views or 7 days to watch; whichever comes first
- Opportunity to buy the movie for the purchase price minus rental price; within the rental period.
This would allow me to try movies I am not willing to BUY just from seeing the preview. I would be able to experiment with other movies but still be able to buy it if I like and think I'd watch it again another time. - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I would totally rent movies off of itunes.
- s0ny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Damn all you anti-DRM people! Dont like it...dont buy it, but it isnt going anywhere. Im so sick of every iTunes article I read of having 20 comments saying "BOO CREEPY DRM, HOORAY PIRACY!" or that Apple is forcing DRM infested crap down peoples throats.
Look, if all people felt like you, then iTunes would be a horrible failure and almost every major tech company in the world wouldnt be attempting to enter the Music/Movie/TV downloading market.
And WTF does you being from Michigan have anything to do with being more American then the rest of us? Does it make you special? Do you Michigan folk just breed better Americans then the rest of the US? - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15How am I crippled, I have an Ipod and I dont have any intention of useing anything else... Why cant people get the whole Ipod + Itunes synergy? Dont want to use Itunes dont buy an ipod, dont want to use an Ipod then dont use Itunes.... Its not HARD to understand.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15...and your point is?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Dude I LOVE THE MOVIES!!! I got the Brothers Grimm and it was awesome the resolution was good and I could start watching it after of minute or so of it downloading. Plus I'm like frickin addicted to Lost now, and its super cool cause the resolution is the same as regular NTSC resolution. Its off the chain good!! Hooked up my macbook to the tv with an adapter and good to go!
Two major problems:
1. Limited selection, ya I know, it'll get there but I'm a big indie movie buff and I noticed Disney's movie catalogue bites monkey balls.
2. No rental, they really really really need to compete with netflix - xM55, on 10/02/2009, -1/+14Wow.
I really didn't expect it to do that good. - jordkett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17*waves goodbye to movie rental stores*
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Who said that?
Here's a clue: hundreds of thousands of people have been downloading movies for years. It took off a long time ago. ;) - lsdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Thats also not taking any growth into consideration.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11your 'damn the man' attitude is soooo 80's.
- jpurnell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11They sold 1,000,000 songs in the first week of the music store, with 200,000 songs available at $0.99...To sell 125,000 movies at ten times that price or more, with only 75 films available is pretty impressive.
- mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9or you can just hook up your ipod to the tv.... just get the cheap cable or a base station. the image quality is nice on my 50" HD plasma.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Also, when you think about it most DVDs are about 15 or 20 dollars, so it wouldn't be worth it for those DVDs. HOWEVER. Look at the price of Disney DVDs... they are between 25 and 35 dollars at Wal-Mart and Target.
So really, if you don't care THAT much about having a box, spending 9.99 - 14.99 on a Disney movie isn't that bad. Just a thought as to why it may be more successful than most people thought. Would you rather spend 12.99 on getting Cars for your kid in a digital format he can’t destroy, or 30 dollars on a DVD that he will probably chew up in a few days… - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Can I burn them to a blank DVD though? Or am I stuck in front of the computer?
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Thats what, nearly 20,000 a day? I realise a lot of them will just be one off things but still Thats pretty impressive, I think apple has really hit (another) winner with this, with the already established Itunes userbase.
Goes to show that you dont need really restrictive right management and prices for movie downloads (points finger at amazon).
Just a side note about that site, it's absolutely riddled with advertisements, there's:
- Flash banner at the top
- Flash banner at the side
- 300x250 Static ad to the right of the content
- Google ads left under the content
- E-store adverts right under the content
- Affiliate link for macpoker under the 2 ads above
- "AppleInsider Market Place" at the bottom of the page with 3 more affiliate links.
I understand that websites need some ad revenue but that is pretty rediculous :
(And yeah I know, flashblock / adblock etc etc) - jordkett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Also with their "air tunes" youre gonna be able to transmit video from your laptop ot your TV without any wires.. Just a reciever ontop of your TV
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@morgdx It's not such a bad thing if your computer's display, like mine, is far better than your crappy, old, needs-to-be-replaced-badly TV.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7UnGod,
who besides you expects Apple to sell as many movies as they do individual songs, or somehow "catch up" to the number of songs they sell? - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5> How do I get burried for stating mathematical fact
I don't think it's the facts, but the editorializing you did at the end. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What do you think DVDs are?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Wonder how many of those were just "one-offs", to test the system (i.e. bloggers, reviewers, etc). Nonetheless, thats about 100K more than I expected in the first week :p Love to see how these numbers scale in time.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Apple iTunes store sold 1 million songs the first week, and over 1 billion in 3 years, damn.
- WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No as of yet you cannot burn them to DVD's however its been rumored that apple is in talks with the movie studios over limited burning rights. Which is good but I would like to know the conditions of "limited" burning rights.
- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@Prockcore
Dont even bother, its flash and its ad supported. torrent FTW - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love when people speak out against DRM and oppose it by saying that other people should not tell you what you can and cannot do with your media purchase... by telling you what you can and cannot do with your media purchases.
I'm not a fan of DRM myself and I don't buy music or movies downloads with it, but fercrissake, let other people do what they want. If it doesn't bother the people buying them, why should it bother you? You know, I bet most of the people buying these are going to watch them once or twice and delete the file. Not everyone out there is being a pack-rat with everything they download. Maybe some people just want to watch and move on. - MiningGab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But consider that 1 album is about 10 songs.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People who download movies from iTunes are mostly people who didn't pirate movies to begin with and there are even some that did pirate movies but want to support a good legal download service.
The introduction into the market of a legal download service does not spur piracy, it reduces it. iTunes prooved that years ago, where were you? - HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DRM is bad, but iTunes does right by customers despite using DRM to protect their busimess model, which makes it ok, right. Well, almost. Apple is only good because it still gets competitive pressure from others. But it's popularity will counter that competitive pressure, until it emerges as a monopoly. Then the likeliness of their services sucking axe will exponentially rise, even as those who don't buy into the new "Microsoft of entertainment" are left up shat crik without a piddle.
Anti-DRM vocals are all considered whiners just because their complaint is of some inevitable thing, but hey, it hasn't happened yet, so shut up already. Why stand up for consumer rights and against monopolization now when we can wait until said monopoly has effectivly taken our rights?
It eventually won't matter that DRM enforces legal usage of digital media, presuming it liberally bows to fair use rights. It WILL matter a whole bloody lot when the related markets are segmented into groups by those who control them with proprietary formats...when it's impossible to operate a system that can bridge the groups to service all our needs...when we're irrevokably locked into Group X's products and services.
I don't buy/use DRM'ed anything, but it still affects me in the long run when others do. By letting consumers do what they want now (in an uninformed way), neither they NOR I will have that privelege later. - mexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Clearly you've never looked into the used car market.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For an outlet that was supposed to fail before it began, yeah it is pretty impressive. Not to mention that its the start of digital revolution, where physical media is out of the equation. And the number of DVDs sold by Wally World is nothing compared to the amount stolen from there, so its all relative anyway.
- tehsuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll start buying movies online when they're in 720p.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3UnGod,
You are comparing a service thats been out for 1 week with one that has been in operation for 3 years. But lets take your explanation again-its "total revenue":
Total revenue for iTunes movie store its first week? 1 million dollars.
Total revenue for the iTunes music store its first week? Yep, 1 million dollars. - heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5hmm apple itunes movie: 640x480 resolution at h264 compression.
dvd=640x480 resolution (unless widescreen) at mpg2 compression.
Not much better by the way. - brihar73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5These numbers must be for all the Macintosh users who actually have a working version of iTunes 7 instead of the buggy one that was rushed out for Windows without proper testing. Yes, I'm jealous. I admit it.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5afruff,
the resolution of the itunes movies are 480p up to 640x480. Dvd resolution is 720x480. To the human eye you shouldnt see a huge difference. (AT ALL) - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Aww... it's so fun when Apple-haters respond to Apple's success. Those grapes aren't too sour, are they?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lsdeath,
in terms of growth, iTunes Music Store sold 1 million songs the first week, averaged 2.5 million songs/week one year later, and, in the last Apple event, said they are selling 3 million songs a DAY. - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then just "bury and lame" and move on with your day and stop commenting in here to whine about it.
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@afruff23
"Timmy, go listen to your music and leave me alone"
"Mommy, my music all expired and/or I'm on my 5th computer and licenses don't allow that"
.....
"Timmy, go into iTunes and reset your authorization limit back to zero. They let you do that once a year for the peeps that forgets to de-authorize" - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lakawak,
Really? I thought the TV shows were doing ok.. do you have a link for that? thanks! - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DRM is here to stay for a LONG time.
