- TremorX, on 07/25/2008, -11/+126It's also rumored to add cut, copy and paste, for you whiney bitches who need that sort of thing.
- Spaerky, on 07/24/2008, -8/+91Hawt! I want to get my hands on that! Enough of the 2.0 crashing already!!!
- punkrockguy, on 07/25/2008, -5/+52Thank god! I have had quite a few issues with 2.0! Can't wait to get this!
- ViralSpiral, on 07/25/2008, -8/+41What do you mean copy and paste is due out? Are you telling me it's not in? I've been using my iPhone for nearly a year and haven't noticed. Just goes to show what you need and what you don't.
- xsecretfiles, on 07/25/2008, -1/+25rumors don't need citation silly!
- hove, on 07/25/2008, -2/+25For ages i have wanted a way to sms my current location to my friends.
instead of
"Where are you?"
"I'm in the Rummer"
"The where?"
"The Rummer"
"Where is the Rummer?"
"It's in an ally next to st nics market off Corn Street"
"Which one is Corn Street?"
etc
You could just text them your location which would pop up on their map and give them turn by turn directions to you, saving everyone a lot of time. - Virgule, on 07/25/2008, -2/+25Then you are very lucky :P
My iPod touch 2.0 crashed many times already. Much interface latency problems too. - kermatron, on 07/25/2008, -3/+22Patience: "not to be confused with the supposed 2.0.1 that will fix the myriad bugs and issues with 2.0" [Engadget]
- andru, on 07/25/2008, -2/+21Yeah, we've ALL been having those issues. ;)
- cyberwiz01, on 07/25/2008, -8/+25[citation needed]
- thefandango, on 07/25/2008, -0/+15you do realize i have to digg you down for using the word "Hawt".
i had another sentence here where i described something actually pertinent to the iphone, but i got bored and wrote this instead. - phoomp, on 07/25/2008, -3/+17Yes, that's perfectly acceptable for a product from a company that purports to make things that "just work" and criticizes it's competition for producing software that crashes.
- saleem, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13I believe 2.0.1 will come out much sooner than 2.1. 2.0.1 has only bug fixes, no additional enhancements
- Eaglefire, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12I for one hope the 2.1 update solves all those gummy volume button issues
- Virgule, on 07/25/2008, -3/+14but will it kill the interface latency?
- atticus8, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10I could see why you would need this. You aren't the best explainer:
Q: "Where are you?"
A: "I'm in the Rummer"
Q: "The where?"
A" "The Rummer"
Maybe he didn't hear your text message clearly the first time. - guimonkey, on 07/25/2008, -1/+10Does this upgrade also cost 20 bones?
- dalesmatrix, on 07/25/2008, -3/+12I'd love an "email a map of your current location" button in the google maps iphone application. Fingers crossed it makes it in there eventually (or some kind soul writes an application)
- ds|tan, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9Take a screenshot of your position in Maps.app and email it with Mail.app
- adammharvey, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9thanks for bringing something up that has been mentioned hundreds of times. im sure they'll implement it now just because of your comment.
- phoomp, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8Well, it goes to show us what *you* need and what *you* don't need. Of course, your needs are probably not reflective of *everyone's* needs.
- Hax0rJimDuggan, on 07/25/2008, -11/+18And copy and paste is due out in version 10.6. Yay!
- alpha19, on 07/25/2008, -1/+7The issue isn't that it can't do it with the current version. The issue is the SDK specifically says no one can make a route assistance/turn-by-turn application (because TomTom or someone is planning to do it and wants the money money).
- gllopc, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6Astroturf? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- Niz1, on 07/25/2008, -6/+12haw dare you come out with a valid point *diggs down*
- chadian22, on 07/25/2008, -4/+9http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/25/iphone-roundup- ...
(Look at the screenshot + Read the Story + Learn to Google) - nytejade, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5I recently signed up for the iPhone developer program and have been reading through the documentation provided by Apple.
What I learned, in terms of the rampant crashing, is that it's not the phone's fault -- it's actually most of the programs.
Developing on an embedded system is challenging because resources are extremely limited. You can't just assigned data types that "over shoot" the needs of the data they store. Also, garbage collection in Objective-C isn't as straight forward as most of these guys might be used to. I'm sure a lot of developers, who wanted apps out the door asap, cut a lot of corners.
Except for a few daemon processes, the iPhone basically only runs one program at a time, and all the available resources can be dedicated to that program. However, if the program exceeds a threshold for memory consumption, the phone's OS acts appropriately and terminates the application.
Even so, Apple is still partially to blame. They want complete control over the applications people are allowed to download, yet they don't provide a similar level of control for quality assurance. - Lewiji, on 07/25/2008, -1/+6My iPhone was very stable for a few days, now I'm having the crashing issues, having to reset every day.
- guimonkey, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5Sorry, I forgot to enable my sarcasm tag.
- hausome, on 07/25/2008, -3/+8Or you can call them and save 50 some texts...
- mjbyrne, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5Most likely it won't, apple won't charge for 2.x updates. only x.0 updates
- sockpuppets, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4My imagination is my citation.
- juneof44, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3They did. It's called Technology > Apple. If you don't want to see that anymore, go to your profile > settings > customize topics and remove the check from Apple.
Or just quit your bitching. - skidooer, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6The hardware is, apparently, capable of 2m accuracy. Does the Dare really have a more accurate device?
Yes, the software is lacking, but that can be fixed at any point. With all the momentum behind iPhone development, I feel we will soon see some amazing things being done with the GPS unit.
With the Dare, I'd be afraid that what you've got now is as good as it's ever going to get. - JlmAWP, on 07/25/2008, -4/+8Pretty quick action by Apple to address this, but unfortunate that it had to be addressed. I will be very happy when I don't have to wait for the OS to catch up with my text typing. It's basically like waiting to see if I have to backspace because of a typo or goddamn unwanted auto-correct.
That reminds me, Apple: Auto-correct needs to be optional. Seriously. Even Microsoft would have given us that one. - xsecretfiles, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6I found out that when it starts to crash, I just need to restart the whole phone, then it's fine for like a day or two
- AndreasTh, on 07/25/2008, -1/+5 there's an app that mails a link to google maps of your current location;
G-spot from PosiMotion
(oh the names....) - inputname, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Mind you if you get send a mms, it will give you an 8 digit alpha-numeric ID and another for a password that you have to remember or write down cause there's no copy and paste.
- manitoba98xp, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3To be honest, people are already complaining about the iPhone's battery life (which compares favourably to many of its competitors, but I digress). Background processes would be abused by many developers, and shorten your battery life further.
- SuperSunny, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4...What? Outlook is Microsoft. They even abandoned it
- Gee1004, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2What is the difference between the stories on the iPhone, linux or Windows? If you are not interested, don't click on the story or filter it. There are dozens of stories a day that is BS, I just don't click on them. What's the big deal?
- Nossie, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I don't know.... depends on how much you like being boned?
- dfross, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4A turn by turn GPS system could be done with the current system.
Right now, when you ask for directions, it goes to google and asks for a route from A to B, and that's it. Google maps gives back a list of all the points and turns needed to make the journey.
What the iPhone needs to detect is when your GPS position is significantly off that route, to make a second call to Google to ask for the directions from your current position, to the next point you were meant to hit on the map. It simply doesn't do that right now, but that change would make turn by turn GPS routing possible with the current application, without firmware 2.1 or anything. They've simply not implemented it yet. - jjustin01, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I have had that problem a number of times. It happen in a number of other applications as well
- digjam, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Infact they called Activesync..ActiveStink!
Now I call Apple......umm...Crapple? - AndreasTh, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Forgotten link: http://www.posimotion.com/index.php?argv=gspot
- dalesmatrix, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3nice thinking outside the square there :) Home button + click hold button for those that don't know how.
- LilBoyLuver, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5But if they put in Copy Paste what will everyone bitch about?
What, no MMS. I am not buying the phone until MMS is included. How will my little cousin send me random pictures ever five minutes without it? - kkiran, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Interestingly, it never crashed on me! Though it gets real slow when accessing settings and adding contacts in SMS ... Hope Pwnage is not thwarted with 2.1!
