- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -4/+75well if apple says it it must be true
- techblogLAT, on 07/25/2008, -3/+41We should get a clown for the economy. I think that would really lift the economy's spirits.
- toetagger, on 07/24/2008, -0/+20Nothing a little Prozac and a polo mallet can't fix.
- infinityredux, on 07/26/2008, -4/+24cheer up emo economy :)
- streak, on 07/25/2008, -1/+19GWB has already shown that technique to be ineffective.
- 4NDr01D, on 07/26/2008, -0/+16Apple is still the busiest store at the mall,
Sharper Image next door had a fire sale and shut down
the Sprint kiosk closed
the Suncom Mobile kiosk closed
the Dell kiosk closed
I don't know WTF Pottery Barn for Kids is thinking - dashdingo, on 07/26/2008, -2/+16"...using stark new language to describe the state of the economy."
What, no one has ever used the word "depressed" to talk about a depression? - johndi, on 07/25/2008, -3/+16As pointed out by Kevin in the blog's comments Apple said that consumer spending is depressed, not the economy. His comment shreds the gross speculation done by the blogger.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 07/24/2008, -3/+11must be
- Easty, on 07/26/2008, -1/+9Economy: ":("
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+8Someone should tell the economy that spending cuts aren't made with razor blades.
- sheeplovewool, on 07/26/2008, -2/+9Maybe free iPods could lower gas prices.
- SwedishNinja, on 07/26/2008, -4/+11Leave it to Apple to take something someone else already said or did and claim it as their own.
- Ob1masterjd26, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6I hope that touch book is cheap :)
- NaziHatinChimp, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6:(
- Tyrghast, on 07/26/2008, -8/+13Why do we give two ***** what Apple thinks? This is a software company, not a panel of economic experts.
- streak, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5It is interesting to note after all, because in the previous quarterly conference call, Oppenheimer said Apple would leave it to others to decide if the economy was in a downturn. It would seem Apple hadn't yet felt the effects 3 months ago, but now it does.
- kickass911, on 07/26/2008, -4/+8***** over priced macs are the problem.
I still love them - zdiggler, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4every hear of the Great Depression?

The economy is out on a fricken ledge threatening to jump! - Lewiji, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4Even though Apple didn't say that, this delusional blogger did.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5Apple is right. Its predictions will come true.
- Lakeuk, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5Apple you know what you need to do, bring your prices down, do a 16Gb iTouch for £99 and I maybe temped to give up on a good british pint for a month
- Jkins019, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5Apple, saving the economy one ***** over-priced iphone at a time.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4I'd like to get the 60GB depressed economy, even though it is a little thicker and heavier.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3No, Oppenheimer stated the same exact thing in this quarter's call as well. They aren't economists.
The quote "depressed" comes from the 10Q, which is required to lay out every single risk. It states CONSUMER SPENDING "may remain depressed for the foreseeable future." Not the economy.
No *****.
Apple isn't trying to forecast or even label the economy, it's simply describing a risk to the company.
Another risk in their 10Q: "Because the Company does not carry earthquake insurance for direct quake-related losses and significant recovery time could be required to resume operations, the Company’s financial condition and operating results could be materially adversely affected in the event of a major earthquake."
I guess Apple now thinks an earthquake is imminent? - bundwallah, on 07/26/2008, -4/+7Apple's pricing is depressing.
- krnldmp, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4"consumer spending is depressed, not the economy"
I love how all of a sudden there is no such thing as a "consumer economy" when this time last year you were supposed to be an idiot for not understanding how it works.
USA has been on a steady diet of ***** for at least the last 15 years and not only can't it figure out what's wrong it still doesn't believe there is a problem. - phoomp, on 07/26/2008, -3/+5iDepressed
- seastobble, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4such revolutionists, those apple people...
- JJ1230, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2You must be a PC...
- jdaniel284, on 07/26/2008, -1/+3Apple stock currently has a P/E ratio of 31.70. I am 34 years old. If I bought Apple stock today, and they continued to make the profits they are currently making, I would be 66 years old before they could even meet the financial obligation of my stock certificates.
US Economy depressed? Perhaps. Apple stock due for a major bubble-bursting depression. Definitely! - punkcat, on 07/26/2008, -1/+3nothing to do with apple, its the person reporting it as news thats the problem.
- daehnomel, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Dude, you're soooo wrong.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1It's a simple formula really. When 60% of our GDP is based on consumer spending, and energy costs plus inflation rape any extra, disposable income the consumer would otherwise spend, the economy tanks.
- Twenty5, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2Apple for president!
- mrmayor92, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2then drop your prices...
- AAK15, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2The economy is just drunk
- Zlorp, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1but they've been 89 cents for such a long time!
- roryk27, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Apple knows all...
/zombie voice - nullcodes, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3AAPL is doing this so that they can as usual beat wall street estimates. This is their game, duh.
- otbeverly, on 07/26/2008, -4/+5Sadly, it's going to get worse. Too bad you have to watch BBC International News to get anything about the US economy from the media. And I say this as someone who works in the media in Alabama.
- polalion, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3Well the economy better not go to Russia then, it'll have nothing to listen to over there.
"WHY ARE THEY NOT BUYING OUR RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED STUFF?!?"
/cuts wrist - rasde, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1tl;dr
