- dpotter2, on 07/28/2008, -5/+104let the rampant speculation begin
- RudeTurnip, on 07/29/2008, -47/+138***** you, two of my friends died when Apple switched to Intel!
- JamesMorris, on 07/29/2008, -10/+60A decent graphics card?! Oh wait silly me this is an apple product.. Yes steve lets stick to putting in budget cards.
- Dkrainey, on 07/29/2008, -9/+59I don't care how much of a cliche or meme this statement is its still funny every time I read it.
- Phych, on 07/29/2008, -1/+43Hopefully the next-gen macs will improve the quality of these comments.
- OneManArmy, on 07/28/2008, -5/+44I wonder if this has something to do with PA semiconductors Apple acquired sometime ago.
- GinaJuice, on 07/29/2008, -7/+31Damnit Apple, just update already!
/Back to schooler - geoken, on 07/29/2008, -2/+25"Intel may not be supplying motherboards for the new Apple laptops. This opens the door for the possible inclusion of a Flux Capacitor in the new MacBooks"
- Gee1004, on 07/29/2008, -19/+41Will it lose your emails?
- tossayo, on 07/29/2008, -9/+28You know, the "Buy a Mac and get a free iPod" promo is still going on:
http://www.apple.com/promo/ - crowbar77, on 07/29/2008, -4/+228600 in a notebook isn't bad.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -4/+22That was a pretty good application of it.
- hexydes, on 07/29/2008, -7/+24Graphic cards are for gaming, and gaming is for idiots. We refuse to bow to such low-class demands.
Kind regards,
Steve Jobs - exomni, on 07/29/2008, -0/+17What did you expect? You think they do the free iPod promotions out of the goodness of their heart? It's obviously for cleaning out inventory, if you didn't realize that you're an idiot.
- Tenoq, on 07/29/2008, -1/+15Serious gamers don't bother with notebooks. :p
It's not like the mobile chips have got anywhere near the power of the desktop ones anyway... after all, you can't really cool a 200W GPU with a laptop fan. - kidjay, on 07/29/2008, -3/+15the going with nvidia to provide an onboard video solution that doesn't suck balls like GMA is an exciting possibility for people like me who'd like to use the macbook air on the plane to tweak (read tweak, not use for my entire solution) edits and motion graphics.
also gaming...you know. it'd be nice. - drlha, on 07/29/2008, -1/+13Guess what, they want you to buy their old stock before you go back to school. Why do you think they always have this "free iPod" offer in the summer: Its to clear out stock of old model laptops and iPods. Come September when the free iPod deal ends, they'll release updated MacBooks and iPod Touches, mark my words!
- dpowre, on 07/29/2008, -0/+10how many times have they used this graphic
- mikesown, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9Not quite. ATI and NVIDIA have invested hundreds of millions(billions?) of dollars in R&D on their GPUs. It's not easy to pack 100+ cores and use them efficiently while writing a driver to boot, especially with the kind of cards they're churning out today. I'm not saying PA Semi isn't talented, but it takes years and years to make a great GPU - it's not something they can make overnight. If it was, wouldn't Intel have done it with their GMA series?
- tdurden, on 07/29/2008, -0/+9Intel
- sambapati87, on 07/29/2008, -1/+9I'm a huge mac fan boy, and even I agree that this just doesn't deserve to be on the front page.
- bryceman111, on 07/29/2008, -0/+8I just finished high school, and I pretty much avoided classes that required books, therefore, never had to use my backpack or locker for the last year!
I still don't think a laptop for high school is majorly important though. Although, at my school, cell phones and iPods were allowed as long as you are not in class, for the most part. - drlha, on 07/29/2008, -2/+10No they're not transitioning away from Intel CPUs, this is purely about the support chipset being used, not the CPU.
- jgtg32a, on 07/29/2008, -0/+8Begin?
- obsolite, on 07/29/2008, -2/+10The phrase is "I couldn't care less." There's a significant difference.
- blacklilyninja, on 07/29/2008, -2/+9here is the secret deal:
no internet access without exclusive connection contract. - Norumeni, on 07/29/2008, -1/+8I agree with them, if I had a laptop in high school, it would've either:
1. Shattered (backpacks take a TON of beating in high school, no matter how careful you are)
2. Been stolen (high school kids are so good at theft!)
3. Banned by the administration (if they're going to ban cell phones and iPods, they're probably going to ban laptops too...) - CrushThemTorg, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7Summary: Something might happen, maybe.
- pond70, on 07/29/2008, -3/+10gaming is one of the reasons why we can do what we do with a personal computer - That little imovie that was cut together on the weekend is only possible with the advancements the gaming industry has placed on hardware research.
Can anyone name one thing apple does to push the limits of hardware, or has innovated some ground breaking advancement.
Apple is and always will be the kindergarten class of development and the reselling of an image. - gfxlonghorn, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6They are still going to be using their processors...?
- MrLarryLarry, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7You sir are an idiot.
Seriously though explain to me how creating their own chipset will suddenly make all apple hardware non x86 compatible? Apple provides boot camp drivers does it not? I'm sure they can write some windows drivers for their chipsets. They're not morons... - tomarnk, on 07/29/2008, -0/+6I like apple, but basically this artcle is saying "apple is doing something different, and though we have no details it might be REALLY BIG."
Didn't the Mac community know this before this artice?
Why so well dugg? - briansorders, on 07/29/2008, -4/+10enjoy it before it burns out
- DeathJux, on 07/29/2008, -4/+10So, not only do you suggest something completely moronic (as if Apple would ditch being able to run Windows), but you further seal your doom by plugging your own site or some *****?
Way to succeed at Digg. - jgtg32a, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6You're stringing together buzz words aren't you
- capturedpenguin, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6Inside
- newbill123, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6C'mon this isn't a rumor. This is just statistical extrapolation and a photoshopped pic.
The real Apple rumor mongers are saying the promise of a product "at a price below what other competitors can offer" is a signal that Apple will be trying to corner the medium to high end consumer TV market. Why would they still be in the Apple TV market as a "hobby" if they didn't have plans to turn it into something as big as the iPhone & iPod have become.
When the US drops analog broadcasts a lot of people will be hunting for new TVs. If Apple decides to offer a smart tv that's simple to use, there will be a LOT of people who'll buy it.
They'll fund this internally by dropping their Apple Studio Display manufacturing line. They'll make a single model with three ranges of features. The lowest being a flat screen, with Apple TV built in. The mid range will have a DVD drive. The high end will have a BlueRay drive.
Their goal will be to corner the market on consumer television and if that means temporarily giving up their high profit margin artist displays, for the good publicity of the mass market, they'll do it. - zetec, on 07/29/2008, -1/+6Wow, all your unsourced (and in some cases unquantifiable) statistics have certainly bewildered me into assuming what you say is pure fact.
Seriously though, don't pull random statistics out of your ass. - mfearby, on 07/29/2008, -3/+8A different chipset is "something special"? Get real... get back to me when you can replace your own hard drive in an iMac or buy a decent mid-range Mac where you can pop the lid and use your own monitor. Really... the number of "news-worthy" Mac-related stories on digg is pathetic! Stop digging crap, for Christ's sake!
- dmoore764, on 07/29/2008, -2/+7I spreeded it, so I don't feel so bad
- cgruber, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Harder to make clone macs that have the same hardware to run Mac OS X if Apple makes the motherboard that has a special chip on it that's used for identifying it as a 'genuine macintosh'.
- drlha, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Newsflash: People in Apple Support Forums have problems with their products. Film at 11.
- DesignNerd, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4Macs will be over 150 dollars a barrel!
- freshyill, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4Back to school season is always a time for them to use a promo to push out the old to students at a relatively good price. That clears the inventory for their big September/October announcements. Unless you can wait until Octoberish, you might as well buy now.
- deadbaby, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5Personally I don't care. I would buy a console if I wanted to play games. Moving away from Intel would definitely expand their options for graphics. I imagine they would buy a design from ATI or NVIDIA and integrate it into their north bridge. Anyway, I don't think anyone is really buying Macs to play PC games on. It's just not the real focus of this platform. You're better off with a Windows PC or console if you care about gaming. That's no secret... crying like a little girl over it doesn't solve the fact that anyone buying a Mac for games made a bad choice.
- topgigmedia, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5As soon as they start putting out ***** operating systems like Vista. Incidentally, not likely.
- TVarmy, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6Agreed. I'm kickin' it on my MacBook Pro right now. I play TF2 with all the settings turned up all the way.
- punkcat, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4do ding ding ding (intel xylophone)
