- FierceGrape, on 09/09/2008, -3/+29What is the story here, and why is this on the front page?
- IndigoMoss, on 09/09/2008, -0/+16The thing about the iPhone that really gets me is the expensive as contract. I wish they had some more flexible plans. When you are buying an iPhone you are pretty much putting in a $2,000 dollar investment into a cell phone. For me, as a student, I have no idea where the hell I'm going to be at in 2 years, so it'd be pretty irresponsible for me to put down that kind of investment.
It's going to be interesting to see where the iPhone starts to go. The Razr at one point was much like the iPhone was when it was first released. It was expensive, and only the "cool" kids were able to afford getting it. Now it's pretty ubiquitous, and most people can afford it. The iPhone may or may not go that way due to Apple. They usually always charge a premium for their hardware, but if they really want to compete with the more ubiquitous phones, they will have to do that. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -2/+181) turn down screen brightness
2) don't have wifi on unless you are actively using it
3) check email manually
more...
- all this is on their website "extending battery life" but you're too ***** lazy to look ... but not to complain - unloud, on 09/09/2008, -2/+16either way, it's pretty obvious that they'll sell at least 13 million by the end of 08
- nexmachina, on 09/09/2008, -0/+12Get out of ATT's panties and then we'll chit chat Steve.
- shakabrah, on 09/09/2008, -2/+12i don't see it. i use my 3g a pretty good amount for talking, tunes, and surfing and i get 3ish days per charge. what is so difficult about plugging in a phone before you go to sleep?
- supersteve, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6ha try getting a good cell phone plan in Canada. The best we can hope for is not getting actually ass raped.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -7/+13I for one welcome our new iPh.... aw screw it.
- dankluz, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6Are they going to get rid of the requirement that you join AT&T? They'd sell a lot more if they partnered with other, better carriers.
- inigomntoya, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Agreed - if they expanded to other providers, they would hit 13 million next month!
- id000001, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5You fail at math. 1% of 400 millions is 4 millions. Just think about it.
Beside, 1% of total cellphone market does not equal to 1% of the population. In US, not everyone have a cellphone.
Beside that, he doesn't mean just US. either. - PrometheusBorn, on 09/09/2008, -1/+6Why are both this story and your comment about a year outdated?
At least the story has the excuse of having been written in 2007. No idea why you're saying it costs $400 for an iPhone. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5***** yourself, *****.
- thegools, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5STFU until you offer it on other networks.
- supersteve, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5are you new to the technology world?
btw the iphone is 199 and 299 - eryximachus, on 09/09/2008, -3/+7You can always tell some fat, suburban loser because he uses the word "emo".
My god, can't you accept a little diversity in your pathetic, homogeneous, media created homeland? - sjmulder, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4It is not true that the iPhone is bound to just one provider in every country. There are also countries where the phone is available unlocked.
- incandescent, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I wish they'd concentrate on fixing the ones they've sold already. I've had two months of the most unreliable phone I've ever had and no ability at all to hang on to a 3G signal. Stop sticking your head in the sand and admit there's a huge problem Apple!
- sndream, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Around 30% are for replacement that got bricked.
- ChinezePanda, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Fix.... the... iphone.... 3g/edge/network infineon chip firmware bug....
fix. it.... just.. please... fix it. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3You're talking about my future ex-wife.
- gl77, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4oh, pardon me. replace "400 bucks" with "200 bucks" or "300 bucks" and its ***** corrected. regardless, its still an extravagant amount just for a ***** cell phone, not to mention the extra money you get charged by AT&T just for owning one. i can still spend that money on hookers and blow.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3And where is this new update that was supposed to come out today? 2.1.0? Installed Spore and it trashed my IPhone again. Not blaming Spore, but this iPhone is winding me up, I've done about 10 restores this month and each time it takes a full 24hrs to restore from backup (which is next to no size at all). If it works. And then after the restore I have to update my apps and then after updating apps half the time it hags at the apple logo after reboot. I daren't install any app anymore, which was supposed to be the whole attraction of the iPhone. It would be good if stable, but it's sooo flaky, it's driving me mad. AAAAAAAAAArrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh. Steve Jobs - READ THIS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
- camaroz06, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3My Edge phone will probably be the first and last iPhone I buy...its not that great of a PHONE. Drops calls like none other, I get ***** reception, and takes a very long time to acquire a signal when a signal is dropped or the phone is turning on. Its not ATT because I have had to use my friends ATT regular flip cell phones when my iPhone cannot get a signal or drops a call constantly due to bad reception. And I have had the phone replaced once since they thought it was some internal antenna issue.
It does have a wonderful internet interface though.
So unless signal strength, acquisition, and retention improve to a level better than that of a free cell phone from ATT I don't see myself getting another iPhone. - Solkre, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3If I could use the phone on other networks without screwing with it maybe.
I don't talk to anyone on AT&T, and until we get affordable unlimited talk plans across the board, I wont move from my Verizon cheap plan. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Where can I buy that Android phone?
Oh, right. - pyrates, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4Only because the law says they have to provide that.
- mousky, on 09/09/2008, -5/+8Either way, it's a drop in the bucket. Nokia sold over 430 million phones in 2007.
When Apple overtakes Motorola or another big-name player, then digg the ***** out of the article. Until then, the iPhone fanboys are wasting our time. - stellarceltic, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4Tell me about it. The LG Dare is just a poorly-executed copy.
- surferjoemaui, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2@incandesent
don't leave the lights on when you leave the room and switch to compact florescent lights. - cadmiumpaint, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2i'm an apple user but i still can't stomach shelling out the $400 plus plan for a phone. i like the idea of the iPhone using the real internet as opposed to that fake cell phone internet that my phone uses...but its such a steep cost. Hopefully in a yr or two the price can come down to something reasonable.
also waiting for flash, cut and paste, and 3g that works. - supersteve, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3this is not a regular phone so i am not sure why you think the battery life will be that same as one. There has to be some trade off for it's small size and sexy screen. oh yes and 3G. Just plug the damn thing in.
- mercury187, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2just got my contractless iphone 3g on friday, jailbroken on saturday and have been loving it since. Went contractless for the reason above, my current rate plan is half the price of the iphones rate plan... I use bossprefs to turn off everything until I need a certain service and screen dim as others have mentioned. With a few updates and more companies like EA sports making software for the phone it will really rock even more by the end of the year. I hope TomTom gets to release their iphone software......
- imnojezus, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Yeah, hardware lock-in is a pretty universal problem in America. Apple hosed themselves a little by signing a 5 year contract with AT&T, but it's in line with the rest of the telecom industry.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3Apple would sell everyone cyanide juice as long as it turned a profit for them, and was sold in a really sleek and cool packaging.
iPhones are one of the most unethical ways to steal money from people's credit cards, and yet everyone talks about them like they're the new yo yo. No one is acknowledging the fact that Apple stopped being a "cool" company years ago. - diggmaddy, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3That's an unfair comparison mousky. While talking about the iPhone sales figures, please compare the sales figures of similar phones from other manufacturers as well. your 430 million figure also includes the cheap phones which sell for -$100 (make $100 after rebates and contract). Also note that Nokia has a whole variety of phones, Apple has just 1.
- IndigoMoss, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2I don't think anyone actually "needs" an iPhone. It's more of a want.
- rgjigsaw, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2The service costs are ridiculous through ATT. A different carrier would be much more suitable and greatly surpass the goal of 1% market share. All you pay for with the iPhone is the touch screen; lots of other phones have the internet with the ability to check the weather and email also.
- RaiderWolf, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3I agree.

It will be interesting to see how well Apple does after RIM unleashes the Blackberry Storm on us. AFAIK, the rumored date for the Storm is October 13th. Fun stuff. - mousky, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3Looks like ol mooseonthe loose can't do math.
First, where did you get the 400 million figure from? Are you including illegal aliens? The July 2008 estimate was just under 304 million.
Second, 40 million is not one percent of 400 million. 4 million is one percent of 400 million. And one percent of 304 million is 3.04 million.
Want to try that again, mooseontheloose? - Elranzer, on 09/09/2008, -3/+5Nokia ships out to pretty much every cell provider. Apple is locked to AT&T (and in each country, only one GSM provider).
Apple can't honestly think everyone in the US is going to switch to AT&T just for the iPhone, do they?
I probably shouldn't have asked that question. - autechre78, on 09/09/2008, -2/+4These phones are a joke, my co-worker had one that he charged overnight and it almost burned his hand off when he went to pick it up. When he finally got it to cool down enough, he tried to turn it on and it was dead.
Just go buy a regular cell phone, and donate the rest to Stand Up To Cancer. - chewbie, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2I hate the iPhones (too closed up in regards to software, lowresolution, no video calls) but I still can't imagine what the heck people expect from a phone that small in terms of battery life. The whole phone is a big screen with GPS and WiFi built into it. It's also sporting an operating system. You can't expect miracles at that weight and format. Sorry. 1-2 days battery life with push e-mail and 3g turned on sounds normal to me
- kishosingh, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2iPhone is decided to grab Indian market till 2010 but I think it is not possible because in India, people think it has high price.
- digiguy, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1They can easily sell that much or more if they put flash and cut&paste on them. And sell it like before. People will buy 2 or 3.
- BoneStamp, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Wasn't this on the front page in the last few days?
- mousky, on 09/09/2008, -2/+3If the story was about some 'small player in cell phone market expects to snag 1% share of global sales' it wouldn't even be posted to Digg.
Once you replace "small player in cell phone market" with Apple and/or iPhone, it will be dugg to the top.
Even poor old Motorola, who has seen it's market share steadily decline, sold over 25 million phones in the first quarter of this year.
Nothing to see here. Move along. - mrBitch, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1RE: " the most unreliable phone I've ever had and no ability at all to hang on to a 3G signal. Stop sticking your head in the sand and admit there's a huge problem Apple"
It's kind of tough for Apple to fix the issue when it's already been proved this completely a 3G provider issue.
The BlackBerry Bold is having THE SAME issues with 3G (which kind of means that hating on the iPhone for 3G problems is being a bit of an idiot).
http://zwadia.com/?p=47
" ... is the 3G infrastructure being laid out in North America just not robust enough to service these new devices as they come online?
AT&T will sell the iPhone 3G and the BB Bold, and both of them have trouble in testing? As far as I can tell, all three manufacturers use different radios. So are the Infineons / Broadcoms of the world to blame? " - rimantas, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2well, if big players owning 99% of the market try to copy that 1% then maybe yes, you would see that in the news too.
- incandescent, on 09/09/2008, -1/+2Their website also tells you to switch off 3G, push email and GPS - the very reasons people "upgraded" to the iPhone 3G in the first place.
