- Dalhectar, on 10/18/2007, -9/+42Doesn't E-Music at 2.8 Million DRM free songs beat Apple's 2 Million?
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/18/2007, -0/+26I believe that the claim implies legal. I loved allofmp3, but it was about as legal as stabbing a guy selling alcohol at a cockfight taking place in a dry county because his girlfriend stole a wallet after losing a bet.

- Norweed, on 10/18/2007, -7/+26Still more expensive than Amazon.

- marvinmatthew, on 10/18/2007, -1/+16Out of the top 100 selling songs on iTunes at the moment, only 4 are 'iTunes Plus'
- Zero2aHero, on 10/25/2007, -3/+17If Apple now has 2,000,000 DRM free songs I sure wasn't finding them. Most bands I searched for on Amazon had at least one album in their music store. On iTunes I wasn't turning up anything DRM free (Yes, I have iTunes plus enabled).
- iChainsaw, on 10/18/2007, -2/+15...on windows.
- treed, on 10/25/2007, -1/+14Have you looked on Amazon? Not all the tracks are 89 cents. Many (most?) of them are 99 cents.

I have 83 purchased songs on iTunes (from gift cards). How many songs have Plus versions? One. One lousy song. - Firehed, on 10/18/2007, -0/+7Yeah, god forbid that people work for a living. My parents paid tuition in hugs.

- Wamzlee, on 10/19/2007, -2/+8What? They are $0.99 now? UGH! This is an outrage, I spent $0.30 more!!!!
I want my money back Steve Jobs!!
/sarcasm - fangorious, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7for the quadrillionth time, AAC is not Apple proprietary. The same people that developed MP3 developed AAC (it's part of MP4, you know) to have a better compression ratio for the same quality. The licensing is cheaper (no royalty for distributing content in AAC, for example) than MP3, and has great acceptance in consumer electronics. Just because your devices don't support doesn't mean no devices do.
http://daringfireball.net/2007/04/some_facts_about ... - Firehed, on 10/18/2007, -3/+9Oh no, some program used free memory!
You know that it's THERE to be used, right? Empty RAM is wasted RAM. I didn't buy two gigs just to have 1.75GB free, I got it so my apps can use it.
I'll also point out that it tends to pale in comparison to Firefox's memory "hogging". But I don't care if Firefox wants 184.69MB. If that's what it takes for it to run optimally and some other program doesn't want it, fine by me. IIRC, iTunes in Windows rarely will take even a third of that, although I'll admit that it's Windows performance tends to suck as compared to what you see on a Mac, especially with Cover Flow. That's just what happens when you don't have Core Image, I guess. - unloud, on 10/18/2007, -0/+6C-C-C-COMBO BREA

- KibibyteBrain, on 10/18/2007, -4/+9More like an everything hog...I can't think of resource on my system that iTunes has not abused in seemingly unnecessary ways, be it CPU, memory, video accelerator, or network adapter.
- Elranzer, on 10/18/2007, -1/+6Demonoid > PirateBay. If you like your torrents REALLY slow then PirateBay's for you, though.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4what if said indy band is too far away from your location? Thanks to the 'net I've found dozens of bands that have their albums on iTunes (or Aime Street, or eMusic - I'm not particular)
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -11/+15I know a better way to get DRM free music that doesnt make you deal with the horrible program that is iTunes
- Daniel591992, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4Original :)
- karamba_kid, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6That extra 30 cents you paid along with the thousands of other peoples 30 extra cents is putting some Apple employees child through college.
- hartley, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4Partially true, I will buy indy crap from the band itself when I see them on tour.
You are right in saying that I won't ever buy it from iTunes. Isn't that the whole idea behind the indy/diy movement? - Firehed, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3But most Amazon albums are only $8.99 when purchased as a set.
- Hermiod, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Why is it that every time the discussion of a legitimate downloadable music, TV or film service starts, someone has to advocate some means of gaining the same content through illegal means ?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/18/2007, -2/+5emule is a file sharing program, not a music catalog.
- theragu40, on 10/18/2007, -6/+9I'll admit it was a tad shady, but I feel like it was a little more legal than *that*.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3i thought the same thing. i was like "emusic had 2 million songs when i signed up a year ago."
- Firehed, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Plus indie labels. But according to Amazon's affiliate newsletter specifically discussing their new MP3 store that was sent out within the last day or so, Amazon claims their catalog is larger. Both have over two million tracks, though I'd wager Amazon has more mainstream stuff. Plus, they're also offering an insane 20% referral rate for a while on affiliate purchases, and 10% after it expires (for those not in the know, most products start at 4% and increase as you sell more).
I don't know which one is right, but it's clear that a) they're comparable to each other in size and b) iTunes really has a serious competitor, which is a Good Thing. Amazon's offering a lot of incentive for affiliate program-using webmasters to get the word out, and as it attacks the iTunes market share, Apple will have to push back by offering even better reasons to use their service. And then Amazon will do the same. The cycle will continue, and prove the beauty of competition - because in the end, WE win. - Firehed, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3That's because, by the sounds of it, the added indie labels make up a large percent of that two million. That's kind of the thing about indie publishers - they tend to not have the same mainstream appeal. As such, even if iTunes has a larger catalog of DRM-free content, Amazon's will probably have a wider appeal since they have two of the big four.
- aznedy, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4Because nobody can compete with free?
- ReyX, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3There's a whole iTunes Plus section on iTunes. Also, the songs have a + sign by them when they're listed.
- ketsugi, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3I grew up on Winamp, and was forced to use MusicMatch JukeBox when I bought my first Windows-compatible iPod. iTunes for Windows was a blessing when it came, and although I initially had issues about using iTunes to organise my music, I rapidly grew to prefer it over manual folder organisation on my hard disk. I've also used AmaroK, Rhythmbox, Songbird, and various other FLOSS alternatives, and nothing comes close to the ease of use and functionality I get with iTunes.
As for buying CDs, I'd still use iTunes to rip the CD and play the music. Amazon MP3 store? The music goes into my iTunes library. Maybe you don't like iTunes for whatever I'm sure are very good reasons for you, but please don't presume to dictate the opinions of everyone else just because you have a strong opinion in one direction. - emmcubed, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Uh, yeah. OK. Access the store without the program that's used to access the store?
- ispshadow, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2You fail at life.
- LxRogue, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2The "plus" area is really lacking in variety. The biggest inconvenience wasn't the cost, it's that they have literally have 1/100th of the main catalog.
- pu-z, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3Solution: Stop buying Britney Spears tunes.
- EmileVictor, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2I love how iTunes loaded an iPhone service onto my computer even though it hasn't been released in my country yet.
