- brandita, on 12/04/2008, -0/+42I'm still using an old 3 gen iPod. Someone at work a while ago asked if my screen was broken cause it didn't have any color.
- Nephersir7, on 12/03/2008, -8/+41Anyway, each time a new customer buys something on iTunes, he is forced to become an Apple customer for life.
- sghod1212, on 12/04/2008, -0/+26With only a year before the current model is obsolete and a minimum price of $150 who would be dumb enough to make every upgrade?
Don't get me wrong, I love my 30GB iPod video of 2 years ago, but I still have 10GB of space left and the player is in great condition, so why should I buy the new touch, classic, or even nano? - LeggoMyEgo, on 12/04/2008, -2/+27i'm pretty sure a simple memory upgrade is the opposite of innovation
- theremixtrack, on 12/04/2008, -2/+24sometimes i put porn on my ipod.
just saying. - Me1000, on 12/04/2008, -1/+21At least it glows so you know that it's off!
- bluechigger, on 12/04/2008, -3/+22MMmmmm... Apple.
Personally I just bought a sweet mApple Cube... - lovemorgul, on 12/03/2008, -3/+19 iPod has the same sleek design with improved video battery life and brighter screen
- aforce369, on 12/04/2008, -1/+16You're a part of a silent majority.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -4/+16Maybe they should just manufacture them to break after a year like they used to..?
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 12/04/2008, -4/+16Um, no. For one, they could buy iTunes Plus tracks with no DRM and use them in any player that supports them. They could strip the DRM. Or they could buy a track and use iTunes but not put it on a portable music player. Or burn them to a CD and re-rip or just use said CDs in a stereo.
Or hell, they could get fed up and get the tracks elsewhere. There's no forcing involved and there are plenty of ways to circumvent iTunes DRM. Then again, if the ***** record execs would let 'em, Apple would ditch the iTunes music DRM altogether. - compgeek, on 12/04/2008, -2/+13I'd think a lot of their problem is not a whole lot of innovation at each generation. Same features slightly different chassis. Only innovations lately have been the touch and it having wifi and such. All the other Ipods have largely been the same for years.
- coolboy0286, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11Bit Torrent
- tanmaker, on 12/04/2008, -4/+13The Zune is so under-rated. People need to give it the respect it deserves. Well at least 2nd and 3rd gen. 1st gen Zunes sucked
- flyinghigh, on 12/04/2008, -1/+8As long as I have an iPhone, there is no reason to get an iPod. I've spent too much on the phone to consider upgrading any time soon. Whereas one may upgrade their mp3 player every year or two, it doesn't really make sense for me to upgrade anything. Even though the mp3 player is secondary to the device, I'm not going to carry around another iPod as long as I have the phone.
- Me1000, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8Well, it is a trademarked name...
So referring to it as iPod, instead of an iPod is more accurate.
At least Apple refers to the iPod as "iPod" in official press releases and stuff. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6i wish i could be concerned with how to make a company worth more than $32billion.
- kevin52094, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6especially the brown one
- pdbailey, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I thought he was going to be talking about
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/03/appl ...
the shortage of iPods... - cubicledrone, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6For people who read Business Week, the fact that 20% hourly growth ends at some point is a "problem," even if your product completely redefines about six different industries.
- peestandingup, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Yeah, that 3% Zune market share vs Apple's 70 something% has Apple shaking in their boots.
Did you even read the story?? Its about these one trick pony MP3 players that are ALL dying because of convergence gadgets, namely phones. Zune's late to the party my friend. - tomtheman5, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I LOVED my G3...those red light buttons were HOT!
Yes, Apple indeed needs to innovate more...create a product that gets those "early adopters" interested in the iPod again... - anarchyx34, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5My 30gb ipod video is still working perfectly after 3-4 years and I use it every day. Why would I buy a new one?
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6I like my iPod and I don't care what anyone says.
- Username1977, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I have a 4g. Still works just fine. Hard drive cable came loose once, and that's been the only problem so far.
I've been thinking about getting the touch though. Mostly for web access and a few apps. - effigy11, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Yeah, the tech industry really would be better off if every device had a kill switch set to destroy the device after a year. ***** quality products.
- adaire, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5If Apple gave us something worth upgrading to then I would upgrade. They recently stopped making super huge ipods, which seems silly. Why limit yourself? This is the age of video. Also, the crappy little screen on a video ipod kills the joy of watching. The touch, while having a better screen, has hardly any storage capacity. Put them both together and then I'll upgrade.
- mrsteveman1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5It kinda is...
I've had pocket pcs since before they were called pocket pcs, and they all sucked even then, nothing i have seen comes close to the touch, which is why i bought one. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7But that would kill their other product line... Can't do that..
- Taedirk, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5I considered buying an iPod Touch when my iAudio finally died. Research showed me that the 2nd gen Touch has no disk mode, no current jailbreak that works on it, and contains all of the other fun detriments of iPods. I'd be forced into using iTunes and be unable to install anything I wanted, retrieve my own music, or basically do anything I wanted. Congrats, Apple; the first time I actually considered buying one of your products and having it filled with needless crap and restrictions I don't want killed it.
/Now if only Archos products weren't so damned expensive... - strangewill, on 12/04/2008, -4/+8"They could strip the DRM"
Yes, I love paying a company so I can download music, do something illegal with it, and be just as much a "bad guy" as if I just downloaded it for free... just so I can help support Apple (like they need it). - Tyrant505, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Wait.. didn't we know this already?
Older than the mp3 player... - xM55, on 10/02/2009, -5/+9What is this guy talking about...
- jermm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4The battery, well the battery and the harddrive broke on mine.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I have an iPhone and an 80GB iPod video. I'm glad I have them both. The iPhone is good for a casual music/video perusal. The iPod can fit so much more. I recently put about 2 days worth of video on my iPod and hooked it up to a TV at a LAN party. Couldn't have done that with the iPhone. Also, the physical buttons on the iPod make it much easier to use in a car. If you don't want much in the way of music or video, the iPhone will probably work, but I can't put the entirety of Futurama on my iPhone without raping the quality.
- redwallhp, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Business Week is pretty lame. I've seen at least one other dumb article of theirs like this, and aren't they the ones who had that policy against deep-linking? They had some sort of EULA-style linking policy saying not to link to pages other than their front page, because they lose valuable ad revenue.
- Scott2, on 12/04/2008, -3/+6There's nothing new. Show me a 200+ GB iPod touch and I'm on it. Until then? Not upgrading.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3President Elect Obama rocks a Mac:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northame ...
The Mac may have just received the biggest endorsement possible. This has been on digg already. - fumar, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I would love to see them innovate to the degree Microsoft has with the Zune. The first company (Apple or Microsoft) that makes a 240GB mp3 player gets my money. Until then, I'll stick with my 30 gig ipod even though I can only fit less that 1/4 of my music collection on it.
- mrsteveman1, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4You listen to 6 hours of music a day, and somehow that music takes up 160gb?
You have to recharge the thing sometime anyway, so you can sync what you want to listen to at night. Off the top of my head i would say even 32gb of space for music is more than enough for 6 hours unless its lossless. - mrBitch, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3@roxgod666 RE: " Sony has been innovating WAY more than overrated Apple but don't get nearly as much credit. "
Yeah, Sony innovation... that's why Sony's latest is an iMac clone :
http://www.bloomberg.com.au/apps/news?pid=20601093 ...
" Software Annoyances
... Vista suffers from annoying pop-ups that ask you to reconfirm certain actions as an extra security precaution, such as alerting you when an application attempts to connect to the Internet. While this can be helpful, it would be more efficient if Windows performed all security precautions in the background. Microsoft is working on an OS upgrade that should address some of these issues. Until then, your recourse is to manually disable some alerts so they shouldn't show up again.
The iMac had no such annoyances, and when it did update its software, it went through the drill fairly quickly.
When the Sony Vaio didn't present software hurdles, it performed well... " - 2of8, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Echoing the sentiment of a large number of comments: if it works, then why should I upgrade it?
(please Apple, don't take this as a sign to introduce shorter planned obsolescence times... please!) - mrBitch, on 12/04/2008, -1/+464 gig iPod Touch to be released in Jan 2009 at MacWorld.
This also means that the 32 gig iPhone will also be revealed at MacWorld Jan 2009. - mrsteveman1, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I'll take fanboys over annoying morons any day.
- Overcyn, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3how dare you KAHFAN!!! how dare you not have a problem.
- Ozzsanity, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4It's mostly music although I do have a few movies. Since I listen to music a good 6 hours a day I have probably gone thru it all a few times.
- Scott2, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Sony is the king of bad UI. And they don't innovate that much. That's why Apple gets the credit.
- shiftless, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Oh no, they made enormous profits and people spent their money till they had none left to buy any more iPods with. What a huge problem! Really, this happens with... EVERYTHING!
- MattBD, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I used to have a Sony Walkman MP3 player, and it was way ahead of the iPods of the time. It had a feature similar to Genius 2 years before Apple did, and it looked WAY nicer than any iPod.
Sadly the software was crap beyond belief. If Sony were to use less proprietary junk and just make their players easily compatible with third-party software, they would have a far superior player to the iPod. -
