- joshua447, on 10/23/2007, -7/+61I just hope LG, Motorola, and Nokia are paying attention and really understand why the iPhone is so popular.... it's not about features, but ease of use!
- jayfarer, on 10/22/2007, -14/+58It is not often that I hear people brag about being #4
- inkswamp, on 10/22/2007, -0/+21Here's something I just found over on the AppleInsider discussion forum for this article. Something for the scrapbook, to be pulled out and marveled over years from now...
------
"Is Apple serious competition? Palm CEO Ed Colligan seems downright nonchalant about rumors that Apple may introduce a mobile phone to market in the coming year," Sarah Jane Tribble and Dean Takahashi report for The San Jose Mercury News.
Tribble and Takahashi report, "Responding to questions from New York Times correspondent John Markoff at a Churchill Club breakfast gathering Thursday morning, Colligan laughed off the idea that any company -- including the wildly popular Apple Computer -- could easily win customers in the finicky smart-phone sector. 'We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,' he said. 'PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.'"
------ - djmalik, on 10/22/2007, -7/+26Sleek, futuristics, and beat my Razr into the ground in convenience.
- epyon180, on 10/21/2007, -2/+20Considering that the phone costs $400 with a 2 year contract and is competing with the likes of $50.00 motorola razr phones , I would say that the other phone companies should start worrying right about now.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/24/2007, -12/+24Why is it great news? Surely it doesnt matter to you personally how many get sold unless you lack belief in it yourself. If you like the phone you like it (love is a word I wouldn't use for a lump of plastic and metal) regardless of who else buys it - do you really need the backing of other people to vindicate your purchase?
- bking, on 10/22/2007, -3/+15People said the Walkman was a fad too. Not to mention the iPod.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -17/+29The way Digg has been talking, I would have thought it was #1. After all, don't we need an iPhone Killer? Why kill #4?
- Radar3D, on 10/20/2007, -2/+13Yes, they think different, just like everyone else.
- idiotwithastick, on 10/21/2007, -6/+17Also because it's an Apple product... brand image + good product = win.
- cmer, on 10/22/2007, -0/+10Didn't Ballmer say it was not going to sell???
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -16/+26using digg is beggining to make me feel like a douche... I mean, I don´t want to hang around people like you all... it´s just, you know, meaningless
- digibruce, on 10/22/2007, -2/+11Why is #4 impressive? Let me count the ways:
1. The phone costs $400 - with a contract.
2. It is available on 1 carrier.
3. The iPhone has been out for half a year.
Compare that to the #1 phone, the RAZR, which is available for free on every carrier and has been around forever.
So, yes, it's impressive that iPhone is #4. - GawtMilk, on 10/20/2007, -0/+9Better support for longer videos, such as documentaries.
- jumboyd, on 10/21/2007, -1/+10don't act like MS created something worthy of a monopoly
- funnyboy88, on 10/22/2007, -4/+12Walk into any cell phone store and there are a billion phones you can get for 30 bucks or less with a contract. And iPhone is beating them while being on one carrier and costing 400 dollars. That is damn impressive.
- deadbaby, on 10/20/2007, -2/+10If they sold 1.1 million units in the third quarter they must be pretty close to 2 million total? The best estimate I saw was 600-800,000 units sold in the first 2 months. When exactly does the third quarter start?
- ivanvanderbyl, on 10/21/2007, -4/+12Its estimated that Apple sells 12000 - 13000 iPhones a day.
- colincornaby, on 10/21/2007, -5/+12Windows Mobile is crap, and I used to use Windows CE as my primary OS. If Microsoft revamped Windows Mobile, they might be able to do it... but heck. The iPhone is running a modern operating system over freakin UNIX.
- inkswamp, on 10/22/2007, -2/+9To those of you bashing Apple and the iPhone, please remember how foolish a lot of those people on Slashdot look to this day who, during the iPod's first month of release, proclaimed with the mighty voice of the Internet know-it-all that this new device was an underpowered, overpriced, style-over-substance fad from a company that catered only to its elite core of Mac fanatics and that as cute as it was, it would never compete with the big players in the digital music player market nor would it compete with the low-end. Those comments look pretty foolish in retrospect, and many of you should keep in mind that these comment on Digg will be here years from now making you look just as foolish. Bear in mind that the iPhone doesn't come from the roll-over-and-play-dead Apple of the 1990s. This comes from the current Apple who, we've all seen, not only knows how to play hardball, but is eager to do so. I'd keep that in mind before writing the iPhone off.
- TheSmiddy, on 10/21/2007, -7/+13they have medals all the way up to 9th place now
- seinman, on 10/21/2007, -2/+8Simple math. A quarter is about 90 days. 1.1 million / 90 days = 12,222 sales per day.
- Murdats, on 10/21/2007, -2/+8exactly, its not like a console where the quality of the console is affected by the games released on it which is affected by its popularity.
its not like its going to get more third party developer support if its more popular - deadbaby, on 10/21/2007, -1/+7I've yet to actually have my iPhone battery go dead. I've got down to 10% a couple times but it's still holding a charge that lasts me 2 days. Can't really complain about that. As far as reliability goes, after the 1.01 firmware I've had zero problems with the stock firmware. When I installed summerboard my phone would sometimes have trouble displaying the springboard but eventually that bug was fixed. It's been extremely reliable.
- r3zonance, on 10/21/2007, -3/+8Depends if they abuse their position to retain that monoloply (like Microsoft did).
MONOPOLIES ARE NOT ILLEGAL!!!!! - r3zonance, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5And most of those that slagged off the iPod when it first came out were die-hard Mac fans.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/21/2007, -4/+9Mobile Linux is getting nice, and it's fully customizable... I've not been particularly impressed with Microsoft's mobile interfaces...
- tbenathan, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5It's amazing that AT&T's most expensive phone is its best selling.
- l0rdn1k0n, on 10/22/2007, -2/+6Considering the iPhone isn't all that old, it's surprising to see it on that list at all. Good work, Apple.
- johnb10175, on 10/22/2007, -36/+40This is great news for those of us who own and love this product. I can use this info to fight off Microsofties that look for any excuse to downplay the iphone.
- tech42er, on 10/21/2007, -0/+4Very true, but most people think most successful companies are "monopolies", so you're fighting an uphill battle.
- cybermort, on 10/20/2007, -2/+6read in the U.S.
- OHiggins, on 10/21/2007, -0/+4Looks to me like they not only walked in, but rubbed their feet all over Palm's couch.
- chicagodj, on 10/21/2007, -2/+6Remember. Just because you're different doesn't make you useful.
- hmunkey, on 10/20/2007, -0/+4Better support for higher resolutions.
- Jholder112233, on 10/21/2007, -2/+5Poor analogy.
- coltraning, on 10/22/2007, -3/+6"It is not often that I hear people brag about being #4"
You know, I think it's pretty amazing that Apple has been able to make as much headway as it has with its debut cellphone. In such a short period of time, making it to fourth place out of a field of giants is a pretty big accomplishment as far as I can see. Then again, have you seen the thing? It's downright sexy! The iPhone is the porn star of cellphones! - petard, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3No. Nintendo wouldn't develop for the iPhone. They already have 2 handheld systems, one with a touch screen, too.
Also, the iPhone is not innovative. - 80hd, on 10/22/2007, -3/+6I find it impressive that a premium phone is completing with mass produced phones this well. Many people are happy with baseline models.
- fugazied, on 10/22/2007, -1/+4You know the big text? Thats called a heading, if you don't like the topic don't click on it.
If you don't want to read comments by other users, don't read those either.
You might be more comfortable with print media, leave the uncivilised/juvenile internets to the kids? - inkswamp, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4Yes, but to be fair, he did say it back before the price drop so he was partly right. However, if initial sales at the original price were accurate, he was also off-base to some degree. Apple had almost hit the 1 million sales mark by the end of the first month which was something they had planned to achieve over 3-4 months (if reports are accurate.)
- trentpekkala, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4iPhone U2 Edition?
- BlueStarr, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3Dude, I love Digg....their users kick some serious *****. Keep it up.
- kevinmotel, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4they are...useful
- superkendall, on 10/21/2007, -2/+5From the day I got my iPhone I really didn't need to install application because the ones included didn't suck. Using iTunes to activate was easier than activation with other phones, and makes phone updates and synching simple, far more simple than with other phones I've had. I can take a picture and email it to anyone, not just people with MMS - or with a click or two automatically upload it to a web gallery. I get higher quality YouTube video than you do on WiFi (the h.264 codec they use for the iPhone interface is higher quality than what you can get just on teh web at any speed).
So you get ringtones? How special. Have fun with that.
My challenge to you - list the third party applications you have installed you cannot live without. Are you sure they just aren't fixing the things the phone didn't do well to start with? - optophobia, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4Scroll to the bottom of the site and it reads
" Copyright stuff
These aren't our pics. We have credited sources where possible but if you have a VERY SMALL PENIS we will remove your work upon request. Please note that a gallery might have been assembled from multiple places on the internet so make sure you cry about not only the gallery url but also the specific image number(s) when you bother us. You can contact us through the domain whois information."
Woah ...... - coltraning, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2"Nobody is "saving up" to go out an (sic) buy an Iphone (sic)."
*****! I am. Although, I'm going to wait until it has more storage space. - petard, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2The iPhone is NOT a smartphone.
- SirZRX, on 10/21/2007, -5/+7it could be the #1 if it was unlocked and open from the begining
- deadbaby, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2Who would buy the iPhone over the iPod Touch? People who want a phone?

What is Digg?
