- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+52Sim tray == good
- jhodulik, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46Battery capacity of up to 5 hours of talk/video and 16 hours of audio playback. That's very reassuring. Looks like Dvorak, as much as I like the guy, was dead wrong with his claim of 40 minutes of talk time (TWiT #93 - http://www.twit.tv/93 ). Not the best battery life, but far better than what it could have been.
- stukdog, on 10/11/2007, -9/+50Did you say "upgrade"?
- mgkwho, on 10/11/2007, -13/+42Steve Jobs said there was going to be a SIM slot back when he announced the iPhone in January.
I don't understand why everyone's panties were up in a bunch. All they had to do is pay attention.
-=|Mgkwho - HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+34It's on Apple's website.
Massive blog spam. - tacojohn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29yay- Sim slot, decent battery life- 5 hours is better than the iPod with video.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Digg me down, but battery life *IS* going to be a constant concern on the iPhone. It's not unique to Apple's device--it's an issue battled by all smartphones--but Apple has the unusual disadvantage of not having a user replaceable battery. Keep in mind the battery effect is cumulative: Do some web browsing at the airport, watch a movie on the plane, listen to some music, make a few calls, and your battery is shot. Push e-mail and wi-fi are also a huge drain on a phone.
Most people are going to have to charge the iPhone daily, and it won't even make it through a day of heavy usage. It's the price you pay for a large screen, fast processor, and media capabilities. - seventoes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22neither is the ipod videos
- almalax19, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22iTunes doesn't technically say it works with Vista either but it does. Thats what iPhone interfaces to the computer with so most likely it will work.
- cthellis, on 10/11/2007, -5/+26Dvorak is wrong about OH SO MUCH anymore... It's a wonder how one "likes" him except in the "well, he's a good who's been around for a while" way.
Meanwhile, regarding Apple, he's a self-admitted dick on purpose. ( http://www.scripting.com/2006/06/09.html#When:10:38:44PM ) The man has really tossed any scrap of journalistic intergrity or even "pundit interestingness" long ago. - JasonCox, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25It's not like Apple hasnt known Vista has been coming for the past, oh, 'x' years.
- ohmar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17@razrielle, It actually carries a higher voltage than USB. I think USB is 5 V and Firewire is 12 V.
- steelmaverick, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17@JasonCox
It was not Darth Vader that said that, it was Emperor Palpatine. Thus, you should have said Emperor Jobz.
And why is he being dugg down? He was quite funny. Perhaps you do not understand the language? After all, I am proficient in six million forms of communication. - jonahan52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12The same way google maps currently does you type in your start address.
- Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Nobody cares what you prefer.
- NnyDarko, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13This article had nothing to do with your phone. Sure I like my phone too, but I still find it interesting to see what's "under the hood" of the iPhone.
- Universal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11You can always use an external Bluetooth GPS receiver...
- thrallie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Bluetooth GPS? I am buying one for my iPaq. (edit..universal beat me)
Actually, I am not buying an iPhone but I won't diss people who do. It looks super pretty. - dawgma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12but.. actually.. if you could use the iPhone for North America GPS navigation, then holy *****.. suddenly $599 sounds like a bargain to me!
- HA5TY, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11They already said it has vibration
- keneally, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Gizmodo had an interview with someone from Apple about the vibration. According to them, it's gonna be there.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10The IEEE #1394 standard states "Firewire"/"iLink" outputs 45 watts (per port) and up to 30 volts.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13You don't also use the battery on your iPod video for making calls or browsing the Internet over wi-fi. Also if the battery on your iPod dies it doesn't keep you from making an emergency phone call. Battery life IS going to be an issue on the iPhone.
- witte, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9.46" thick? What a clunker. That's EIGHT pennies stacked.
- Vermifax, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10And that's a bad thing......?
- smartmlp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Battery technology needs to hurry up and catch up. Or we need more efficient chips, maybe a combination of both?
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Even if the iPhone can manage 5 hours of video, that's only on a full charge. The phone's standby mode will drain a significant amount of power, and if you're using features like push e-mail the effect will be even greater.
- CIAVT, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13SIM slot, good news!
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13So, you just basically pulled $900 out of your ass, didn't you.
- dallyp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7What I love...is how this article acts like these specs have been under some sort of top security watch...they've been on the iPhone section of apple.com for some time now.
Right under that part that says "Tech Specs"
http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html
"We've obtained the official list of specs that Apple lists for the upcoming device."
HOMIGOD amazing! How'd you do that? a few clicks.
*applauds* - NnyDarko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You just have to love the internet. You can make a obviously sarcastic comment and people won't know what you mean unless you tell them by adding a "/sarcasm".
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The P800 had an app which could work out where it is using phone radio tower signals. You had to tell the phone which physical location matched each radio tower (eg this radio tower is near my house, this one is near my work) but it did some nifty stuff like turning on silent mode automatically when i went to school or changing my ringtone when i went to work.
If Apple could get a list of Cingular's radio towers and match them to physical locations then you have a GPS accurate to within a few dozen metres, more than accurate enough for google maps. - witte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5
Very small. - spookyttws, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Can you put it on vibrate?
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The HTC Hermes (aka Cingular 8525) is available at Amazon for $199 (and frequently $125 or less) despite a list price of $599. There are also programs available (not sure what the 8525 comes with) that give you full screen, full page rendering, and touchscreen based pan and zoom. Instead of widgets it has 10,000 full blown applications available. It has great media capabilities with the ability to stream video over 3G (gotta love Sling). Visual voicemail is available for free through CallWave. I'll sell you an Apple sticker to put on it for $1.
Stop throwing around list prices of phones like anybody actually pays list price for anything but Apple. - thewebguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5SIM Tray + GSM 900/1900 Unlock + T-Mobile
- danpat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Who gives a toss what random phone you have and how much you like it!
Besides that, you have a windows logo for your icon so your agenda is thinly veiled.
Anti-Mac spammer, dugg down. - jerk1off, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@ almalax19
actually under the iTunes Windows Requirements it says Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later, Windows XP or Windows Vista. - teknishn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Amazing how ppl post without knowing wtf theyre talking about. iPhone is pretty much the thinnest phone on the market. Here are some comparisons of other top phones....
RAZR .5 Blackjack .5 Blackberry Pearl .6 all thicker than iPhone at .46 - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Video playback time will depend greatly on the brightness of the screen. It also depends on encoding format (does the iPhone even support more than one codec?), bit rate, whether you've got bluetooth or wi-fi activated, etc.. And yes, battery times are almost always inflated by manufacturers.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I could be wrong, but I don't think GSM networks use aGPS, I believe they provide e911 services (which require location within 100 yards) via tower triangulation. Triangulation isn't accurate enough for navigation, but it would be accurate enough to pull up nearby restaurants.
- Nar1117, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Europe != the whole world.
Only GSM phones use SIM cards. CDMA phones, like some in the US, do not use SIM. Cingular is a GSM carrier in the US, therefore the iPhone will use SIM.
A bunch of people were getting upset because they did not listen to Steve Jobs and thought that Apple had hidden the SIM tray on the iPhone, even though it is a GSM phone.
Apparently, it makes sense to buy a $499 phone, pay $xxx for a contract cancellation to Cingular, and then sell it on eay to work with any GSM carrier. Seems like too much trouble to me. Unlocked iPhones on eBay are going to be so expensive, its not worth it. - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3...actually, according to the MacBreak Weekly rumormill, the unsubsidised price will be $999.
http://www.twit.tv/mbw43 about 11min40s in... - wookitus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Firewire has nothing to do with Airport Extreme.
- bmson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sim slot.
Aren't every phone in the world with a sim slot?
I've never seen a phone in Europe that doesn't have a sim slot.
P.s.
I want 3G into the iPhone before the European release. - razrielle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sim slot means to me that it can be unlocked
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6mobilehavoc - your username aside, I don't think so. It says five hours of talk or video playback, and sixteen of audio. They're pretty standard things to do, and there aren't a whole lot of things that would impact battery life under those conditions. Scrolling through songs frequently in audio playback, I suppose, but talking and watching video are pretty straightforward. I happened to spot the packaging for a blackberry earlier today, and it said four hours of talk time (LESS than the iPhone), and up to eight days of standby. Steve said _exactly_ the same thing in the Keynote six months ago (though he never touched on standby time; I'd expect it to be in the same range, but most people with Blackberries charge them every night and I'd expect most iPhone users would as well).
