- TTURabble, on 11/17/2008, -2/+43I have an iPhone so I can say with utmost certainty, gaming on the iPhone just isn't that great. Even if the game is good, it chews through your battery and then you can't use it as a phone, so whats the point?
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/17/2008, -0/+35Except the DS has a D-Pad and buttons which are MUCH better than iPhone touchscreen d-pad and buttons.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -10/+30yeah....touchscreen gaming on a tiny screen is the wave of the future.
(never mind that massive hand that is blocking your view of the action) - bjs3171, on 11/17/2008, -3/+19doesn't matter how many times the question is asked. the answer is still no.
- robEstyles, on 11/17/2008, -6/+19Yes cause gamers would much rather buy an iphone and pay a monthly service charge to play games than just 150 bucks for a DS
- directive0, on 11/17/2008, -1/+14Fungifred: Go play an accelerometer based game on a bumpy subway or bus. Go ahead, I'll wait here for you to get back and tell me how useless it was.
- ntlpunk, on 11/17/2008, -1/+12yes, iphone has an accelerometer. great, now I can do full hand bowling motions on my very public bus ride or while im taking a ***** in a tight stall.
- DanteDefiance, on 11/17/2008, -1/+10This is great and all, but the iPhone will never replace dedicated video game consoles. As it is, the games on the iPhone are just superior cell phone games. In my opinion, unless Nintendo* themselves produce a phone, we're never going to see true gaming goodness on a cell phone.
*I say Nintendo and not Sony because Sony would probably focus more on multimedia than dedicated gaming. - lunarworks, on 11/17/2008, -3/+11Damn, I didn't know I couldn't play games on my iPod Touch. I guess I'd better delete them...
- suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -0/+7games on the ipod/iphone are really just a proof of concept. They feel like flash games at best. Albeit some of the games are well made.the games will never be as good or polished as those on the psp/ds, because:
1. gaming makes ipod/iphone hemorrhage battery life.
2. my hand is blocking the screen half the time (touch hockey)
3. no buttons/tactile feedback. touch screen gaming really sucks. (tap tap revenge just feels awkward).
4. all the games suck right now.
apple should really concentrate on making the iphone a better smartphone (copy and paste?! really?, less crashing) rather than the holy grail of portable devices, and the fan boys should really stop writing articles that make it out to be.
for the record, i have an ipod touch, ds and a blackberry. - evanbooth, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7I'm skeptical...
Seems like with as often as the phone crashes when you're playing CPU-intensive games, I'm inclined to think that the iPhone is getting a little big for its britches. - Dumbledorito, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6Most games on cell phones suck, with or without touchscreens and accelerometers.
- primalsteel, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8Those are some big goals! Go big or go home I guess!
- mytCbumps, on 11/17/2008, -4/+9Maybe 3rd gen iPhone, the ones out now are crap. They're okay, but not for a power user.
- armour, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5who cares what It can do I'm still not taking my the DS away from my 8 year old and giving him a Iphone. Yes it may play games but the majority of people I see with DS are kids and at $130 a pop VS an Iphone price I don't think Nintendo is very scared. All hype it you ask me
- PolarBearFire, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Apple is going to be as succesful in portable gaming as they are in pc gaming. That is, limited and not market leader. Nintendo and Sony has better games and can create the hardware if need be. There is a good reason why there's so few games native on the Mac.
- MrDoug, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5The last time Apple went after Nintendo, it didn't work out so well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandai_Pippin - MrDoug, on 11/17/2008, -3/+7One word...Pippin
- shallabal316, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4Just makes no sense. Just because iPhone has enough power to handle gaming doesn't mean it should be a freaking console. Playing Quake on iphone SUCKS due to mediocre controls. The only way it would work would be a controller that plugged into the sync port, and that would still be inconvenient.
In a word, stop. - candysweet4u, on 11/16/2008, -5/+8I think their referring to the future! as stated taking aim! try reading before you dive all over something!
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3Yea seriously, how "fun" is it going to be playing a game using the accelerometer and bumps/turns messing with your iPhone. Not saying it can't be used but when you use touch screen and the accelerometer as your primary input device you can't give the player a long gaming experience. Also imagine playing some shooter or RTS and your finger/hand is blocking a part of the screen when you touch.
The iPhone's purpose is phone first, MID/Multimedia second, gaming device third. - moxley, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2>>where's my lode runner?
***** A' That is a great game! I got it first when I was a kid on my Apple II.
I got a version when I had a treo (before my Iphone) that was only okay....But for the Iphone if they did it right (the level designer/creator MAKES that game and is a must) it would be so awesome!
They could maybe even include a second version that uses the accelerometer and other features that the iphone has.....
But I think to really 'kill it' they would need to do it right with a proper version with the level creator and the ability to upload and share your levels with the community. - u8myfoood, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2It is because of the cheaper prices of games, compared to the NDS that allows it to win out, and can also be downloaded on the go. Then again, you can't just add something as simple as a R4 or M3 to play the games right away.
But one major problem is the lack of real buttons which don't allow individuals to button-smash, and it is quite hard to fit 2 shoulder buttons, a d-pad, start, select, and 4 other buttons onto the touch screen, and still have a big enough area to continue playing games effectively. - bjs3171, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2wouldn't that be the only major problem?
- jmuh, on 11/17/2008, -4/+6I guess it depends what kind of games you want. It takes me 90 minutes to get home in the evenings on the train (in the morning, I usually try to sleep). A few weeks ago, I bought a DS Lite. But I only ended up using it a couple times. The games are kind of "expensive" and I'm not really a gamer to begin with. I'm more interested in puzzle type games. Plus, I realized that the more games I purchased, the more little cases I'd have to carry around with me. I then finally just got the 32GB iPod touch, and I'm much more satisfied. I've used it every day since I've gotten it, and I've only watched a couple videos. I mostly occupy myself with the apps, which are relatively inexpensive and all in one place. I know, I'm probably different than most of you guys here, but I just wanted to share my experience.
- evanbooth, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2CRUCIFY HIM!!!
:) - BxBoy, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2a modded PSP is so much more useful than a stock PSP.
- smoger, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3No, stop it.
- mlvassallo, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3Never mind the part about the iPhone being an expensive and exclusive (two year contract with one service in the US) piece of hardware that won't be that accessible to handled gaming's biggest market- KIDS!
Even if you say "They can have an iPod Touch, that eliminates the need for an iPhone" that unit is STILL more expensive than a Nintendo DS or PSP and not as durable.
Unless Apple collaborates with one or the other I don't see them taking much if any of the market share. - Urkel, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2This is another case of the media trying to force a story. I believe the iPhone has some cool apps, but in terms of games then this is not the "funnest" gaming experience out there.
And because of that then Nintendo and Sony will continue to rule the gaming world while the iPhone/Touch will be the media-darling that gets all the praise but none of the players. - NovaPrime9, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Wow... I never heard of that thing. Thanks for the info. :)
- irishjays, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Guys, bought an Iphone, and a bought a couple games to see what they were like and capable of. Everyone will do this, everyone will also realize that the only games that are good on phones, are time-wasters, and those are quickly replaced by apps like facebook, and social interaction as they are free and content always changes.
- u8myfoood, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1@bjs3171
No self replacable battery - Ediebriquette, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1what was the question?
- Theresa42J, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Apple pie!
- se7en11, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1or add a controller peripheral (would be great with the emulators)
- seattlegirluw, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1It's not really so big, when you consider how much Nintendo is stagnating. Apple has innovation after innovation. Nintendo is pretty much down to the DS. I think Apple can take 'em.
By the way, since I can't shout to you: Sorry I was gone for the past week or so. Health issues for me and my husband kept me off Digg. But I'm back now and happy to digg the stuff you send my way. Hope you'll re-add me to your friends list. - Aitese, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Because iPhone games are all free?
- Aitese, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2400? I challenge you to name 30.
- shiftless, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Only if there are tactile buttons. I've tried a few iPhone games and I currently do not enjoy just tapping a screen. I don't quite understand how they plan to beat the DS. No way!
- tendonut, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1But a modded PSP with no PSP games isn't doing Sony any good. The money is made with software. So modded system is marked off as a loss if Sony is selling them for less then production cost.
- Narbo, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1There are some game genres that would work really well on the iPhone. Strategy RPG for example. A Final Fantasy Tactics/Front Mission/Spectral Forces game would be AMAZING on the iPhone.
- inotocracy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sorry, but the iPhone/touch will never really rival the DS or PSP. It just doesn't have the graphical power, not to mention no tactile feedback. It will however thrive on simple games like Peggle (whens Peggle for the touch getting released anyways?).
- StolenLamp, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Well it does talk about the iPhone, so how far in the future can that be?
- tendonut, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't that count as good journalism? Giving a compare and contrast scenario? Carmack clearly disagrees with Jeffery.
- insanewriters, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1This article is merely guessing at what Apple's marketing strategy is.
Go back to elementary marketing and think about market segmentation. The Nintendo DS and iPhone are for completely separate target markets and do not directly compete. Apple is not trying to market the iPhone as the best handheld gaming device - it's trying to market it as the best phone on which to play games. - kotatsu, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1It's comical in the extreme to think that an expensive, delicate device with no buttons like the iPhone will ever be able to compete with the DS. Nobody, not even Sony with the might of the Playstation brand have ever been able to seriously challenge Nintendo in this space.
Oh, and so far out of the 15 million iPhone games available, you can count the number of vaguely passable ones on a couple of fingers. - adammharvey, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1and there still trying for this big push. I love my iphone but not as a gaming machine
- revenz, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1why carry around another device when you can game on your iphone? for diehard fans sure they will, but the average user who just wants to kill some time playing a game, an iphone will do the job, and do it very well.
it may not be able to do the same games (having no buttons), but it can do different games, and do them very well. RTS's on an iphone work very well. "Field Runners" which is a tower defense clone is brilliant, i haven't been able to stop playing in about 2 weeks now. - jamesdew, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1expensive games ey
