- abbathdoom, on 09/17/2009, -2/+20That cyborg video effect is awesome.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/17/2009, -1/+14Everyone keeps burying me for asking this, but I've never received an answer, so I shall persist:
What's so important about having a camera on your MP3 player? We all have cameras on our cell phones already - if it means making the iPod cheaper, why not just leave it out?
I just don't understand it. - SteveMax, on 09/17/2009, -0/+6Can an app add a FM radio to a device? If it doesn't, the app will be restricted to Internet radio, and therefore only work under WiFi. That's totally different than an onboard FM radio.
- VanillaBabies, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5In the past the Nike+ system required two pieces, one that plugged in to the connector on the bottom of the ipod, and a second in the shoe. The new ipod nano only requires the shoe piece, much like the new iphones.
- TylerDuhrdan, on 09/17/2009, -2/+7Apple could have added this stuff to the Touch, would have been appealing to buy a touch with all of the iPhone's features including a radio, but since it would interfere with the sales of the iPhone I wont be buying either of them.
one of the biggest things we wanted on the Touch we have now is a radio, my radio adaptor for my 5th gen video does not work on the touch.
My iPods are going to have to die before I buy another music player, and at that point, it might not be an Ipod at all.
Camera placement on the nano is kind of *****. - hollismb, on 09/17/2009, -1/+6The title of the paragraph contradicts the paragraph itself: "Built-in Nike+"
"iPod nano users have always been able to use their devices with the Nike+ system, which goes a step beyond the traditional pedometer (no pun intended) to actually track your distance and speed while running. However, users have to connect a dongle to their devices that talks wirelessly to the shoe transmitter."
I'm pretty sure that the Nike + is NOT 'built in', and you do have to have the wireless adapter dongle connected still. I asked about this in the Apple store the other day as well..... Someone commented on the ARS article with this link as well: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3808 - mywhitenoise, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5For real. I'd rather have 160GBs of storage, than 32GB with internet.
With that said, why the hell did the nano get video but the Touch didn't? - diemunkiesdie, on 09/17/2009, -1/+6Possible Reasons:
1. Camera on my phone sucks.
2. I would need a cable to connect my phone to my PC to transfer off video, and I don't have one.
3. I already have the mp3 player in my hand while my phone is in my pocket, this means I can start recording much quicker, when something is going down. - alazapram, on 09/17/2009, -2/+6Not everyone has a camera on their phone. And if you do have a low-end camera with a phone, chances are you don't have 16GB of storage space on that phone to hold your videos. I used to have a low-end phone that could do video. Its quality was way lower than the iPods, and was restricted to a couple minutes.
- kelly, on 09/17/2009, -4/+8I don't have nor have I ever had a video camera on my cell phone.
- skate3214, on 09/17/2009, -0/+4And next year Apple will bring out the new nano that can take still pictures too!
- fungie5, on 09/17/2009, -0/+4Um.... why did it take them so long to get the Nano this far?
Nearly two years ago, I bought a small MP4 player while I was overseas in Asia.
It had -
-2.4inch TFT screen 320x240
-8GB Flash memory
-SD Card Memory slot
-Supported a large number of audio and video formats (it even played back .flv files that I ripped from YouTube!)
-Supported LRC lyrics display
-Recorded video in mp4 format
-Had 1.3 Mega-pixel camera that had digital zoom, picture and lighting settings including several effects like negative, black and white and others that I don't remember the names of.
-Photo gallery
-FM Radio with 20 station preset and the ability to record audio from stations
-Built-in Microphone for voice recording
-Was able to read .txt files
And this was out 2 years ago and cost me around $120...
So what took them so long?
- Rudegar, on 09/17/2009, -1/+5it's a bit meh! imho
the middle brother of the ipod family one could say - ScientistBlah, on 09/17/2009, -1/+5They missed the 3rd generation nano in their pic.
- dkla, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3So it can take videos but not still pictures?!?!? WTF?
- googooly, on 09/17/2009, -2/+5good old times when all mp3 players were only "MP3 players" and nothing els
- ngmcs8203, on 09/17/2009, -2/+4And I'd rather carry around 1 device instead of 4 (phone, mp3, video and radio)
- aolshove, on 09/17/2009, -1/+3I think it was an excellent review of a cool little player. I'm in for one.
- stuartjmoore, on 09/17/2009, -1/+3I'd rather not waste my phone's battery.
I'd rather not pay for a camera I don't want.
I'd rather have a high quality video camera.
I'd rather have a lens. - korvan504521, on 09/17/2009, -0/+2but. . . was it painted a pretty color? hmmm?
- MScrip, on 09/17/2009, -0/+2People have been buying pocket video cameras for years... i.e. the Flip Video.
It's not so much a "video camera on your MP3 player"... it's a "video camera in something you might already have with you at the time."
Yes... cell phones have had video cameras for years. So, how can you explain the popularity of the Flip Video and other pocket camcorders?
It's not a bad move for Apple. The Nano is the best selling MP3 player ever... so, now all the new ones will have video cameras. - MacParrot, on 09/17/2009, -0/+2Well...IT'S life anyway
- hollismb, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1Incorrect, according to apple's own website... here's the quote from the link above:
"To use your iPod nano (5th generation) with your Nike + iPod Sport Kit
1. Attach the Nike + iPod receiver to your iPod nano (5th generation)."
I confirmed that, in store, the Nike+ item on the Menu in the new Nano's doesn't show up by default either. Unless one of you actually has the new Nano, and can prove me wrong. I know that the 3GS does have it built in though: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2928. Note that there's also no 'linking' support page for the Nano. The Nano page also states "Grab your iPod nano, your Nike+ shoes, and the Nike + iPod Sport Kit (available separately). Put the sensor in the built-in pocket just under the insole. Then connect the receiver to your iPod nano. The sensor tracks your run, then sends the data to your iPod nano."
And, most runners know that there's no reason to buy the shoes. You just buy a little shoe wallet or pouch that goes over your laces to hold the chip. - valkyries, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1Ipod Mini 4life
- TBobes, on 09/18/2009, -0/+1You can only listen to radio through your headphones, and not through your speakers? What is that all about? (I'm assuming you could still plug in speakers into the headphone jack and they would work with radio, it must not work on speakers that have an iPod dock, am I right on this assumption?)
- Noein, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1You are right, I stand corrected. This really sucks.
- Noein, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1VanillaBabies is right, both the new nano and iPhone 3GS have the adapter dongle built-in. This might save you a little bit money since Apple sell the shoe transmitters separately at a cheaper price than the shoe transmitter + dongle kit (due to the fact the shoe transmitter battery is not replaceable without cracking it open). But it's not like the saving matters much though when the shoes themselves cost $100.
- Rudegar, on 09/17/2009, -2/+3it can only record video not take pictures as far as I can tell
kinda the reverse story of iphone - hollismb, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1The worst part is that after you buy the kit for $29, you still have to buy an armband of some sort for $29, so you're up to $209 for a freakin' Nano. It's also a real pain in the ass to monitor or split running times via something strapped to the outside of your arm.
You're better off just buying a shuffle (which is lighter for running anyway, and has a clip built into it), and a $35 dollar Timex watch at Target or something, then charting your runs via Google Maps and logging them into Runnersworld.com or something similar later. - sameer768, on 09/17/2009, -1/+2can't you get radio apps on the touch?
- randyrandall, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1If it was higher capacit, def would have upgraded my 4th gen. But it was not to be..
- digjam, on 09/17/2009, -0/+1Lot more p0rn will be made now that iphones and ipods have video cameras..
- airstrike, on 09/18/2009, -2/+2"3. I already have the mp3 player in my hand while my phone is in my pocket, this means I can start recording much quicker, when something is going down."
as much as i like this, when you really think about it, it makes no sense. yeah, let's spend more resources, charge more for an mp3 player and build yet another sub-par video camera just so that i won't miss those 2 seconds it would take me to get my phone/camera from my pocket.
check out http://www.worldmapper.org/textindex/text_depletio ... - lynx44, on 09/17/2009, -2/+2Not that I'm interested in buying one, but my phone doesn't do video, it only does stills. Technically this could fill that gap for me, but I'm not really interested in having a pocket sized video camera. Actually, it would probably be cheaper for me to just buy another cell phone that does video recording anyway.
- Grommy, on 09/17/2009, -2/+2damn check that ipod out!
- Mattevil, on 09/17/2009, -3/+3homemade porn after finding a hottie jogging?
- mywhitenoise, on 09/17/2009, -3/+3phone, dont own one never will.
mp3, iPod...that's all I need.
video, no thanks. Rather watch film and TV series on a nice HDTV.
radio, haha...who the ***** listens to radio? - readme, on 09/17/2009, -8/+2Love my 3G Nano fatty, but might have to get one of these for the camera alone.
