- JoeNaguib, on 11/12/2009, -7/+85I would have expected a more visible increase in profits from the iPod... Interesting spike in the past 2 years.
- swimmer88, on 11/12/2009, -1/+60This chart shows cash, not profits. Whatever profits are leftover after Apple spends them on new projects end up in their cash account.
- rogeris, on 11/12/2009, -8/+56Hey, remember that time when Apple attacked Microsoft for pouring all that money into an ad campaign? ...
- BoneStamp, on 11/12/2009, -0/+41They should build a really awesome go-kart track. That's what I would do.
- Locastus, on 11/12/2009, -2/+32Listen to you all shouting about your OS like it matters.
A computer is a tool. Stop acting like one. - Braxo, on 11/12/2009, -3/+31Apple last year spent $500 million in advertising.
Microsoft spent $1.4 billion. Dell even spent $810 million. On the phone side, Blackberry spent around $350 - below413, on 11/12/2009, -2/+25corrected:
PRO TIP:
Whenever the next word begins with a vowel SOUND, use "an" instead of "a". - kevinmoore, on 11/12/2009, -3/+24One could say that the switch to Intel chips helped them out quite a bit. I know it helped me make the switch. I don't think I would've bought a PPC machine.
- borez, on 11/12/2009, -7/+27Looks down at perfectly CNC machined aluminium box.... That's no computer, that's a piece of ***** art.
- kthoma22, on 11/12/2009, -4/+24So how about Apple start paying a dividend to share holders such as myself.
- tnoy, on 11/12/2009, -3/+20If they put the money into R&D, they wouldn't have the large cash reserve.
- amanraj, on 11/12/2009, -8/+24A ever increasing chart
- BoneStamp, on 11/12/2009, -4/+17PRO TIP:
Whenever the next word begins with a vowel, use "an" instead of "a". - randomerratum, on 11/12/2009, -2/+14I started using macs about 8 years ago because my profession required it (final cut pro, dvd studio pro etc)
I made my personal computer "switch" about 4 years ago because I was finding my self constantly far less frustrated on my work computer then my home computer and bought myself a powermac G5
I bought a MacBook Pro 3 months ago and 2 days later, I looked down at the keyboard, the trackpad and that leading edge of the base and the design just hit me-
Just like the first time I realized there was a good reason trekkers loved Star Trek - I suddenly GOT the cult-of-mac phenomenon.
It's all about the synergy between technology, design-aesthetic and intuitive user interface - that's not an easy balance to achieve well and Apple seems the only computer company to be concerned with it's importance. - immatellyouwhat, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11You should also put an *n
- serif69, on 11/12/2009, -2/+13The stock has gone up over 600% in 5 years, and you're complaining about not getting dividends?
Source: http://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&q=NASD ... - noPCtoday, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11it has to be the go-karts with flames on them.
- Locastus, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10Wow.
Did none of you guys see the 'slash s' at the end? - bencanfield, on 11/12/2009, -2/+12That's a interesting way to put it.
- fahrvergnuugen, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10Because despite the recession, Apple posted record profits. Imagine what will happen when the economy recovers.
- RyeBrye, on 11/12/2009, -4/+13Perhaps for its time XP was acceptable, but XP is far from perfect.
- nicktomyskins, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8Blackberry spent only $350... that's unbelievable!!
- tnoy, on 11/12/2009, -1/+8All our G5 Macs at work are starting to become rather useless as more developers drop support for it and require Intel chips.
- borez, on 11/12/2009, -1/+8What's that you say, use an "an" instead of an "a"
- BoneStamp, on 11/12/2009, -2/+9Not everyone plays computer games.
- sirhomer, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7Dividends are really not that great. They have a large administrative expense (often higher then the dividend payout itself), because they must mail checks out to every stock holder, sometimes checks for 30 or 50 cents. As long as they keep it in the bank, any profit they make is anyway reflected in the stock price, because you a shareholder own a "part" of that $34 billion in Apple's bank account.
- badqat, on 11/12/2009, -3/+10How does one get 10% of the games? You mean those for OS X? You realize Mac users can run Windows, no?
My 2008 MacBook Pro gets a Windows 7 score of 5.5. And it games just fine. - soopafly, on 11/12/2009, -3/+9Do all Windows users just game? I'm really starting to think so.
- borez, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7And a loop the loop.
- kthoma22, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6Hey that's good but it can not be expected for Apple to maintain that kind of growth for the long term. Dividends can reflect good long term growth especially if used to purchase more shares in the company like I do.
- borez, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6Don't you mean a really awesome F1 circuit.
- jsg7, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7That's an useful tip...
HEY!!! - smashblu, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5There is no "if", the company doesn't give dividends. My point was that they are not using money to give dividends to stock holders.
- Super6, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5Well this chart measures liquid cash
- Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5People are people. Some of them are idiots. Some of them are smart. Some of the idiots use Macs. Some of them don't. Some of the smart people use Macs. Some of them don't. Conversely, some of the idiots have irrational prejudice against people who don't use the same OS... but none of the smart people have that prejudice.
- ileftfark, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5A member since 2006, and you don't know how to click "Reply"?
- BossKey, on 11/12/2009, -2/+7Probably because most of the people who left Windows for the Mac were more interested in getting real work done instead of futzing with a glorified game box?
I'll spend more if I keep my computer proportionally longer, and that has happened. Amortized over time, given how long I go between new machines I probably don't spend any more on a Mac than my friends who seem to upgrade their PCs constantly. - ileftfark, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5Source: http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/1 ...
- ogkk, on 11/12/2009, -2/+7I love my MBP :)
- rwhite1917, on 11/12/2009, -5/+10They are obviously making gobs of money on their products....however, their products are far and away superior to their competitors for the average consumer. People are willing to pay a premium for ease of use, usefulness, compatibility, and reliability (not to mention amazing design). No other company has figured out how to package all those concepts together into their product mix, and individual products-Apple has-and as previously stated, rightly or wrongly, people are willing to pay a premium.
- hmar2, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5"I still don't understand why some people use "an" before words like 'historic.'"
It's New England's fault, primarily around the Boston area, for refusing to pronounce the letter h. I have never understood why. - macslut, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4Apple has too much cash. The problem is that they aren't showing a return on the cash. If you're an investor, you're not going to want to invest in cash when you buy stock. If you wanted to do that, you'd put your money in the bank.
Apple should look at putting that money to use. For example, Apple could buy Adobe. Adobe has a better price to earnings ratio than Apple and a better profit margin than Apple. In other words, Apple could put *some* of it's cash horde into buying Adobe and the results would be favorable to Apple's bottom line even if Apple ran it as a separate entity. It certainly would get a better return from Adobe than sitting on the cash like it is now with interest rates where they are.
Of course, there would be all kinds of benefits for Apple owning Adobe, including leverage against Microsoft and the ability to build up iLife and migrate users to Pro suites from there.
It also would give Apple the ability to better shape the industry in ways that's favorable to it...for example, Flash? Apple could optimize it for the Mac and iPhone or change the direction of where Flash is going that benefits Apple.
I'm not suggesting that this would or would not be good for the industry, but as a stockholder, it makes sense. - Sraser, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4I'm pretty sure that's where the taxes come in.
Or do you mean we should just start robbing? - BossKey, on 11/12/2009, -7/+11Yeah, those superficial fashionistas at JPL and their trendy, useless Macs
http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/people/20040103_Sp_EDL_ ... - smashblu, on 11/12/2009, -8/+12You'd rather have dividends than for the company to filter that money back into R&D and keep making profit?
- Josexph, on 11/12/2009, -4/+7I enjoy Apples products here and there every now and then. But am I the only one that hates the fanbois that are miles up their ass?
- kelliillek, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3hmm. . . I wonder why my whole department was laid off in Austin, then.
- GothAlice, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3@borez Not just vowels, but vowel sounds. E.g. an HTML markup language. (Eich Tee Em Ell)
- fortheworld, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4My iPod has not broken yet, and my Mac runs Windows XP (when using BootCamp) exceptionally well. The drivers for all the hardware are great - especially the audio converters. I don't know if it justifies such a price difference, but my Macbook runs rings around my girlfriends Dell laptop running Vista. Build quality alone is far above what most manufacturers turn out. If all you want to do is play games though, that's okay too.
- bknoll22, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I'm legitimately curious as to where you got those statistics? I would like to take a look at them
