- mxcl, on 10/29/2007, -13/+99I use Vista, Ubuntu and Tiger all at once at work since I develop a cross platform application.
I can't stand Vista. It's apalling. Usable? Hardly. Colours that are hard to distinguish, saturations that give no contrast. Tiny controls in Explorer. Amazingly worse common dialogs for operations like copying. The Start Menu is better. Explorer has some improvements. Internet Explorer is actually pretty good in a lot of ways, but ***** in other more important ways. Like irritating dialogs that interrupt the work flow. Overal vista is slow, unstable, unusable, and has massive holes in its completeness.
Ubuntu is great. I use it mostly, there is nothing better for development and application variety.
I love OSX best though. The dock is superior to the taskbar once you've gotten used to the way the Mac works. It took me a few months to stop hating the lack of one icon per window. After I got used to using expose properly the dock is far superior as a combination launcher/app switcher/systray. One icon for all windows of an app type and its systray icon? Ace actually. Easily see what is running because you have big icons? Ace. Etc.
OSX is a developers dream, UNIX and a well thought out, amazingly polished GUI. If you use OSX for just a few weeks you'll see how amazingly unpolished vista AND xp are.
Sure I'm still a programmer so you can discount my opinions. But at least I tried all three thoroughly. - RipThe5y5tem, on 10/22/2007, -9/+49(Will be the first ***** in line next friday)
- SpacePirate, on 10/18/2007, -2/+29I could have sworn it was Windows Uista.
- marvinmatthew, on 10/18/2007, -2/+26"If you voted for Leopard you must be a fanboy, there's simply no other explanation. It could never be that people actually think Leopard will be a better OS? No way, never." - Taken directly from the article's description.
Where was that a quote from? Did the submitter quote himself? - colincornaby, on 10/18/2007, -1/+24The poll didn't ask if you liked Leopard. It asked if you plan on switching to it.
- mrmacky, on 10/18/2007, -1/+24I hate OS's, Punch Cards for life is currently ahead of "sticking with Tiger".
- crackah, on 10/19/2007, -9/+29Oh yeah! web polls are always right yeah?
- ThreeDee912, on 10/21/2007, -2/+19(Will be the fanboy who pre-orders it online and still gets it next Friday without waiting in any lines)
- ro4ers, on 10/18/2007, -1/+17My, dear man,. have you even used OS X? Any version? I have. And I have also used XP, Vista, Fedora distrb. and Ubuntu distrb. I simply LOVE the eye candy that comes with compiz and, as I am a gamer, I also love XP, but never have I used a more complete system than Tiger., and, in the coming days, I hold a belief,no, actually I can feel , that Leopard is gonna kick ass. No, really, OS X ftw. Good looking, easy to use, has nice progs. Lots better than Win. Do a favour and check other OS'S out and not dish about.
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -6/+21I've been a Mac user for over 13 years and I am surprised that an OS that isn't even out yet 'won' this poll. This is purely a popularity contest. Mac-related websites used to be so awesome, now the average Mac commenter is an *****. The internet is an *****.
- xGrill, on 10/18/2007, -1/+16Will someone fill in the blanks for me?
- soopafly, on 10/18/2007, -1/+15http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/
- ericdano, on 10/18/2007, -5/+18After spending a bunch of hours messing with an XP machine that had 200+ viruses and ***** on it, and then to have to reinstall Windows only to lose all the programs........even though they are there.....
I'll take OS X to that any day - adrock, on 10/18/2007, -13/+24Anybody who visits engadget regularly knows that almost 1 in every 5 posts is about an Apple product. So it does not surprise me that the majority of people still reading their blog are fans of Apple. Also what is Apples market share up to these days (i know it is growing but still) 6%? Come on guys. This pole represents .005% of the average consumer and means absolutely nothing!
- revarien, on 10/18/2007, -2/+13And the biggest flamebait thread begins! Mortal Kombat! (sp on purpose)
- Gloony, on 11/13/2007, -1/+11Fortunately for Apple, OS X doesn't rely on user-ability - or did you mean usability?
- macgecko, on 10/18/2007, -1/+10As much as I would like the free shirt for being one of the first 500 people in line at that Apple store I think I will just pre-order a family pack and be done with it.
- jalexhall1989, on 10/20/2007, -3/+12I JUST CAN"T HANDLE IT!?!?
- BlueStarr, on 10/18/2007, -1/+103Q 07 it's up to 8%
http://www.macrumors.com/2007/10/17/apples-3rd-qua ... - ThreeDee912, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Like that one from MSNBC (or whatever it was) with Ron Paul having something like 80% of the votes.
- AZooYorkMystery, on 10/20/2007, -1/+10I find that quite often, customers who are satisfied w/ tiger (or any mac operating system) are mistaken for fanboys. Just cuz you like a product does mean you're saying, "OH YEAHZ? WEL OSX LEOPARDS GONNA HAV ICHAT BACKDROPZ!"
Sure, I can operate OSX 15x better than Windows, but gimme a break. - inactive, on 10/19/2007, -8/+17What your choice says about you.
Apple's OS X Leopard 21558 (43.6%) Geniuses
Screw Leopard, I'm sticking with Tiger 1309 (2.6%)Not ready for change but are still smart.
Microsoft's Windows Vista 7194 (14.5%)Dumbasses
Screw Vista, I'm sticking with XP 10671 (21.6%)Smarter than the Vista dumbasses.
Ubuntu's Gutsy Gibbon 4118 (8.3%)Cheap
Screw Ubuntu, I'm using another distro and/or BSD, etc. 1019 (2.1%)Confused and cheap
DOS FOREVA! 1309 (2.6%)Either old school or thought they'd be funny.
I hate operating systems. Punch cards for life. 2302 (4.7%)2302 thought they'd be "original" and choose this. - monsterofNone, on 10/18/2007, -3/+11maybe, after this poll, engadget will realize the size of their apple demographic is and adjusttheir coverage to match.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -5/+13Did you really need to turn this into a game of hangman? Fill in the ***** blanks for us.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/22/2007, -2/+10(Will be *a friend of* the jerk downloading the GM off newsgroups a couple days before)
- WiseWeasel, on 10/18/2007, -0/+8You do NOT want to mess with the hard core card punchers! They're worse than Atari fans!
- brendangenius, on 10/18/2007, -25/+32Because it isn't because its a more advanced OS, visually and in terms of user-ability and stability. I don't bash Windows users, every OS has its ups and downs, but then there's ignorance.
- mxcl, on 10/18/2007, -3/+10As it happens I'm using Gutsy and we have a Leopard install here at Last.fm too. Leopard's new bells and whistles are ace, but I can't judge it yet since I've not used it for any length of time. Gutsy is Ubuntu++ like usual. Ubuntu is a lovely Linux distro that just works. It works far easier in fact than Windows does for me generally. Printing just worked much to my shock and awe. I couldn't be arsed to figure out how to set up a printer on Vista.
- rstarr, on 10/22/2007, -2/+9(Will be right back after these messages)
- dagamer34, on 10/18/2007, -0/+7XP has it's faults but because it's 6 years old, I don't complain too much about. Vista on the other hand.... Let's just say I switched to my MacBook Pro because of that sorry excuse for an OS.
- Burn, on 10/19/2007, -1/+7So even though Apple are sensible enough to sell *5* licenses of their 'Ultimate Edition' for less than MS sell a single license of most SKUs of Vista, we should still try to find the best way to rip them off?
No wonder most software companies implement annoying activation features. - mxcl, on 10/18/2007, -1/+6You'll note I said I couldn't be arsed to figure it out. There is a difference. As I recall, it didn't find the printer I wanted and I decided to go to lunch rather than piss about.
- bubba9999, on 10/18/2007, -2/+7aka, a lie.
- iFungus, on 10/18/2007, -4/+9Although this poll is just for fun, I really love it when people say this for serious polls: "The poll only had 5000 people. BIASED."
Take some statistics, guys! - monsterofNone, on 10/18/2007, -2/+7i've taken some statistics and it's not the size of the poll, it's the randomness of the sampling that matters. 5000 people on an internet poll is probably more biased than 500 randomly sampled participants.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5Don't we hear enough OS warring without posting a flamebait poll? Seriously, what is the point of this? The only value I can see in this poll is from Engadget's perspective, where it drives up ad revenue as fanboys sling mud at eachother.
- Ireland, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6Yes, it was a made up quote. An aggregation of all the quotes over there if you will.
- rebotfc, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4The thing with Vista is that most of the things they've added have either been a pain in the butt, or not very helpful at all. I mean it looks nicer, but really how much does it help general OS functions and useage.
Whereas Leopard has added loads and loads of stuff that I use daily, I mean nearly every new addition is helpful and useful.
Vista just seemed like change for change sake, Leopard actually seems to have a plan and coherence behind what they've done. - klaupacius, on 10/18/2007, -0/+4Different strokes I guess. I bought a Macbook Pro and never looked back. Well I had XP installed for a while, but now that I can do everything on OS X, I took it off. I'd rather have the hard drive space thanks.
- mal1964, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5The OS I use was the best fit for my needs, What does the vote accomplish?
- Iriel, on 10/18/2007, -2/+6While I see where you're coming from, Vista got bashed because Microsoft only makes one service pack / OS every century or so, and this time- it really sucked. So not only was it terrible, but late as well. When an OS can't even run properly with 4GB of RAM, you can add ANYTHING to make the article more entertaining in its bash-fest (^_-)
- blorc, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3It's actually 8% as Blue mentioned above, and Apple's growth is actually tripling current PC growth.
- proliance, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Did this poll ask me to vote for an OS that isn't out yet?
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3FINISH HIM!
- SuperSunny, on 10/18/2007, -1/+4You also kinda forgot the main key thing. Apple doesn't market their products towards people looking for the highest rig for gaming. They market their products to digital artists, switchers, and people who want to start learning on the computer.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Any takers on Cougar being the name of the next release?
- mxcl, on 10/18/2007, -4/+7I find your opinion astonishing. Windows is just so awful. Espeically if you're a programmer. Visual Studio is almost great, but only if you use MS technologies IMO.
I used Windows most of my life, it's a poorly designed mess I have concluded. - electricalen, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Interesting how Ubuntu Gutsy is 4 times more popular according to this poll than all other Linux/BSD distros combined. The results are obviously bogus, but still surprising.
