- Erfus, on 06/11/2009, -5/+165The price of the phone is near irrelevant. It's the $1000+ yearly cost that one incurs that is the bitch. A decrease of $100 is 5% over two years. Woo hoo.
- fandyllic, on 06/11/2009, -7/+93Buried. As stated above a few times, unless AT&T lowers the service costs, a $99 iPhone doesn't mean j@ck sh!t.
- freediverx, on 06/11/2009, -4/+68Who the hell cares about the $99 purchase price when the service plan is going to cost that much per month? I can't believe people would be stupid enough to sacrifice a bunch of features for such an insignificant savings relative to the total cost of owning the phone.
- Tempest261, on 06/11/2009, -4/+64What I don't understand is why people can't seem to realize that the cost of the phone is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of the service. I'm not arguing that service costs are too expensive- I'm just saying it makes the phone's cost irrelevant as long as you plan on using it for two years+.
Buy as much phone as you want/need- if you can afford the service, it is insignificant by comparison- especially since you're going to be tied to this thing for a while (assuming you're starting a new contract). - BrendanSheehan, on 06/10/2009, -6/+64Wow, last year's model is $99. Shame we all want this years one though.
- CyberAlan, on 06/11/2009, -7/+61***** AT&T!
- hiphoprbinfro, on 06/10/2009, -14/+52Finally a 32gig model!!!
- MOJIRA, on 06/11/2009, -2/+38Aside from the issues with AT&T what were you expecting? I'm rather excited about the 3mp camera with touch focus, faster processor, and all the other features (most of which are software).
/notafanboyiswear - Drahkir, on 06/11/2009, -3/+27People talk about monthly cell phone rates (data and voice) like they're free on everything but the iPhone.
- xgambetx, on 06/11/2009, -50/+72iphone 3GS = HUGE disappointment.
- 2of8, on 06/11/2009, -3/+23Long-term planning is difficult.
- cordtripper, on 06/11/2009, -3/+21I don't get the complaining for the cost of data on the iPhone. yes its pricey but all cellular data is pricey, T-Mobile unlimited internet is 24.99 per month, Verizon unlimited Data is 44.99 per month, ATT 30 per month. apart from sprint and their 99 bucks everything pack which im sure they offer because there pretty much fending off bankrupcy there all the same. now if the point is that its expensive with all carriers then stick with your plain phone. I don't mind paying the access fee because I like browsing on the go, I need my email on the go, and I am willing to pay for it. if you don't then stick with your razr and stop complaining.
- Xsecrets, on 06/11/2009, -0/+17no not officially, though the jailbroken 3G phones have been doing it for a while now.
- d3dm, on 06/11/2009, -2/+16You're forgetting that a lot of people bought homes with hardly any money down and then found out they couldn't make the payments. What makes you think that sort of genius wouldn't carry over to a measly phone?
- Dotcommer, on 06/11/2009, -1/+14hi im 123bucklemyshoe and i dont like usuing punctuation and i also like to type a lot and not say anything at the same time because im ***** retarded and probably stopped school when i was 10 but sometimes i also like to slide a quick use of punctuation. because it adds to my character and i know that its really hard for people to take me serously because i type like a ***** internet tard but i feel waht i say has a lot of depth and meaning and value and if I can i will keep typing and typing and typing so that someone will notice what im trying to say always forgetting that if i type out a really long paragraph people will only read the first couple sentences maybe but since i dont like periods they will never know whne my sentence finishes and people will get tired of reading what I have to say and ***** BURY ME.
- sockpuppets, on 06/11/2009, -2/+15Gig-ity!
- Enterprise8875, on 06/11/2009, -0/+13What?
Its $30 a month for unlimited data. In fact you cant even get a data plan for iPhone thats not unlimited.
And subscribe to apps? What the hell are you talking about? Apps cost mostly 99 cents and the are optional, there are no subscriptions.
Wow you are ill informed. - sirmasterboy, on 06/11/2009, -4/+17Where do people keep getting this $100 a month? The iPhone 3G costs me $58.50 a month. ~$62 after taxes but those aren't up to ATT. So that's $1688 over 2 years for a device I use regularly every day. I think it's worth it but yeah it's not for everyone.
- purseonality, on 06/11/2009, -1/+13Punctuation is your friend.
- aeiou, on 06/11/2009, -0/+12close....

Ok, so its double, but still, not bad. - krwlngindark, on 06/11/2009, -0/+11two words a week.
- shaun3000, on 06/11/2009, -8/+19What a horrible article. I wasn't aware the iPhone (or any phone) contained a hard drive. And please tell me where I can buy an 8 GB MicroSD card for $8, I'd LOVE to have one!
- DelMonte, on 06/11/2009, -0/+10"Is it just me, or was the build quality of the 3G less than that of the first gen?"
No it's not just you, there's another guy who posted the exact same thing just above you. He also has the same username as you... - LJSeinfeld, on 06/11/2009, -7/+16Let's see...
Makes and receives phone calls.... √
Awesome web browser... √
Awesome display / touch screen ... √
Decent battery life (for a 'smart phone') √
Visual Voicemail .... √
Awesome music player ... √
Awesome video player ... √
Awesome photo viewer, with slideshows... √
Great build quality ... √
MMS, ok.. but MMS < Email
PTT -- get real.
Tethering -- it tethers fine... AT&T just doesn't like it.
Video Recording, background apps,... yeah... invest in 2 clicks and and jailbreak it.
Funny how one man's "Apple can't make a decen't phone" is another man's "For their first attempt at a mobile handset, they did pretty good -- and shot right to of their niche market".
Now, call a friend to help you carry your G1 around. ;) - billygreen23, on 06/11/2009, -1/+10You have to draw the line somewhere. In the TV analogy, if you're then going to buy the $1900 tv, why not buy the $2000 one? Then why not the $2100?
It's called being responsible with your money and living within your means. - jojomynojo, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8Nope.
- blackjack75, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8That's one case where adding a plural 's' to iPhone 3G generates more confusion than the grammatical satisfaction it grants you.
- Spawn2105, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8AT&T is really ***** you guys, sucks to hear...
Here in Austria with Orange i got my Iphone 3G for 1Euro and i'm paying 30Euro (think 35$) with 1k minutes, 1k text messages and 4GB data included. Not unlimited voice, but i've yet to reach 1000 minutes...
How can AT&T be asking for such high prices, thats just insane - Pic0, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8unlimited internet (same as email) GPS is free...
so you are paying $30 for unlimited data. what about minutes? to use the phone like a phone - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+9i didn't know Mac came out with a phone.. that is one entrepreneurial computer.
- kinseyincanada, on 06/11/2009, -1/+9i dont understand all this talk about the monthly cost of owning an iPhone, the monthly data plans are expensive, but they are expensive for every phone, why do people only bitch about the iPhones cost?
- Galaxylander, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8Rogers locks you into a 3 year contract, my bills are $100-150 a month. Over the course of my contract I will have spent $4680, I only get 500 minutes, *1 gig of data* and 2500 text messages. Those are pretty much it.
Don't complain, lol. - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7you need the compass so you know which way to turn when you have to pray five times a day
- lukewind, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7I think the $99 iPhone is a big deal for consumers, but the new 3GS is a big deal for a lot of people who wanted an iPhone with more storage and a nice speed bump. If you look at Apple's cycles of development you will see they bring a product to market and spend a few years making it better and better and then BANG!....they hit you with a brand new version that makes the old one look like crap.
I imagine that next year we will see Apple launch an new design for the iPhone with a bunch of new features. I would have liked a few more features in the new 3GS, but the iPhone does so much that I can't really complain, some Apple fans are a bit too rabid and expect Apple to amaze them every six months, these idiots need to realize that innovation and design take a lot of time. You cannot reinvent something like the iPhone in a year without a lot of risk in something going wrong. - markusfarkus, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7Yeah, I don't get why all these people are complaining as if a voice and data plan on the iPhone is so freakin expensive. My company pays more per month for my Blackberry than I pay for my iPhone.
- HentaiJeff, on 06/11/2009, -2/+8::points you to ebay::
- osteor10, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6There is a time and place for Hubert.
- mrkmrk, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6If you upgrade from a Blackberry, you can keep your plan from that. I pay $30 a month for unlimited internet, email, and GPS use. It's not a terrible deal.
- doom777, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6They have a different plan for BlackBerries also.
- sockpuppets, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6You guys are being trolled.
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/11/2009, -2/+8First you asked where the SIM goes in, then you ask why you are getting dugg down and say something completely different (that the size of the iPhone SIM is different). As a former iPhone user, I can confirm that the iPhone SIM is just the same as any other AT&T SIM. I put the iPhone SIM into a BlackJack, no problem.
So maybe the third time you explain it you'll do better. - Elranzer, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6The best upgrade Apple could do for the iPhone is getting it out of the AT&T exclusivity deal.
The iPhone is not worth switching to that abomination of a cell carrier, especially if you're already on Verizon. - cordtripper, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6Yes both the iphone plan and the Blackberry plan are both $30 bucks
- lexbaby, on 06/11/2009, -1/+7If people are owning a cell phone any way, the monthly cost is irrelevant. At least not a big factor. How much was the first iPhone? $500? $400? To the "general public," not Digg geeks, I think a $99 iPhone is bigger deal than what the 3GS brings.
- venomoushealer, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6@123bucklemyshoe
We're so happy to hear that you're modest and have a high IQ. But maybe you haven't actually left your parents basement for the past 20 years...but IQ tests don't mean *****. Literally. No one gives a damn about IQ.
Also. Quite a few people have heard of and use a Flip. Welcome to 2009.
And honestly, stop commenting. Please. You're worse than the people who infect digg from 4chan.
Just go back to masturbating in your parents basement. - ElAmo, on 06/11/2009, -2/+7yup, i really hate the people who don't realize this. so many ignant kids at school whined about the $200 price tag as if that were the primary cost of ownership.
- Roundbadge, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6Okay - what else do you need? What were you expecting?
Flash support? ***** THAT. - axiomflash, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5Do tell more please... How do you do that?
- soopertoll, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5AND THE RIAA!
AND GEORGE LUCAS!
AND POPEYE TOO!
oh and i wanna greet my mum here and all my friends in Canada and hi also to sue. - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+6the "game changer" (to use yet another horrible powerpoint pinheads phrase) is like your wallet get wahlloped by a 10 pound hammer instead of an 11 pound one.
