- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51"Unlike my phone. He picks it up and points out four little nubbins on the back. 'Your phone's got feet on,' he says, not unkindly. 'Why would anybody put feet on a phone?' Ive has the answer, of course: 'It raises the speaker on the back off the table. But the right solution is to put the speaker in the right place in the first place. That's why our speaker isn’t on the bottom, so you can have it on the table, and you don't need feet.'"
Every time I hear examples like this it reaffirms to me why I love Apple, and I think it will be details like this that make the iPhone a success. And yes, I just checked: my Q has feet on it, too. - yomamadudeyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45A really great read.
- late2digg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33"And yes, I just checked: my Q has feet on it, too."
My crappy ass Motorola has the speaker in the wrong place and doesn't even have feet. :-( - isnoop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Am I the only person who looked at that photo and thought "wow, that's a nice hand"?
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21A lot of bloggers could learn from this. Sadly, the ratio of bad bloggers to pros is very high. :(
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Might as well begin speculating what the next iPhone will look like while we're at it!
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19A quick google search made me ***** myself laughing at you, what makes you tink a 20 dollar flip phone could EVER compete with the iPhone. You can take your number-pad keyboard and be happy, I'll be happy with OSX, ACTUAL web-browsing not your WAP, touchscreen, sleek, widgets, video, 2 MP camera, Mail, and much more.
"My Walkman is like an iPod, but it's 200 dollars cheaper!!" XD - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+32Great now we have to hear about apple until june. And then after june it's OMG LOOK WHAT I DID WITH MY IPHONE. And slightly before june we get to see unboxing pics 40 times and then a video. FFS
- thetanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I love how they made Cingular their bitch without ever showing them the phone. Its an awesome thing when someone has vision, talent, AND clout to make a difference.
- calacak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Many, many people will drop the money for this phone. Apple will have zero problems selling everyone of them that they make. Just crusie Howard Forums and look at how many people have multiple $250+ phones.
I'm very interested in it, but want to wait for some reviews. How much OSX is in the phone? can we install our own apps? Bluetooth Stereo? Performance? Lots of questions to be answered by June.
As someone who has a Treo, which resets just about every day (and is on a OS that is 5 years out of date) I'm eagerly waiting this phone. I also cannot wait to see if it helps change the industry some. As the article pointed out, other phone makers might just start demanding less carrier rules and more freedom to make the phones the way they want -- and that is good for us. - goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Another comment from the article: “'I actually have a photographer’s loupe that I use to look to make sure every pixel is right', says Scott Forstall, Apple’s head of Platform Experience (whatever that is). 'We will argue over literally a single pixel.'"
This statement says alot about why Apple is currently in a class of its own. Apple aims at perfection in every detail, while other computer and electronics companies are happy to churn out half-assed products. - isnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10There appears to be a problem with the article. Page 2 contains 2 repeat paragraphs from page 1 and says it's 2 of 2. Going back to page 1, you can read page 3 of 3 which is most of page 2.
Oops. Someone paginated poorly. - Ryan001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I agree. One of the most honest and thorough looks at the iPhone yet.
- aecarol, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18"my Nokia 6133 has the speaker in the right place, so no feet, and it was about $600 less than the iPhone."
And since both phones have about equal features and ease of use, that's a clear win for the Nokia! ;-) - Timdegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Excellent article. It really will be interesting to see how the market reacts to the emergence of this new entrant.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm not sure what you're talking about, but abroad means overseas.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So true, voicemail is such a pain, how come no one else thought to do it that well?
And text messaging? Why is it treated like email, when normally it's more like IM? The iPhone fixes that. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Personally, I'm going to wait a year or two for the price to come own, and the features to come up.
I remember how fast iPods got replaced once Apple got going."
Not to mention the Phone market moves faster than that. I go through about a cellphone a year, regardless of my contract (I buy replacement phones at their full, non-contracted price, so I'm well aware of how much phones like the iPhone *really* cost). Just wait until they start mass production and Cingular gets their contracting, discounting claws into it. Look at the RAZR for historical reference, $500 with a contract, and $800 without, and even as revolutionary as it was in size, it's interface was still dismal. This is the first phone I would literally drop my laptop for, a phone I would spend a grand on. It's the 21st Century Newton. It's what Palm aimed for. And they just added a phone to it, and an iPod to it for kicks. - venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Can't wait until that touch screen technology reaches 30" monitors and iMacs. Now that's a revolution.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12"escorted to a conference room that contains Jobs, some associates, and some lumps concealed under some black towels."
But were they *wearing* the black towels around their loins? Haha, I got to say loins. - staceyeileen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@gemini:
I do hope you are correct.
Speaking of the work that has to go into iTunes, is it just me or does it deserve a name change? It currently manages a library of music and video, syncs them all to the ipod, as well as photos and calendars. Now it's going to sync contacts, email accounts, bookmarks, etc etc etc? Seems waay out of the initial scope of an application titled "iTunes". - filipeanut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just noticed my treo has rubber feet. Whoops, it fell, time to buy that iphone.
- krische, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope they add that before it is released in June.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4see, i agree with that too. But most all-in-one phones have been crappy and are button whorefests. How are you going to sell a Qwerty mobile phone to immigrants? Numbers, pointing, touching is, like the OS X binary, Universal.
The average joe isnt going to buy the $499 device. No one expects them to. Blackberries are $200 and you've got to buy the Exchange Server and support. iPhone is prolly worth it to most businesses.
But if the iPhone is running OS X, the audience for this device ain't just the Blackberry business users.
Perceivably, you could be running iLife '07 in there. Some people might think of it as a $499 tablet PC. Or say, an E-reader. The Sony 1st gen e-reader is a monochrome 6 inch display priced at $349.
Like Wozniak said, "it's cheaper than I'd thought it'd be." - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5... I understand humor, I infact laugh everytime someone posts that link (which is getting as old as the "will it blend!?" btw) but I don't sense humor in that post, nd by the number of Digg down's, neither do a lot of people...
- turrican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's sneak PEEK, not sneak PEAK.
Unless a mountain range suddenly appeared without warning while the reporter was writing the article; that, I suppose, would qualify as a sneak peak.
(edit: omaryak mentioned this a couple of hours ago - I didn't notice because this drives me SO nuts, I raced to the bottom of the page to vent before looking!) - Brooklynbound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Still a bit odd that they didn't go 3g, and that there is no iChat application. But overall a home run. Hoping that Cingular lowers their data plans a bit, way too expensive for slow speeds. Glad to see someone step it up a notch...
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The only thing that troubled me was not being able to sync over bluetooth. What's up with that?"
Feature's just not done yet. There's probably a fevorish amount of work going on to implement everything that they want to implement before product launch, for example taking advantage of the WiFi chipset to allow wireless loading of songs (if not purchasing) and bluetooth iTunes syncing (something that will require substantial architectural changes to iTunes, in the same way adding iPod support did). What we're seeing now is just the tip of the iceburg. Remember one of the biggest flaws of the original iPod? It didn't sync out-of-box with PCs, only Macs with Firewire. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Spelling note: sneak *peek*! The other kind is the one you find on a mountain.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Total amount raised so far: $1
- staceyeileen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Excellent read. The only thing that troubled me was not being able to sync over bluetooth. What's up with that?
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gawtmilk-
You have some weird arguments- can't run Funal Cut Pro? Tell me, why would you use a pro video editor on a 3.5 inch screen? The mini OS X is going to be pretty cool, imagine all the little 3rd party widgets that will come out.
Re the battery, of COURSE it won't last as long as an iPod, it has wifi, bluetooth, camera, phone, and pocket-pc features. And I'm pretty sure no clickwheel is a non-issue since you have Coverflow and a TOUCHSCREEN
I think it's pretty impressive. I agree that all-in-one devices are usually < their separate equivalents, but i think this one is the exception to the rule. Either way $600 is a lot less than getting a phone/ipod/laptop all together. Imagine the 3rd gen iPhone. That's when I'll get one.... - tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"and the iPhone certainly won't run OSX as well as a MacBook Pro."
Now there's a deal-breaker. Screw the iPhone, I'm getting a MacBook Pro instead!
Wha? - Sprules04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I too think iTunes needs a name change. It does sooo much moren than just play music that the 'Tunes' part just doesn't work anymore. I think they should update the name to iMedia or something to that extent. But then again iTunes is so ingrained it probably will never happen.

... - uberism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, I definitely noticed those beautiful hands as well.
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great article
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2really, IMO, price isnt a problem on this phone, list prices for blackberries and treos are $500, now, granted, they always give you multiple discounts and premiums when you get a plan, so lets say it costs $250.
for that $250 you get a smaller screen, less memory, and a truncation of lots of other features apple has.
heck, if you took that $250 and added the cost of adding 4GB of memory to it you would be close to the iphone.
the iphone has a lot of technology that i think merits the price, sure, its expensive, but if i had the money i would get it as soon as it came out, it is definitely worth it. just because it is not affordable for the masses doesn't mean that it is over priced, it is not meant to be just an everyday phone, its basically a mobile computer.
that being said, i won't be getting one as soon as they come out, i plan on waiting for a lower price and better features, but so what, you can do that with any piece of tech thats out there.
/my two cents - durrty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I have to say that the price point is a huge factor. Yeah the iPhone is cool and innovative but will cost the same amount as a PS3? I believe that consumers would see a lot more innovation from cell phone companies if people were willing to shell out $700 for a phone.
I work in the cellphone and mp3 department at Best Buy, which doesn't make me an expert on either, but does give me some insight into what customers want and are willing to buy. The VAST majority of people who come in (this is an upscale suburban market by the way), see $199 and the most they would spend on an mp3 player and shy away from the video iPod for that reason, they also say how they don't need their mp3 player to do video, they just want it to listen to music.
Also when people check out the "smart phones" which range from $219 (Blackjack) to around $349 (Treo) in our store, they don't even consider them an option because they don't need the extra features. The RAZR is still the most popular phone (dispite our best efforts to show their crappy-ness).
Point is I can almost guaranty that people will look at the iPhone and say "I already have an iPod, I just need a phone". Esp. at that price - muaddib420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think there's no ichat application because it would dig into cingular's revenue source of SMS. if you had free IP chatting, why use SMS? surely, someone will create a widget or something that can use ichat or AIM or whatever eventually...
- level, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I can't believe I actually read an article that long all the way through and with that much attention. Seriously, great read!
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple engineering for you eh?
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except Verizon and Sprint don't use GSM. Or, if you're talking about data, the iPhone isn't 3G.
- samuel514, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Long article but really worth it thanks!
- lare911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jobs has made a point that this is NOT a cell phone, that it is an ipod. I'd bet that we will see a continuing series of features added on a regular basis. There is no reason why we shouldn't soon see a differentiation in models, with new features and larger storage space. No doubt larger gigabyte hard drives will appear, maybe removable storage, a higher resolution camera, etc etc.
Could be this device is the early ancestor of the tricorder. . . - FlareSpot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any data and I mean any data that is transmitted to Cingular's network will have to be payed for. So any texting, browsing, even with the built in browser will be at premium. Hence probably why Cingular wanted this so bad.
- krische, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And if anyone can make a user interface simple enough for Grandma to use, I would have to say its Apple.
- ae92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has a web browser... there's always Meebo, I guess.
- ryanvs5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes i agree. when i watched the keynote last night i was blown away at how amazing the iphone is. it is in every sense of the word...revolutionary. from my very first Macintosh IIsi to my macbook pro, apple continues to deliver products that take my breath away, lol. im just sad that i will have to cancel my verizon service just to get the phone. Im not too fond of cingular and my motoQ is a pretty decent device, but it runs windows...and well...why have windows when you can have OSX on a phone :P
- 5678, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes the cell phone market has a fast turnaround but I don't see Apple having anything to worry about on that score for awhile. The iPhone's form factor, not unlike it's little brother the iPod, is very nearly perfect right out of the starting gate. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of hardware tweaking to be performed (unlike the endless redesigns of other phones) which leaves, as always and again like the iPod only the kind and amount of storage left to really be upgraded. So for me, the only downside I see is the relatively small amount of memory on the 1st Gen iPhone. After getting used to filling a 30GB iPod with music and movies and not worrying about deleating anything cause I have 1T hard drives around to endlessly fill, 8GB seems quite spartan. How quickly I have become spoiled and forgotten when 8MB HDs were considered spacious...
With this in mind I may try to restrain myself from immediately plunking down the bucks for one of these beauties. It will not be easy! Yet, with 32+GB flash drives coming on the scene I see way bigger HDs in the 2nd Gen iPhone by August or September - just in time for back to school and Christmas....but it's the waiting that's the hardest part. -
