- yttrstein, on 10/20/2009, -35/+579Umm.. it has one physical button, but as always, press down on the right side, right click, press down on the left, left click. There, two buttons.
This argument is more lame now than it was 20 years ago. - inactive, on 10/20/2009, -50/+391God, who cares about the one button anymore? You can do all the right clicking, gesturing, scrolling and whatever you want. Why are we still stuck on this like it's a problem? Apple isn't perfect, but come on. Focus on the real drawbacks and let 1999 stay in the past.
- Hellicus, on 10/20/2009, -119/+453I'll stick with my regular mouse, thanks.
- runeasgar, on 10/20/2009, -16/+310Are you sure it has one button? I was under the impression that it has none.
- latin69, on 10/20/2009, -78/+301I want one!
- KhalidS, on 10/20/2009, -24/+183WTF!! you CAN press the right click button on any apple mouse they manufactured. What is wrong with engadget?
- JasonCox, on 10/20/2009, -12/+116My initial reaction: "Magic Mouse"? Hrm, Steve must be naming products again...
- bouche, on 10/20/2009, -17/+117don't knock it till you try it. you can always just by a regular ol' 3 button mouse with a scroll wheel by another company.
- muzzy, on 10/20/2009, -5/+101I'm not a fan of Apple mice, I always replace them with a Logitech on my Macs, but the one button argument is so lame...
Their mice *do* right click, and have for years. And for years before that, there were loads of multi-button mice available for Macs. I don't think I've used a single button mouse since the mid 90s... - pattherat, on 10/20/2009, -12/+106Original poster and commenter need to know more before commenting on said product.
The new Magic Mouse has two button functionality via clicking the upper right corner of the mouse surface (customizable to the other side if you are left handed and want to change it)
Watch the video on this page for confirmation: http://www.apple.com/magicmouse/ - flyinfoofighter, on 10/20/2009, -6/+90The single physical button design is something Apple has never had to worry about being stolen.
- runeasgar, on 10/20/2009, -6/+87I do. All Apple laptops have that functionality. I "flick" through lots of things.. it's very useful.
- borez, on 10/20/2009, -24/+101Apple mice are rubbish, I went through three of their mighty mouse in half a year ( the track ball stopped working in different directions on all three ) before I gave in and bought a Logitec mouse, 2 years later and it's still working like the day I bought it... no problem.
- GoldenChaos, on 10/20/2009, -5/+71I believe, FredFredrickson, that there's a new mouse. You seem to be talking about the old mouse. Allow me to point you to the top of this page, which has a link to information about the new mouse, so you can stop sounding ignorant.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 10/20/2009, -22/+84I'll stick with my logitech thanks.
- poochg3, on 10/20/2009, -5/+61If this works as good as their glass trackpads it will be awsome! Everytime I go from my macbook pro to another computer I miss the hell out of my trackpad!
- peznex, on 10/20/2009, -23/+76But it does have right click.
- TreDubZedd, on 10/20/2009, -3/+53The click is a lie!
- btschul, on 10/20/2009, -12/+59Which functionality is removed, exactly?
- latin69, on 10/20/2009, -12/+58Less moving parts, it looks simple to use like the multi-touch trackpads on the Macbooks. I prefer using the two finger gestures than having to press buttons or use keyboard shortcuts.
- latin69, on 10/20/2009, -6/+50One button.....
- BossKey, on 10/20/2009, -6/+49Article title is inaccurate. This mouse has NO buttons.
Apple haters are inaccurate. This mouse has great functionality. And I'm not a fan of Apple mice.
The big mistake people are making is thinking # of buttons = functionality.
This mouse has no buttons, but you can right-click, forward/back, scroll up/down/left/right (simultaneously), and left-click. I mean come on, that's not a description of a "one-button" mouse.
I hated the Mighty Mouse, and I actually use a $5 generic USB scroll mouse with my Mac and I think it works great, but I've got an open mind about the new Magic Mouse. Even as I don't have an open mind about paying $69 for it. - blofeld9999, on 10/20/2009, -1/+44Are Maya users incapable of buying a 3rd party mouse? Considering you spent $6k on an application, an additional $30 on a decent mouse shouldn't be a problem. :)
- schlagsahne, on 10/20/2009, -0/+43One ring to rule them all....
- virtualball, on 10/20/2009, -2/+44exactly, I remember people saying that the buttonless MacBooks were a "terrible idea" and a "flop." Turns out it works better than most trackpads ive ever used.
sHockz: ...most, if not all mic are compatible with Mac OS X. As a troll, you get 2/10. - SoupGFX, on 10/20/2009, -3/+44Am I the only adult person in this world that finds small, low laying mice like this one, make my hands cramp up after hours of use? What happened to the days that they made mice big enough that would actually fit the hand comfortably? Apple keeps making these "cool" looking mice that you can't use more than a hour or so before you want to throw the thing against the wall.
- sirselfdestruct, on 10/20/2009, -11/+52you two ought to read more than the headline. one physical button, two-button functionality. either of you ever used the mighty mouse?
- FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2009, -9/+49The Mighty / Magic Mouse are a case of form over function, unfortunately.
I'm a designer and I work on a Mac Pro at work. I like the Mighty Mouse for the 360 degree scroll ball, but I also like to work with my mouse's sensitivity turned down a bit for higher precision - which means I have to occasionally pick up the mouse, mid-click, and move it while I'm dragging something around the screen. The Mighty Mouse, and I suspect, the Magic Mouse as well, are terrible for this, because the button is part of the body. If you try to pick it up while you're dragging it, the button disengages.
I've swapped out my mouse for the closest thing to my liking as I could find in the office - a basic Dell scroll wheel mouse. No more 360 degree scrolling for me, but I can live with that if it means a mouse with more weight and with keys independent of the body. - swimtwobirds, on 10/20/2009, -10/+48mono, what the ***** are you talking about?
- scottdennis, on 10/20/2009, -3/+41i guess knowing the real facts is not an option for you
- notzak, on 10/20/2009, -1/+38MX Revolution is basically the messiah of mice. 3 years running
- mulling, on 10/20/2009, -4/+40It's like some cosmic irony that Apple is doomed to make great hardware, but can't make a usable mouse to save their lives. I've used every Apple mouse since the puck, and none of them were as usable as a generic $5 PC mouse. I'd pity Apple if they weren't making so much goddamned money.
- victorycig, on 10/20/2009, -4/+39I'm not... I can't stand that the Mighty Mouse's wheel gets stuck.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/20/2009, -1/+36the buttons are in your mind
- jakem1, on 10/20/2009, -4/+37FEWER moving parts.
- MacParrot, on 10/20/2009, -0/+32Since both CBS and Apple lost the right to use the name Mighty Mouse, what did you expect them to do?
- PhoenixReborn, on 10/20/2009, -0/+31That's what she said.
- L0NER, on 10/20/2009, -10/+39Maya users scream at the top of their lungs.
- phogasmic, on 10/20/2009, -3/+32"And who flicks through tabs and documents"
Everyone will when this catches on. - pattherat, on 10/20/2009, -10/+38It is better...think no dirt or other crap to clean out or to adversely affect the function of a mechanically moving part. (anybody love cleaning out stuck scroll wheels etc?)...
- SPECOPS, on 10/20/2009, -0/+28@newchap He was refuting the (incorrect) statement that most 3rd party mice do not work (when in fact most of them work out of box).
- t0ny, on 10/20/2009, -4/+29Yes. The old Might Mouse can right click too.
- digggggggggg, on 10/20/2009, -2/+27What ball? Did you just copy and paste your critique of the "mighty mouse"?
- millixaw, on 10/20/2009, -0/+24The wired Mighty Mouse is now called the "Apple Mouse." Seems a little odd and too simple for an Apple product name.
Since Steve owns so much of Disney, he should have one-upped Mighty Mouse's IP holders and named it the Mickey Mouse. - DMDekoth, on 10/20/2009, -0/+21Put a lower-case i in front of it?
- JTMON, on 10/20/2009, -2/+23Well, not ANY apple mouse, just since the last iteration.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2009, -3/+24Oh man, I remember the puck. That thing was so, so bad.
- victorycig, on 10/20/2009, -0/+21But what's computing if you don't have a peanut butter jelly sandwich in your hands (and subsequently in your mouse)?
On a more serious note, yeah, I've been careful with my mouse and have cleaned it several times with rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Actually the alcohol is what finally did it in; the middle-click sensor must have permanently shorted. I opened it up and checked all the components but wasn't able to fix it.
http://www.veoh.com/videos/v378809PrA5a3pg - victorycig, on 10/20/2009, -0/+19Steve's finally done it.
- MacParrot, on 10/20/2009, -3/+22I've used a "Mighty Mouse". I have quite a collection of them gathering dust in a drawer. While I prefer OS X and Macs in general, I've yet to use an Apple mouse that I haven't disliked. Maybe this one will finally break the curse but I'm not holding my breath.
