- stephensoto, on 10/12/2007, -20/+54I feel like i'm the only one who likes Windows sometimes...
- ginty, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38I find it funny that one of the main reasons some list to use a PC is for the games, yet they always claim that they are the ones getting the work done and the people on macs are playing around, accessorizing etc.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Indeed, as usual on Digg the title is grossly misrepresenting the story its linking to.
- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35Maked as inaccurate:
Article: "The report cites a survey across 1,200 students at 100 colleges, which confirmed Apple is the number TWO favourite computer brand for US students" (caps mine) - thor2077, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27since when does "high-than-industry-average market share" = most popular?
13% != majority - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Its only "higher-than-industry-average" because apple is the only one selling macs where as if you want a windows PC you have to slice up a pie so many different ways. If you compared PC Laptops overall to Mac Notebooks the "Most Popular" choice wouldn't be the mac notebooks. Its like saying in an orchard where there are 12 apple trees and one orange tree people eat a higher percentage of oranges from that tree every day than they eat apples from any one tree every day when they might eat 12 oranges and 100 apples on a daily basis.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24It may be because they give you a free nano with a computer.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Indeed, and nowhere in the story does it say that Macs are "most popular". Only the incorrect digg title infers this.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Wait, didn't that number used to be 3% or 5%? When did it get to 13%?"
When they listed the percentage of a single demographic rather than the entire public. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"A recent report confirmed that at Princeton University in the US, 45 per cent of new computers sold to students this year were Macs, up from 38 per cent last year."
Which also means 55% were not macs. Much of that 55% are running windows, some is running Linux, some of the Macs are running Linux as well.
What does this all mean? Nothing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I bought a macbook for college. I can't say OS X is a superior OS across the board compared to Windows, but I can say that the productivity features built into OS X (spotlight, expose, smart folders, widgets, ical, etc.) as well as all the neat freeware/shareware apps make it a really useful machine. Yeah, you can find a PC equivalent for everything described above, but I personally don't think the end result is nearly as well put together as what you can get in the macbook. Just my opinion. FWIW, I have built every pc I've owned up until a few months ago when I got my macbook.
- chaimpot0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I would have to totally disagree with this study. Windows is the most popular choice here at UF
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20From a freelance IT standpoint I love windows. It provides such good job security.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't forget Natural Light! "$6.99 a case? Maybe we should stock up for the winter..."
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I would _really_ like some of you guys to help me out on something. I'm starting college for Photography/Graphic Design and I need a laptop (it's required) they recommend Mac's, but Mac's arent required. They also offer nice discounts for Mac's only. I need to make a decision within the next month and I'm still completely lots when it comes to Mac's. If anyone has suggestions/comparisons on what is better I'd appreciate it. I know plenty about Window's and PC's, but mac's have never been my thing. Everyone I've talked to says Mac's are better for the line of work I'm going into though. If you can't post something here, please don't hesitate to email me. I'd appreciate any feedback you guys can offer. allieweber@gmail.com
- Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10You know, I can't remember the last time I saw an Apple story on the front page without one of either flag or naio's pointless comments nagging about "f'ing apple fanboiz!!1". Have you /still/ not found the "Manage Topics" link? You'd save all of us a lot of 'bury comment' clicks.
And I'm a PC user by the way. People like you give us all a bad name. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Windows and Mac aficionados make me giggle. You all get so defensive. You can't spell, blah blah blah. Post your comment and be quiet.
@jonforthewin
The Windows from an IT point of view comment made me laugh. I know very few IT guys that work with Macs. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wouldn't you consider using an OS that only 5% use not jumping on the bandwagon?
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5sooooooo...between Windows and Apple laptops Apple ranked 2nd. Wow great info...thanks for wasting my time.
- TheKlaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@mancat
The "that" is completely optional. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20Yet another Digg Mac fanboy article where the title is ***INSANELY*** mis-quoted from the actual article to make Macs look better.
Anyway.....everyone expects that for Mac articles. I just graduate from PSU (Main)....and all of the Mac labs on campus were almost always empty. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Dont forget that Apple is now the number 4 PC manufacture, First is HP, then Dell then Gateway and then Apple.
Apple will soon overtake Gateway..
And remember HP and Dell are the Walmart of computers.... - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm a super mac fan, I've had ibooks and powerbooks since they existed. And just graduated from University last year. I was actually at a coffee shop on Sunday in Ann Arbor and I counted people with computers, there were 10 using non mac, 4 using macs. Granted this isn't a huge data set, but I think it shows there are more Win PC's out there...
- pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5as long as you learn what you're doing with the software, it won't make a difference whether you're working on a Mac or PC... 'Macs for creative types' is a myth that Apple and its hordes like to perpetuate, but it's not true anymore in terms of software OR hardware and it hasn't been for a while. Good luck.
- 2shae, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't hate Windows but I think mac (especially the iMac) is just better looking that a windows pc. And I think that if Apple would make commercials here in The Netherlands than a lot of people will buy apple's.
We just got a Apple store in The Hague and they are now selling apple's in Media Markt and they are attracting a big crowd. A lot of people are playing with the machines and saying how nice they look.
BTW: I'm getting my first apple ever....the 24" iMac !!!! - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It ain't a fratty without Natty.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You get a discount for being a student, regardless of whether your school has a procurement gateway set up with Apple or not. I do know that at Ohio State, you can get a whopping 37% discount on select Lenovo's.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5But the girls on campus running *BSD and GNU+Linux are the awesomest.
- mathmanjeffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@theorb,
Trend analysis should only be done by trained professionals. In this case, not you.
In other news, when wanting to proclaim something "most popular" and dealing with usage statistics, most popular = most used.
Carry on. - Brutusfly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Geoken, how is one notebook cheaper than another at the same price-point? ; )
Seriously, If you find a Windows laptop with integrated video camera, Bluetooth, Vista level OS, slim chassis, EFI bios, Exposé like window selection, integrated PDF support, a great media suite, system-wide spellchecker, dictionary and address book, dual core processor, a remote control, digital audio output, more secure file system that auto defrags,....Well you get the idea...If you find a PC cheaper, comparable and more reliable, I'll take one too! If you don't want all of that, enjoy your PC. : ) - gabrielep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2forcing customers to mix technologies is definetely unprofessional. Rosetta is just a workaround, like the old legacy Mac 9 application support, something like the ancient WOW (Windows On Windows), except that happened ages ago.
if you are a single Mac user probably won't see any problem, but consider a large company that is forced to mix and MANTAIN say PPC anc Intel equipments (or previously Mac OS and Mac OSX) and soon add 64 bit workstations. Let me tell you, that's a real nightmare.
Honestly, mixing Windows NT and 2000, or XP and Vista is a totally different thing.
For me, the only reason for big changes like those that happend for mac users is big money for Apple. - SQFreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I work as a student support technician at a small college. I'd agree with these results. (Be careful about what it actually says: it does NOT say that there are more Macs than Windows-based PCs on college campuses.) But people tend to think from the advertising that Macs are perfect and get all upset when not everything can be done in a matter of seconds.
During orientation, I got to the point where I'd ask someone, "Have you ever used a Mac before?" About 80% of the time, the answer was no, or not since elementary school. I'd give them a 30-page packet that detailed pretty much every keystroke needed to install Microsoft Office and to get the computer set up for the school network. I'd give them the packet and tell them to follow the instructions, then come back 10 minutes later to check on them. Over half of them got stuck at the first step - "Open your hard drive in the Finder." - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9They dont care. If they have to lie to make it seem like people use their favorite brand of computers, they will do it.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Honestly, I dont really care what people use. If you want to use Apple products, good for you, same with Linux or Windows." - flag564
What a complete and utter load of horsecrap, flag. You have nothing but derision in your comments for any Apple product or Apple users in general, period. You cannot stand that there are people out there that don't fall lockstep with your point of view (as your commentary on political diggs bears plenty of evidence). You're a miserable spoiler who gets his jollies trying to incite argument everywhere you go. Your epic negative digg count on story after story reveals you as the pathetic, attention-starved troll that you are. You and your ilk are the hemorrhoid on the backside of Digg.
I hate Windows (based on personal experience, mind you, a concept foreign to you) but I don't camp all the Windows-related Diggs to berate people who use Windows. Live and let live. The only genuine fanboy (since you're so fond of the word) around here is you, as shown by your intolerance for others' opinions.
P.S. I see you have a new apprentice in naio21 - takamalak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Get the Mac. You'll regret not getting it when all the really good designers in your class with Macs are making the kids who choose Windows look like design amateurs.
- ModernGeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"I just graduate" Which school is this again?
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been out of university long enough to not remember anything other than the apple offers ... hence why I phrased it in that way.
- dogshaft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You don't recall Dell?
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am suprised at how often that is the case.
- danceparty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why does macworld.co.uk look so much cooler than macworld.com (US version). i like macs and PCs for different reasons.
my perfect computer will never exist, that is a PC that I build that runs OS X (legally). - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"Anyway, you need to relax a little and let people be fans of what ever they want. Same thing goes for the cukoo lala apple fans."
Honestly, I dont really care what people use. If you want to use Apple products, good for you, same with Linux or Windows.
But out of those three OSs, it has been the people from the Apple corner who just cannot help themselves but to go out and trash and bash all non Apple products.
Just do a search for Zune stories and you will see them at their finest.
If they would stop being such vain, arrogant, brats, few people would have any problems here. - gregrich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@angelof
"The Windows from an IT point of view comment made me laugh. I know very few IT guys that work with Macs."
Well here is one IT Pro who works on a MAC, actually on a nice new C2D MacBook Pro - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ModernGeek
Playing off of a minor typo. Hilarious. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would hurt current sales, but remember what powerbooks looked like a few years ago...black boxy things like lenovo. They sell more by looking nice, and the hardware cost is pretty much the same as any other manufacturer. Add to that it comes with OSX, the iLife suite, possibly a free iPod, you can install windows and run games, etc...it makes sense.
- angelof, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"If they would stop being such vain, arrogant, brats, few people would have any problems here."
It's that attitude that gets you dugg down.
There's a huge interest on Apple stuff but yes, some apple fans do become quite overzealous. However, this attitude exists among most groups of nerds being overprotective of the stuff they worship. I'm sure there are groups of crazy windows fans out there.
Maybe you should just avert your eyes from the apple stories and all their comments. - DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I can't speak for everyone, but I digg you down for using the retarded term 'fanboy'.
- ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why the ***** did that comment get buried?
- Brutusfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry Geoken, I must have mis-read your post about "faster".
The rest of your comment: "Unless your budget is unlimited, you will be able to get a faster PC laptop at every pricepoint. In the end, it's the only difference since the apps you'll be using are cross platform." ...I think is inaccurate. Dustbunny may want to consider some of the very REAL differences you are not aware of. And, Final Cut, iDVD, Motion, Garageband, and many other nice apps aren't cross platform. And why would having an unlimited budget help him buy a $950 Mac?
I certainly feel that OS X is worth more than XP Pro, and there are no third party apps that all integrate and intertwine across XP the way Apple's do in OS X. It's those little details that mean a lot over the years of ownership. I also find it hard to compare notebooks when they never quite have the same exact feature set. Like the MacBook for instance. It's inexpensive with all the features I mentioned above and many others (like the HD video editor included in iLife). If you spend all your time in Photoshop, the OS isn't so critical. I just tend to come at it from the perspective of someone who uses computers 11 hours a day in every way imaginable (including desktop support). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry, but if you have probs with viruses/spyware/ets on windows than you're a *****!
Hell, you probably even installed Norton Internet Insecurity you poor sap! -
