- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+86This is the frustrating part of watching tech companies (Apple in particular).
Last week there were reports of how Leopard is far from done; several major bugs still in the latest release; needs more time.
Now this clown comes out and says "It will be released sooner than expected."
As the philosopher Charlie Brown once said, "Good grief!" - dgcrazykid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44I just want a release date so I can know how long I have to wait to by a MBP
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38"No *****, but explain to me why my perfectly working Gateway with a 20.1" widescreen monitor, which was $589 beats the ***** out of an iMac with the same specs at $1,199."
Perhaps because most people who own iMacs don't get their willies off calling strangers "*****" behind cover of an anonymous screen name on an online forum. Go outside, take a breath of fresh air, discover that warm round disk called the Sun, and gain some perspective. They're computers, buddy, not worth having an aneurysm over. - mjhamilton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I can't wait! I'm going to freeze myself...
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Let's hope this one goes to 11.

Honestly, the "overpriced" thing is getting old. Have you seriously priced a Mac lately? They're not dirt cheap, but they're also not low end commodity boxes. Compare Apples to apples (so to speak), and they're very competitive.
Perhaps you'd like to make a crack about two-button mice now? - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30As selfish as it may seem, I'm very happy that OSX is locked to the hardware. I was raised on Windows 9x I've seen what happens when you support everything under the sun, I've seen what happens when PC's are so mass produced. I setup two Alienwares a few days ago, expecting it to be the closest to a Mac out of the box, and I was unplesantly surprised. There were missing drivers starting with the USB keyboard, which is essential to the install process, ranging to the IDE drivers and Disk Drives all of these installed after the OS was installed but if I hadn't had an older keyboard we would have been left with two very powerful, very expensive paperweights.
People will say it is bull but I've had a much better time with Apple and OSX and it is probably largely in part to the exclusivity. Honestly, I think if you had a couple of Macs your customers could rent from you, you'd find they'd respond a lot better to the idea of buying the hardware. - MJ420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Hmm, his main argument (Tortura's) for an March 27 leopard release is that it coincides w. the CS3 ditto...
The CS3 release is of course very important for Apple but I still think it's a bit vague argument - especially since the actual software wont ship on that date.
March 27 is a "bells-and-whistles global launch event in New York City" as Macworld puts it and I'm not sure if Apple wants to interfere w. that. (though the synergy effect could be huge)
Just my 2 cents, hope to be proven wrong...

You're right about stage one though, I honestly thought "this guy can't be that big of a jackass." - mattjumbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Apple is on top of the technology world. Denying it just makes you look stupid at this point.
"'Virtually every computer and handset manufacturer on the planet is struggling to figure out how to compete with Apple."
-Intel CEO, Paul Otellini - Fragility, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20All I know is that Leopard should be good times.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Um, 10.4.9 on March 27th maybe, but Leopard? Please, be realistic. Leopard at WWDC!!
- MDrake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Rumor has it Leopard is a kinky kitty.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Are you saying you installed a new copy of windows and it did not recognize a usb keyboard? I doubt that. Also, it is completely understandable that you need to install drivers for a RAID array. Anything else would work fine."
Shocked the hell out of me too. To be fair that is the only time that problem has come up (but there have been plenty of others) we're guessing that it was just a bad image (the OS was preinstalled). It recognized the USB mouse but not the USB keyboard.
Shoate: Grow up, if it wasn't so sad you'd be worth a laugh or two. My Mac has more than paid for itself in under a year just in time saved. That is why I choose to pay their price. I also use Windows and Ubuntu (server and desktop). I choose Macs because they provide the most benefits to me. - fuzzybunny1701, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yes, but IBM used to own the market and they got thrashed by Microsoft because they had a better, cheaper product. Now its Microsoft's turn to get thrashed. Just because they are big doesn't mean they can't fail, it just takes longer.
Just try and use their shoddy, sloppy, half finished products they have been pushing out the door these days.
Windows Live? What a total joke. - rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Microsoft owns 90% of the market. Apple's 5% is pocket lint."
Snapshot, meet trend. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14terrific way to earn a block (CLICK!)
- geardosdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm putting off buying a mac until leopard comes out, and I am pretty sure there are plenty of others doing the same thing. Hopefully it will be released soon so it can go head to head against vista.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Make that Mac Pro, and change "by" to "buy", and I'm in the same boat.
- Litespeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9OS X comes out of the box with lot of drivers (kernel extensions) for a broad range of PC hardware. It also strikes me as odd that Apple has not shut down the huge OSX86 effort (to tweak/hack OS X to run on plain X86 boxes).
One could infer from these two facts that Apple is testing the waters on generic hardware should the need arise to release it. After all, a lot of people said that Apple would never release on Intel CPUs and look what happened - they had an Intel version all along "just in case" the PPC platform hit a dead-end.
Apple are a smart company and I'm sure they have the bases covered. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8" Leopard is full of bugs currently, if Apple release it now it will be a distaster. It'll be released in June at the earliest and that will probably be too soon."
Why do all these people who really don't know anything insist sprouting their own speculation as fact? That's how these blogs get traffic. Of all the Apple rumors that get thrown around on a daily basis, a very smalll ammount are based off anything but guesses. - jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@mattjumbo: Microsoft owns 90% of the market. Apple's 5% is pocket lint.
Two things: MS is not 18 times larger than Apple, MS is more like 4 times larger than Apple. Larger in this case means gross sales. And, FWIW, Apple was larger than MS until 1998, but lost ground until 2002, but has been gaining it back the last few years.
Secondly, MS doesn't make the whole widget, only the OS and apps. Apple is a hardware manufacturer, and competes more with Dell, Acer, HO etc, than MS. Windows just happens to be the OS the other computer manufacturers are locked into, possibly because they have no in-house ability to produce an OS. - metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Are you saying you installed a new copy of windows and it did not recognize a usb keyboard? I doubt that. Also, it is completely understandable that you need to install drivers for a RAID array. Anything else would work fine.
- manikd1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Better late than never. I've noticed that 10.4 has been really solid since 10.4.8 and they still havn't released 10.4.9 so I'd rather use Tiger and give those programmers time to work out any bugs in Leopard.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12This "Leopard by the end of March" story has been regurgitated around the web and news organizations for the last 2 weeks. If speculation is repeated enough it must be right, right? Wrong. Leopard is full of bugs currently, if Apple release it now it will be a distaster. It'll be released in June at the earliest and that will probably be too soon.
- fuzzybunny1701, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Vista is dead in the water. Here are some of the show stopper problems some people are having with it:
http://aspnetresources.com/blog/vista_sucks.aspx
Apple needs to fully exploit this opportunity and spread the word about its far superior OS.
Releasing Leopard early (and it being solid) will just rub Microsoft's nose in its inability to ship software on time.
Even if Leopard doesn't have any killer features, Tiger is still way ahead of Vista.
Microsoft is dead if Vista is the best they can do in five years, I think all their talent cashed out in 2000 leaving the retards.
Expect more high profile announcements from large organizations banning Microsoft "upgrades". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I guess That will be 10.5 then? I was wondering:
what will they use to name releases when they run out of big cats?
what will OSX be called when they get past 10.99? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm going to miss Tiger *sniff*. It's been a great two years.
- philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That will be the name of the 11th revision of Ubuntu

- MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why does every one of your questions end with a period. Don't you know how to make a question mark.
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh, come on! Everyone knows Leopard is coming out next Tuesday! ;-)
- fuzzybunny1701, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The comments farther down the page provide the real meat, and there are four comments posted today, so I would say that is relevant.
Word is spreading that Vista is a bloated chrome plated turd. Only the clueless or the masochists will buy it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5drlha - So why is your speculation any more accurate?
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5totorototoro, that was probably the most appropriate and funny use of that phrase I have ever seen.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7oops
- applebyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Take what these analysts say with a grain of salt. They're not as knowledgeable as you may think.
http://www.applerumortracker.com/prudential.html - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's the hurry? Take the time to get it right.
- neatreceipts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've read this many times now - a March 27th release. However I don't know if I believe it. They haven't released any new features that Steve talked about (the super, special, secret ones) and I feel like we would see a demonstration before the launch.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"what will OSX be called when they get past 10.99?"
Perfect?
Seriously, however -- they've got about 10 years to figure that out. I think they'll come up with something. - sdbdogwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+210.4.9 = 23, Jim Carry was right. Every thing has to do with the number 23.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Leopard is not coming early. I'll be surprised if it's on time. The biggest features of Leopard have not even been discussed yet and therefore have not had outside testing. I'd be surprised if we see it before the iPhone.
- 1iProd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't you mean better late than sooner? :P
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2CS3 is to be announced on March 27th, not released. Sometime in April for the release apparently.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OS XI
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they aren't rushing things just to compete with Windows.
